I lost my best friend 3 years ago- not lost as in dead but lost as in we only text each other on our birthdays now. Movies and books don't tell you that a friendship dying is like the sinking of a ship, you try to get higher and higher and hold onto the rails and unanswered texts, the captain tries to steer it to safety and salvage pieces of two broken hearts until you're left with memories of what once was. We were friends for a decade and knew each other's diaries by heart, I still remember her phone number and the way she took her coffee. Seeing her in streets is like breathing in a scent you forgot you knew but it immediately takes you back to a summer in '07.
Movies and books also don't tell you that friendships don't just end after one fight or incident, it's like the rusting of a bridge, the slow decay of flesh and bones and secrets. It took weeks, months- until one day I woke up and I realized I hadn't thought of her in a while. And I wrote a poem that day and I titled it 'The dying of a best friend' and I put all my love for her in a tiny box with my half of the matching pendant of a dolphin we had and stored them in a corner of my heart under the heading Grief. Where else can one hide unspent love?
It's been 3 years since I lost my best friend, lost as in I still carry our secrets in a tiny box but we only text each other on our birthdays.

"Something inside me had dropped away, and nothing came in to fill the cavern."
- Haruki Murakami,
I love it when someone says things like âWould've been more fun if you were here" or "I wish you were here so we could do this and this". It shows that you kinda matter to them to certain degrees, that your existence matters. They mean that your mere presence could have a difference. And what's so subtle yet beautiful than this ?

what do you mean the yearâs ending? i havenât fixed my life yet
people should fall in love more. fall in love with poetry. fall in love with books. fall in love with the way your coffee swirls as soon as you pour the milk in. fall in love with the look your dog gives you when you wake up. fall in love with the rare moment when your cat doesnât ignore you. fall in love with the person who tells you to have a good day. fall in love with the waiter who gives you extra chicken nuggets. fall in love with sweaters in winter and cold lemonade in summer. fall in love with the moment your head hits the pillow. fall in love with talking to someone until 4am. fall in love with the days you can hit the snooze button over and over again. fall in love when a lover stares at you for five hours. fall in love with the stars when they look at you. fall in love with the sound of someone breathing. fall in love with the bus if itâs on time or the train if it comes early. fall in love with the song you can't get out of your head. fall in love with everything possible. <3
girlie you canât give up now you donât have the dark green couch of your dreams yet
thatâs enough emotions for a whole year. ciao
The earlier in the year you reblog this the better it gets
happy january 1st! i had a good run but iâm all out now. see yâall in 2023 x
fun fact about languages: a linguist who was studying aboriginal languages of Australia finally managed to track down a native speaker of the Mbabaram language in the 60s for his research. they talked a bit and he started by asking for the Mbabaram word for basic nouns. They went back and forth before he asked for the word for âdogâ The man replied âdogâ They had a bit of a âwhoâs on firstâ moment before realizing that, by complete coincidence, Mbabaram and English both have the exact same word for dog.
on a similar note, a traditional Ojibwe greeting is âNanaboozhooâ so when the French first landed in southern Canada they thought that they were saying âBonjour!â Which is fucking wild to think about. Imagine crossing the ocean and the first people you meet in months somehow speak French.Â
One of my university linguistic textbooks had a list of identical or near identical words in Ancient Greek and Hawaiian. They were all coincidences of course, but it was wild.
The whole point of the list was showing how thereâs a finite number of sounds human can produce, and itâs possible that multiple languages will end up assembling similar sounding words meaning roughly the same thing, and that therefore assuming that similar sounding words MUST be related is hubrys.
My favourite one of these is swedish and japanese Koja and Koya (ĺ°ĺą). Both are pronounced basically the same (ko-ya), and both mean âhut/small hosueâ, but they are not related to eachother in the slightest. Japanese koya comes from Ko- (prefix meaning âSmallâ) and Ya meaning âdwellingâ. Swedish Koja on the other hand comes from Koj (a sleeping place on a ship), in turn from latin Cavea (enclosure/cage/cavity), probably via Dutch Kooi.
