Hate crimes against transgender people are up 125% in LA
Hate crimes against transgender individuals in Los Angeles County surged by 125% in 2023, with 97% of these crimes being violent, according to a report by the LA County Human Relations Commission.
LA Public Press reports that the county recorded 1,350 hate crimes overall, a 45% increase from 2022, marking the highest number since data collection began in 1980. Hate crimes against transgender people represented the largest increase.
The report linked the overall rise in hate crimes to national political rhetoric and improved reporting systems. Experts highlighted the role of divisive political discourse, particularly targeting transgender and LGBTQ+ communities. High-profile incidents, such as threats and attacks on the TransLatin@ Coalition, were cited as emblematic of the violence faced by these groups.
Key findings included:
LGBTQ+ hate crimes rose 48%, making this group the second most targeted.
The majority of gender-based hate crime suspects were male (86%), and many incidents occurred in public spaces (58%).
Anti-Black crimes represented nearly half of racially motivated hate crimes, despite Black residents comprising only 9% of the county population.
Religion-based hate crimes spiked 90%, and anti-Asian crimes increased by 31%.
Community leaders emphasized the need for education, partnerships, and stronger enforcement to address hate crimes. While the increase in reports may reflect greater victim confidence in coming forward, officials stressed that rhetoric fueling polarization and intolerance continues to have dangerous consequences.

To sacrifice trans people is operating within a fascist logic, renowned feminist Judith Butler says
In a recent interview with El País the philosopher and gender researcher Judith Butler emphasizes the dangers of targeting minority groups, such as transgender people, as a political scapegoat, calling it a hallmark of fascist logic.
Butler: "Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic, because that means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice, and a third, a fourth, and then what happens?"
Butler criticizes policies and rhetoric that sacrifice vulnerable communities to secure political power, suggesting that such actions undermine the principles of democracy and human rights.
She also highlights how these practices fuel division and serve authoritarian agendas by marginalizing specific groups for political gain.
The philosopher underscores the importance of defending trans rights as a critical component of broader social justice movements. She argues that maintaining solidarity with minority groups is essential to resisting authoritarianism and fostering a more inclusive society.
El Pais: "Do you understand the concerns of feminists who think that gender could result in the erasure of women?" Butler: "Some feminists, I think unwittingly, have allied themselves in places like the U.K. and Spain with the far right when it comes to instigating this phantasm about gender. I understand those fears, but that doesn’t mean that I think they’re based on knowledge. Perhaps those feminists need a better understanding of who trans people are. Womanhood won’t be erased just because we open the category and invite some more people in. This is a moment for expanding alliances, not to have sectarian struggles about bathrooms. Women know what it’s like to be denied health care. They are currently being deprived of access to reproductive health in several parts of the world, including the U.S. Women know how difficult and necessary it is to struggle for autonomy. So why would they not support trans struggles for health care and to live free of the fear of violence?"

Honolulu's Glade Nightclub was an important meeting place for trans people in the 1960s
Mitchell Kuga has written an interesting article about the 1960s meeting place for Honolulu's Māhū and transgender community:
Remembering the 1960s Bar That Became a Refuge for Honolulu's Māhū Community
Here are some of the main points:
Historical Significance: The Glade nightclub in Honolulu’s Red Light District became a refuge for the māhū community in the 1960s, offering a space for gender fluid performers amidst widespread persecution.
Cultural Impact: The “Boys Will Be Girls Revue” was a groundbreaking show that ran for 17 years, attracting diverse audiences and helping to change public perceptions of the māhū community.
Persecution and Resilience: Performers faced significant harassment and legal challenges, including the “intent to deceive” law, but they often fought back and supported each other.
Legacy and Recognition: The Glade’s history is now being memorialized by institutions like the Bishop Museum and the City of Honolulu, highlighting its importance as a queer landmark.
Read the article here.
Māhū ("in the middle") are seen as third gender people with spiritual and social roles. Historically, the term māhū referred to people assigned male at birth. In 2003 the term mahuwahine was created within Hawaii's LGBTQ community: māhū + wahine ("woman"). The structure of the word is similar to Samoan fa'a (the way of) + fafine (woman/wife).
Remember, a month ago a woman in Atlanta, GA also set herself on fire in protest outside of the Israeli Embassy there. Her name was never revealed as her case was largely covered up, just as they tried to do with Aaron Bushnell’s act. Disturbing and unfortunate that live streaming is necessary to know the truth.
