2009 Japan Summer Camp
Hokkaido, Japan
Destined to be the greatest hockey player of all time, of course Satoru Gojo spent his summers training all around the world at expensive camps. Despite his family’s ability to pay for these camps, from the start Gojo was a prodigy who’s abilities granted him scholarships. Those scholarships eventually led to sponsorships, scouting, before he knew it Satoru was training for a shot at the 2012 Olympics.
With a bright future lighting his way the arrogant blonde didn’t really know why he was expected to work at the summer camp. Sure, he understood that it was ‘giving back to the community’ or whatever, but he really didn’t have any interest in being around kids. He wouldn’t make a good teacher, that much was for sure. Gojo wasn’t patient enough to teach them how to do something that was easier for him than breathing but his parents said he had to spend the summer doing something ‘productive’. So he packed up and went to Hokkaido.
Summer in Hokkaido held a different tone; gorgeously green with incredible nature all around, Satoru almost forgot that he was losing valuable training time. It suddenly occurred to him that he loved camp and was excited to get to relive some of his lost childhood out in the middle of nowhere. Well not nowhere, Hokkaido had a little town center that they went to on the weekends to give the kids a break. The summer was especially hot and locals knew to expect them to crowd around the ice cream stands.
Before Gojo knew it, the summer was drawing to a close. After putting in hours of work trying to be a better teacher, Satoru finally felt like he was getting through to the kids. The big final match ended up a success even though his kids didn’t win. For the first time, Gojo came in second place and everything that was at his finger tips crumbled away. His ego was bruised, his confidence was shot, but the kids had a lot of fun and that was what really mattered to him. It almost felt good to lose, bored by his constant success.
And he liked Geto just fine. Only having met two weeks ago the two were fast friends. Sure, they were trying to coach kids to go against one another, but that didn’t mean that Gojo didn’t want his company. Suguru was everything that Satoru wanted to be perceived as so of course there was little they could agree on. But could he think about what nights were going to be like after they went back to their respective homes and lost the late night chatter? No, the horrors of being alone again were too great.
“You excited to go home?” Gojo interrupts the silence, flipping the grilled meat skewers with ease. He’s trying to get out of his head and enjoy their end-of-the-summer party even though they’re stuck grilling meat, slaving away over a hot grill while the kids got to enjoy the fruits of their labors. Maybe he’s just a little hangry, maybe he’s still bitter about the loss.
Either way, he’s looking for way to perk up their conversation to make things feel less awful. Geto seems to know how to make the best out of the worst times and knows that the other will have something encouraging to say.
