I made Hazel a musician for two reasons:

1. People often say music is what unites people. Hazel is somebody who struggles to make friendship through conversation or verbal communication. He often uses his music to express himself and make connections. This is also why I inspired him off of Caribbean culture.

2. He is inspired off of Orpheus. Much like Orpheus, how Hazel feels affects the songs he performs. And like Orpheus, his songs affect to mood of those around him. He’s like a bard of sorts. + Hazel would turn around for Leola.

Percy Jackson: In my first book the readers are shown my perspective as a teen with ADHD who is often mistreated, setting me up as a relatable protagonist.

The Baudelaires: In our first book we are treated horribly after a tragic accident and are constantly stuck in dismay, setting us up as sympathetic protagonists.
