AHAB CEELEY was born in the dizzying wake of a small town scandal resulting in the capital punishment of his father. Jericho Ceeley was tried for witchcraft, found guilty, and presently burned at the stake. His wife went mad with grief and betrayal, which subsequently led to the Church taking custody of her son, a few months before her death.
It wasn’t long until Ahab began to show magical tendencies of his own, and the Priest overseeing the church grounds had a choice to make: to condemn the boy to execution, or send him to an institution to be cured. For whatever reason, he chose the latter, and a matron, who happened to be a witch, at a convent further inland in Massachusetts suggested the Ilvermorny School.
Ahab was raised without any knowledge of his wizardry until the July of his eleventh year when the priest handed him off to the matron, who dropped off at Mount Greylock.
He was sorted into Thunderbird, and chosen by a wand made by Violetta Beauvais. It was about twelve inches long and made of swamp mayhaw with a baleen centre. Ahab dubbed it Pequod, but no one knew why.
After graduation, Ahab remained in the no - maj world for a few decades, working on whaling ships as a harpooner. He was eventually on a ship with a wizard crew, hunting for sea serpents in the Blackstone River in central Massachusetts, near Ilvermorny, when he was pulled out of the longboat and his leg was bitten off.
Despite his thirst for vengeance, he took a hiatus from sailing in order to better understand the sea serpent with the intention of finding the one that took his leg and killing it. His vast field knowledge made him a fine candidate for a job teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts at Ilvermorny.
His teaching style was unorthodox and, because of his Quaker style of speech, at times hard to follow. Often, at night, he could be seen hobbling down to the riverside to hunt down the famous sea serpent. It wasn’t wise to patronise him the following day, as he was usually more irritable, erratic, and tired than usual.
When he wasn’t seeking his revenge, he was a fairly approachable professor, even though he spent his spare time holed up in his cavern of an office. He was an advocate for students of any walk of life, no matter their differences, and had a very pragmatic and holistic approach on both teaching and discipline. His philosophy fit well within the very liberal and young atmosphere of Ilvermorny, but was rather looked down upon within the international wizarding community.
