SWANFIRE APPRECIATION WEEK 2025
🦢🔥 Day 7: Free Day | Tarot He used to tell me that there are no coincidences. Everything that happens happens by design, and there's nothing we can do about it. Forces greater than us conspire to make it happen. Fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it, the point is, maybe we met for a reason. Maybe something good came from us being together.
Day 7: Free Day
Both Emma and Neal survived abandonment, betrayal, and years of emotional instability. However, they both had opposite responses to their trauma. Emma closed off, built walls, and learned to rely on no one whereas Neal opened up too easily, latched on, and tried to please everyone.
Their complementary flaws are detailed in the table below:
Because their flaws align perfectly, Emma and Neal had the potential to be catalysts for each other’s healing. They could have helped each other find emotional balance. Emma could have taught Neal more about boundaries and caution while Neal could have taught Emma more about trust and openness. Together, they were two broken people who could have helped each other grow if the story and timing had allowed it.
An Analysis of Season 3A's Love Triangle
In Season 3A, Hook is used to juxtapose Neal (just like their introductions in "Tallahassee") to make Neal look like the healthier, better option in the love triangle. Contrary to popular belief, the Captain Swan relationship in this half season is portrayed as toxic and unhealthy.
Hook’s romantic interest in Emma only goes beyond flirting after he learns Neal (Baelfire) is Henry’s father and Emma’s ex, a major red flag given Hook’s romantic history with Neal’s mother, Milah. On Neverland, Hook bonds with Emma over Neal’s supposed death, but this connection is built on lies: Hook falsely claims he and Neal were close friends while Neal was in Neverland. In reality, Hook faked the friendship to gain intelligence on how to kill his father, then betrayed Neal by selling him to the Lost Boys and abandoning him for centuries, something that Emma never learns about.
Hook and Emma first kiss was transactional, a reward for Hook saving Emma's father's life. After Emma thanks Hook, Hook challenges her, stating "That all your father's life is worth to you?". Emma is the one to kiss him but only after being practically dared to while in an emotionally vulnerable state. This is contrasted in a later episode by Neal convincing Rumple to save David's life for no cost or expectations from Emma.
Hook’s actions become even more toxic once Neal reunites with the group. After hearing Neal and Emma confess that they still love each other, he tells Neal about his and Emma’s “dalliance.” He does this purposely, knowing Neal’s hatred for lies (the reason Neal’s friendship with Hook ended badly before) and that the word “dalliance” implies more than just a kiss that Emma later downplays. Hook’s revelation was solely intended to hurt Neal emotionally.
In the next few episodes, Hook takes advantage of Neal's pain and tension around him by continuing to pursue Emma aggressively. Hook provokes Neal until Neal snaps, leading to the immature lighter fight, which casts Neal in a negative light and prompts Emma to reject him.
Afterwards, Neal apologizes to Emma for his immature actions. This is contrasted by Hook showing no remorse for his part of the lighter fight. Hook has no guilt since he did what he intended: made Neal look bad in Emma's eyes.
Overall, Hook’s relentless pursuit of Emma, despite her repeated rejections, is not romantic or positive but a sharp contrast to Neal’s approach of giving Emma space and autonomy. Neal respects Emma’s choices, letting her decide when and how to engage emotionally. Neal is the healthier and more emotionally mature option in the love triangle, which is why Emma gradually softens toward him during this season.
This interpretation is supported by the showrunners (A&E) and some cast members, including Jennifer Morrison who referred to Hook as "Emma’s night in Vegas.” Hook was intended to be a fun detour, not Emma's ultimate partner and endgame.
SWANFIRE APPRECIATION WEEK 2025
🦢🔥 Day 6: One scene Emma: (She walks back over to Neal. Henry is not at the table.) How did it go? Neal: Went good. He said yes. Emma: Seriously? Neal: Yeah, he's in the bathroom right now. I'm just gonna go home and pack. Not bad for day three as a dad if I do say so myself. Emma: Wait, where's his backpack? Neal: I don't know, he took it with him. Emma: To the bathroom? Did you really fall for that? He's your son. Neal: (with realization) He's running.

Day 6: One Scene
The conversation starts with Henry, the one person who binds Emma and Neal together. The mutual concern for Henry melts the tension, setting a foundation of trust and emotional alignment.
When the conversation drifts towards Walsh, Emma's tone softens with guilt, and she apologizes to Neal for having someone serious. She is concerned with how her actions affect Neal emotionally, displaying how deeply she still cares about him.
Neal quickly assuages her guilt and validates her feelings, reassuring her that she has nothing to be sorry for. Her emotional wellbeing matters to him more than any claim he has to her heart.
They then bond over their trauma, laughing over the ridiculousness that is their romantic lives. The shared pain brings them closer, and they’re no longer guarded. In fact, this is the most emotionally relaxed Emma has been in the entire series.
Afterwards, Neal apologizes for Emma's loss, again showing how much he still cares about her. He tells her that he wants her to be happy, even if it isn't with him, demonstrating true, unconditional love.
The conversation ends with Emma replying that they were happy once, acknowledging the truth of their past and not just the pain. It isn’t just nostalgia but forgiveness and an opening for a second chance.
In this moment, they are more than the roles destiny forced upon them; they're not the Savior and the Lost Boy. They’re just Emma and Neal, the girl who ran from the system and the boy who got left behind, and for once, that’s enough.
I think my biggest red flag is that I don’t hate Neal.
I know it’s controversial because he was older than Emma who was still a minor. But hear me out.
I just think he had no concept of age whatsoever. He lived at least a 100/200 years as a kid, going from EF to real world for just a bit then stuck in neverland as a kid. He was basically more than 100yo dude stuck in a 13 yo body when he escaped neverland for real world. Then he grew up and was around 23/24 I think when he got with Emma ? But to him it’s nothing, he didn’t have a concept of age and coming from the EF where it’s normal for old men to marry teenagers, he didn’t know it was wrong. (Look at Regina forced to marry the king for instance). And yes he did very much love Emma it was real love, and what he did was stupid and horrible and I do not forgive him for that but I just don’t hate him because he was older.
Also they did a bad job (and they knew of course) to portray young Emma/Neal with Jen/Michael actors. Same with Regina/Lana.
The only thing that implies Neal was in his 20s is a piece of paper that isn't focused on or read aloud that gives MRJs birth year 1977. Another piece of paper uses JMOs birth year of 1979. (17 in '96) So if props matter Emma would've been 22 in 2001 when Tallahassee happened and we know that isn't true.
Records show that when she was merely a girl of seventeen, Emma Swan found herself, ironically, on the wrong side of the law. She was visiting friends of her foster parents in the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, it would prove to be a trip that would earn her a juvenile criminal record.
On the evening of June 16th, 1996, Swan—
On top of that JMO thought Emma was 18 and Adam told people their "math was off" when confronted with this.

SWANFIRE APPRECIATION WEEK 2025
🦢🔥 Day 4: Enchanted Forest AU Once upon a time, the Dark One, Rumpelstiltskin, kept his son locked away in a cabin deep in the woods, hidden with powerful magic. He only wanted to keep him safe, but the boy was trapped and lonely. Yet fate had other plans. Emma, the kingdom’s bold and spoiled princess, stumbled upon the boy, for the daughter of True Love cannot be turned away by enchantments. Though Baelfire’s heart was quickly drawn to hers, fear of his father’s rage kept him distant. Still, friendship blossomed. Emma quickly learned that her new friend was a prisoner, and she promised herself to help him. No matter how many times Rumpelstiltskin moved the cabin, Emma always found her way back to Baelfire. Their bond was too strong to be broken. At last, the Dark One understood: his son’s happiness was worth more than power. So he set Baelfire free, and the boy left to live with the love that had always been his destiny.
