Back To School: Buying Textbooks
I realized today, I have over 900 followers and considering the time of the year, I thought maybe there are many college students (maybe first timers) following me. The topic is going to be textbooks.
Yes. Textbooks can be expensive, one time I had to buy a genetics textbook for almost $200 because it was the newest edition and had a fancy online access code. This book was a special case, but I am going to tell you some tips on saving money on books.
1) Check if there is free pdf of the book. Sometimes if you’re lucky, you can find them on google by searching the name and pdf and BAM! Free PDF
2) Save going to your university’s bookstore as a last resort option. Typically it is more expensive. But there maybe a time when a professor wants you to get a specific book that is only available through you university system.
3) Sign up for Amazon Student Prime. Put that student email to good use. The free trial last for 6 months! The 2 day shipping will come in handy for the following suggestions…
4) Wait til you actually get to class and your professor goes through the syllabus. They’ll mention how important or not important it is to have the book they want you to get. One time I bought a textbook before the semester started because it was listed as required, turns out I didn’t need it… As soon as you find out what books you get go on amazon and use the free 2 day shipping! During this time, you should also ask if you can get a later edition of the book. (Later editions = Cheaper)
5) RENT YOUR BOOKS IF YOU CAN!!!! you can save up to 80% with Amazon (link) The process is super easy.
6) Try to get used books. They’re cheaper and same content! Save up to 90% with Amazon (link)
7) If you know anyone who took the class before you ask if they still got the book!
8) Many professors would sometimes leave the textbooks on reserve at the university’s library. If you prof did that, then you can head over there use the books and copy the pages you need!
