What they did to Dean is tragic. I know people have problems with cas's death, but it was way more respectful than deans. Cas died a hero, his declaration of love saved the world. Cas was at peace with himself and his choice to do it for the man he loved. Dean died to make man-pain for Sam. Dean died tired and scared on a rusty nail. Dean died believing he deserved it. he died thinking that it was always going to end that way for him. Cas's entire arc got rounded out fully. He got to be happy. He got to express his truth. Dean didn't get to express his truth. Maybe some people don't believe that dean loves cas back in a romantic way but I do. And even if you don't think that, it's certainly canon that he loves cas. Deans arc of finding himself, being happy with himself, learning to have faith, it all lead back to cas. Dean having his brother Sam AND CAS was his happy ending. Whether or not you think dean recriprocates. Say, if he does recriprocate, isn't it a better story? Isn't it beautiful? Dean was the man who was afraid of flying, the man who never prayed, the man who had no faith. And yet, that man found cas. Cas changed him too. Cas was interesting in Deans humanity, and dean was interested in his divineness. Dean, for the first time, understood that maybe the two, humanity and the supernatural, weren't that different at all. He found something supernatural to have faith in, something to love that loved him back. Because of cas, dean was able to love himself. Because of cas, dean was able to see everything good about himself. Dean found himself unable to love an angel, and that angel loved him selflessly untill dean understood he deserved it. Because of cas, dean understood he wasn't a killer. Because of cas, dean got to love and be loved in a way he never had. THAT is deans truth. Dean never got to express his truth, it was censored. We can imagine dean found his way to cas in the heaven cas and Jack built for him, but there's enough vagueness that people can still deny it. Dean never got to EXPRESS his truth. He died in a way he never deserved, and he didn't even get his angel. All he was allowed to do was drive around untill Sam showed up. What about dean himself? Dean loves Sam of course, but dean didn't get to ever feel like he was more than his brothers caretaker. He didn't because to acknowledge any growth would be to acknowledge cas, the man who changed him. Cas's love for dean and deans love for cas was CENSORED in that final episode. It was hollow. Empty. Devoid of the arcs their characters had been building too. Everyone suffered for it. Sam and Eileen couldn't be happy, because they had to be alone and broken together. Just two brothers, not growing or changing or evolving into the best versions of themselves. Dean and Cas's beautiful love story was censored and it broke everything.
