Hoshidan Festival: Selena and Caeldori Parent-Child Convo
I already posted this one on my FE blog and and reprinting it here with some alterations.
Both Cordelia and her daughter Severa were among my favorite female characters in Awakening, so I was stoked that Severa would appear again in Fates, albeit under an alias (Luna/Selena). I was even happier when I played through Birthright for the first time and saw that one of the child-generation Hoshidan characters was essentially a clone of Cordelia! It didn’t take long for Subaki and Selena to become my favorite couple in the game, due to the interesting story arc involving Subaki helping Selena/Severa come to terms with herself, and Caeldori helping Selena work through her feelings about her mother.
Since I had Fates on the brain, I wanted to go and revisit one of my favorite conversations from this festival DLC. Subaki and Selena are my favorite couple in this game, and I love that being with Subaki and having Caeldori as her daughter seems to give Selena some closure.
Come to think of it, now that Caeldori was recently added to Fire Emblem Heroes, the whole family: Cordelia, many of her husband candidates (I always pair her with Ricken), Selena, Subaki, and Caeldori, are all together in one game! Yay! Big happy family! I....hope.

Hoshidan Festival: Peri and Ophelia Parent-Child Conversation
I refreshed myself on Peri and Odin’s support conversations before writing this, and realized I’d totally forgotten about it. It’s cute! It involves Peri going to an anger management class and becoming the head of their society. While their conversation isn’t actually mentioned, it kind of ties in here, as Peri seems to think of her murderous tendencies as a problem and is proud of Ophelia for coming up with a self-control spell. Also, this is one of the few places int he game where Peri’s mismatched irises are mentioned! That’s pretty cool. I wonder if Ophelia would someday be able to manufacture a spell to change her own eye color, hmm… Or maybe she’ll invent colored contacts.
I’ve been dabbling into translation a bit again, and we’re trying to get these finished off! I’ve set an arbitrary goal of finishing them off before Nintendo kills of the 3DS eShop channel. Goodbye, good friend... Sniff... There’s only about 5 more to go! It’s been nice revisiting the Fates characters. It’s been so long since I played that game, hehe.
I’ve been experimenting with dabbling in fanfiction for the past couple years too, just haven’t published anything. It is really hard to write and maintain a narrative when dealing with the Covid-induced brain fog, but since I started a routine of a bit of moderate exercise every day, it seems to help--to a point. I can focus on writing or even translating for a few minutes at a time, but only a few minutes. It feels like I’ve been working on something for HOURS when in reality it’s only been like 10-15 minutes. But, hey, that’s better than doing nothing at all, right? It’s just...slow.
Decided to pair up some of the Nohrian and Hoshidan Festival of Bonds conversations that I love with the translations from @fe14festivalofbondstranslations since the DLCs were never officially localized and I wanted everyone to be able to experience them with sounds and character portraits.
First up, Xander and Siegbert's adorably awkward father-son relationship.
Someone sent me this link a few days ago to a wiki that does an excellent, excellent job of pointing out regional differences (and other interesting facts) about all the FE games! The link leads to the Fates page, so check it out!
Personally, the trimming down of the S-support conversations was the thing that irked me the most about the English version...
And after being nearly bedridden for the last 2-3 weeks with the Covid symptoms yet again, I am seriously considering giving up even trying to write, keep up with social media or any community, etc. Really hate to do that, but I can't keep up, and occasionally attempting to try seems to be having a negative effect on my physical and mental health. But, we'll see. I will leave everything I've written, I just won't dare to write anything new unless I have a really good, headache-free day or something. I miss being able to think clearly, speak normally and breathe comfortably. Even now I’m making a huge effort to write through a mind-numbing headache, and had to do tons of editing. --; And I miss tasting things properly. It's been nearly 11 months now since I got Covid, so I don't know why I'm still so sick. Doctor thinks I suffered some serious nerve damage, and can’t be sure it will ever heal, but...guess we'll see. At their recommendation, I’ve somehow been able to keep up with a light exercise routine, and while it hasn’t seemed to have hurt anything (except maybe making headaches and dizziness worse sometimes), it’s not helping my energy levels and respiratory symptoms, either! ><
Just wanted to share this video, because I really enjoyed it. While if/Fates isn’t the best in the series story-wise, I still really enjoyed it and put lots and lots of hours into it. (Mostly support grinding/grinding in general, lol. That’s how I spend approximately 75% of my time in any Fire Emblem game that allows infinite grinding, actually… Am I weird?) I have always wanted to see the full story concept as originally written, though it would be a bear to translate, and something I can’t do right now, maybe never. Still, I wish it would be released so someone else could translate it.
My only real beef with the North American localization was the paring down of a lot of the S-support conversations, the removal of the spicier S-support treehouse lines (they really made Corrin & spouse seem like a real couple to me!), and the decision to not translate the festival DLC. Overall, I prefer the Japanese version of the game.
Reminds me, I want to get out the game to look at the Ghostly Gold DLC… The text that pops up for each character when they first attack is different between the English and Japanese versions, and sports some of the weirder localization changes. I specifically remember Hinata’s for some reason: in English, he says something like he can “almost smell the bacon and eggs,” which is very much NOT a type of meal you’d eat at a traditional Japanese breakfast, and that just struck me as such an odd line. In Japanese he talks about how hard it was to stay awake all night, but is now excited, fully awake and ready to spar. He does not mention any sort of food, if I recall.

FE3H Translation Comparison: Two Support Convos (Sylvain/Ingrid C, Byleth/Edelgard C)
I started working on this post well before I got Covid, so this post and one other have been stewing in a document on my PC for a year or more. Wow. I’d say thinking of that makes my head hurt, but my head always hurts…
So this first change is pretty well known, I think. I’ve seen it mentioned in a couple of other places.
FE3H Translation Comparison: Two Support Convos (Sylvain/Ingrid C, Byleth/Edelgard C)
I started working on this post well before I got Covid, so this post and one other have been stewing in a document on my PC for a year or more. Wow. I’d say thinking of that makes my head hurt, but my head always hurts...
So this first change is pretty well known, I think. I’ve seen it mentioned in a couple of other places.
Sylvain/Ingrid C Support Conversation:
Switch the language to Japanese, and...
Ingrid: “When you were ten, at a show at a harvest festival, you tried to flirt with a man dressed in women’s clothing...”
Student: “Whoah, Sylvain even flirts with men...”
I like to imagine that both of those things happened at that harvest festival, and Ingrid decides to talk about something different depending on the language her text is in. Out of curiosity, I also checked the Spanish and German versions. Both had the same dialog as the English version for this part of the conversation (the scarecrow). I’d like to check more, but haven’t get around to it yet.
But I haven’t seen as much attention drawn to this support conversation change. I’ve probably just missed it, but still... It really shocked me!
Byleth/Edelgard C Support Conversation:
Select “I was restless.”
Ever wondered why she gets so flustered by that second option?
In the Japanese version, she has every right to be shocked, because Byleth uses a tasteless joke he probably got from his father. Or perhaps Sylvain.
Byleth: “I’m here for a romantic rendezvous.”
Edelgard: “A rende...!? My teacher, do you even understand what that means!?”
The word Byleth uses is a little hard to directly translate into English. It’s “yobai,” and specifically refers to a man sneaking into a woman’s sleeping quarters with the intention to...cuddle with her. Google Translate uses the lovely euphemism “night crawling.”
In her next line, Edelgard dismisses your statement as nothing more than a tasteless joke, and I can’t help but think Byleth should thank his lucky stars that Hubert didn’t overhear this. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure he’d be dead.
And while this school seems pretty relaxed on the teachers’ relationships (I mean, look at Manuela, yikes), I can’t imagine anyone would be too happy with a teacher hitting on the 17/18-year-old imperial princess, in the middle of the night, in her dorm room, most likely in her nightgown/pajamas (despite what her character model shows), while she also happens to be their student. Even if it is just a joke. That kind of behavior is probably frowned upon. Probably. I sincerely hope so.
By the way, the above scene is the same regardless of Byleth’s gender.
Looking at this scene in German and Spanish, the bottom option is Byleth saying he couldn’t sleep. In German, Edelgard’s response is the same as it is in English, but in Spanish, she says you did not really answer her question.
Interesting that they changed that. I’m not sure you want to hear the real reason, Your Highness...
i hope you’re well! any plans to ever return to finishing translating? the ghostly gold translations sound interesting.
Sorry for the late response. ...I don't even know how long this message has been in here, so I'm very sorry! I've got two half-written posts about Three Houses to finish (started before I got Covid-19, so they've been waiting for about a year, whoah), but after that, a more in-depth post about the dialogue changes in Fates' Ghostly Gold seems like a great idea! I don't think that'll be too demanding on the brain.
Yep, there’s a glitch in the English version where, in the Mess Hall, one of Shigure’s voice clips is replaced with one of Kiragi’s, making him sound, erm…terribly intoxicated, maybe? xD

So glad the new FEH banner gave me a great summer weapon for my favorite unit. Ready to slap some people silly?!
(On another note, that fish must be VERY stiff, considering how straight it is. xD I don't wanna get slapped by that thing. Also, why can I not find a "fish slapping dance" tag?! It's a really short Monty Python skit that also happens to be one of my favorites.)

I thought 2020 was going to be a good year for writing, playing games, hanging out with people online, and doing other stuff that you can pretty much do at home. And it was, for a few months.
But in September 2020 I caught what turned out to be Covid-19. It was a little different than what I’d expected. (I never had a fever! The whole time! Since I got sick, I often have great difficulty speaking–has anyone else with Covid had that issue?? Where your vocal cords and lungs just tighten up while you try to talk and and you have to make a conscious effort to force air into and out of your lungs while you speak? Leading to really weird, labored breathing while speaking? I haven’t met anyone else with that problem and my doc hasn’t either, so I’ve been told it’s just me. It doesn’t always happen, which also baffles me. I’m really curious if there is anyone else out there with the same problem.) I still can’t taste or smell properly, either.
But the main reason I haven’t posted lately is because the brain fog, fatigue, headaches, and confusion can get really intense. It’s so bad that I’m refusing to play new games because I would probably have great difficulty learning new controls or following an unfamiliar storyline. I don’t have that issue with familiar games and I have tons of them, so I’ve been replaying a lot of simpler, familiar stuff. (Especially old HM/SoS games, yay. And RF4 Special Edition (English), which I finally got last month. And FE: Three Houses, which I got a few months before catching Covid and am utterly enthralled that the text language changes with the system language, so I did not have to buy separate English and Japanese versions, like I did with RF4. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!….but I I rarely play in Japanese right now. On PC, I’m having fun playing with Sim versions of video game characters. As usual. That’s a lot of fun, if you’re into The Sims. They can do such wonderfully random out-of-character things.)
So yeah. Anyway. I’d really like to encourage people to be supportive of any friends or family who caught Covid-19 and are dealing with after effects from it, because they can be really intense. My brother, who got it at the same time I did, told me last month that he too has fatigue, brain fog and frequent headaches, to the point that he has difficulty focusing on tasks at work or following the plot of games, TV shows or movies. But at least he’s skilled enough that his work allows him a fair degree leniency, and he still gets his tasks done. Other people haven’t been so lucky.
All guidebook interview translations, translation comparisons and other posts are on hold for the foreseeable future. If I can find or remember any really simple stuff I wanted to talk about, or simple observations I made, I may try to post. But nothing long or in-depth. (And to be honest, my brain is so fuzzy that the “list” I had stored there has pretty much vanished. Ugh.)
Translation Comparison: Soleil’s S Supports (Part III)
Soleil and Siegbert
Sorry for the long wait, but here it is! Finally! I’m glad this is written material and not a video because I caught a cold a couple of days ago and while the extra fatigue it brought is now gone, my cough isn’t and my voice sounds more crackly than a poorly tuned radio. It’s quite unpleasant, that’s for sure.
While I can’t promise that I can stick to any kind of schedule, I will try to fulfill requests for certain conversations as quickly as I can! So if you have any other particular conversations of Soleil’s you want to see, let me know. There are a few other support convos I want to draw attention to as well, since the English version of Fates made some significant cuts to the support conversations… And made some big changes to DLC dialogue. I’m still baffled by the changes they made in the characters’ dialogue on the “Ghostly Gold” map. I really should do a post about that someday. Hoshidan characters talking about bacon, eggs, and coffee seems rather odd and doesn’t match with their Japanese dialogue at all…
Anyway, back to the subject: this conversation! The English version of this can be found here. It’s the same up to the part where Siegbert says: “Very well… The truth is…I don’t want you for my retainer.” That’s replaced by the first line in the conversation below.
Siegbert: “……Actually…I want to chase girls.”
Soleil: “Hmm? Whaaaaaat!? Siegbert wants to chase girls!? …Ack! Is this my fault? I like to chase cute girls, so… Have I had some sort of weird impact on Siegbert!?”
Siegbert: “…Sorry. I may not have worded that very well. I don’t mean that I want to chase girls… It’s that I’ve fallen for a certain girl.”
Soleil: “Ah! So that’s it. You’ve got nothing to worry about! If you’ve fallen in love, it’s best to just tell her how you honestly feel!”
Siegbert: “……I love you.”
Soleil: “Ooh! That’s nice! That’s the spirit! But, if you can, I’m sure she’d love it if you sugared up your words a little!”
Siegbert: “……I love your sparkling smile.”
Soleil: “Yep, you’re gettin’ it!”
Siegbert: “My heart warms when I’m with you. If possible… I’d rather have you right here with me always, just as you are now.”
Soleil: “…Hm?”
Siegbert: “…Soleil. I love you.”
Soleil: “Mmm-hmm… Wait. You’re not… practicing, are you? That girl that you like…it’s me?”
Siegbert: “Yes.”
Soleil: “!! I’m so sorry, I had no idea…! I, I… Did I really tell you to use those sweet sappy words!? I wish I could fall into a hole…”
Siegbert: “…Calm down and listen, Soleil. There were no lies in my words. I want to protect your smile for the rest of my life. So, Soleil, will you walk through life together with me?”
Soleil: “B-but Siegbert… You’re my future lord…”
Siegbert: “Don’t say that anymore. I don’t want you by my side as a retainer. I want you to be my queen.”
Soleil: “……Are you sure you want me? You can’t return me. You won’t…regret it?”
(T/N: I also thought of using a phrase like: “No refunds, you know!”)
Siegbert: “There’s no way I would regret it. I won’t have anyone but you.”
Soleil: “I’m so happy… Siegbert… I’m going to become an wonderful person… Someone worthy of being by your side…”
Any plans to finish up Soleil’s S supports? I’m kinda curious how one with Siegbert would go down with how formal he is
Yes, I do! I just, haven’t been making translation activities a priority lately, so I have seriously neglected this blog and finishing off the festival translations. I really need to change that... I was actually considering doing Soleil and Siegbert’s next, because I find it interesting. And very sweet! So, how about this: I’ll give myself a deadline of 7 June to get that one up. (I also have had Ignatius/Felicia’s mother-son conversation next on my queue of festival translations, so I’ll get that one up by the 7th, too. It’s pretty simple and makes me crave shaved ice for some reason...)

YOOO!! Ever since I saw that support with Frederick (and honestly before, due to his insecurities of being seen as "feminine") I always thought Leo's disapproval towards Forrest came from his own interest in women's things that he could never fathom acting upon in public. And in waltzes Forrest all confidence and grace and the petty part of Leo and the part that believes princes have to act a certain way goes all haywire and he panics! And it makes him lash out! That's always been my HC anyways.
Yep yep, Leo’s conversation with Frederick strongly suggests that your headcanon may be the headcanon of some of the developers, too. (And I agree with it, as well.) If the team at Intelligent Systems allowed Koei to write that detail (about Leo’s robe) into the conversation makes it kinda...actually canon, I guess?
I guess the translation team probably changed it because they wanted to avoid more venomous arguments about gender issues...but left the (voiced) Japanese dialogue in the English version anyway, lol.
(Fire Emblem Warriors) Localization Change: Leo Wore What Now?
Now that I finally have a docking station for my Switch again and can preserve my poor precious eyesight by using it on a TV/monitor, I’ve been playing Warriors again so that the completionist inside me can finally completely complete the Switch version of the game. Completely.
And that reminded me: there’s a tiny but significant detail in Leo and Frederick’s support conversation that is different between the English and Japanese versions.
It’s here: (these screens aren’t exactly consecutive, but illustrate where the conversation is different)
Frederick: “The other morning, you nearly wore your nightcap into battle.”
Frederick: “I was quite surprised to see you look directly at the pillow several times...”
If you have the voice language set to Japanese, or if you’re playing the Japanese version of the game (which I have for 3DS), you’ll see that it’s not a nightcap or glancing at the pillow that Frederick is talking about.
Frederick: “The other morning, you were wearing nightclothes on top of your armor---”
Frederick: “What especially surprised me, and maybe you confused your own [nightclothes] with someone else’s, [but you were wearing] women’s---”
Yeah. Frederick spotted Leo wearing a woman’s night dress, nightgown, robe, whatever over his armor. Leo realized it and removed it before going far from his tent, but Frederick still saw it. Did it belong to Camilla, (female) Corrin or someone else is what I want to know... (I doubt Elise’s clothing would fit him, especially over his armor.)
Now I’m wondering if Leo’s initial disapproval of Forrest’s taste in clothing actually stems from a deep-seated desire to wear women’s clothing himself...
