Can teachers PLEASE stop mixing up representation and intent

I read a book that contains elements that represent racism and how it can affect people and my teacher says the book is bad because it’s racist. I’m sorry? The black character subverted all the stereotypes and you still called it racist because the white character acted racist towards them and they got hurt? Oh well I guess we aren’t allowed to represent things anymore. It’s not like we want people to actually learn about racism and be able to spot it nonono racism must be completely ignored. Can’t have a racist character now can we? It might humanize them and show that racist people exist and can be hiding in plain sight. It might spread awareness on what racist people are like and how racism can manifest haha. Wouldn’t want that! We are going to tell our children that this book is bad because it has racism in it even though it is literally fucking showing why racism is bad and we will never tell them why racism is bad so that they will grow up to think “aw it was all just an overreaction the lied to us!” And become FUCKING RACISTS.

Also can we please stop mixing up representation with relatability. I started talking about how this little short film was good representation of an abusive household, and my teacher said “You mean audiences can relate to it?” I said that while that is true that’s not what I mean. I meant it was good representation and can spread awareness of what an abusive household is so we can spot it and understand why it is wrong and how it affects the victim, and she simply replied with “…so the children can relate to it.” NO. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RELATE TO SOMETHING FOR IT TO BE GOOD. Put yourself in SOMEONE ELSES SHOES FOR ONCE.
