So the thing to keep in mind about this, Japanese doesn't have plurals like English does. So this could be referring to multiple people or just one. Which is why they translated it like this

Don't get me wrong, "important person" is a LOADED phrase, but it's not any more or less loaded than "what matters".

i go to the store. i am nice to the person behind the counter. she looks up at the camera while she counts out my change. there is nothing fundamentally different about her and i.
