The first of September 1991 is a momentous day for Ginny Weasley.
She expects it to be, because it’s the day when the last of her big brothers heads off to school and leaves her all alone.
Which sucks.
But—much to her surprise and delight, the 1st of September 1991 turns out to be momentous for a much better reason than that, because on 1st September 1991, Ginny meets him.
Harry Potter!
The Harry Potter, the one she’s read about and talked about and dreamed about for practically her whole life. Not that he spoke to her or anything, but she saw him. He was there right in front of her, the actual, real, him, he spoke to her mum and her brothers and everything!
On the second of September, when she’s alone and bored, this is what inspires her to come up with a new way to fill her time. After all, she has so much more time to fill now that she doesn’t have Ron to play with. Or argue with.
First, she steals two of her mother’s old wooden clothes pegs. Then, she fetches her box of crayons and carefully decorates them, concentrating hard, tongue poking out just a fraction in the way that Ron would tease her for, if he was here.
She gives one of the pegs orange hair and brown eyes. The other receives black hair and green eyes, and a lightning shaped scar on his forehead.
Ginny is very proud of them
After she’s spent a suitable amount of time admiring her handiwork, she settles on the rag rug on the floor of her bedroom with her brand new Harry-and-Ginny clothes peg dolls and plays with them all afternoon.
It is glorious.
She pretends that Harry becomes her best friend, and they play quidditch together. She pretends that Harry is a brave hero who rescues her from a terrible monster. But her very favourite thing is when she pretends that Harry Potter is her boyfriend.
“Ginny!” says the Harry-peg, in Ginny’s best Harry-voice. “There is something I have to say to you!”
“Really, Harry? What is that?” asks the Ginny-peg.
“You are the most amazing-est girl in the whole world, Ginny, and I am in love with you!” declares the Harry-peg. “Please will you marry me, as soon as possible?”
“Oh Harry!” swoons the Ginny-peg. “Of course I will marry you!”
The Harry-peg jumps up and down with excitement. “Great! I will get a ring, and we will have a wedding!”
As Ginny makes the Harry-peg kiss the Ginny-peg, she wonders if one day, the real Harry Potter might play quidditch with her, or fight a monster for her, or fall in love with her.
Smiling, she tucks the Harry-peg and the Ginny-peg in her pocket and heads to the linen cupboard. Maybe she can find a white handkerchief that she could fashion into a wedding dress for the Ginny-peg?
Unfortunately, she is interrupted by her mum, calling from the kitchen; it’s time for dinner, so the great handkerchief heist will have to wait until tomorrow. Ginny sighs happily. The third of September is going to be a busy day; after all, she’s got a wedding to plan.
