About the author (me): My name is Jo, I also occasionally go by LJ but not that much. I’ve been writing since I was 8 and it’s one of my biggest passions. I have a hard time holding on to one project at a time but I tend to always come back to them in cycles. It will be rare for me not to want to gush about TC, though.

So, I have a few different parts of my story where my characters take boats and trains to various places in the world. What do you guys do for really long travel scenes?

Before:

Acacius was 16 when he was drafted into the Solarian military. A year later, his fleet—the group of the youngest soldiers all of whom were there against their will—was attacked by an unmarked ship and veered off course. His commander had died in the attack and the rest of the crew knew nothing. The island of Naamil wasn’t full of much, many abandoned houses and buildings, a few people lived there, they believed themselves to be cursed by the gods after what happened to the rest of their people. Acacius felt that him and his men could save the island. The islanders had little hope since they lost so many of their own and agreed to let him try.

The Crimsons:

Soon, they were stealing ships, weapons, money, and food. They found those down on their luck, bored, or in need and took them back to the island. Soon, The Crimsons were formed. Acacius didn’t enjoy handling everything himself: an all great countries had a government. From that need came the Coterie: the highest authority on the island. He had a citadel built for them, bedrooms in the highest points, a meeting room in the middle, and a ballroom at the bottom to connect with their people. First came Yara, then Miras, Leilani, Aspen, Pele, Caelus, Cordellia, and Lottie Jay. Adaeze was the last, but she was very important, she had the one thing even he didn’t: the favor of the gods.

Before:

Yara Sane was married off to a Solarian man the day she turned 18. She was packed into a ship and sent to wed the Marquess Alamani in a kingdom she knew nothing about and barely spoke the language of. Luckily, there was someone else on that ship. Acacius Crane and the small symbol he adorned everything with came to be a common occurrence in her life. He was a visionary, he told her, she could join him if it weren’t for her husband. They stayed in touch, Acacius taught her Solarian and was the only one who knew of her husband’s violent habits. Two years after they met, Yara’s husband was dead; Acacius always knew nightshade was her favorite plant.

The Crimsons:

The day after her husband’s funeral, Yara was on a ship for Naamil, soon she would be a Crimson: she would be Acacius’ right hand woman. It didn’t stay that way for long: Acacius hated doing the dirty work and Yara wanted to protect her people, it was never meant to last; but Yara had sacrificed too much to accept defeat.

Leilani knew from a very young age that she didn’t have a choice in most anything when it came to her own life. She had been born to fulfill a deal. At least Nikos Quillion was a Baron. But he didn’t care for anything or anyone but the money he made.

The Crimsons:

When a group of criminals cloaked in deep red stormed the fairgrounds during the Spring Solstice Festival, she followed them all the way to their ship.

Her husband had never cared much for her political knowledge, but Acacius Crane did. The Crimson Coterie knew exactly what to do with her.

Before: Cordellia was born to a poor sailor’s family in Aquaria, the kingdom of water. On a voyage to the capital she was kidnapped off the streets and taken to be used for indentured servitude.

The Crimsons: After a year away from home, a man by the name of Acacius Crane and his milita stormed the building she was being held in and took almost all those being held to his island. The trauma gave her selective mutism and memory issues, but Acacius didn’t mind: no one would suspect her this way (and Cordellia was a damn good swordsman). From that day forth, Cordellia Caspian was a Crimson. She got a lot of tattoos because Yara told her it would be easier to identify her, therefore making her a harder target.

Eventually, when the old intel gatherer died on a job, Cordellia was promoted and granted access to the Crimsons top priority group, the Coterie.
