Gender and sexuality are two major parts of our identity; so no matter what facet of our life it is, whether be it our social life, work-life, academic life, familial life; our sexual orientation and gender identity impacts it all.    We all have gone through adolescence and can accept the fact that it can be confusing and challenging. Think of how efficient it would be if teenagers today were educated about this in school. They won’t have to spend hours, months, years of their lives struggling with their identity. We can’t leave it to chance that kids will learn on their own since not every kid has access to the internet, or that parents will teach them since most parents aren’t equipped to teach on this subject. 

Our own society can make us feel alienated when there is no awareness or acceptance of different Gender identities and Sexual orientations. 

At least that’s how I felt all throughout my teenage years, different and ununderstood. It took me many years to figure out that I’m Ace, 19 to be exact, all because there isn’t much awareness about this identity in my circles.

I wanted to help anyone questioning their gender or sexual identity by putting together this guide. It’s something I wish existed and was accessible to me when I was young. I’ll be glad to know if this helps even one person.

There are some school kids on the table next to us in McDonald’s practicing their friend’s new ‘they/them' pronouns.

“If we practice now then think how happy they’ll be on Monday at school.”

Shoutout to the people whose parents support lgbt rights but never told their kids until they were in their teens or twenties because they said it was “difficult to explain to children”.

Shoutout to the people whose religious communities came out in support just a little too late.

Shoutout to everyone afraid to come out just because they know they’ll be safe physically but they don’t know how everything will change socially.

Shoutout to everyone whose internalized homophobia that they’re trying to overcome came from subtle cues and not explicit statements.

let’s set the record straight, shall we? 

I don’t hate straight people. 

when I make a post criticizing a behavior of straight people that’s unconsciously derived from privilege and heteronormativity, that’s not the same as hating them. I would literally do the same exact thing to my friends who are LGB and cis (aka not under the T) that express transphobic beliefs–call them out and tell them to work on their internalized bullshit. 

here, let me make it clearer for you: 

I don’t hate straight people, but I hate it when they make gay jokes.

I don’t hate straight women, but I hate it when straight women ask about the private details of gay men’s sex lives because they get off to it.

I don’t hate straight men, but I hate it when they brag about being attractive enough to turn lesbians bisexual and bisexuals straight.

if I hated straight men, I wouldn’t call them out on their creepy words and behaviors. 

if I hated straight women, I wouldn’t bother taking the time to explain why it’s homophobic of them to gush about their favorite “””yaoi””” couple, and then turn around and say they don’t feel comfortable sharing a locker room with lesbians because “ew, what if they’re attracted to me??” 

I don’t hate straight people. I understand that, because they’re born into a privilege I don’t have the luxury of affording, they will be blind to most of the issues that make my life a daily struggle. 

they are much more powerful and valuable to me as allies than enemies, and I will try my hardest to willingly engage in respectful discussions in attempts to educate them about my marginalization, because I know that any decent straight person will have enough compassion to see past just my sexuality while simultaneously acknowledging that it’s a part of me. 

it’s not “heterophobia” to say I’m sick of straight people assuming I’ll end up with a man, and it’s not “cisphobia” to ask cigender people to respect my gender neutral pronouns. so, don’t act like my criticisms of bigoted behavior are on par with systematic oppression.if I hated them, you better believe I’d let them be shitty.
