WotC is currently developing the live-action game Warlock. Gameplay is expected to be revealed sometime this summer (2026).
The game is expected to be released in 2027
Out of curiosity, I started deciphering the background image on the official website and found a few things.
The poster uses Iokharic script, which is also known as Draconic.
This screenshot is from MMORPG Neverwinter (2013)
Draconic vocabulary was presented in the Races of the Dragon, p. 147

Hey, Darlings. I've compiled my essential videos for you, which answer absolutely all your questions about Ascended Astarion. Feel free to repost them for future viewing if you haven't already. â¤ď¸
1 - First and foremost, Astarion is not Cazador 2.0. You can see why in this video:
This is why Ascended Astarion IS NOT like Cazador | Baldur's Gate 3
2 - Secondly, and very importantly: Ascended Astarion treats his consort as an equal, constantly referring to "WE" and "OUR", and wants to give her the entire world. This is demonstrated in this video:
Ascended Astarion Sees Tav as His Equal - Here's Why | Baldur's Gate 3
3 - The most important thing is to understand who his consort really is. And in fact, his consort is the vampire bride/groom, which is clearly an Easter egg in the game, referencing the vampire bride of Revenloft:
Pt. 1 Astarion Made Me His Vampire Bride (Based on D&D Lore) | Baldur's Gate 3
Pt. 2 Ascended Astarion's BRIDE Is Not Just a Theory - Confirmed FACTS! BG3
4 - He definitely doesn't lose his soul during the ritual. Firstly, there's no mention in official D&D sources of vampires being soulless, and secondly:
5 - Incidentally, his heart is beating again, because he's a completely new kind of vampire â a living vampire. Certainly not just a normal, full-fledged vampire like Cazador:
When Astarion's Heart Beats Again | Baldur's Gate 3
6 - By the way, his kisses used to be sweet and tender, and what we see now only appeared after patch 6. Personally, I think these kisses are inappropriate, and Larian wanted to play with BDSM, but they clearly didn't succeed. Not all of us are on board, and I personally would like to have access to the kisses from Patch 5. I'm using the kisses from Moxi's wonderful mod, and I recommend you do the same if you roleplay love with him.
ALL Ascended Astarion Kisses from EVERY Patch in Baldur's Gate 3
7 - If you still have questions about the fact that Ascended Astarion doesn't actually repeat the "cycle of abuse" and that it's all just a hoax made up by haters, here's a video:
Ascended Astarion Breaks the Cycle and Here's Why | Baldur's Gate 3
8 - The haters' favorite part is about the breakup. Haters love to show him yelling at Tav. But they usually cut clips out of context. Good for you if you've already figured this outâhere's your treat đŹ . Honestly, I'd be as upset as Ascended Astarion. And here is his full breakup with context:
Ascended Astarion Is Hurt After I Denied His Proposal | Baldur's Gate 3
9 - If you still have questions after watching all the videos above, you might really enjoy debunking the myths about Ascended Astarion:
In any case, I hope you enjoyed all the videos and that it will help you understand Ascended Astarion better. It's not all videos so welcome to my channel â¤ď¸đ
Are you excited about the newly announced Astarion novel/prequel?
Yes, thanks for asking! I really liked the book cover at first glance:
A book with a cover like that is definitely one I want to display face-out on the main shelf.
"Astarion Ancunin was supposed to be a magistrate, not a vampire spawnâŚâ â a line from the bookâs synopsis. The novel will explore Astarionâs past, the most difficult years of his life, when the elven nobleman and magistrate was enslaved by the sadistic bastard Cazador. It seems to me that the cover contains a certain reference to what he desired even back when he was a magistrate (âa taste for power and a hunger for eternal lifeâ Š artbook). Iâm sure that if you send this artwork:
To anyone who isn't aware that the novel has been released or doesn't know what the cover looks like, they would be convinced that what they're looking at is artwork featuring the Ascended Astarion.
All in all, major props for the cover.
Book description:
Bring the magical and dangerous world of Baldurâs Gate 3 to life with officially licensed books and products!
âBaldur's Gate 3: Astarion
by T. Kingfisher, narrated by Neil Newbon
The roguish charlatan Astarion will free himself from a centuries-long fate of servitude or die (a second time) tryingâin this decadently dark fantasy adventure by award-winning author T. Kingfisher.
Youâre too pretty to die.
Astarion Ancunin was supposed to be a magistrate, not a vampire spawn. He was supposed to serve the law, not the vicious vampire lord Cazador Szarr. And he was supposed to drink fine wine, not rat blood. Alasâthe city of Baldurâs Gate cares little for whatâs supposed to happen.
Though he has been powerless to resist his masterâs bidding, haunting the nighttime streets to fetch warm blood, Astarion has never surrendered his hope. One day, this nightmare must end. He just has to find out how.
When the vampire lord announces a twisted competition for his favor, an opportunity presents itself in the form of a rare prize . . . and an unlikely alliance. The blood of a dead god is buried deep beneath Baldurâs Gate, and, to get it, Astarion will need the help of a handsome Aasimar paladin named Hahn den Suriel.
There are just a few problems. Astarion is not supposed to trust his fellow spawn. Heâs not supposed to go out into the city for his own ends rather than the vampire lordâs. And heâs certainly not supposed to strike a deal with a stranger whose golden eyes can snare even a blackened, undead heart.
But the city of Baldurâs Gate cares little for whatâs supposed to happen.â
Yes, Neil will be narrating the audiobook! Thatâs also great news and a huge plus for the upcoming book.
Set within the years that Astarion served under the vampire lord Cazador Szarr.
And Stephen Rooney participated as a consultant, which gives reason to hope that the book will preserve Astarionâs character, his personality, and the gameâs lore:
âBaldur's Gate 3: Astarion is aiming for authenticity. Stephen Rooney, one of the senior writers behind the game itself, consulted on the novel to ensure it aligns with established lore, and that the Astarion millions of players have fallen in love with continues to be the same lovable, silver-tongued rogue. The audiobook will also be narrated by Neil Newbon, the original acclaimed voice and performance capture actor for Astarion, bringing a level of continuity that fans are rarely awarded when it comes to video games.â
Quote from the article âBaldur's Gate 3's Best Character Is Officially Getting His Own Prequelâ
As HBO works on bringing Baldur's Gate to life, a new series of spin-off books have been announced, including an Astarion prequel.
âThe story was developed in close collaboration with Stephen Rooney, senior writer at Larian Studios and the original creator of Astarion.â
Quote from the article: âOfficial Baldurâs Gate 3 prequel novel about Astarion announcedâ
Publisher Random House Worlds, together with Wizards of the Coast, has announced an expansion of the Baldur's Gate 3 universe through a new
Unfortunately, however, itâs worth noting that consultations arenât the same as shaping the plot from the very beginning. Therefore, it would be somewhat naive to suggest that the Astarion in this book will be an exact replica of the Astarion we saw in the game.
The author of the novel about Astarion is T. Kingfisher (the pen name of Ursula Vernon)âan acclaimed author and winner of numerous Hugo and Nebula Awards who writes in the fantasy and horror genres. The novel âBaldur's Gate 3: Astarionâ is scheduled for release on September 29. To be honest, I understand the concerns of many fans; Iâve read a lot of comments and opinions about the upcoming book. There are both opinions from people who are absolutely excited (especially fans of T. Kingfisherâs work) and opinions from people who fear that this will be yet another fanfic, only this time canonized. Personally, unfortunately, I've not yet had a look at T. Kingfisher's work, but I'll definitely try to do so as soon as possible so I have at least some idea of what to expect. Of course, the considerable number of enthusiastic comments online from people who love T. Kingfisherâmany of whom call her their favorite author and the best fantasy writer possibleâalong with the general information about the author and the list of her literary awards, suggests that she is a talented writer.
âHer prose is compulsively readable and atmospheric and her characters feel grounded in their worlds. A lot of her works tie into different kinds of trauma and feeling trapped or chained to something/some place in some capacity or other, be it physically or just psychologically, and I think she's well equipped to tell Astarion's prequel story in a way that feels authentic & respectful to the character.â Š comment from Reddit
Although not everyone shares this enthusiasm, there are those who have expressed concerns.
âIâm not really looking to read someone elseâs fanfic either. And while I donât want to jump to conclusions about something that isnât even out yet, Iâve got my doubts, and my friends do too.â
âpersonally i feel bored with the idea of a astarion book because it sounds like ill just be abuse...i mean his past sucks, the only thing that could interest me to read it is his relationship w/ his siblingsâ
âHad Stephen Rooney actually written this book, I would have definitely welcomed it and wanted to read it. However, now it seems more like fan fiction based on the game.â - Examples of comments from other platforms.
âEu sĂł nĂŁo aguentaria ler um livro dele sofrendo do inĂcio ao fim mesmo... meu coração nĂŁo aguentariaâ
(Translation: âI just couldnât bear to read a book where he suffers from beginning to end... my heart couldnât take it.â) â and this comment⌠*sighs. It completely resonates with my own feelings on the matter. Same here⌠Iâll definitely read it, of course, but I hope youâll understand why Iâm not 100% âexcited.â For me personally, itâll be emotionally difficult, and Iâm already preparing myself for that. Of course, any information about Astarion is very valuable to me, but itâs a complicated feelingâI want to read about him, I understand that his past was terribly painful. Itâs just that I havenât bought books before knowing that reading them would make me feel badâthis will be my first experience like this. Iâve never had a reading experience like this before. Thereâs a difference between reading a difficult bookâeven if itâs a heavy readâwhen you start âfrom scratch,â getting to know the characters as you go along; of course, you can grow attached to them, start worrying about them, and so on. But itâs a completely different matter â when your loved one, your sunshine, and⌠Well, you understand what happened to Astarion during those terrible years of slavery.
As for the âcanonical statusâ of what will be described in the bookâI donât want to âlook at things through rose-colored glassesâ or get all melancholy and criticize a book that hasnât even been published yet. When the book comes out, Iâll read it and form an honest opinion based on what Iâve read.
In magazine articles promoting the upcoming book, we are warned that the events described in the book will be heart-wrenching.
âUnfortunately, if youâve spent a significant amount of time with Astarion in the game (which I know you have), this is a period in his life filled with trauma, so get your tissues readyâespecially since a familiar voice will be returning.â â a quote from the article âBaldurâs Gate 3âs Best Character Is Officially Getting His Own Prequel,â which I mentioned above. Kingfisher also warned future readers that the story will be heavy and end on a very somber note.
âOver on Bluesky, Kingfisher writes, "FOR THE RECORD â this character has a super f***** up abusive backstory. We handle it well, I think, but CONTENT WARNINGS. The book is DARK. Also, it's a prequel, so it ends in a really dark place."
Source of the quote:
Fantasy author T. Kingfisher is the writer behind it.
Another quote from Kingfisher:
"The problem here is that if you play BG3, this book is 'wow, itâs the tragic backstory!' If you donât play it, the book is 'wtf, why did Kingfisher write a book about this vampire being tormented that has such a downer ending?!?'"
Source:
Wildly prolific fantasy and horror author T. Kingfisher just got announced as the writer of an Astarion backstory novel coming this year.
The same article also notes that Kingfisher herself has romanticized Astarion basically since the game's launch.
By the way, as I reread the blurb for the novel, I see what I think is a pretty strong connection to the art book:
âAstarion Ancunin was supposed to be a magistrate, not a vampire spawn.
He just has to find out how.â
Artbook: âTwo hundred years ago, Astarion was a corrupt elite of Baldurâs Gate with a taste for power and a hunger for eternal life. It wasnât long before these desires became a nightmarish reality. Transformed into the vampire spawn of a sadistic master, Astarion was kept as a slave to lure fresh noble blood to the palace of Cazador â all while subsisting on the putrid blood of rats.â
The synopsis also mentions âa handsome Aasimar paladin named Hahn den Suriel,â with whom Astarion may have a tragic romance. âItâs definitely gonna end with that paladin dying đ,â wrote one commenter, while others replied: âI understood that reference,â and âOf course it will.â T. Kingfisher has a fantasy romance saga about paladins (The Saint of Steel Series); I suppose thatâs what readers were referring to. I donât know, itâs just a guess, and besidesâthis story will be a prequel. Many people (there are a lot of comments on this) donât want to see Astarion in a romance with any character, since his relationship with Tav was supposed to be his first serious and meaningful real relationship. âLove? I donât remember love,â Astarion himself tells us in the game. And Tav was the first person to voluntarily share their blood with him ( âYou were my firstâ). If the love between Astarion and Hahn den Suriel is shown, it will directly violate the BG3 lore. The ideal scenario, which would fit perfectly into the gameâs lore, in my opinion, of course, would be one in which Hahn den Suriel turns out to be that very âdarling boyâ whom Astarion was unable to bring to Cazador.
âYou don't know what it was like. There was no way out.
Once - in the first decade of my slavery - I found a darling boy who I couldn't bear to bring back to him. So I ran, instead of hurting that sweet man.
After Cazador caught me, the bastard sealed me, starving, inside a dusty tomb, all on my own, for an entire year.
A year of silence. Months of scratching my hands raw, trying to carve my way out. More months of not moving at all. Months wishing only for death.
So don't you ever judge me for doing what Cazador ordered.â Š Astarion
âA darling boy,â whose name is not mentioned in the game, is the only character in the game whom Astarion recalls when talking about his past as a slave to Cazador. Astarion does not mention anyone else (he only remembers Sebastian when he sees him in the cells).
And the timeline aligns with the description we see in the bookâs blurbââin the first decade of my slavery.â
In my opinion, the synopsis of the novel alludes specifically to this period. This is, of course, just a guess; it remains to be seen how T. Kingfisher will choose to present this story about the paladin.
Personally, I think a serious, in-depth romance would disrupt the lore of the original game, although a scenario in which Hahn den Suriel turns out to be the âdarling boyâ would fit perfectly into the canon and could work well.
Personally, Iâm bothered by the fact that, as Iâve been told, the author on Bluesky mentioned that the book contains âdefinitely some fuckinâ,â because âHe also says he has had sex any number of times while in Cazadorâs service.â I understand that Larian included sexual abuse in Astarion's past in the canon, even though it's completely illogical and not in the spirit of D&Dâa vampire doesn't need to sleep with their victims to drag them to their lair (okay, it can be explained by the depravity of that perverted bastard Cazador). But I really wouldnât want this to be exploited.
The way it was presented in BG3 itselfâthrough mentions and lines of dialogueâis more than enough for the player to grasp and understand everything. Itâs really hard if you have to read in detail about the abuse of Astarion, especially in the form of âsome fuckinâ.â
After reading the comments from the fandom, I realized Iâm not alone in my antipathy toward this future âfuckinâ and want to quote those people whose words really hit the nail on the head for me and reflect the same feelings I have about this:
âIâd rather see a book about Astarionâs life before Cazador. The âfuckinâ in the upcoming book just makes it seem like (at least to me) itâs downplaying the trauma he went through with intimacy under Cazador.â â Thatâs exactly how I interpret that word, too. Maybe itâs a mistaken emotional personal perception, maybe itâs because I myself used the word âfuckinâ in my own posts precisely to downplay things, even unconsciously⌠In my case, it expressed my own disgust toward âfuckinâ with Halsin, Mizora, Haarlep, and in the brothel, when I had to do that shit for the sake of testing polyamory in the game, to analyze Astarionâs reactions to it. And I wanted to call it not âsex,â but specifically âfuckinâ. I would never have wanted to call Tavâs intimate scene with Astarion himself that. And so, for me, there was a certain attitude behind that word. Of course, this may be subjective, and linguistic nuances for speakers of different languages may also play a role, but as Iâve seen, some other fans share the same opinion.
âHis 'fucking' was not consensual so im not really sure why we'd wanna see that anyway.... pretty sure he also stated he doesn't even remember most of them. "Didn't even grant me a moment of temporary bliss".
âI mean, unless we're talking pre-turning, any spicy scenes are 100% non-con. I'm not sure if it would be worse for them to be titillating or horrifying, but I don't like the idea of reading either. Also, I have no idea how one could write anything approaching a satisfying story arc that ends pre-canon. I can't really imagine it being anything other than misery porn or wildly OOC.â
As for the fandom controversy over which gender Astarionâs partner is most often depicted as in official content, ladies and gentlemen, Astarion is pansexual, and all fans have a voice and can express their desire to be represented! This is no reason to be hostile toward one another. Weâre all in this together, after all. For example, Iâm a heterosexual woman, and just while browsing comments online, I immediately came across a comment from a gay man with whom we share a nearly identical experience of being part of the fandom:
âMost of those who dislike Astarion are either straight men who resent that he is more popular with women than they themselves are, or female Karen type of players who want to police the gaming style of others and force them to make the choices that the game developers labelled as "good", rather than the choices that a given player prefers.
Male players plainly expressing a preference for letting Astarion ascend (to let him have a better future, with more agency, more power and far more comfort, and a future not involving an angry Mephistopheles who had been screwed out of 7k easy souls), got every bit as much hostility as female players. At least that's my experience as a male player. My haters were mostly of the Karen meddling type.â  â My haters too, bro, the same here. Iâm giving you a mental high-five. So why the hell do we need to please these Karens? Who else but them would actually enjoy fandom controversies about Astarionâs sexual orientation?
But female playersâ desire to see Astarion with a woman in official content isnât homophobia. Itâs simply a desire to see the other side represented as well. Iâve seen many comments from women who were mocked for their gender by haters who justified it by saying that âAstarion is gay,â even though Astarion is pansexual.
âKingfisherâs âWhat Moves the Deadâ was one of the worst books Iâve ever read, so I was extremely disappointed that she was the one, and not Stephen Rooney, to write Astarionâs story. And doubly so that it was a romance with a male character. It was already hard to defend Astarionâs pansexuality, and now the male fanbase will have more ammunition to mock the female fans with âSee? Heâs officially gay now. Why do you pair him with a woman?â
People have a right to their own opinions about content that affects them and their emotional stateâand perhaps even contributes to the growing number of idiots we have to tell to get lost every time, wasting our own time and resources in the process. The BG3 fandom is toxic in and of itself; I donât know, maybe there are worse onesâI personally havenât seen anyâbut at the very least, the local âgoodâ is definitely the shittiest âgoodâ of all the existing representations of âgoodâ in the RPGs Iâm familiar with. Maybe we shouldnât add another dose of âtoxicityâ?
âI was literally so devastated by it that I fell into a really sick, depressed state where I would vomit when I woke up and have been feeling very nauseous all weekâall because Iâm autistic, have a major anxiety and depression disorder, and love a fictional man to death đđ And I would have cried if theyâd said he never loved womenâŚ. đâ â Itâs so sad that the fandom always forgets about basic humanity and empathy, and that there are sensitive and vulnerable people out there. I dream that people, at least within one truly common fandomâthe AA fandomâwould interact with each other normally and humanely, regardless of what some specific author comes up with and whether Wizards of the Coast âcanonizesâ it.
Yes, of course, any information about Astarion is precious, the main thing is that this novel doesn't end up being someone else's OC. The story behind the writing of Astarion is quite complicated and controversialâit all started out wonderfully and magnificently in EA, then came Welch and screwed up his romance with their âvision,â then they made a total pile of crap in Patch 6, then at least the Tav"s faces were fixed and brought back to normal, but console players still couldnât play the game without forced D/s, since Larian didnât bother to properly optimize mod support⌠I hope that fans of T. Kingfisher, who are excited about the upcoming book, wonât be offended and will understand why many others are wary of anyoneâs new take on the story of Astarion, and the fact that it might become canonized fanfiction. Once the book is out, weâll be able to judge how it turned out; I hope everything will be fine.
But the bookâs cover is optimistic, which really pleased meâit hints at a happy ending, when Astarion gets everything he wanted. And heâll celebrate it.
âAnd he was supposed to drink fine wineâŚâ And he will. Forever.

The âPower Corruptsâ trope and its quasi-religious significance. The application of this trope to Astarion's storyline.
Many Christian thinkers have spoken of the sinful nature of humanity, for whom power is a temptation (much like how haters of Ascension argue that Astarion must not be given the chance to gain power, as it will inevitably âcorruptâ him). Iâve read comments from people who saw this as Christian propaganda, and I canât help but agree with how spot-on that is, given the popularity of this trope in monotheistic religions (especially Christianity). Disclaimer: I am an atheist myself, but I respect all religions, and my goal is to analyze this specific trope, not to discuss religion as such. If you are Christian and this might offend you, please ignore this.
So, the religious significance of this trope is the preservation of âdivineâ authority. This trope has a distinctly conservative and protectionist undertone.
All authority comes from God. This postulate is fundamental. If authority is granted by God, then to rebel against it is a sin, an encroachment upon the divine plan. To attempt to seize this authority constitutes a grave spiritual fall, for pride (superbia) is the mother of all sins. In a class-based society (medieval Europe), this thesis developed into a coherent conservative doctrine. Virtue â humility (humilitas)âstands against sin. Humility is the primary virtue for the lower classes. The desire to rise above oneâs station, to gain power and wealth, is a manifestation of rebellious pride, which brought about Luciferâs downfall.
Taking BG3 as an example, itâs interesting to note how the âgoodâ goddess Mystra manipulates Gale in Act 2 by sending Elminster to convince him to blow himself up and, in the process, wipe us all out, yet the ambitions of this âgoodâ deity, having attained âsupreme power,â are in no way condemned; on the contrary, it is considered a âgoodâ ending when Gale, despite all her actions, hands over that powerâthe Crown of Karsusâto her, remaining humility. If Gale takes the Crown for himself, weâll see the consequences of this actâa cat scolds him at the party. Because taking power for oneself is a bad deed. Tara, of course, is very sweet, and itâs funny, but in Astarionâs case, seizing power triggers far more dramatic meltdowns. Nevertheless, the existing gods - whatever they do - are right, and encroaching on their power will âcorrupt the soul.â And a pact with the devil must threaten hellish torments (which is not at all mandatory in D&D lore; you can negotiate with devils and benefit from it if you know how to read the contract). By the way, people sometimes compared the relationship between Astarion and his consort to that of Gale and Mystra, saying that the âimbalance of powerâ makes the relationship âso unhealthy.â Although that is simply Mystraâs personality â a personality does not change upon gaining power; rather, the individual simply has the freedom to express themselves fully, does as they please, and has no need to adapt to circumstances more powerful than themselves. Mystra left Kelemvor, with whom she had been in love even before they both attained divinity, and they continued their relationship after becoming gods. But when problems arose in their relationship (due to Kelemvorâs âwork,â as he decided to live up to his new role as the impartial Judge of the Dead and refused Mystra a request that was very important to her), Mystra sent her âequal partnerâ packing. Cyric drinking down Mystraâs and Kelemvorâs tears at the end of the book Prince of Lies. And itâs no surprise that Mystra abandoned Gale when he disobeyed her. The only difference is that Kelemvor shed a tear once and remained seated on his throne as Judge of the Dead, while Gale found himself alone in a dire situation, with a bomb in his chest. Mystra is simply that kind of personâshe abandons her lovers if they do something not the way she would like, thatâs all. Divinity merely grants her status and greater freedom of choice, but it is unlikely that Mystra would have behaved any differently had she been mortal. Astarion is not that kind of person; he is capable of the deepest love and devotion to his one and only chosen one.
âI really hoped we could avoid being pawns for a dark god, but here we are, I suppose.
I'm with you, my dear. Wherever this leads.â - Astarion is loyal to DU, who accepted Bhaal. He will stand by his beloved, no matter where it leads.
Itâs impossible to imagine Astarion abandoning his consort to their fate, just as Mystra abandoned Gale, if the consort had suddenly messed something up with some forbidden magic. Ascended Astarion would simply do everything in his power and use his abilities to protect them and rectify the situation. âMy pretty consort, I donât like to see doubt cast upon your face. Fear not: you are mine.â He would surely have said that if he were in Mystraâs place in such a situation.
From a religious perspective, earthly power is a cross to bear and a trial that God sends to the chosen ones. And if you try to seize power, you will commit the sins of pride and rebellion.
In art, the trope âpower corruptsâ has long been a tired, overused clichĂŠ (and has been used countless times). This trope ignores context, simplifies any realistic and complex psychological motivations, and reduces everything to a single primitive formula: âpower = evil, and therefore, anyone who seeks it is either a scoundrel or will become one.â In popular culture, this trope is the cheapest way to portray a characterâs âtragedy.â And the story of Ascended Astarion is often called a tragedy, even though there is nothing tragic in the plot itself, except for the necessity of making sacrifices in the ritual. A primitive analysis of the AA plot is a classic example of how the ideological clichĂŠ âpower corruptsâ is used in its quasi-religious version. Haters of this path do not analyze the characterâthey judge him (and the players) by a predetermined, simplified moral scale, where any power is evil, and any deviation from the âhealthyâ (read: their own) norm is a moral fall deserving of condemnation. And, what particularly strikes me, they sometimes claim that gaining power, opportunities, a living body, and a full life âharms Astarion,â as if they were âprotectingâ him from something bad. At the same time, for a person who is not an âadeptâ of any kind of âgood,â it is obvious that Astarion needs to be protected from foreign power, from âdivine power,â from the power of those who want him to âsubmitâ and âaccept his darkness.â To protect him by any means from THIS:
And the path of humility, humiliation, and suffering, in my view, may seem the only correct one only to those who think in a quasi-religious vein from the outset. That is, for those who are already, a priori, âadeptsâ of a certain âgood,â the most important thing will be for Astarion to fit into their worldview, to align with their âteachings.â But when you have not sworn allegiance to any gods, yet stand before a choiceâto serve those who demand suffering without giving anything in return, as if being âgoodâ within their value system is in itself something of paramount importance. On the other handâthe sole bearer of âdivine powerâ (yes, devils are also creations of Aoâthe supreme deity, the creator of the world, who, unlike God in the religious concepts of our world, is True Neutral)âwho can offer something truly valuable and strike a favorable deal. Mephistopheles is the sole bearer of supreme powers capable of bringing Astarion and me real benefit. And he offers a huge reward, without expecting that serving his goals should evoke religious ecstasy merely from the possibility itself, unlike the âgoodâ gods. It makes sense to strike a deal with someone who offers what you need. Of course, âyou canât trust the devil.â Well, you shouldnât trust them, you should double-check by reading the contract carefully.
And if we set aside religious arguments, the world simply cannot exist without power. Without power, only active anarchy is possible, and even then, people will band together into gangs, leaders will emerge within those gangs, and active anarchy inevitably gives way to passive anarchy, as large communities form, within which their own power hierarchies take shape. And, of course, in reality, all those in power are corrupt. Corruption has always been an integral part of society; the only question is whether it remains within reasonable limits or goes beyond them. Someone will always be in power; thereâs no other wayâno other mechanisms for societyâs existence have been invented, not even in magical worlds. So why the hell does power ânot corruptâ Mystra, but itâs forbidden for Astarion? Why must he be the humble victim of the authorities? After the Ascension, Astarion gains power (freedom, strength, opportunities), but first and foremost he gains opportunities, and in the âgoodâ ending for the leader of the spawns, he gains power (over the fates of the other spawns). As the leader of the spawns, Astarion is forced to impale the disobedient ( âIf I get back and theyâve killed another gnome, I swearâsomeoneâs getting impaled.â); he must become a cruel leader and keep them in fear, or else they will tear him apart. âAnd if they do step out of line, it just takes one or two brutal examples to remind everyone else of their place.â âI'm not a tyrant, I do care for their well-being, I just can't afford to show weakness.â â why not tie in a âcycle of abuseâ style primitive here as well? UA â the leader of the spawns does things reminiscent of Vellioth â impaling the disobedient, but, truth be told, many have done that; clearly, Vellioth didnât originate the idea. And the Lord has a real palace â his victorâs trophy â while the leader of the spawns has ruins upon which he can build it.
The desire for powerâand for the opportunities it bringsâis simply part of human nature; itâs evolutionary, and itâs true in the animal world as well. Power offers, first and foremost, opportunities and freedom from consequences. In the case of a sudden social upheaval and the outbreak of violent anarchy in the streets, the carnage would be too horrific to imagine. Afterwards, the survivors will organize into armed groups, and local authorities will emerge. âPower is evilâ is, first and foremost, a defensive clichĂŠ that benefits those already in power by preventing the rise of competitors, and there are countless similar âmoral talesâ on this subject throughout history.
Many individuals in FaerĂťn hold power, and all these sayings about âpower corruptsâ apply perfectly to them as well. And they have no intention of showing empathy toward Astarion, who is a vampire. It is better to hold power yourself than to become a victim of those in power (even the city authorities can harm a vampire). There are no laws that could protect him. Therefore, protecting a loved one means helping them gain the means to defend themselves, so they have decent weapons and protection against those who already hold power.
Ascended Astarion answers the question: "What are you going to do now? Rule the whole world?" - "Any fool can take the throne. I don't need it."
âPower is just a tool, it's people that are good or evil.â â with this brilliant line, Astarion himself debunks the simplistic clichĂŠ that âpower corrupts.â
After the Ascension, Astarion remains himself. His approvals do not become more âevil,â his in-game actions do not change, and there are no scenes in which he does anything that would contradict his core self. But if we look at this through the lens of religious thinking, imagining âgoodâ in the game as a kind of religion, then the mindset of its âfollowersâ shifts toward the dogmatic, and they truly need this mantra: âPower Corrupts.â
Just for fun, letâs imagine âgoodâ not as part of the existing balance of power in FaerĂťn, but as a kind of general quasi-religionâjust as a thought experiment. I wonder how this would manifest itself and how it would differ from a secular, rational approach.
In religious thought, âgoodâ is understood as a dogma, as adherence to certain rules. The secular approach holds that âgoodâ is different for everyone; âgoodâ is whatever makes your life better. âIt is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heavenâ vs. âIt is better to be rich and healthy than poor and sick.â
For a believer, adherence to doctrine is paramount; indeed, a believer cannot romanticize someone whom their faith declares to be âevil.â For them, the most important thing is to âshow the lightâ to sinners and convert them to their faith. For a non-believer, the well-being of those they love is the most important thing. If there is a need to âchoose a side,â a free-thinking person will choose the side that offers more advantages or saves them from misfortune, basing their choice on the well-being of their own loved ones. For a believer, the ârightâ choice is more important; for an atheistâthe real result.
Attitude toward facts: In any religion, facts are made to fit the dogma. They are either distorted, or certain images and symbols are invented to replace those facts. For an atheist, facts are the only thing that has real significance. For a religious person, the words of the âcanonical priestsâ are paramount; for an atheist, it is empirical experience (observing consequences and analyzing context). For a believer, the greatest sin is apostasy. For an atheist, âsinâ is simply a verbal construct invented by believers. For a dogmatist, moral judgment is made a priori, based on belonging to the âcamp of good.â A rationalist always evaluates a specific situation with all its nuances.
Ignoring reality in the name of faith. A dogmatist will insist that Astarion is âunhappyâ in Ascension, that it is a âtragic endingâ for him, even if Astarion himself said the opposite a hundred times in the game. Facts from the game (dialogues, descriptions, character behavior) are dismissed if they contradict the dogma that âpower corrupts.â Even the most fundamental thingsâreal things that are a priori more important than any pompous âblah-blah-blah,â such as hunger, the sun, the chance to feel alive again, a beating heart, the ability to savor the taste of food and wine, seeing his own reflection in a mirrorâwill be devalued in the name of dogma.
For a quasi-religious approach, maintaining âpurityâ is always more important than achieving well-being. And⌠this logicâto remain a spawn and give inâdoes not correlate at all with healing trauma. However, it correlates perfectly with the religious concept of humility. Healing occurs when a person fulfills and resolves a need, and Astarion has a need for safety, a need to regain a full life, and a need for power as well.

Final romantic scenes of companions in Baldurâs Gate 3
Karlach Date, God Gale Ascension, Astarion Vampire Lord, Astarion Vampire Spawn, Laezel Sunrise, Shadowheart SelĂťne Path, Shadowheart Shar Path, Wyll Proposal, Halsin (you'll never guess which scene)
(Minthara does not have a cinematic romance scene in Act 3, but she has our hearts, which she wins over again and again. She also has an excellent scene in Act 1)
To make it easier to follow, I recommend turning on the scene with dialogue.
I learned about this thanks to RomeoandNutella, when she shared a wonderful script of the Ascended Astarion scene in our community - thank you so much, darling <3

- Most of the developersâ notes can be found in: CinematicNodeContext, AnimationTags
Some additional details: SFXTags, logicalname.
There is also NodeContext, which is easier to explore in the HTML format. Here, the focus is on the first two tags describing the scene.
- Parts of the text were often scattered randomly and had to be manually pieced together by reviewing the scenes. The blocks of text are separated exactly as they appeared in the file.
- Descriptions sometimes repeat one after another with slight variations, for accuracy, I will keep all versions. Purely technical elements like: [AL] No custom needed if they are just standing, are abbreviated.
But these are just a couple of cases; some technical elements have been preserved.
- Scenes have different branches that change the descriptions. These choices will be separated by this symbol: [ - ]
Or labeled with headings.
Overview:
Cinematics are an important part of the game - a collaborative, step-by-step process involving character writers, character actors, cinematic artists and the animation team.
The emphasis on cinematic scene direction, motion capture, and the artistic visual style is what drew thousands of people to the game.
For quite some time now, fans have been uncovering parts of the developersâ work on scene animations. There, you can find some interesting details about your favorite companions in cinematic scenes in Act 3.
Since the scenes in Act 3 are written when the charactersâ ideas and story arcs are already fully developed and have gone through a long production process, the notes in these final romance scenes are especially interesting.
Some scenes are described in detail - you can occasionally find notes on the charactersâ emotions, thoughts, and the overall narrative tone of the scene (Karlach, Astarion)
Others are more technical, focusing on movement and lighting, as much of what the scene conveys is likely expressed through dialogue between the characters (Laezel)

Karlach Date
CAMP_Karlach_CRD_ROM_Date
The Player walks into Dancing Lute Tavern and spots Karlach, who's already sitting at one of the tables. It's decorated in a white tablecloth and candles. She beckons you over.
Please reach out to Greg for poses/staging/characters/props placaments ref
Player takes a seat oppsite Karlach. They both pick up menus (menu is like a paper, not book type) and read them over, Karlach glancing at the player nervously from time to time.
After Karlach delivered the line, she beckons the waiter over while still holding menu with left hand.
A bored-looking half-orc drags himself over and grunts at the players (walk few step to the player then talk)
She smiles, scans the menu again. (menu is like a piece of paper, not book type)
The waiter takes the menus and ambles away.
The waiter approaches and roughly drops two plates of food and two cups in front of Karlach and player. The food is something other than the choice made by the player. The two cups are two generic cups, can be any liquid inside. (same cine as N348)
Henk turns back and walks away from the table.
Karlach shrugs, amused at Henk's horribleness. She reaches for the drink to hold it aloft and propose a toast, but she fumbles it and knocks the glass over, then she back to standard sitting pose.
Player raises their glass in toast, drinks from their cup, and is about to pass it to Karlach to drink, but she's roughly leaned over the table to grab the player and kiss them. She sits back down, jostling the table again.
Camera zoom out implying they're eating and drinking. When it comes back to them, the plates/ cups are gone and the lights are dimmer, implying the passage of time.
She reaches across the table o the player, takes their hands in hers.
Fade to black that opens on the player and Karlach in one of the rooms in the inn. This will be a scene of sexual intimacy. (The following is open to interpretation/ details can and should evolve to suit cinematic + actor needs)
Karlach sits on the bed in the room and the player approaches, positioning themself between her legs and kissing her deeply. Karlach stands up, lifts up the player off their feet and rolls them onto the bed, Karlach on top. She pauses, looking deep into the player's eyes. A look of consertnation passes briefly over her face, then the mood breaks. She smiles. (She is thinking about her mortality, about how much she loves the player, about the fragility of life). She bends down and kisses the player, then rolls to lay beside them, touching them intimately with one hand while she kisses them. Things escalate from there.

Fade to black that opens on the player and Karlach in one of the rooms in the inn. This will be a scene of non-sexual intimacy.

Karlach reaches up to hold the player's face and scooches forward to kiss their forehad and cheek, then a chaste but sweet peck on the lips.Player and Karlach fall asleep wrapped in each other's arms.

God Gale Ascension
EPI_Epilogue_GodGaleAscension
Gale stands in front of their romanced player, smilling.
The player and Gale stand in front of each other. As Gale starts the spell the player looks around in wonder as they're being envelopedby the magic releasing from the orb on Gale's chest.
The orb on Gale's chest begins to glow, his powers manifesting. The player looks around in wonder - they're both being enveloped in a kind of magic - similar to the effect of the Weave in spellteaching, but this is Gale's magic (Different colour?)
The magic surrounding them gathers speed, building it's own momentum. Gale takes the player's left hand with his right one.
The player closes their eyes. They trust him.
A flash of WHITE takes us from the rugged confines of camp to the eternity of the heavens. We don't see the player yet.
The player and Gale are still in the same position, in front of each other with Gale holding the player's hand.
Gale still holding the player's left hand with his right.
The player carefully opens their eyes to their new surroundings, still holding hands. The player slowly lets their hand go from Gale's and inspects themself. Looking down, checking their hands. Happy with the change they look back up at Gale with a smile.
We see the player for the first time. They're no longer a mortal being, but an astral, godlike one. They let go of Gale and inspect their new form (look at hands?). Looks good. They smile at Gale.
God Gale and God player kiss, arms wrapped around each other. In the astral heavens above them we see Gale's symbole flare into life. A second symbol joins it - there's a new god beside him.
- Breakup -
The player slowly steps toward Gale, they both close in for a final kiss and pull each other closer, but then the player pulls away suddenly as though given an electric shock, the power too strong. They reach for their lips in surprise before lowering their hand and looking back at Gale.
Gale and the player share one final kiss. If there's scope - his godly powers are overwhelming for the player, who pulls away as though given an electric shock.
*to edit once clarified* Gale and the player take one last look at each other, sharing a bittersweet smile. Gale takes a step back and turns around (or to his right), leaving the player behind as he slowly walks off on top of the water before floating up.
Gale and the player share a bittersweet smile, before he exits via the same means he arrived.
- Raphael part-
A portal appears - same as the one to House of Hope in Lower City - and Raphael steps out, in his human form. He stands before Gale and the player, with a smile on his face.
Gale clicks his fingers and Raphael poofs out of existence - Gale-style VFX magic for the vanishing.
Astarion Vampire Lord CAMP_Astarion_SD_ROM_BlackMassAftermath
Fade to black and fade in as Astarion takes TAV into another section of the camp/a quiet secluded place. You are naked and vulnerable before him.
Both Astarion and Player are naked., Player stands at the foot of the bed. They look slightly to their left as Astarion approaches them from behind., He kisses the Player on the left side of their neck... then roughly pushes Player down onto the bed. Player is now bent over at the edge of the bed. Sex begins.
(Note: While the sex isn't super explicit, it's important to show suggestions of movements...such as thrusting, action/reactions of ecstasy, etc)
Astarion leads Tav away to a secluded place. You both undress and Astarion pushes Tav to the bed. The sex is wild and animalistic. (Note: While the sex isn't super explicit, it's important to show suggestions of movements...such as thrusting, action/reactions of ecstasy, etc.)
Player and Astarion standing facing each other. They gaze lovingly at one another
(Note: They're both naked. Construction anim used for standing)
Tav kneels before Astarion.
This should be covered by the kneeling attitude,
Astarion stands proud before the Player. He is powerful. He is free
He pushes you down to the ground, gets on top of you.
Astarion places both hands on the Player's shoulders and pushes them down. They both tumble to the ground, him landing on top of the Player. He gazes down at Player. He is savouring the moment.
Player looks back at him in anticipation (Building tension here).
Logicalname Rough Bloodsucking
Astarion clutches your neck in his hand and grins, squeezing before biting you
Astarion's right hand shot up quickly, grabbing the Player's neck. Locking eyes with the Player, he starts to squeeze their neck, Player squirms a bit, gasping for breath.
They're enjoying it.
Astarion then releases Player's neck, leaning over to bare his fangs and bite into Player's neck. After a while, he stops and raises his head.
(Note: Astarion is still on top of Player, his body shifted slightly to the side (Player's right) so that he has room to take Player's neck and do all that bloodsucking stuff)
Logicalname Gentle Bloodsucking
Astarion takes your hand, kisses the top of it, then turns it over and starts to bite your wrist.
Astarion reaches down, takes Player's left hand with his right hand. He brought the hand up to his lips. He kisses it gently, tenderly.
Then looking at Player, he turns their hand over to expose the wrist.
He takes a bite. Player stares at Astarion while he feasts, enjoying the sensation. After a while, he stops and raises his head. (Note: Astarion is still lying on top of Player)
Shot of the graveyard to set the scene. (Question: Do we need to show actual graveyard, or just Astarion and Player emerging from bushes somewhere?)
Player and Astarion walking into graveyard. They stop as they reach their intended destination.
(Note: Walk and stand construction animation used)
Astarion walks towards gravestone. His steps are thoughtful and with purpose. (Cut to CU camera zooming onto gravestone). He stops and stands very slightly to gravestone's left. Astarion bends over (is gravestone high enough for him to bend over to interact?) and reaches out with both hands to clear away the ivy. He straightens up once he's done, dusting off his hands as he does so.
Astarion walks up to a gravestone covered in ivy and filth. It's old, cracked, and neglected. He reaches up and tears away the weeds. Underneath, we can see the inscription: \r\n| Astarion AncunĂn: 229 - 268 DR| (Note: Needs old gravestone prop with his name. Possible to use ivy plant to cover prop? How tall is gravestone? Does Astarion need to squat/crouch down or bend over to interact with gravestone?)
Old gravestone prop with Astarion's name. And ivy prop covering it?
Rustle of leaves being jostled. Nocturnal sounds, crickets in the bushes.
Old gravestone prop with Astarion's name. No longer covered in ivy.
Looking at the inscription on his grave.
Astarion takes out Cazador's dagger and starts carving into the stone, although we can't see what he's carving. When he's done, the camera angle reverses and we see he's roughly cut a new inscription into the stone. Below his date of birth is a new date - the current year. The inscription now reads |Astarion AncunĂn: 229 - 268 DRÂ 468 DR â
Scraping of metal against stone as Astarion carves. Nocturnal sounds, crickets in the bushes.
Astarion Carves New Date.
Astarion kneels down. He produces a dagger with his right hand. He then leans over towards the gravestone. His left hand touches the top of the gravestone while his right hand starts carving onto its surface. (Note: Astarion starts off standing. Then he kneels down). Player stands back and watches. They understand this is a solemn moment.
Astarion sits back, looking at his gravestone, saying nothing. He's in a moment of deep reflection. (Note: Astarion is still kneeling down).
Astarion stares at his grave, quietly contemplating his life/unlife (Note: Astarion is still kneeling down).
Astarion is still kneeling down. He stares thoughtfully at his gravestone. Player approaches Astarion and stops, standing to his right. They look at him... and then at the gravestone.
The player kneels next to Astarion (Note: Astarion is still kneeling down). Player starts with standing, then kneels down.
Player bends over and plucks a flower. They straighten up (Flower picking action happens a bit offscreen). They then approach the grave (standing at Astarion's right) and reverentially place said flower (with their right hand) onto the grave. They straighten back up to standing pose. (Camera cuts to a CU of the flower on the grave).
Player plucks a flower from the ground and lays it on Astarion's grave (Note: Needs flower prop. Astarion is still kneeling down.
Old gravestone prop with Astarion's name. No longer covered in ivy. A flower for the grave.
The player kneels next to Astarion (Note: Astarion is still kneeling down. Player starts with standing, then kneels down)
Player kneels down to Astarion's right. They loosely place both hands onto their lap. Both of them are now kneeling.
Turning to the player, taking their hands in his for a moment. (Note: Both Astarion and Player are kneeling)
Astarion shuffles his knees, turning right so that he's now facing the Player. Player shuffles and turns to the left to mirror him. Astarion leans over, reaches out to take both of Player's hand in his. He does so lovingly, tenderly... with a hint of seduction.
Astarion releases Player's hands. They're still kneeling down together.
Note: Astarion releases Player's hands. They're still kneeling facing each other.
Astarion kisses the player, taking them in his arms. They fall to the ground. Kissing continues.
Astarion leans forward, kisses Player. He stops kissing, then playfully pushes Player so that Player falls backwards onto the ground. Astarion follows suit... gets on top of Player and continues kissing them.
Nocturnal sounds, crickets in the bushes. Rustle of dry leaves and dirt as the lovebirds begin their passionate romp.
Fade to black. Sex sounds. (Note: Maybe camera pans up before fading to black with the dulcet symphony of sex)
Lae'zel appears, leaning over the player's bed with a sincere smile, shaking them awake.
Player stands from their bed and faces Lae'zel. She straightens out and smiles wider.
-
Player:Â Is everything all right?
Lae'zel reaches down and pulls the player up from their bed by their hand. Fade to black.
-
Fade back in. Player and Lae'zel sit on the roof of the Elfsong Tavern. The sun is just about to rise.
The camera moves to show the sun beginning to rise over the horizon. Soft light covers the faces of the player and Lae'zel in a beautiful orange glow.
Lae'zel reaches her hand towards the player's.
Lae'zel says nothing but smiles wide. She takes the player's hand and they watch the sun.
Lae'zel's smile fades. She nods, with slight sadness and stands. She walks away, then looks back over her shoulder.
At end of line, Lae'zel stands and walks away, then looks back over her shoulder.
Looking back over her shoulder. Fade to black after line.
Shadowheart and the player have reached a small quiet cove not far from Baldur's Gate, SH looks around approvingly.
The player turns their back to SH as she begins to undress off-screen.
The player turns away from Shadowheart and reaches to undress. The screen fades to black for a brief time passage-of-time cut. It comes back to playe nude, having left their clothing on the sand. They turn back to Shadowheart - who steps forward, already nude.
Camera holds on player. SH (offscreen) calls to the player while their back is still turned.
The player turns to peek, only to duck a balled item of clothing flung at them.
The player moves to undress. Shadowheart smiles, then follows suit - no nudity shown. Cut to them inside the water, obscuring their bodies.
-
The player starts to disrobe. Camera holds on Shadowheart, watching. Maybe her eyes widen a little. Brief fade down.
-
Shadowheart shrugs in a 'have it your way' gesture, then moves to undress. The player smiles, then follows suit - no nudity shown. Cut to them inside the water, obscuring their bodies.
The player and Shadowheart both stand at the shoreline, undressed and facing the water. Shadowheart turns. Time cut to the player and Shadowheart both standing at the shoreline, undressed and facing the water. Shadowheart turns to the player.
Deep breath to steel her nerves after 'wait'. After her line, Shadowheart walks forward out of frame. The player follows.
Shadowheart steps foward, nude. Off the player's look, she appears slightly apprehensive as she speaks.
-
The player dashes out of frame towards the water. After a brief hesitation, she follows.
Choice shouldn't be available if player chose DO AS SHE SAYS in Streaming Safe branch.
-
Shadowheart and player are paddling in water, hiding their nudity beneath the water, face to face.
Treading water, takes a deep breath to steel herself.
The player and Shadowheart tread water near one another.
Being splashed softly by player, feigns outrage.
She delivers her line, wry look on her face then splashs the player and moves toward them as the camera tilts to the moon overhead.
Sassy smile to conceal vulnerability.
Later, the player and Shadowheart are sitting side by side at the shore post-swim. Still undressed (if Streaming Safe isn't engaged)
Both still sitting on beach. The camera leaves them be, panning away to the shore. But no touch between them two.
Both still sitting on the beach. Player is to Shadowheart's right. Shadowheart is on her right side leaning back on her right arm.
She kisses the player softly, then hungrily. She lowers herself to the sand, the player following. They embrace, the player on top of Shadowheart. She suddenly utters a small gasp of pain - SH squirms slightly to move off an offscreen pebble poking into her.
The player and Shadowheart a tiny, neglected shrine of SelĂťne - little more than a statue of the moonmaiden in a quiet, overgrown city courtyard. Shadowheart produces a little bottle/vial full of dark red liquid.
Shadowheart unstops the vial of Nightsong's blood and moves towards the statue of SelĂťne. The player follows. from behind the alter looking up at Shadowheart as she pours the blood across it.
As Shadowheart steps back to admire her work, the player steps forward, smearing the blood around as though finger painting.
The statue of SelĂťne has been desecrated with the blood of her daughter. Red tears trail from the eyes. Assorted graffiti is dotted all over. The player looks down from the statue to their bloodied hand. Shadowheart appears at the player's side. She's bright-eyed and blood-smeared.
Shadowheart steps in close to the player, a hungry look in her eyes.
Taller players step forward, guiding Shadowheart into a kill by the shoulders.
Shorter race players take Shadowheart by the hand, guiding her into a kiss.
Shadowheart steps back from the kiss, delivers her line, then pushes the player to the ground, she kneels, straddling the player. She kisses forcefully.
The kiss ends, the players face a mix of shock and anticipation. The player's hand comes up subcontiously touching their lip, it's bleeding. Shadowheart smirks.
Shadowheart leans back, Shadowheart crosses her arms, reaching down to her belt line to pull her tunic up.
The player looks up as Shadowheart pantomimes undressing offscreen.
The statue of SelĂťne looms over them, covered in the blood of Nightsong...
-?- \It seems that the intimate scene has been edited in some details\
Further explicit content can be added before this node.
The player reaches down to their own belt line to remove their tunic. Cut to Shadowheart as she watches the player undress.
Shadowheart pulls the player's head down to her own.
Shadowheart topless and still strattling the player, puts her hand on the player's chest, delivers the first half her line, then rolls to a strattling position on top of her--then delivers the second half of her line.
Shadowheart pulls back from the kneeling kiss, delivers her line, then places a hand on the player's chest, shifting her weight and forcing the player to the ground. She strattles them and kisses, forcefully.

The player takes Wyll's right hand with their left. Wyll smiles and the scene fades out.

The scene fades back in. Wyll and the player are near the Chionthar, and walk towards a towering and impressive tree. Acorns are scattered underneath it. It is a beautiful night; the moon and stars shine bright. NOTE: Karlach CANNOT take Wyll's hand, they shouldn't be touching. See N41
Wyll kneels to the ground. He takes an acorn and holds it in the palm of his hands, but keeps them close to his body.
At the end of the line, Wyll holds his hands out to you, with the acorn held in them.
Wyll hands you the acorn at the end of the line.
The player takes the acorn from Wyll's hands. He smiles, but remains kneeling.
Wyll, still kneeling, pulls the player to the ground and they start kissing intensely.
Wyll pulls the player to the ground. They sit, holding hands, as the camera pans up, showing the beautiful landscape ahead of our lovers.
They roll about under the tree as the camera pans upwards, showing the beautiful night once more, as the happy couple begin to make love under the comfort of the Wilding Oak. (Use all the cinematic discretion you like!) The scene then fades away.
The camera moves from the two of you and outwards. A vista of stunning and quiet beauty.
-
Karlach sits next to Wyll, an intimate but safe distance. They talk all night.
-

Player:Â Leave without a word.
The player walks away. The camera shows Wyll standing there. He closes his eyes and the scene fades.
Halsin
CAMP_HalsinRomanceAct3_SD_ROM
The player finds Halsin waiting under a tree. He spots them, eager and a little relieved.
Halsin's eyes very briefly flick downwards at himself as if implying offscreen arousal.
Halsin rips his clothes off. Stands naked.

I agree with @eden-demon, @ironflower99, and @ashofdeadempires.
And, believe it or not, this âgameâ can be played by two people.
For all the âark of redemptionâ lovers:
In the present study, we looked at the relationships between the Dark Triad (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) and (i) em
A quote directly from the Introduction:
âOne of the suggestions is that individuals high in the Dark Triad may understand the feelings that other individuals have (i.e., have cognitive empathy), but they don't show an appropriate emotional response to emotion-evoking stimulus (i.e., lack affective empathy; e.g., Wai & Tiliopoulos, 2012).â
Affective empathy is emotional resonance; it is the ability to physically and emotionally sense the feelings of a loved one, to be âinfectedâ by their state, and to experience their pain as oneâs own. It is based on the activity of mirror neurons, which activate the same brain regions (the insula and the anterior cingulate cortex) as when one experiences pain oneself. In short, this is the thing that prevents one from âenjoyingâ the UA path, and a player with developed affective empathy will feel bad while playing through this game variant (Iâm not referring to myself here, though I also felt particularly bad about it; there are a certain number of people who feel the same way, and Iâve spoken with them).
âIn the current research, we were interested in the Dark Triad with respect to appropriateness of emotional response to sad, fearful, or happy stimulus. Previous studies have found that especially Machiavellianism and psychopathy have an association with schadenfreude, feeling happy about other's misfortune (Porter, Bhanwer, Woodworth, & Black, 2014). Further, narcissism relates to feeling positive when viewing sad faces, and psychopathy to feeling positive when viewing fearful faces (Wai & Tiliopoulos, 2012).â
But according to this study, the narcissists understand perfectly well just how sweet it can be when Astarion is feeling bitterness.
And the psychopaths felt positive about it:
(Photo of Tav from the petition against the prelude to the sadistic porn from patch 6)
Feeling positive? Oh, rightâitâs just a game; the character isnât real, and blah, blah, blah. Of course. But academic journals are publishing articles about this. So, are we going to apply psychology to games or not?
Of course, âI donât understand drama.â Not entirelyâI do understand it when itâs a passive medium, like a movie or a book, that doesnât require any active participation on my part in creating that âdramaâ in the life of the character I care about most. And, most importantly, how do we distinguish a lover of tragedy from a narcissist or a psychopath if they enjoy the same things? If we have studies showing that an abuser might believe they love you, and this allows us to label a fictional character an âabuserâ (actually, the video isnât about Astarion, but thereâs a lot of interesting stuff in itâweâll look at that later), then there are also specific scientific psychiatric studies showing that narcissists should like the UA path, and psychopathsâthe 6 patch. Letâs be consistent in all cases, then.
Yes, of course, as I was advised, I watched this video:
That's an interesting video, thanks. I found a few really interesting points in it. Let's look at how they apply to game characters (including Tav and possible dialogue options and actionsâor inactions that could be interpreted as neglect).
âPeople in loveless relationships are indeed at the highest risk of intimate partner violence (*some abusers ascend Astarion just to âkick him in the ballsâ). So when there is this uh stereotype of the abusive relationship as cold and detached, without care or empathy (*Tavâs behavior in the dock scene and, in general, their absolute calm and indifference to the fact that Astarion will never see the sun again and will suffer from hunger), there is some truth to that.â (time: 4.26)
So, in the game, Astarion may fall victim to a new abuser who will act violently toward him, and he may also find himself in a ârelationship that is cold and detached, lacking care or empathy.â
âBut the surprising thing is that people in high passion relationships who lack the other two components of love, intimacy and commitment, are also at risk. So a huge red flag is any sort of relationship where you have very high passion, low commitment and low intimacy because those types of relationships are ultimately just I want you (*I want your body) without the other two components of loving someone.â(4.43)
And itâs very interesting that in the video, the author talks specifically about this creature from a fanfic by an additional writer, which they tried to force upon us instead of our roleplay. Earlier in the video, Dr. Ana discussed the three key components of love: intimacy, commitment, and passion (which includes sexual attraction, and it is precisely this notion of âyouâre ascend him for the sake of sexâ that could only have been born in the imagination of someone creating a self-insert/perceiving the audience as a character capable only of this type of attachment, without the capacity for intimacy and commitment).
(The Triangular Theory of Love by American psychologist Robert J. Sternberg)
âCuz if you donât want to commit to someone, you donât really care about keeping them around long-term (*âYour Tav wants to break up,â âYou wonât be able to break up with himââdoesnât that ring a bell?) and you also donât care about connecting with them. You just want them. Do you actually really love them? The researcher said, âContrary to popular belief, love does not serve as an inherent buffer against psychological violence.â But I would argue that this type of love isnât really love. It doesnât have the three components of love.â (5.18)
Yes. Exactly. Thatâs why the roleplay options available to players in romantic relationships with Astarion in BG3 are so poor. Despite playersâ requests, we donât have any lines that could express intimacy and commitment. Moreover, anti-AA's have constantly tried to impose as âcanonâ for Tav precisely a psychopathic narcissist incapable of such things, but capable of killing Astarion (the most terrifying outcome of a relationship with an abuser, and it's no surprise that a relationship with their Tav could end this way). A character who possesses intimacy and commitment, and who will have all the corresponding lines after the epilogueâwhen âauthorial controlâ over them is impossibleâmust not exist in their fanfic. Maybe weâre just unlucky that hookup culture propaganda runs through all the romance in BG3? This topic is covered quite well later in the video:
âI simply cannot help but wonder about the implications regarding hookup culture. So often casual relationships follow the formula. High passion, low commitment, low intimacy. In fact, there are even therapists out there who encourage people to emotionally disconnect from their casual partners, to not share their inner worlds with each other at all, to treat the other person as nothing but a sex object.â(6.15)
High passion, low commitment, low intimacyâthatâs exactly that attitude expected from BG3 players toward their LI, and the game has everything you need for that kind of roleplay. You can force a person with sexual trauma to participate in an orgy, you can have sex with Halsin and get forced âconsentâ from Astarion. And then thereâs the Illithid, Mizora, and so on. And the bear that everyone remembers. Fanfiction and comics featuring Tav-whores who fuck Halsin right in front of AA and end up choosing Halsin fit perfectly into this storyline. In the game, thereâs no way to hug and gently kiss your loved one without mods; there isnât even a simple line like âI love you.â On the other hand, itâs practically impossible to escape the imposition that you âtreat the other person as nothing but a sex object.â
âNo. Nothing like no like being like, "Oh, tell me how you feel so I can give you some support." Literally no feelings. Literally no feelings. Yeah. There's no caretaking happening. You don't give a how they feel. They have other people for that. Exactly. Exactly. You're just there for that dick. Okay. Wait, I've got a good one. Okay. Have a few. Have a few. Don't just have one. Exactly. Be safe. Be smart.â(7.15) â Thank you, Dr. Ana; I really enjoyed your video. This quote perfectly captures why Iâve always wanted to âpullâ Astarion out of BG3 and play with himâand his personalityâin another game where I donât feel sickened by the way romantic relationships are portrayed and the dialogue and action options available to the PC.
âIf you cut out the intimacy component, too, and treat that person worse than you would treat any friend (*thatâs exactly how they treat Astarionâworse than all those âgood companionsââworrying about how he perceives these pseudo-âfriendsâ and what they say about him; these strangers must be more important than he is), just acting like you completely donât care whatâs going on in their inner world, in their lifeâyou just completely disregard all of that. Youâre putting people at risk of the second most common type of abuse, the type where the abuser wants you, but doesnât actually care about you beyond that. (*a creature from the authorâs fanfiction). And now we have empirical evidence of how dangerous this type of recommendation actually is.â (8.08)
âI just keep wondering if thereâs ever going to be any accountability for the mental health professionals who keep pushing hookup culture on us, even though research consistently shows its risks.â (8.32) â It would be good to say this about those who are allowed to write game scenarios; after all, weâre adults, so we can kind of ignore all those âmental health professionals who keep pushing hookup culture,â but we just canât seem to get rid of the âDiscord shitposting hall.â
So, what was our poor Astarion dealing with, given his trauma? â âThe type where the abuser wants you, but doesn't actually care about you beyond that.â Is that Tav from their fanfic?
âOr another way of looking at it is: no, abusers donât love their victims. They just want them.â â This isnât about Astarion (Astarion loves Tav, as even his hormonesâwhich Tav-Illithid can senseâprove). Is this their Tav again?
Why did they keep trying to apply this âsexualizationâ to us (âSay itâs hot. Say itâs attractiveâŚâ) And all that other bullshit about âpower dynamicsâ (in Welchâs fantasies, and in the fact that Tav is submissive by script, with no other lines, and a degradation check that even breaks the gameâs check mechanics) and âcontrol.â Why did they turn this nonsense into âcanon,â where the player (!) is portrayed as sexually obsessed, and present this as âthe truthâ? Letâs watch another video from an expert; maybe it will shed some additional light on the situation:
Yes, narcissists always make YOU out to be the source of the problem.
âWhy is it that victims of narcissistic abuse either end up thinking theyâre the abuser or that no one will believe them?â (beginning of the video) â Astarion is, of course, a fictional character, but they managed to portray him as an âabuser,â and his lines in the game and the many proofs of his love are not to be believed; instead, players are supposed to believe their âvisionâ of his storyline.
âSo, let's look at what a narcissist really is. A narcissist is someone who believes that they're special. They think they're better than everyone, even if they don't actually come out and say it. You'll see it in their actions and how they treat people and they really don't care about other people's feelings, especially when those feelings are inconvenient for them.â(0.16) â Yeah, theyâre special. Their Tav, who insults Astarion by comparing him to Cazador, is specialâbecause whatever they blurt out is the truth. If someone gets angry at their stupidity and malice, if Astarion reacts with rage to a trigger insult, that means theyâre right. If they believe that âThis power will trap you, just like it trapped Cazador,â then who cares what you think or what you actually wantâtheyâre special, after all. They can abuse the victim. Theyâre special. Just donât spoil the fun and highlight how bad Astarion has it next to such a âspecialâ person on the UA path, because âthose feelings are inconvenient for them.â
âSo, how do narcissists make you look like the bad guy or feel like the bad guy? Well, the reason why you might feel like the bad guy is because narcissists don't always show their true colors.â(1.35) Masters of virtue signaling in the purity culture. They love seeing Astarion endeavor to please them. If Astarion wonât let them make him into a victim, then thatâs itâheâs âCazador 2.0,â the âbad guy.â
âSo, another reason narcissists make you feel like you're the problem is because they're very quick to shame you. Narcissists have a hard time dealing with their own shame, and they have a lot of it. And so whenever someone struggles to deal with parts of themselvesâwith aspects of themselvesâthey're almost always going to judge other people for those same things. So if they have trouble facing shame, theyâre going to put it on you and make sure that you face your own shame. Itâs a form of projection that narcissists are really good at.â (2.41)âdonât you think this sounds a lot like the answer to why: âitâs very much admitting that you failed to think of him beyond a sex object, and care about more than thatâ?
âA narcissist will see you as all good or all bad. They have a very black and white way of viewing the world and the people in their lives.â(3.40) â Black-and-white thinking, the dichotomy of Astarion. Either heâs the âgoodâ UA, the âbetter version,â âready to fix himself,â or the âvillainâ AA, whom they hate. To be honest, after watching this video, it became much clearer to me how this nonsense about AA and UA being two different people could have even come about. After all, from a logical standpoint, itâs idioticâit doesnât happen that way. Itâs not just unrealistic; itâs, well⌠stupid. People donât split into âgoodâ and âevilâ twins; people can behave differently in different circumstances. But it seems that, for a âvery black-and-white way of viewing,â a person really can be either âevilâ or âgood,â and Astarion must split into two different people.
âSo, if you do something that they do not approve of, or maybe it's something that's objectively not great and you don't even approve of it, but they're going to make sure that you feel as bad as you possibly can about it because in that moment, you are all bad. They're not really capable of seeing you as a person who made a little mistake. In that moment, your mistake defines you and they're going to make sure that you feel that.â(3.50) â Astarion raised his voice in response to the insultâheâs âevil,â heâs âall bad,â heâs âtoxic,â and right now heâs not feeding the narcissistâs ego with approval.
âAnd if you're somebody who's insecure and if you're somebody who does carry around some shame, this is going to hit pretty deep and you're going to really internalize that external shaming of you and take on that shame. So regardless of what the other person does or their role in anything that happened, the shame makes you want to retreat and makes you beat yourself up. And that's exactly what it's designed to do.â(4.17) - Ascended Astarion, without the romance, shows significant progress in healing his trauma; he doesnât react to the narcissistâs attempts to hurt him by comparing him to his tormentor, and confidently replies: âNo, Iâm better than he ever was.â âIâve marched forward into my beautiful new future. Itâs a pity you couldnât keep up.â Unfortunately, a romantic relationship with a narcissist is truly a tragedy for someone with PTSD and trauma-related self-doubt like Astarionâs. Because of his insecurity and idealization of his partner, Astarion will be unable to recognize âwhat the other person does or their role in anything that happened,â and will try to keep that partner close to him. Toxic relationships with AA are, of course, possible when Tav behaves like a narcissist/abuser. And if Astarionâs relationship with them is toxic, that does not at all mean that a loving and understanding partner will have the same relationship with Astarion as a narcissist does.
But I think this clip from the video (11:30) is worth printing out and framing. Please just read or listen to the psychotherapist in the video. It explains everythingâhow they portray Astarion as an abuser, and even how itâs done in terms of the script. Weâve probably all noticed how many disgusting lines there are for Tav in AAâs romance. Itâs not only the comparison with Cazador. While there are few lines in the game that are even remotely suitable for roleplay, there are plenty of options for insulting him and causing him pain:
âNow we're going to talk about reactive abuse. And this happens very often with narcissists. So what they'll do to paint the picture that you are the problem is that they will pull the strings behind the scenes and maybe get you to explode in anger or to act in a way that you're not proud of in front of other people. And this paints the picture that you are the abusive person when really the other person is behind the scenes pulling the strings and they know exactly what they're doing and they are purposely getting you to react in a certain way in front of other people. So they will bait you into arguments or they'll bait you into a reaction. They'll talk about something that they know is triggering to you or they'll act in a way that they know is triggering to you. Maybe they'll act in a way that's exceptionally insensitive. And that's been a hot button issue in your relationship.â
And if we apply a psychiatric lens to gaming, this is a true red flag. Those who have tried to frame Astarionâs romance as a story of âabuseââthe same people, incidentally, who use these same tactics in fandom debates to push this narrative. âAnd this paints the picture that you are the abusive person when really the other person is behind the scenes pulling the strings and they know exactly what they're doing and they are purposely getting you to react in a certain way in front of other people.â â thatâs what the additional author did to Astarion, which is why thereâs this sense of the script being on rails, since they wrote the lines for Tav. And this is what the anti-AA crowd does to Astarion in this fandom.
âA narcissist, especially a covert narcissist, is pretty good at playing the perpetual victim when it's convenient for them.â <âŚ> âSo if a narcissist can get a group of people to feel sorry for them and to feel like they are being abused by you and then that pity turns into abuse, right?â(14.09)
Right. Firstâoh, my poor Tav, how Astarion yelled at Tav when she told him he was like a Cazador. Oh, just look at my poor Tavâs face. ThenâIâd been waiting so long to kill him, to seize the Brain, and to bring the former slave to his knees. Some people wrote that theyâd been waiting six months to do that.
âSo the other people start acting in ways that is abusive to you because they think you deserve it. That is fuel for a narcissist. So they will play the perpetual victim as long as it's benefiting them and fueling their need for supply. So this is when you'll see the smear campaign come in. And those people who end up acting in ways that are abusive to you, those people who absolutely will not even try to understand your perspective. That's what we call the narcissist's flying monkeys.â (14.38)
I highly recommend watching the entire video about narcissistsâit might come in handy in real lifeâbut in this post, Iâve set out to apply real-world psychology to a fictional character. It could certainly be an interesting exercise. But, of course, this is just a game; games have no connection to reality, and anything goes in a game. However, if we add a new level to the game by applying real psychology to it, please donât fall for everyone and anyone who tries to manipulate you with psychotherapeutic terms. Dig deeper on your own, learn more, so you donât become what are called ânarcissistâs flying monkeys.â

Not a "Cycle of Abuse" - Just a Vampire Romance You Didnât Understand đ
Itâs always interesting how quickly people reach for phrases like "cycle of abuse" when faced with Ascended Astarion - because that interpretation only holds if you strip away context, mechanics, and the actual structure of the relationship.
Not just emotionally but narratively.
Because what defines Cazador Szarr isnât simply "power."
Itâs enforced power over those who have none:
no choice
no autonomy
That framework is essential. Without it, the "cycle" argument collapses.
And that framework does not exist in Astarionâs romance.
When he offers eternity, he does not deceive, coerce, or trap Tav into it. He is explicit to the point of bluntness:
Astarion: "But if you want the gift of eternity, I can give you that. One little bite is all it would take. That's what you want, isn't it? To be mine? Forever? My dark consort. My right hand. My most beloved spawn."
That is a fully informed choice.
And everything that follows reinforces that this is not about domination but about a chosen bond.
"Aeterna amantes. Lovers forever, until the world falls down."
"We are sovereigns. My sole endeavour now is to make this world yours and mine alone."
"My pretty consort, I don't like to see doubt cast upon your face. Fear not: you are mine."
"Seven thousand souls have given me the power to carve out my own future, and I want you to be part of it."
"Yes, me treasure?"
"Little love, whatever could be the matter?"
"Ask me anything, and it will be yours."
This is not the language of someone recreating a system of fear and punishment.
There is no threat.
No coercion.
No removal of self.
If anything, Tav is consistently centered, reassured, and elevated.
And yes, "you are mine" is not some automatic red flag people want it to be.
People in love say things like that all the time. It expresses attachment, exclusivity, devotion. â¤ď¸
Context is what matters.
And in this context, itâs paired with reassurance, affection, and choice - not fear or control.
You can still refuse him.
Even more telling: outside of romance, he never turns the player at all.
So the idea of some inevitable "cycle" continuing regardless of consent doesnât actually align with what the game shows.
What does exist is a very specific outcome:
If you accept - you are not being turned into a random subordinate.
You are becoming a vampire bride / consort - a chosen, bonded partner - not a disposable thrall.
You have chosen:
immortality
permanence
and a supernatural bond
So when he says "youâre mine," it isnât sudden.
Itâs consistent.
And even then, the emotional core doesnât shift into control - it stays rooted in attachment:
Astarion: "I may have power, but it would be nothing without you. You complete me. And together, we are unstoppable. So Heavens help the fool that tries to get in our way."
Astarion: "No, everything I want is standing right here." (Pointing on Tav)
For someone supposedly continuing a cycle of domination, that is a very strange priority. đ
And notably, his focus is not locked into conquest either.
After defeating the Netherbrain, he literally defers to Tav:
Astarion: "You know, now that our enemies have fallen, I might be the most powerful person in the world. And as you're my consort, that makes us the most powerful people in the world."
Player: "I wouldn't want it any other way."
Astarion: "And neither would I. Together, we can do anything. The world is ours for the taking. So, what would you like?"
Player: "I want to see the world, with you at my side."
Astarion: "Then you shall. We'll travel the lands together, tasting everything Faerun has to offer. Perhaps we'll find somewhere we'd like to stay for a century or two - perhaps not. We have a beautiful, bloody future to look forward to, my love. I can't be sure what it holds for us, but I know one thing. This is going to be fun."
He follows Tavâs desire.
Not control. Not domination.
Alignment.
And then thereâs the moment people constantly misread - usually because they either donât understand English properly or just latch onto one word and ignore the sentence around it.
The narration literally says:
"He will always see you as degrading yourself if you continue to be with him. But perhaps you wish to degrade yourself. And he knows it."
Not:
"He degrades you" â
But:
"You are choosing this - and he recognizes it" âźď¸
That is not forced humiliation.
This line is not describing him degrading Tav - itâs describing how he interprets Tavâs choice.
After Ascension, Astarion sees himself as something dark, dangerous, and fundamentally removed from what Tav represents.
So from his perspective, Tav choosing to stay with him - to love him, to bind themselves to him - looks like them lowering themselves to his level.
Thatâs why the wording is specific: you degrading yourself, not him doing it to you.
And the second sentence makes it even clearer: "perhaps you wish to degrade yourself. And he knows it." This isnât coercion or humiliation being imposed. Itâs recognition. He sees that Tav understands what he is and chooses him anyway.
And this is where the "he becomes his abuser" argument completely collapses on a psychological level. đ
Cycles of abuse are not about power.
They are about repetition of the same harmful patterns:
control through fear
removal of agency
punishment for resistance
That structure requires the victim to lose choice.
Tav never loses it.
They are informed.
They are given options.
Which means the core mechanism of an abuse cycle is not present here.
What is present instead is something much simpler and much less convenient for that narrative:
A trauma survivor choosing power,
and choosing to share it with his lover â¤ď¸
This isnât a story about becoming his abuser.
Itâs a story about never being powerless again
and deciding who stands beside you â¤ď¸
............Itâs also worth noting that this dynamic only starts to resemble "abuse" if the player themselves turns it into one.
If you constantly dismiss him or mock him - he becomes sharper, more reactive. Thatâs not some hidden "true nature". Thatâs a response.
The relationship is reactive by design. He mirrors how heâs treated, especially after Ascension, when he no longer tolerates being diminished.
So if someone experiences hostility there, itâs worth asking where itâs actually coming from.
Because at that point, the "abuse" isnât something being done to the player.
Itâs something the player is participating in.
P.S. Not everything you donât like is abuse - sometimes you just donât understand it. đ
A funny thing I found in the old devnotes from the release version of BG3, back when the epilogues hadnât been implemented yet and we only got to see them in Patch 5
