SUMMARY:Â Brooklyn, 1924. During their rise to fame, two professional boxers at the beginning of their careers meet and begin a turbulent affair. Set to the backdrop of opulent parties, dark-lit speakeasies, and the bright spotlight of the championship ring, Dean and Cas get caught up in boxing's seedy underworld.
CHAPTER PREVIEW:
Castiel snapped jabs and crosses against the bag in rapid salvo.
âFaster! Câmon. Picture somebody you hate and knock their lights out!â
The only thing Castiel pictured was punching through the bag to Lucâs face.
âNow weâre talking!â Luc shouted. âStraight line with your hips, champ. Think about the physics.â
When Castielâs arms started to tire again, he braced his knees, sitting into it to work the levels, to punch lower on the bag before slowly rising higher again.
When even that started to fail him, he tried to distract himself by glancing around the gym. For some reason, a few of the other boxers were watching him instead of focusing on their own training. But they werenât very interesting, and they didnât distract Castiel from his fatigue.
Nothing did. Not until his eyes latched onto the man who had just walked through the door.
Dean.
He surveyed the gym, seeming to take in the cacophony of the place before his eyes began to wander in Castielâs general direction. Castielâs stomach plunged to his shoes. He tore his gaze away so they wouldnât make eye contact. At the same time, he stepped slightly to the side, praying the bag would hide him from view. Maybe Dean hadnât seen him yet.
Surely, Dean couldnât have been there for him. This must have been a coincidence. How would Dean even find him?
But when Castiel risked a peek, Dean was walking right toward him. Deanâs gait was loose and easy. He wore a beaten brown leather jacket over pleated trousers and a slim-fitting knit shirt. A straw boater hat sat atop his head. As he approached, he swiveled his head around to eye one of the men doing chest presses on a bench.
Castiel hadnât realized heâd stopped punching until Luc reprimanded him. âWhatâsâa matter? I didnât say stop.â
âIâŚâ Castielâs mouth was agape, but the only thing that came out of it was hot air.
Heâd wondered if heâd ever see Dean again. Heâd figured, if it ever happened, theyâd return to being strangers again. Heâd never anticipated that Dean would accost him at his gym. Yet, there he was, coming to a stop right next to Castielâs heavybag. His grin was broad and handsome, and his eyes were much greener in the daylight than theyâd been at the party.
âHey there, Cas. Howâs tricks?â
âWho the hell are you?â Luc asked, practically looking down his nose at Dean. He pointed his finger and waved it up and down Deanâs body. âJudging from the get-up, Iâm guessing youâre not trying to steal our bag.â
âThis is Dean Winchester,â Castiel said before Dean could answer. âHeâs⌠an acquaintance.â
Dean tipped his head in a kind of nod and said, âOh, yeah, weâre real well acquainted. Mind if I have a second with Cas here?â
Castiel hoped Luc would say no. Unfortunately, he said to Castiel, âI better go see if our guyâs here yet, anyway. Be back in five.â
Castiel hoped that his expression remained blank. He thought some of his fraught energy was showing in his eyes when Luc walked off, leaving him alone with Dean.
Dean, whose lips were still pressed into a sly smile. His eyes were shining. Castiel busied himself with taking off his gloves to avoid Deanâs gaze.
âLookinâ pretty good without the bruises,â Dean said, leaning his shoulder gently against the bag.
âWhat do you want?â Castiel demanded, hoping to move this along.
Dean reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out his fist, holding it out. âYou left these behind the other night. Thought you might want them back,â he said as he dropped two gold items onto Castielâs wrapped palm.
At first, Castiel didnât recognize themâand then he remembered. They were cufflinks heâd bought for the party, but only because Daphne had been distraught by the fact that he hadnât been dressed to the theme.
âOh,â he said. He hadnât realized heâd even lost them. He folded his fingers over them, and all he could focus on was how warm they were from Deanâs bodyheat. Castiel stuffed them into the pocket of his sweatpants. âThank you. For bringing them to me. It wasnât necessary.â
Dean shrugged. Why was he still smiling? Had Castiel done something amusing?
âWell, you know. Figured they might have some sentimental value.â His eyes dragged up and down Castiel in a way that made Castiel too aware of the sweat pooling on his clothes. He glanced down at Deanâs faded two-toned shoes.
âWhy would they?â he asked, his eyes flickering back up even though he tried to stop them.
Deanâs features rearranged, going from confused to surprised and then back to confused. âWait,â he said, standing up from the bag and leveling one of his palms between them. There was a dusting of freckles across his knuckles. âYou really didnât mean to leave those for me to find?â
Castiel tilted his head, because now he was confused, too. âWhy would I purposefully forget them?â
âSo Iâd bring them back to you!â Dean said, both of his arms flying out to the sides. âSo weâd see each other again. Itâs the oldest trick in the book.â
âWhat book?â
Dean gaped for a long second. âThe book!â
He wasnât making any sense. Castiel shook his head, irritation spiking. He was tired and hungry and he didnât have time for this. âDean, I donât know about any book. And I certainly wasnât trying to trick you.â
Castiel thought that would be it and Dean would leave. But Dean continued to linger, still staring at Castiel, but in a guarded way now. He stayed quiet.
âDid you⌠come here for something else?â Castiel guessed.
It seemed to knock Dean out of his stupor. He stood a little straighter and his lips twisted. Castiel thought the tips of his pointed ears were slightly pinker than before. âNo. Nope. All good.â
âOkay.â Why was he still standing there? âGoodbye, Dean.â
âYeah. See ya, Cas.â Dean turned away and walked off quickly, seeming much stiffer than he had been when heâd entered.
Castiel watched him for a long moment before turning away. He was about to pick his gloves up from the floor and find Luc, but then something Dean said hit him.
Dean had returned the cufflinks because he thought Castiel wanted to see him again. Did that mean Dean wanted to see Castiel again?
