My turn to talk about fictional gays.

The way that Ilya maintains a sense of control over his life is two ways: hockey and having fun. Shane has a life where his parents genuinely care about him and allow him to make choices of sponsors and vacation plans. Ilya doesn’t.

At least before his father’s… yeah, Ilya is facing enormous pressure to be perfect and successful always. He also is being demeaned by his own family, and the person he supports financially. He must feel like he can never be himself in his home and so he must cut loose. Party and fuck.

And when he comes to Shane… Shane is all about what Ilya wants. No way he will pass that up, even to demand that Shane keep his glasses on. Ilya might seem like an asshole, but to me he is in-part keeping sane. And yes, Shane does like it, as it’s just acts, not part of Ilya’s nature inherently. Ilya’s nature is caring, even if its caring for his own teen self.
