I’ve struggled with being black my WHOLE life. I went to an all white elementary school, and felt out of place. I tried to fit in with the pretty skinny white girls around me. I was the funny black girl to them. They saw me as entertainment for them rather than their equal or friend. I stared listening to Taylor Swift, and begged my mom to let me get a perm so my hair could be straight like my “friends”. It was so bad y’all, like at one point I remember wanting to be white. I would have conversations with god and ask him why he had to make me black. When I went into the sixth grade there were so many people that looked like me and shared the same struggles as me. But, those girls made me feel insecure to because I was too “WHITE”. Me being my goofy self wasn’t fun anymore it was annoying and I wasn’t about that life so I was a “weak bitch”. Black girls made me feel like I wasn’t black enough, calling me an Oreo and saying that I was confused. And maybe I was though. Like I was stuck between who I was and who I thought I had to be constantly. I had spent six years trying to be “white” and now that I was at a school with black girls I felt so disconnected to my culture, because I didn’t act like the other black girls. But now I know who I am. Alexis, a pro-black feminist who knows her worth and is blinded by melanin on a daily basis.
