What they don't teach you in undergrad
The number one rule I wish they taught me in school was the reality of not becoming successful overnight. I think thatâs what previous generations keep implying to totally fuck us over. âIf youâre a hard worker, youâll make it!â The reality is sometimes life has other plans. I strongly believe that everyone has a purpose and everyone contributes to the world in their own beautiful way. But sometimes you want to be a rocket scientist and find out you totally suck at physics. Sometimes youâre planning on getting your PhD and end up postponing it for years because you started a family. The first time I applied to medical school two years ago I didnât make it. I thought I was the biggest failure out there. Thatâs until I realized that out of 4,000 applicants I was in the top 20% of people who actually got an interview. And because only 100ish people make it in each class, there were about 3,900 other people who felt the same way I did. No one tells you this shit in undergrad. Instead, you wake up on a daily basis looking at facebook and judging yourself based off of everyone elseâs success. No one puts their problems online. No one puts âtoday I went to a coffee shop and reevaluated my life before binging on cookies and Netflix while on the verge of tears.â No. In the words of Dr. House: âeveryone lies.â People arenât going to post their greatest insecurities or fights with their spouse online for the world to see. Chances are, the person youâre jealous of for making it to (whatever place in life) is behind the computer screen wishing they were you. Life is funny that way. I canât remember one professor who told us most people have to retake the MCAT or most people donât make it their first year. You donât just come out of college and have the world handed to you. And I wish most 20-somethings would realize how many others are just like them. If you didnât make it to your dream college or graduate school or job, you arenât stupid, and nothing is wrong with you. Youâve been lied to. Please know that your 20s are transitional years just like your teenage years were. You arenât supposed to have everything together yet. Stop comparing yourself to more âsuccessfulâ people your age. Youâre going to do awesome things. Donât doubt yourself.
Study Tips Straight from My Professor
Hi guys! So a lot of our classes are starting today, even with the eclipse so I thought Iâd share some tips my teacher sent out to help everyone get a better grade in the sciences classes, which may or may not be slightly trickier than others. Itâs important to realize that no one can get through all of these, so pick what is most important to you.
1) Put in the time. Using the âthree-to-oneâ rule, three hours of studying outside of class time per one credit hour. If your class is 3 credits, you should be studying independently an additional 9 hours. For 4 credits, 12 hours. Teachers expect you to treat studying as your job (even if you do have an actual job) meaning you should virtually be studying anytime outside of meals, class, sleep, work, etc. > To clarify, this is per week. Not at all per day. You will never be able to shove an appropriate amount of studying per class into one day. Do not try, it is not healthy. 2) NO cramming. It is MUCH more productive to study a little each day rather than 9 hours the day before a test. You will remember virtually nothing if you do and will not be as happy with the grade you recieve. Taking it in little bits stores it in long term memory and you will actually learn it rather than just regurgitating it onto a test. 3) Time management is crucial. Especially if you are someone who works or has kids or other priorities that also need attention. Make a schedule and. Stick. To. It. 4) Be prepared and organized. Do not be the person who lost their pencil and doesnât have an extra, forgot a notebook or textbook, keys, etc. Give yourself enough time so youâre not rushing and make sure you have what you need! Your college professors are not here to attend to your personal needs when some of them have 800+ students a semester. 5) Use a calender. Write down your assignments, projects, class times, anything you need to remember. Use it religiously because it will be so much easier than trying to keep it all inside your head and that way you will not forget anything. 6) Use the book AND the notes. Most professors write things in a different way than the book and reading something in multiple different ways will better help you remember the concept rather than the sentence word for word. 7) Read ahead. Doing so helps you prepare for and not be lost in lecture and it will benefit you as well as the teacher. 8) Attend all/as many classes as you can and be an active listener. Sit up straight, face forward, donât pay attention to what others around you are doing (I sit up front whenever possible). Keep an extra piece of paper near you in case you have questions so you can either ask or go back later and look it up yourself. 9) Take detailed notes. With permission, record the lecture so you can hear it again later, abbreviate whatever you are scribbling down, and then as soon as you can after class, rewrite it in a neater, nicer way and donât be afraid to word things differently. A review shortly after class is proven to help it convert to long term memory. 10) Keep your phone off in class. I know we all love our phones and class is boring, but itâs also crucial information. Weâve all been through that period of regret where we wished we had paid attention. Donât let that happen anymore. Use it only for emergencies and recording lectures. 11) Even if you donât rewrite your notes after class, review them. Make sure to pay attention to anything the teacher may have repeated or any learning objectives they would like for you to know. 12) Study early and often! This goes along with no cramming but the sooner and more repetitively you relay information to your brain, the easier it will be to remember it. If you donât look at the information for 2 weeks and then suddenly need to remember it all, not only will you be too stressed to retain it, youâll also be wasting valuable time. Make your own study guides and test questions. 13) Make flashcards. Flashcards are only useful when you a) shuffle them occasionally and b) take the ones youâve memorized out of the pile but still review them every now and then to make sure you still remember. Put any back in the pile that you missed. 14) Use mnemonic devices for lists of related terms. 15) Type or rewrite your notes. Iâd recommend writing them again, because physical writing by hand is another way to help remember it. 16) Consolidate your material. This means: tables, lists, figures, concept maps. Reasonable chucks. 17) Teach it to someone else. The best way to tell if you have mastered something is that you are able to explain it to someone else correctly in a way that makes sense. 18) Pick a good place for effective studying. We all love our study groups, but letâs be honest. At most the first 20 minutes is talking, then 10 minutes of studying before half the group is surfing Tumblr and the other half is complaining theyâre hungry. I prefer to study by myself for this reason. Find a quiet place with minimal distractions and get prepared to work your fucking ass off. 19) Get decent rest before the exam and be sure to get there early or on time, unpredictable situations included. Exams are important and your teacher will not care if there was a traffic jam. If you miss the exam, you miss the exam. 20) Learn from your mistakes. Review your incorrect exam answers and figure out why it was wrong and why the correct answer was correct. Talk to your teacher, TA, resource lab, anyone who may help you if youâre stuck. 21) Review the midterm and start preparing for finals. Most of the midterm material should be on the final, so itâs one of your best study guides. 22) Keep your textbooks and notes. I know weâre all broke as fuck and would like to sell them back, but you never know when that information will be useful in another class down the road. 23) Do NOT discuss grades, quizzes, tests, or exams with your class mates. Of course theyâll complain that they didnât study, that chapter 6 was this, or chapter 8 said that and it was confusing. This type of conversation will only make you nervous so steer clear of all of it.
Edit: I have made an adjustment to #2 to clarify that the 3 hours of studying/1 credit hour for that class should be per week, not per day. đ
i love this except for the last tip, 23, i physically cannot do that in croatia :( one thing that frustrates me alot. We have oral exams where everyone waits in front of the teachers office for their turn to be examined. Once you enter, do the test, then walk out, your facing 10+ students staring at you and everyone asking simultaneously âWHAT DID YOU GET? DID YOU PASS?â âŚironically its ALWAYS the ones who never talk to you, arent even your friends, who ask this. âŚand of course ALL they talk about for the next 12 hours is the exam and who got what and who got thisâŚÂ
How to Take Control of Negative Emotions
1. Donât take every thought and feeling seriously. Both of those tend to be patterned and habitual. Thus, they are not necessarily accurate and reliable.
2. Donât blow small things out of proportion. Take control of your thinking and keep things in perspective. Donât allow yourself to dwell on negatives, or critical thoughts.
3. Accept that weâre all hit by negative emotions. Itâs a fact of life â and is unavoidable.
4. Work on strategies that work for you, and that help distract you from the way you feel.
5. Deliberately think about more positive things â like what is going well, or the things youâre thankful for â then shrug your shoulders and move on with your day.
6. Notice your triggers â the things that bother you, attack your self esteem and your self confidence â so you recognise the patterns and can plan how best to cope.
Third week of internal medicine almost down! Iâve been learning a lot but also kind of been in a rut, rounding the same patients over and over for two weeks with not much change. Fortunately I discharged two today so there should be some fresh cases coming soon! ⢠How do you guys get out of the rut of chronic, stable patients?

Do u ever wanna punch urself in the face for procrastinating and ruining ur life
yeah but IÂ never get around to it
idk if this is funny or sad
As an educator, I hate the bell curve system, but I really hate teachers who say, âYou wonât get an A in my class.â Itâs not just because it causes students to begin the semester with a feeling that they will fail the course: itâs because it is the teacher admitting to their own failure to teach.Â
We are literally paid to teach a full curriculum. âI donât give out Aâsâ to me translates to âI cannot 100% do my job.â There is no reason a good teacher canât give you an 80-100% understanding of what is in the course. Itâs our job to make sure you understand as much as we can.Â
A class average of 50 is isnât a statement of how hard the material is. Itâs a statement that the teacher cannot complete 50% of their job.
My grandfather was a professor and he always felt this way. He had colleagues who were very proud of their failing statistics and he always said that if students were failing, the teacher was failing. Your job is to teach them to understand the subject matter.
As a teacher, I feel this in my bones
Who does this sort of outlook even benefit? Like, aside from the gross failure to do your job properly and the kids youâd be failing by doing this, does it not also fuck the teacher over during their reviews and stuff?
Science departments really need to understand this
okay but you thinking it tastes good doesnât excuse how fucked up the milk industry is or make it okay to support lmao yâall selfishÂ
Ok bitch listen the fuck up
I am about to get my cert 2 in agriculture. I just studied for two years about this shit. I live in a dairy town - 70% of my district is dairy. I have lived breathed and worked C O W S for almost 730 days. Sit your uneducated ass down and listen to an expert.
Do you have any idea how difficult this industry is to work in cause animal welfare nuts like you have no idea what theyre talking about? We HAVE to treat our animals with care and respect, not just becuase some dumb bint doesnt understand how cows react to being ill, but because its our job. They feed us. They are our jobs. They are living breathing beasts just like us, and they deserve care and respect.
So lets break down that video, if youll lend me your attention for another five minutes. Cows are not immediately taken away from their mother. They are allowed to stay with their mother for one day, which is when they recive an important immuno boost froom their mothers milk - which will allow them to survive their first few months of life. Before their mother is too attached to them, they are put in hutches, which keep them safe from cold, cars, and predators, which cows cant fight while producing milk becuase all of their energy is used for all their milk. Calfs are being protected the best way we can protect them.
We feed them all the high-cell count milk by the way - which is alot anyway; cos newsflash my veggie-guzzling pals, cows make too much milk for their calf to feed on. Thats why we harvest it. They have a surplus. Growing calves require 5 litres a day, if that. Cows produce 30 litres a day. Thats 25 litres that would be sitting in a cows udder, opening the way for infection (as teat infection comes primarily from teats ducts not closing, becuase theyre still full of milk) and exhaustion, becuase 25 litres of milk is 25 extra kilos hanging between your legs. Not fucking fun.
Also, sexual exploitation? Do you not? Realise that the whole purpose of an animals life, accordig to their very own instincts, is reproduction? No other purpose. Literally none. Cows cant become doctors, or teachers or rocket scientists. They cant. All they can do is eat, shit, breathe, moo and eventually die. When we take the excess milk, we also make that rather mundane 20-year lifespan and make it much cushier. They mature at 18 months, by the way. Not 12. Plus, cows actually dont reach maturity and full growth stages until theyve been pregnant once. Their bones dont finish solidifying until theyve had one calf, which opens the birth canal and helps their pelvis accommodate walking. The whole reason you think that this is them being mistreated is becuase you dont understand that they dont get pregnancy issues like we do. They also have nothing else to do in their lives. Cows have emotions and deserve respect, but they are not people, and the same standards one sets for the treatment of people should not be the standard one expects of treatment of a cow.
Bulls are huge, and will hurt the cow. Always. We artificially inseminate becuase its faster, safer and more likely to result in confirmed pregnancy. It also reduces the occurrence of birth defects. Cows colons are huge. Theyre three times the size of us. An arm going up there is in no way harmful, and actually helps us identify cow health. I guess maybe the reason you think that thats gross is because fisting hurts humans so much. Refer to my previous âcow standards =/= human standardsâ statement you kinky pricks.
Cows are not emotionally and physically exhausted by milking. Thats it. thats all i have to say on that matter. They are fed, their health is checked on constantly and they are surrouned by a herd or at least a few other cows 24/7. Theyre mentally and emotionally fucking solid, ok? They are usually totally and completely unfazed their entire lives. The only thing that can really stress out a cow is a human worker acting like a dick. Theyre not that emotionally complicated.
Okay. Sick cows. Guess what? Cows cant tell us when theyre sick. This comes from the fact that theyre herbivores. Sickness or injury makes them a target for predators. So they shut the fuvk up and try to ignore it. What champs. But seriously, cows make 0 fuss when theyre sick. Those cranes? Downed cows sometimes dont get enough calcium, becuase their body poured its entire reserve into the milk. So they will lie down, not make a sound and wait for death, basically. The longer shes down the harder it is for her to get up, so we have to pump calcium into her from a bag and hold her up so her legs dont a t r o p h y underneath her.
Bobby calves, or male calves, are sold for veal. It is the darkest secret in the dairy industry and we are not proud of it. But their throats are not slit. All cows that are killed for beef are shot in the precise spot on their head that will kill them instantly and painlessly.
Listen, i dont mind if you want to swear off beef or pork or whatever. Fine. You do you. But ask someone whos actually educated on this subject before you attempt to paint millions of hard working people as animal abusers becuase you dont understand how something works, or use that misinformation to try and make people agree with you.
Iâm gonna have a big ol bowl of milk and cereal in honor of this person getting BTFOâd so hard their tumblr account isnât up anymore.
to remember how many feet there are in a mile, u just gotta use 5 tomatoes
five to-mate-oes sounds like five, two, eight, 0 and thereâs 5280 feet in a mile
To remember how many meters there are in a kilometre you just remember â1000â because the system of measurement in the rest of the world wasnât invented by a drunk mathematician rolling dice.
please stop asking me about my future ill cry

Hey, unpopular opinion, apparently. But people donât just âhave pain for no reasonâ doctors say this all the time (especially to women and chronically ill people) and the truth is, Thats literally not possible. Even if your pains are psychosomatic (a word I hesitate to even use because of the way its used so often) there is a reason you are having those pains whether its mental illness, abuse, etc. If your doctor consistently tells you that âwell some people just have pain for no reasonâ get a new doctor. Thatâs a doctor who is not going to give a shit what your actual symptoms or experiences are.
I just wanna add to clarify the psychosomatic thing.
That word DOES NOT MEAN youâre making it up. It doesnât mean youâre imagining the symptom. What it means is that the symptom ISNâT DIRECTLY CAUSED BY ANY OF THE THINGS THAT WOULD NORMALLY CAUSE IT.
I fought to get a PCOS diagnosis for 2 and a half years. For the ENTIRE time I was fighting, I was dealing with 3 cysts that were not going away by themselves and eventually required surgery to remove. At one point close to the end of the battle, I suddenly went blind. I was visiting my parents and was standing on the veranda looking out over the tree we had planted in memory of my dog and suddenly I got one of the shooting pains that I was quite frankly used to at that point and my vision started to go dark. It was like the sun was setting while being completely hidden behind storm clouds but it was 2pm in the middle of Summer on a clear day. Within about 30 seconds I couldnât see ANYTHING. I was 27 years old and I was screaming for my mother.
My mum raced me to her doctor (he was a 15 minute drive away as opposed to 45 minutes to the nearest hospital) and he quickly worked out that there was nothing wrong with my eyes and what had happened was totally unrelated to them. Then he said it was psychosomatic and I freaked out, yelling that I was NOT making this up and I definitely wasnât imagining it. Very quickly he calmed me down and said he believed me and I had misunderstood. He explained that whatever was going on with my abdominal pains (he suggested PCOS which I hadnât even heard of at that point) had been ignored for so long that my body was starting to do things other than the normal pain response to try to draw my attention to the problem. My sight going was my body basically jumping around in front of me going âHEY ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME HELLLOOOOOOO??????â
He gave me some prescription strength painkillers and my sight started to come back as soon as they started to kick in. About 45 minutes after it started I could see well enough to walk around without help and within a day and a half I was back to normal. On top of that I finally had a scan booked to figure out what the hell was causing all the pain.
Psychosomatic symptoms are NOT imagined or fabricated or happening for âno reasonâ. Experiencing them DOES NOT make you a liar. It makes you someone who has been battling with something serious for so long that your own body has started to get impatient with you.
I completely agree. Thank you for sharing this.
