I cannot trust the artistic opinions of anybody who can't frankly admit that the vast majority of whatever's produced in their chosen medium (books, film, etc) is unsalvageable pigslop. But also that dogshit amateur art is critical for said medium. AND that pigslop and amateur dogshit is different
Publishing is largely a machine cranking out entire forests' worth of garbage not worth reading. AND your unedited, barely-coherent 500k word Super Smash Bros fanfiction is vital for the soul to flourish. There is no contradiction here
I'm deeply worried about people interpreting that post about pigslop as me going "Fanfiction is JUST AS GOOD as an adult novel about DIVORCE or whatever"
I guess my more fleshed out opinion is that if you work at a used bookstore or library long enough you're either going to become a massive relativist ("Every Book Is Magical") or you're going to be like oh wow nothing is safe from the relentless pursuit of profit above all else and I'm in the latter camp. I'm not quite so cynical as to be immune to admittedly airy philosophies about ~The Importance of Art~ as a personal pursuit though. It's when you start making money chasing these stupid publishing trends where I'm like, okay no you have crossed the line out of the Amateur Protection Zone and into my crosshairs. (Part of my concern is that my gripes frankly include a large number of things you'd you'd find on, say, a large Barnes and Noble display, many of which have thriving fandoms on this site)
And I feel this way about movies as well, though I know less about movies than books. Just a ton of deeply tasteless, poor quality garbage juice being pumped out on the daily, defended by people whose primary engagement with said art is Escapism Above All Else, armed with Let People Enjoy Things reaction images in response to even the mildest criticism. And like sure I don't think anybody is obligated to have more serious relationships with art but it's hard not to notice that the It's Not That Serious God Lighten Up party is currently winning the culture war or what the fuck ever and I worry me being like "Hey the things you create don't need to be polished, sincerity is an increasingly rare quality in an increasingly online, image-conscious world, the process is so much more important than the end result" is going to be misinterpreted by the very crowd I'm critiquing
