the case of edwin's hiccups
âCharles, could you pass me the - Blood and Bone compendium please?â Edwin says from his place at the desk, hidden behind a pile of ancient books. He pauses strangely in the middle of his sentence.
âUh, sure, which shelf is it on?â Charles asks, moving over to their mini library.
âBack - bookcase, three shelves - down,â he pauses again between words.
âGot it.â
Charles takes the book from the shelf and returns to the desk, dropping it on the top of Edwinâs âpotentially helpfulâ pile.
âAre you okay?â he asks, eyeing Edwin suspiciously. He notices his chest jolt slightly.
âIâm perfectly - fine, Charles.â
With every pause, his mouth closes as though trying to hold something back.
âNah, mate, I can tell somethingâs wrong, what is it?â
âNothing is-â this time, instead of a quiet pause, Edwin hiccups loudly. âIâm fine. Letâs just get on with this research before poor Emilia loses all sanity she has left.â
Edwin reaches for Blood and Bone, but Charles gets there first, stopping him.
âCharles, pl-â hic â-ease.â
âAh, youâve got hiccups!â Charles says, trying not to laugh.
Edwin huffs, rolling his eyes.
Charles chuckles, then his smile disappears.
âHold on. How can ghosts get hiccups? This has never happened before to either of us.â
âI donât know, but that really isnât our priority right now.â
âBut what if itâs dangerous? We should at least look it up. We donât need to breathe, so thatâs weird.â
Edwin looks up at him, visibly annoyed but also clearly in agreement. The worried look on Charlesâs face is what ultimately convinces him.
âFine, Iâll need Spectral Maladies.â
Charles retrieves it from the shelf. Itâs one of the books they rely on often, so he knows exactly how far along which shelf he needs to go to grab it.
âThank you,â Edwin says, opening the book to the contents page and running his finger down the alphabetised list. âH, H, H-â hic â-hiccups.â
Charles snorts back a laugh. âYou hiccupped right when you said it.â
âYes, I noticed. NowâŚâ
Edwin skims the page, then reads aloud.
ââWhile very rare, ghosts can - get hiccups just like living people. Despite not breathing, the - diaphragm can still contract. In ghosts, hiccups are â not harmful. However-,â ugh.â
âWhat is it?â
ââHowever, much like with hiccups in humans who are still living, there is no - guaranteed cure. The malady must simply be waited out until it subsides.ââ
âOh, so itâs literally just like normal hiccups,â Charles shrugs, visibly relaxing in the knowledge that Edwin isnât at any risk of harm.
âNot entirely,â Edwin replies. ââThe one thing that differentiates the living from the spectral in this case is that a ghostâs â experience is much more dependent on their emotions. Frustration and anger especially can lead the ailment to get - worse, and can lead to them persisting for longer.ââ
âRight. So wait and keep calm, pretty much.â
âYep. And there is no danger. So-â hic â-letâs continue with the case, shall we?â
Edwin closes Spectral Maladies and places it on the pile of books to his left, a stack of tomes which he has deemed unhelpful in their research on pine pixies to help save a young girl having visions of terrifying futures every time she closes her eyes.
An hour passes. The pile to Edwinâs left only gets taller â and the hiccups still persist.
Edwin has his head in his hands, a book on supernatural psychology open in front of him, desperately trying to read over a page on hallucinations; but having to reread every other line since his thought is interrupted by yet another hiccup. He huffs in frustration.
âYou alright, mate?â
âThese damned hiccups wonât â go away.â
âI know, but that book said they get worse with frustration, yeah? This case research probably isnât helping.â
âIt definitely isnât, but we - need to figure out - whatâs happening here - Charles.â
âYeah we do, but donât you think itâs time we had a break? Itâs nearly 4am,â Charles says, putting the book he was reading down and pacing over to the desk.
âWe donât need - sleep, I do not see the - point in a break.â
âWe need a break because-â Charles plucks the book from Edwinâs hands. â-youâre getting overwhelmed. We havenât gotten anywhere with these books in two hours, letâs at least stop til this goes away so you can focus.â
âI suppose â you have â a point.â Edwin can barely get a word out now; his hiccups are so intense.
They move the piles of books away from the desk and onto the sofa for now, so theyâre hopefully out of Edwinâs mind. Charles proposes they try some of the ways his mum used to try and help get rid of hiccups when he was a kid.
âHold your breath, maybe?â he suggests.
âI doubt â that would work, Charles. We â donât breathe unless we â choose to anyway. The diaphragm â would contract regardless.â
âTry?â
Edwin takes a deep breath and holds it. The hiccups still continue at the same frequency. Charles sighs.
âNever mind then. Are you still frustrated at the job, mate? They donât seem to have calmed down at all since we put the books away.â
âNo. Well â yes. But not â entirely. I always â got overwhelmed with â hiccups as a child. Theyâre â not a particularly - fun sensory experience.â
âAlright, letâs just focus on getting rid of them then.â
Charles hums, thinking.
âMy mum always said chugging a glass of water was meant to help.â
âWe canât drink â Charles.â
âYeahâŚit never worked anyway. The only other thing wasâŚâ Charlesâs eyes move away from Edwinâs to look above him.
âWhat?â Edwin asks impatiently.
Charles doesnât reply, just stares over the top of Edwinâs head in silence. Edwin turns to see what heâs looking at, but there doesnât seem to be anything of note there, just the dim glow of the streetlamps below.
âCharles, what? What - else helped?â
Still, Charles doesnât move.
âAre you-â
âRAH!â Charles suddenly shouts, leaning closer to Edwin, who jumps back a little in his seat, one hand clutching his lapel.
âCharles you scared the daylights out of me.â
âExactly. Mum always used to try and make me jump to like, scare the hiccups away? That actually sounds stupid now that I think about it.â
âWell, maybe â there is some logic there. If â the diaphragm experiences â a sudden jolt, perhaps â it would stop â the spasms.â
âIt didnât work though, clearly.â
âTry again, perhaps.â
âBut youâll know itâs coming, it wonât work.â
Edwin huffs in frustration.
While Charles thinks, Edwinâs hiccupping only seems to get worse until eventually theyâre happening so rapidly he sounds like heâs hyperventilating. One hand sits on his chest, as though somehow trying to compress them to stop them escaping.
âHey, mate, itâs alright,â Charles comforts, putting his hand over Edwinâs on his chest.
âI â just â want â them â gone,â Edwin manages, clearly very overwhelmed. He had already taken off his jacket and vest, but now heâs also taken off his bow tie and undone the top few buttons of his shirt, as though heâs struggling for breath.
âI have one idea,â Charles says finally.
He really doesnât want to. This isnât how he wanted this particular thing to go, but he was at a loss, unable to think of anything else that could scare or shock Edwin that he wouldnât be anticipating. This is the final option. Besides, he canât leave Edwin sitting there suffering. He may not be in much pain but this is clearly affecting him as though it is, and he seems on the verge of tears.
Charles takes a deep breath, and crouches on the floor in front of Edwinâs desk chair. He moves his hand from Edwinâs chest up to his collarbone, and his other hand joins it, mimicking the comforting motions he used on the way out of Hell.
At the simple motion, the hiccups seem to slow down, and Edwin breathes deeply, focusing on the sensation. Slowing down is good, slowing down means Edwinâs less frustrated and overwhelmed. But the gentle touch wouldnât make them go away completely.
âRight, I really wanted this to happen at a better moment but I think itâs all I have left, okay?â
Edwin nods, confusion evident on his face.
âDo you trust me?â Charles asks seriously.
âYes.â Edwin responds immediately.
âAre you sure?â
âAlways, Charles.â
Edwin has no idea what heâs expecting Charles to do. What he certainly does not expect is for Charles to lean forwards and kiss him.
Edwin gasps as their lips touch. The kiss only lasts a split second before Charles pulls back, checking Edwinâs face for signs of discomfort and further distress; he finds none.
âWhat-â Edwin begins.
âIâve figured it out mate. Turns out Iâm in love with you, too.â
âReally?â
Edwin can barely believe this. A moment ago, he was bordering on hyperventilating in overstimulation, and now heâs breathing just as quickly for an entirely different reason, that he could not have possibly anticipated. CharlesâŚfeels the same?
âYeah,â Charles smiles, leaning his forehead against Edwinâs. âProper gone for you. When I really think about it, it couldnât be anyone else, could it?â
Edwin pushes his face further forward, capturing Charlesâs lips in a second kiss. How else is he supposed to respond? His hand reaches to hold Charlesâs face, pulling him in as close as possible as their lips begin to part and the kiss deepens.
Edwin had dreamed about this moment for so long, but he couldnât have predicted the true feeling of Charlesâs mouth moving against his own. It was infinitely more than the kiss with Monty: he could feel the warmth of Charlesâs skin, his breath on his face each time they momentarily parted, the slight roughness of Charlesâs chapped lips. Itâs clumsy, but itâs soft, and itâs perfect.
Eventually, they pull away, looking into each otherâs eyes and smiling widely.
âWell,â Charles says, a little breathless. âLooks like that worked.â
âWorked?â Edwin is equally out of breath.
âYouâre not hiccupping anymore, mate.â
Oh. Charles is right. His chest is calmer, the ache within it beginning to fade away. He is able to focus properly on more things around him â his notebook open on the desk in front of him; the pile of books dropped onto the sofa; Charlesâs hand on the back of his neck, gently running through his hair. He is no longer overwhelmed by the feeling of his chest spasming, now only by the love and shock of what just happened between him and the grinning boy in front of him.
âOh. It appears not.â He says simply. Then one corner of his mouth moves upwards into a slight knowing smirk. âWell, perhaps it wouldnât hurt to continueâŚjust to be absolutely certain this cure has worked.â
He canât help it. Heâs been given one of the things he has been both wanting for months and simultaneously trying desperately not to want. Now he has it, heâs insatiable. He misses Charlesâs kiss already, and itâs only been seconds since they parted.
âOh, definitely,â Charles agrees, nodding with enthusiasm. âItâs a proper investigation, innit?â
âPrecisely,â Edwin replies, tugging Charles back in by his chain necklace and causing a quiet yelp to escape his throat before being muffled by Edwinâs lips.
âThis better not happen again, the hiccups thing,â Charles says when they move apart once more.
âWhy?â
âWell, I donât think Iâve got anything else thatâs enough to shock you out of them,â he laughs.
âIt wouldnât hurt to attempt this tried and tested method again, I wouldnât think,â Edwin raises one eyebrow slightly.
âYeah? Who wouldâve thought, snogging as a cure for hiccups.â
âItâs certainly not mentioned in Spectral Maladies. Although, I may add it in as a footnote. Just in case.â
ââCourse.â
Edwin stands up from his desk chair, purposefully brushing past Charles on his way to grab the book from the sofa. He brings it back, sits back down and opens it to the page on ghost hiccups. He takes his pen and jots a note in the bottom corner of the page:
Approved methods of remedy:
- KissingÂ
Smiling to himself, he drops the pen back into the inkwell and looks up at Charles. He still canât quite comprehend what has been established in the last few minutes.
âAre youâŚcertain? About your feelings for me?â he asks, just to be sure; just because he wants to hear it again.
âAbsolutely certain.â
âBecauseâŚyou know you donât have to return my affections. I am perfectly fine with our relationship continuing to be strictly platonic,â Edwin reassures.
He hopes Charles knows that his confession had not been intended as an expectation.
âMate, do you really think our relationship has ever been âstrictly platonicâ?â Charles laughs.
He does have a point.
âWell, I will admit weâre not exactly your average pair of close friends.â
Would normal friends be able to live with one another every day and night for thirty-four years? Would normal friends run from Death herself together for eternity? Would normal friends literally go to Hell for one another? Edwin doubts it.
âThatâs an understatement,â Charles says. âI, uh, I talked to Crystal about it, since she seemed to notice we were a bit weird right when she met us.â
âAnd what did she say?â
âShe kinda suggested something to me that made me rethink everything. She said maybe the reason I didnât think I was in love with you was because I didnât have a crush.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, in my mind, romantic relationships kinda always go down the route of: you meet someone, you develop romantic feelings, then you get together. Or if youâre friends first, thereâs a big moment where it hits you that thereâs something else there. I never felt that with you. But I guess the reason I never noticed it was because there wasnât one moment. Itâs happened so gradually I was never even aware of it.â
âI suppose not everyone gets thirty years for their relationship to develop.â
âExactly. So I guess instead of having an oh shit Iâm in love with my best friend moment, after your confession I kind of had an oh shit Iâve beenin love with my best friend for years moment. It wasâŚa lot.â
âWell, this certainly is an unexpected development.â
âIâm just sorry I made you wait. I fully realised a month or so after we got back from America but I was trying to plan something proper special. And, well, apparently ghost hiccups count as special enough.â
âI would have waited an eternity for you, Charles Rowland, if it meant I could have this,â Edwin confesses, taking Charlesâs hand in his own. âAnd even if I couldnât, I would wait still. Your mere presence is worth everything to me.â
Charles doesnât know how to respond to that, canât respond, so he does the only thing he can: lunges forward to kiss his partner yet again, this time much more intensely and passionately, one leg lifting to kneel beside Edwinâs thigh on his chair. He holds Edwinâs face in his hands as he all but devours him, Edwinâs own hands moving to grab his waist, gripping tightly in a way Charles wholeheartedly believes he could get drunk on. Edwin gasps into his mouth, and that only spurs him on more.
The moment is suddenly broken when the front door to the office bursts open, and Crystal enters.
âHey guys, how- Jesus Christ!â she shrieks upon spotting the boys practically on top of each other on Edwinâs desk chair.
She covers her eyes dramatically. Charles carefully lifts himself off Edwin, desperately holding back laughter.
Edwin clears his throat, attempting to fix his collar.
âGood morning, Crystal.â
âHey,â Charles says, grinning.
âCan I uncover my eyes now?â Crystal asks.
âYeah, yeah, we were just kissing donât panic.â
âGood,â she says, taking her coat off and hanging it up beside the door.
She walks over to Charles, a knowing smile on her face. âWhy didnât you tell me you were planning something?â
She hits him lightly on the arm.
âIt wasnât exactlyâŚplanned,â Charles laughs.
âWhat happened?â
âUhâŚhiccups?â
Crystal raises an eyebrow.
âIâm not even gonna ask,â she shakes her head. âBut now that thisâ- Crystal points at them, indicating between the twoâ âis a thing, weâre gonna need some rules for this office so I donât actually get fucking traumatised.â
Crystal sits in the clients chair opposite Edwin, expectantly. Charles gets the message, perching on the arm of Edwinâs chair as Crystal begins listing her rules for working with a couple of repressed teenage ghosts now in the honeymoon phase.
Meanwhile, Edwin silently thanks whatever fate or god gave him those damned hiccups.
day 1 of @painlandweek
this has come around so fast omgggg
day 1 prompt: fake relationship
summary: when niko and crystal come back from a night out at a gay club, edwin asks if he can join them next time. while there, he gets hit on by a man who can't seem to get the hint that he has no interest. charles does the obvious thing, and pretends to be edwin's boyfriend to get him to back off. it causes zero feelings whatsoever.
notes: i haven't managed to write for every day this year which i'm pretty sad about, but i had exams recently and i'm also quite busy this week, i'm meeting my long distance girlfriend for the first time!! so i may not have written as much gay, but i will be being very gay, so i think that makes up for it LMAO

fake it 'til you make it...or something like that
âThose two had better get here on time, this case is rather urgent!â Edwin says impatiently, glancing at the clock; itâs nearly 10am.
âTheyâll be here donât worry,â Charles assures.
Heâs sitting on the floor, polishing his new cricket bat with a magic varnish that would hopefully prevent any future breakages like what happened in Estherâs basement.
At that moment, as if they had heard them talking, the front door opens and Niko enters, all but dragging Crystal behind her.
âMorning, guys!â Niko says cheerily.
âMorning,â Crystal mumbles in response, immediately heading for the tiny sofa and flopping down on it.
Theyâd been out the night prior with a few friends theyâd made on a recent case. Crystal turned 18 a couple of weeks ago, and it had been a few months since Nikoâs birthday, so they joined them on a night out at a supernatural gay club in Soho. Going by how she looks this morning, Charles and Edwin suppose Crystal had a little more to drink than Niko did.
âYou two had fun last night then?â Charles smiles, repacking the bat in his backpack.
âYes! It was so good!â Niko enthuses.
She begins rambling about their experiences at the club, particularly animated about the music and the dancing. Crystal nods along silently from where sheâs slouched on the sofa.
Edwin listens intently to Nikoâs retelling and once sheâs finished, he opens his mouth to reply.
âThat sounds wonderful, Niko. WouldâŚwould I possibly be able to come with you next time?â he asks, his hands fidgeting a little on the desk in front of him.
Crystal sits up slightly at that.
âAre you sure itâd be your thing?â she asks, her voice slightly gravelly.
âWell, I suppose Iâll never know unless I try.â
Niko flashes him a huge grin. Sheâs been trying to get him to try new things more often for months since she returned from the place she got stuck in after her âdeathâ and is overjoyed that he seems to be considering this.
âIf itâs the queer aspect of it youâre interested in, there is a lot more to queer culture than clubbing. I didnât expect it to be your thing,â Crystal says.
âIâd like to try,â Edwin replies, determined.
âOkay well, Jamie, Sammie and Liv are planning on going again next Friday so Iâll tell them weâll have two more tagging along.â
Crystal pulls her phone out of the pocket of her shorts and texts them.
âHold on, two more?â Edwin asks.
âWell, Iâm presuming since weâre all going Charles is too,â Crystal replies, not looking up from her screen.
âCharles?â Edwin turns to him.
âYeah, why not? Itâll be fun!â
âThatâs settled then. Texting Jamie now.â
âGood, then letâs focus, shall we? We have a case to crack,â Edwin says, indicating to the stack of books sitting on the edge of the desk.
The Case of the Meddlesome Mask was complete within a few days, and the agencyâs case board remained empty for the rest of the week, which gave the four of them time to plan the most important part of their night out â outfits.
When Friday came around, they split into pairs to get ready â Niko at the office with Edwin, and Crystal at her and Nikoâs flat with Charles.
âAre you certain this outfit is necessary, Niko? Whatâs wrong with my usual clothing?â
âYou look like a schoolboy! Not a cool club look.â
âRight.â
âAnd the outfit I picked out for you isnât too different, donât worry. Iâm not putting you in a crop top and fishnets.â
Edwin feels himself blush at simply the concept.
âThat is something, I suppose.â
Niko is already ready for the night, her outfit brightly coloured as usual, just a lot more sparkly: a yellow halter dress with a matching headband, a pink tote bag and bold pink and yellow glittery eyeshadow. She looks beautiful and eccentric, as always.
Niko reaches into her bag and takes out a shirt and a pair of trousers, both much duller in colour than her own outfit. She places them on the desk, and Edwin hovers his hand over them. He mutters an incantation in Aramaic and the clothes seem to flicker in and out of reality for a second before resettling.
âYay. All ghostified!â
Niko turns around to face the window as Edwin begins to change.
âLet me know if you need any help!â she says.
âI think I can manage,â Edwin chuckles, removing his bow tie and detachable collar.
Once his shirt and undershirt are removed, he holds up the new shirt Niko picked out for him. It is a gorgeous dark blue, and looks a tiny bit smaller than his usual clothes.
âAre you sure this will fit, Niko?â
âYeah! We measured you and everything! Iâm guessing the shirt is a little tighter fitting than what you usually wear, if thatâs what youâre wondering.â
âAh.â
Edwin slips the shirt on. Niko is right, it is much tighter fitting than his school uniform. Itâs different butâŚhe thinks heâll get used to it. He buttons it up, then moves onto the trousers. He sits down to take his boots off, then untucks the ends of his knickerbockers from his socks and removes them too.
The trousers Niko picked out are black and fitted, and Edwin once again worries they may be too small. However when he puts them on, they fit perfectly, even if they do feel a little strange to him.
Edwin tucks the shirt into the trousers, then clears his throat.
âYou can turn around now, Niko.â
Niko turns around to look at him and smiles.
âThey suit you so well!â she runs up to him and hugs him.
Edwin smiles back, looking down at his clothes.
âButâŚâ
âWhat?â
âAt the club most people would wear it a little moreâŚcasually?â she explains. She raises her hands to his neck. âCan I?â
Edwin nods.
Niko carefully undoes the top few buttons on Edwinâs shirt, enough that his collarbones are visible, along with a very subtle hint of hair at the top of his chest.
âThere.â
âAre you sure, Niko? I feel a littleâŚnaked.â
âIf you want them done up thatâs fine! I donât want you to be uncomfortable, but this looks really good.â
âHmmâŚâ
Edwin considers but ultimately decides to leave the buttons as Niko changed them.
Niko tilts her head a little, as though inspecting him.
âMaybe roll the sleeves up, too? I think that would really elevate the look,â she says, as though sheâs on her own fashion TV show.
The shirt is nearly so tight itâs impossible, but Edwin does manage to roll the sleeves up just past his elbow. The outfit makes him feel a little less formal than usual, like he could let loose a little more; which, he supposed, was the whole point of the evening.
âPerfect!â Niko says, at the same moment her phone buzzes in her bag.
She pulls it out to check it, then frowns.
âNo!â she groans.
âWhat is it?â
âCrystalâs just texted. Jamie, Sammie and Liv canât make it anymore.â
âOh.â
Edwin looks down at the floor, then reaches up as though to begin taking the outfit off, just as he was starting to really like it.
âNo!â Niko shouts, stopping him. âNo, weâre still going! Itâll just be the four of us instead of seven.â
Edwin sighs in relief.
âAh, right.â
âYou ready to go meet them outside the flat?â
âI think so.â
Edwin offers his arm to Niko, who interlinks her own, and they leave the office.
Charles and Crystal are already waiting for them outside the block of flats the girls live in.
Crystal is wearing a purple mesh top with a black bralette underneath, along with torn-looking black denim shorts and her heavy floral boots. She has her hair braided at the front and covered in purple glitter, her curls loose at the back. She and Niko look like the sun and the moon came alive as teenage girls.
Charlesâs outfit is what distracts Edwin the most, simply because it is Charles. Heâs replaced his red polo shirt with a vest in the same colour, not unlike the white one he wears beneath his typical clothes. With it, he wears similar black shorts to Crystal, only his are less torn and longer. Edwin canât help staring at his legs for a while. His chain necklace glimmers on his collarbone, sitting directly on his skin rather than his shirt, and oh. Heâs put more eyeliner on than usual. Rather than just a tiny amount on his bottom waterline, the black makeup goes all around his eyes and flicks out into a point at the corners. It makes the brown of his irises look even warmer, somehow.
Charles seems equally as taken aback by Edwinâs outfit. He wears his own clothes more casually sometimes, sure, but they are much looser fitting than the shirt he is wearing right now, and he never undoes quite so many of his buttons. Charles finds himself mesmerised by the way his biceps move beneath the fabric, and the way it clings to his chest to reveal he is much more muscular than expected beneath all those usual layers. Edwin lookedâŚfit. Well, he always did, but now that was brought to the forefront in the best way. That doesnât mean Charles is attracted to him. No, Edwin being fit is just a fact. Anyone can see that. Definitely.
Neither boy realises theyâre properly staring at the other until Crystal clears her throat and breaks them out of their trance.
âAre you two just gonna keep ogling each other or are we gonna get moving?â
âShh, Crystal, theyâve only seen each other in one outfit for thirty years, let them ogle,â Niko whisper-shouts, grinning as her eyes flick back and forth between the two.
âIâm not ogling,â Charles says, but the slight nervous laugh in his voice gives away the fact that yeah, he definitely was.
The four of them walk the short journey to the club and queue up to get in. Niko and Crystal join the queue for the living, where they show the bouncers their IDs and get let in, while Charles and Edwin join the queue for ghosts. Since if a person dies underage, their ghosts remain forever minors, there are exceptions to the age restrictions at this particular club. Itâs not as if theyâre going to be purchasing alcohol anyway; they physically cannot drink it. For ghosts, the club serves more as a social space than anything else.
Upon entering the club, both Charles and Edwin are taken aback by how full it is â the dance floor is packed, there is a crowd around the bar, and most of the small tables dotted around are taken by groups of people and beings in even more extravagant outfits than those Niko and Crystal are wearing. Edwin is a little overwhelmed, but he feels free.
âYou guys good?â Crystal asks, her and Niko having finally reached the front of the entrance queue. She has to shout over the loud music.
âYes, I think so,â Edwin replies.
âNiko and I are heading to dance, wanna come with?â
âI think I might find a place to sit down first!â
âYeah, same,â Charles says.
âSuit yourself. Weâll be in the crowd,â Crystal manages to shout as Niko drags her into the mass of people.
Edwin and Charles manage to find two stools at the far end of the bar and sit down. The music isnât quite as loud over here, so they can actually hear one another.
âWhat do you think?â Charles asks.
âItâs definitely different.â
âGood different or bad different?â
âGood, I think.â
Edwin turns around on his stool to take in the view of the place â so many people, most of them like him, celebrating it and having fun. He spotted a couple of men in one corner of the dance floor, pressed so close to each other they could be one. One leans in, and the other follows, and soon theyâre fully making out right there, in front of everyone. And no one cares. A few people around them cheer, a few whistle, but no one shouts. No one gasps in horror. No one throws any punches or slurs at them. Theyâre just allowed to be.
Edwin smiles and tries not to cry a little. How times have changed.
Charles taps him on the shoulder. He can feel it much more than he normally can through the single thin shirt heâs wearing.
âThereâs a bunch of music posters on the wall over there mate, do you mind if I go have a look?â
âOf course, Charles.â
âYou gonna be alright here?â
Edwin nods. Charles grins, and heads over to where he was indicating.
Edwin watches him take in the dozens of posters plastering the wall, the way he gets excited when he sees one he recognises and clearly takes a mental note of others he finds intriguing and wants to check out.
Then suddenly his view is blocked.
A man enters his view and sits on the stool Charles just left.
âHey handsome,â he says, smirking.
âWho are you?â
âStraight to the point, I like you. Iâm Joey, saw you sitting here all on your own and thought you might want some company.â
âIâm quite alright, thank you,â Edwin says.
Something about Joeyâs tone of voice and facial expressions reminds Edwin of a certain feline someone.
âYou not even gonna tell me your name?â
âEdwin,â Edwin replies, pointedly not returning the sultry eye contact or flirty smile.
âEdwinâŚâ Joey repeats. âSounds like an old Victorian lord or something. That when you died? Victorian times?â
Seriously, who does this guy think he is? And what kind of flirting is that? Who goes up to someone and asks when they died as a way of chatting them up?
âEdwardian, actually,â Edwin corrects, annoyed.
âWell, okay then, Edwardian. You one of those repressed types then?â
He bites his lip strangely after he says it. Edwin wishes for a second that ghosts could throw up.
âUmâŚâ
âYou into music?â a voice asks from beside Charles, making him jump.
He had been too caught up in analysing the wall of posters before him, mostly full of names heâd never heard before, mostly rock and pop artists.
He turns to find a woman Charles presumes is in her forties or fifties standing next to him. Sheâs wearing a loose-fitting green tank top and baggy jeans, and her shaggy brown hair comes just past her shoulders.
âUh, yeah,â Charles replies.
âWhat kind of genre?â
âI mean when I was alive I was mostly into ska but I loved rock too. Bowie, Queen, yâknow?â
âNeat choices. Bowie was a legend. My wife and I saw him in Birmingham in â95.â
âReally? I was meant to be going to see him on tour in March 1990 butâŚyeah. Wasnât expecting Iâd die three months before the concert.â
âIâm sorry, kid.â
âNah, itâs all good. Now Iâve gotâŚâ Charles looks over the womanâs shoulder at where Edwin was still sitting at the bar.
Is that someone sitting next to him? Even from this distance, Charles can tell somethingâs wrong. Edwin is doing the rubbing-his-fists-together thing he always does when heâs tense or stressed.
âSorry, Iâve got toâŚâ Charles indicates towards the bar.
âAll good. Have a good night!â
âYou too!â Charles shouts, already halfway to Edwin.
âHey,â he says to Edwin when he reaches him, wrapping an arm around his shoulder in a casual display of both affection and protection.
Edwin relaxes under his touch. He can always trust Charles to come and help.
âWhoâs this?â he asks.
âI could ask you the same,â says the man, sitting uncomfortably close to Edwin. The stool wasnât that close when Charles left it, thatâs for sure.
âCharles,â Charles says, then gets an idea. âEdwinâs boyfriend.â
Edwin gasps a little in shock. He knows Charles is lying to get Joey out of the way, but even just hearing the phrase from Charlesâs mouth makes his heart feel as though it skips a beat despite the fact it doesnât beat at all.
âHe never mentioned a boyfriend,â Joey says, still looking at Edwin in a way that made Charles kind of wish he had a weapon on him.
âProbably because him being clearly not interested shouldâve been enough of a sign,â Charles argues protectively.
âHe never said that, either.â
âWell, Iâm not,â Edwin finally speaks up.
Joey raises his eyebrows as if saying âoh really?â. Seriously, what is wrong with this guy? Edwin hasnât done a single thing that would indicate any kind of interest at all.
âOi,â Charles says, louder and almost a threat. âYou were making him uncomfortable, so why donât you just move along and bother someone else?â
Joey opens his mouth to argue, but something in Charlesâs face must convince him to give up because he gets up off the stool and walks away with a huff.
âSorry about that, mate,â Charles apologises, releasing his hold on Edwinâs shoulder and reclaiming his seat.
âItâs alright. Iâm glad you came; he was being ratherâŚforward. And completely improper.â
âI could tell.â
âCan you believe he asked me if, because I died in 1916, I am âone of those repressed typesâ? And tried to make it sound dallying?â
âWhat the fuck?â
Charles looks over Edwinâs shoulder in the direction Joey walked off; heâs still standing there, a short distance away from them, watching.
âHeâs still staring. Prick. Shouldâve brought my bat with me,â Charles says.
âCharles,â Edwin chuckles. âI donât need you to beat a man up for me.â
âWell I would. Heâs a right creep.â
âPerhaps we donât need to resort to violence just yet.â
âMaybe we should keep this up for a bit. Me pretending to be your boyfriend,â Charles suggests, draping his arm across Edwinâs shoulders again.
âHmm, that might be a good idea.â
âOh wait, unless you were actually trying to flirt with people. Just not that guy. If you were, thatâs fine I can just keep an eye on him.â
âCharles, my plan for tonight did not include flirting, I assure you. Iâm fine with you pretending. As long as you are.â
Edwin doesnât want to make Charles feel like he has to do this, especially given the already slightly awkward nature of their relationship after Edwinâs confession in Hell.
ââCourse, mate,â Charles replies decisively.
Well, they wouldnât have to do anything especially physical, Edwin doesnât expect. Just otherwise couple-like. And based on some of their clientsâ attitudes towards them, many people assume theyâre romantically together anyway, so this should work perfectly.
âThank you.â
âWanna go find the girls? Might help lose him if he canât see us in the crowd,â Charles proposes.
Edwin nods, and the two of them stand up from their stools at the bar.
It takes a while, but eventually they find Niko and Crystal on the dance floor. Theyâre both sweating and Nikoâs makeup has smudged, but they seem to be having a good time.
âEdwin!â Niko shouts excitedly upon seeing them. âAre you having fun?â
âDefinitely!â Edwin replies.
He leaves out the part about the stalkerish creep trying to flirt with him. Thatâs irrelevant to his enjoyment of the club as a whole.
âGood. Come dance with us!â
Niko drags him forward, and all four of them begin dancing in a very small space on the floor.
Edwin doesnât exactly know how to dance, not in the modern sense at least, but he soon learns that in this context, dancing is not exactly the art of movement that it usually is. Itâs more just many people crowding together like sardines and justâŚmoving; a lot of people much closer than others. Edwin wouldnât be surprised if there were some inappropriate activities going on amongst some of the people there.
He enjoyed the experience for a while, laughing with the three most important people in his afterlife, jumping around to music Edwin would absolutely despise in any other context. The closeness was fun for a short while, until it all started getting too much.
One clearly very popular song came on and even more people flooded to the floor, the crowd packing in even tighter to fit everyone, writhing against each other more than dancing. It all started to feel too familiar, and Edwin began to panic that any second a bloodied hand would reach out of the mass of people to grab him by the ankle, by the leg, by the arm, by the waist, and drag him down into-
âMate!â Charles says standing directly in front of him with his hands on his shoulders. âYou alright?â
Edwin can feel himself beginning to hyperventilate and shakes his head. Charles points to the side, and Edwin follows his finger to a quiet corner of the room.
Charles leads him out of the crowd, never letting go of both of his hands until theyâre fully out and can breathe.
âYou good?â he asks, worried. âYou seemed to disappear and then went all panicky.â
âYes,â Edwin says, getting his breath back. âIâm fine, that justâŚbrought back memories Iâd rather forget.â
âLust room?â
Edwin looks up at him in surprise. Sometimes he forgets Charles saw exactly what he went through in Hell. He nods.
âToo many people, too close together.â
âI get it. Youâre alright now, though, yeah?â he checks, looking Edwin over for any sign of hurt or discomfort.
âYes, Charles, Iâm fine.â
âGood.â
And it is good. Edwin fully relaxes now heâs with Charles away from the dance floor, and heâs still having a good time overall. At least until he spots an annoyingly familiar face watching them from the bar.
âHeâs back,â Edwin sighs.
Joey sits at the bar next to Niko and Crystal, who had left the crowd when Charles led Edwin out. Luckily, he doesnât seem to be paying the girls any mind. Unluckily, heâs still staring at the boys, as though trying to figure them out, or catch them doing something.
âFor fuckâs sake, can he not take a hint?â Charles groans.
âApparently not.â
Charles wracks his mind for something to do, a way to get that fucker to leave Edwin alone, until an idea pops into his head.
âKiss me,â he says, entirely seriously.
âWhat?â Edwin sputters.
âKiss me.â Charles repeats. âIf you want. I think heâs suspicious weâre not actually a couple so that should convince him to leave us alone. If you donât want to, we can think of something else but thatâs all I-â
âAre you sure?â Edwin cuts him off.
âYeah, just do it.â
Slowly, Edwin steps closer to Charles, giving him the chance to back out if he isnât comfortable â and also giving Edwin time to process that this is really happening. Itâs not really how heâd imagined kissing Charles for the first time, but if this is the only chance heâs ever going to get to do it, heâll take whatever Charles will give him.
Eventually, their lips meet, and the feeling is more than Edwin has ever dreamed of. He knows ghosts can properly feel one another, but the only time heâd ever kissed anyone was Monty, which felt like a barely-there pressure, so that was all he had to go on in his daydreams.
But thisâŚoh, this is wonderful. He can feel the tiny details of Charlesâs lips against his own â theyâre slightly chapped, and one part on his lower lip is slightly rougher from where he always bites it. Charlesâs hands wrap around Edwinâs waist to pull him closer and Edwin doesnât want the moment to end.
As it appears, neither does Charles. He kisses back with equal enthusiasm, rocking them almost back and forth on their feet with the force of it. Heâs never kissed another ghost before and now he has, he doesnât think he wants to stop. The weight of another person against him, the incomparable experience of truly feeling another personâs lips against his ownâŚit makes him feel alive, as though Edwin is breathing life back into his long-dead lungs.
Charles is the one who takes the kiss a step further, licking at Edwinâs lips as though begging for permission. Edwin opens his mouth gladly and eventually theyâre properly making out in a dark corner of the club. Charles manoeuvres them until Edwinâs back is against the wall. It would have hurt if he was alive, but heâs not, so he doesnât care.
One of Edwinâs hands moves up to cradle the back of Charlesâs neck and mess with the bottom of his hair, while the other goes to Charlesâs hips to pull him impossibly closer. As the kiss grows somehow more intense, the hand in his hair moves ever so slightly upwards until Edwin is lightly tugging on Charlesâs curls, and he lets out a soft moan into Edwinâs mouth, which only spurs both of them on.
The two of them lose track of time entirely, too lost in one another to care to remember this was only supposed to be an act, or to notice when Joey finally gives up and leaves the club, or to spot Niko and Crystal walking over to them with shocked expressions on their faces.
They only break apart when Crystal snaps her fingers. Reality comes flooding back to them, and they realise what just happened. They all but jump apart, Edwin desperate to make himself look presentable once more. He reaches up to fix his bow tie, forgetting he isnât even wearing one. Shit, one (very long) kiss and his brain seems to have stopped working altogether.
âGuys?â Niko says in shock, an awed grin plastered on her face.
âFucking finally!â Crystal says.
âIs he gone?â Charles asks.
How is he stringing words together right now? Edwin thinks.
âOh, thank fuck.â Charles continues when he canât spot Joey anywhere. âWe were faking it to get this creepy guy off Edwinâs ass- wait what do you mean, finally?â
âNothingâŚâ Crystal says, raising her hands in defense as if she never said anything at all.
âWeâre ready to go now,â Niko explains, her grin having morphed into more of a smirk.
âYes, I think we are, too,â Edwin manages, still slightly breathless from theâŚahem, wall encounter.
The four of them head to the exit, Edwin walking ahead with Niko while Charles walks with Crystal. Charles and Edwin say nothing to each other.
âThat was faking it?â Crystal hisses to him.
âYeah. I mean the kiss was real, obviously. But the rest was fake.â
âMhm, sure Charles,â she says, in a tone that says she really is not convinced, then speeds up a little to catch up with the other two.
âSo, Edwin, would you wanna come again?â
âNot often, but yes, I think I would. Though I doubt I would join you two in the dancing. I do like just watching people.â
Charles doesnât want to think about the strange feeling of happiness that floods over him at the thought of potentially pretending to be Edwinâs boyfriend again â not that he wishes for more creepy men to try and come onto Edwin, obviously. And he really doesnât want to think about the feeling of Edwinâs body pressed against his own, the feeling of his hand in his hair gently tugging, the feeling of their mouths moving against one another. But as much as he didnât want to, the memories and thoughts associated with them would not leave his mind, and he expected they wouldnât for a very long time.
Maybe he should rethink the whole not being in love with Edwin back thing.

in a sky full of stars, i think i see you
Christmas had always been both Edwin and Charlesâs favourite holiday, even when they were alive. Edwin because he loved the traditions, the decorations, the general joy of it all, and Charles because he loved giving gifts to people. Even if he didnât receive anything in return, he loved seeing peopleâs reactions to things he got for them. Also, Christmas was about one of the only times where he felt like he could relax in his own house. They always had family over for a few days, so his dad was less rough. For just a few days, he could pretend like they were a normal family.
But nothing compared to Christmas with Edwin.
He hadnât expected Edwin to love the holiday as much as he did, but it was amazing being able to show him the way traditions had changed since he was alive. They celebrated in their own special way every year, picking up little routines and rituals constantly.
Their Christmas was always a mixture of things Edwin loved when he was alive, things Charles loved when he was alive, and more modern things. Their office was decorated with both the holly and paperchains of Edwinâs childhood, and the brightly coloured lights and baubles that brought nostalgia for Charles. Theyâd play both classic carols and more modern hits on their record player. It was strange and a little all over the place but it was perfect and it was them.
Then, Crystal and Niko came into their afterlives and suddenly there were more people to celebrate with. Crystal raised an eyebrow at their strange little rituals at first, but eventually realised that they were just so true to the boys. Of course this would be how they celebrate.
This year specifically, since the relationship between the two of them had developed another layer if intimacy, yet another tradition had manifested itself in Charles and Edwinâs festive routine â mistletoe. There was a sprig hung from every doorway in the office, and the two took every possible opportunity to kiss beneath it. Edwin had always thought the idea a little silly when he was alive, but he hadnât considered it in the context of himself having someone he could openly love in that way to kiss under the shining white berries. Heâd always just been forced to sit there and cringe while his extended family members pretended that they hadnât noticed the plant before despite having already kissed beneath it several times in the past two hours. It was quite ironic, in retrospect, that he was now the one in their place seizing every opportunity to get his lips on Charlesâs, despite the fact he didnât really need an excuse to at all.
The girls had gone out to do their own celebrations on Christmas Eve, then crashed at the office for the night so they could all open gifts together at the crack of dawn â much to the insistence of Charles and Niko.
A case came up in the middle of the day that they all had to run out and solve, but for the most part, their Christmas was a fairly chilled one, the four of them all just playing games together in the office. Edwin scoffed at the terrible jokes in the crackers, and Charles once again got very sad he couldnât eat when Niko and Crystal brought in practically their entire kitchen cupboardâs worth of savoury snacks. Edwin vowed to find some spell that would allow ghosts to eat.
Eventually the girls fell asleep on the sofa, leaving Charles and Edwin practically alone in the office.
âItâs a surprisingly clear night,â Edwin noted, gazing out of the office window above the streets of London.
Brightly coloured lights shone in the surrounding streets, and they could quietly hear the music and chatter of the party going on in one of the blocks of flats across the road. Edwin looked up, away from the lights, and had an idea.
âI think this would be a perfect night for stargazing. Would you care to join me on the roof, Charles?â
âCourse, mate,â Charles replied.
Language was one of Edwinâs passions, and he would constantly correct people if they used a word incorrectly or at the wrong time. And yet, he never corrected Charles calling him mate despite their growing romance. Somehow he had managed to take a common moniker used between friends and turn it into the most romantic petname Edwin could imagine. It was the way he said it; so naturally, so proudly, so full of love and feeling. Besides, there was nothing to correct about it in the first place. They were mates â best mates â and always would be. No matter the changes their relationship went through, no matter the colour or shape of the feelings between them; at their core they would always be two best friends. Two boys who found each other in their worst moments, a light in the otherâs darkness, and felt nothing but love. Love â not just attraction - for the other person, just because of who they were. Edwin had always thought it was beautiful.
So when Charles called him mate, with that soft glint in his eyes and that smitten smile on his face, Edwin didnât question or correct. He just smiled back.
âIâll be out in a sec though, yeah? Iâve got an idea.â
âAn idea?â Edwin asked, intrigued.
âYeah, and itâs a surprise idea so you go sit up on the roof and Iâll meet you there.â
Charles pressed a soft kiss to Edwinâs cheek before ushering him out of the office.
Edwin took an unnecessary breath as he stepped out onto the roof of the abandoned building their office resided in, as though acclimatising to the cold December air despite being unable to feel its effects on his skin.
He looked up at the sky. From several storeys up, the light pollution wasnât quite as bad - although it was still central London, so that didnât really make much difference. Only a few constellations were visible directly above. Heâd always thought it was a shame, really, the fact that advancements in technology meant they were no longer able to observe the natural universe around them to quite the same degree.
Edwin had always loved stargazing. When he was alive, his family had bought him books about the stars for Christmas every year since he was a small child, and he was obsessed. He never really understood the astrological beliefs surrounding them â although he had become more intrigued after reading the book Monty gave him in Port Townsend. No, he was always more captivated by the science behind them; those huge spheres of energy roaring away lightyears away from Earth. It made him feel insignificant at times, but heâd become used to that. It was easier to accept his insignificance on a cosmic scale than to accept it on a much closer one.
Then he met Charles, and gradually his thoughts about the cosmos became much less about insignificance and more about how lucky they were that they existed. Knowing that there was so much out there, and yet here was the only place that life had been found, that a new kind of life could somehow begin even after death; it felt special.
He never felt insignificant when Charles was by his side.
As though aware Edwin was thinking about him â which he probably was, considering thereâs rarely a time Edwin isnât - Charles stepped onto the roof behind him. Edwin turned around to find him standing there with a pile of blankets and pillows in his arms.
âCharles,â Edwin chuckled, shaking his head slightly as he walked towards him.
âWhat?â
âWe do not feel the cold!â
âI know but, like, itâs the vibe innit? Snuggling up together under blankets and watching the stars.â
âYouâre quite the hopeless romantic, arenât you?â
âYep,â Charles grinned, stepping towards Edwin and handing him a few pillows from the pile.
They set their little spot up â one blanket on the ground to sit on with pillows against the wall â and sat beside one another, the other two blankets covering them both.
Edwin swore he felt a rush of warmth as he relaxed into the soft knitted material, but he was quite sure that was less to do with the blankets themselves and more to do with Charlesâs presence, leaning his head on his shoulder and cuddling up close. They were facing each other just a little, their hands clasped together in between them covered by the thick blanket.
âThis is nice,â Charles said, gently brushing his thumb over Edwinâs hand in the way he knew drove him a little insane with affection.
âHmm,â Edwin hummed in agreement.
They sat together in silence for a while, snuggled up to one another, until Charles turned his head just enough to whisper in Edwinâs ear.
âMake a wish,â he said.
âCharles, there arenât any comets,â Edwin smiled.
âMake one anyway. There's always a shooting star somewhere.â
He had a point.
âThe greatest wish I never even thought I was allowed to have has already come true. I donât know what else there is,â he said, looking down at the top of Charlesâs head on his shoulder.
âWell, I wish that every Christmas is as brills as this one.â
âYou know if you say it aloud it wonât come true?â Edwin moved his head away from Charles momentarily, questioning.
âNah. That doesnât count when itâs you.â Charles looked up into his eyes. âTelling you doesnât feel like revealing it to someone. Itâs like you already know anyway.â
Edwin just smiled.
âGo on then, whatâs yours?â
âHmm. I suppose...â Edwin thought for a moment. âI wish for an infinite bookshelf.â
âOh.â Charles laughed, taken aback.
âWhat?â
âSorry, I guess I was expecting it to be something about us.â
âI told you, I already have everything I could possibly wish for in that department,â Edwin said proudly.
âYou flirt,â Charles grinned, leaning up to kiss his cheek. âInfinite bookshelf would be pretty brills, though. Itâd be like my backpack, only way more organised.â
âWe could have several libraries worth of books and yet never run out of space in the office.â
âThatâd definitely make case research easier.â
âPrecisely. Which would leave us with more time for... other things.â
Charles moved out of the embrace but kept one arm around Edwinâs waist, his eyebrow raising with his smirk.
âOh yeah?â he teased. âWhat other things you thinking of?â
âYou know what things Iâm thinking of.â
âDamn, who wouldâve taken Edwin Payne for an insatiable horny teenager?â Charles said, he amusement evident in his voice.
Edwin laughed, a real open from-the-heart laugh that Charles had never heard around anyone but himself and the girls. âItâs you. You corrupted me,â he half-joked.
âCanât exactly say Iâm complaining.â Charles pulled him closer so that he could press light kisses to Edwinâs neck.
âBesides, I didnât only mean... that,â Edwin argued, his voice shaking slightly at the contact. âI also meant we would have more time for things like this,â he Charlesâs hand a light squeeze under the blanket.
âThis is definitely good, love,â Charles replied, squeezing back and shuffling somehow even closer, nuzzling his head into his neck.
They couldnât fall asleep, not really, but they got as close as they could; snuggled up against each other on the rooftop as the 25th of December ticked away into the 26th.
Theyâd stargazed on Christmas a few times before, the first time being December of 1990, back when theyâd barely known each other a year and had just set up the agency, operating out of a treehouse in an old womanâs back garden. Theyâd climbed on top of the wooden structure, and Edwin pointed out all the constellations they could see above the horizon. That night, there had been a shooting star passing overhead, and Edwin had wished on it. Heâd wished that Charles would stay with him for the rest of their afterlives. At the time, heâd thought it foolish and naĂŻve. Surely Charles would eventually move on, perhaps Edwin would â they couldnât spend the rest of eternity playing detective together, could they?
Well, thirty-four years on, Edwin was starting to believe that maybe that wish had come true, but it wasnât entirely down to the star.
Sure, their little Christmas routine changed over the years; but so had their existences, their relationship, the people around them. And no matter what changed, the holidays always brought the same warmth to the still hearts of two boys who may not have been given as many Christmases to live as they should have been, but more than made up for it in their afterlives, and would continue to do so for as long as there were stars in the sky to wish upon. i have 7 wips yet i wrote an entirely new fic woah what a surprise
anyway, my first arcane fic!!
pairing: jayce & viktor (can be read as platonic or romantic but there are hints at viktor having feelings)
rating: G
summary: Viktor was so used to people either just ignoring him or treating him like he constantly needed help. They never asked if he needed it, and it always felt condescending, as if just because his leg didnât work properly, he couldnât navigate life on his own â despite the fact he had literally fought his way out of the undercity and into the academy alone. But then there was Jayce, who on top of being a brilliant mind and a sweet person, treated his disability with genuine care, and asked if he needed help, and knew he was more than capable of so many things but just needed a little extra hand sometimes. Viktor loved him.
notes: since it's my first thing for the fandom, pls lmk if anything seems ooc i always wanna try and get these as in character as possible đ
on ao3!!

oh but you're good to me, baby
No one had ever loved Viktor like Jayce Talis did.
From the day they met, there had always been a strange sort of spark between them, a companionship and an understanding despite the differences in both of their lives. Obviously, it wasnât always understanding â sometimes Jayce would make unintentionally ignorant comments about the Undercity and its people that Viktor would have to educate him on, and quite often Viktor would intentionally insult Pilties and Jayce wouldâŚmostly agree with him, actually. He wouldnât outwardly deny most of them even if he didnât share the same view, anyway; he knew Viktor absolutely had a right to hate them for the conditions he had to grow up in.
Over six years, theyâd become such close partners that it was rare that one would be seen without the other â except on the occasion Jayce had to give a speech to the council, or attend one of their fancy galas. Jayce was Piltoverâs golden boy, and while both he and Viktor were angry that Viktor rarely got any credit for his work on Hextech, Viktor didnât exactly want the level of attention Jayce seemed to be constantly getting. He wanted to be remembered for his work, not praised like some sort of god. He could tell Jayce felt the same â he didnât particularly enjoy being the centre of attention, but he could cope with it better than Viktor. He always was the more outwardly social of the two.
With the way Jayce was constantly celebrated and showered with attention, it was nice to have days like the one they were currently having â both in their lab, working on their current Hextech project, doing what both of them loved most and feeling like they were still just barely graduated students of the academy sneaking around doing experiments Professor Heimerdinger wouldnât approve of.
Viktor looked up from his desk, and just sat watching Jayce for a few minutes. He was on the opposite side of the lab, standing in front of the chalkboard which was so full of notes that no one except for the two of them would ever be able to decipher what they were referring to. Jayce had one arm folded, the other with his chin in his hand in concentration, mumbling to himself as he tried to figure out an equation.
In his staring, he found himself thinking back to their early days as partners, only a few months after they managed to prove Hextech could actually work. Theyâd been given permission by the council to continue their studies and experiments, and were given a proper laboratory in the academy in which they could conduct them.
The day they moved into the lab had been stressful; moving books and papers and equipment that had previously been in Jayceâs old workshop â which the Kirammans had kindly been keeping safe for him. The constant moving had put a lot of physical strain on Viktorâs leg, and he all but collapsed into one of the lab benches when they finally made the last journey of boxes.
Heâd worn a compression brace on his right leg for as long as he could remember. He rarely bothered to take it off unless he was showering, or it needed to be cleaned. Since it was under his trousers, he didnât have to bother taking it off before bed every night. And it was usually comfortable enough.
It did tend to become irritating when heâd been on his feet for a while, though. It became sweaty and overwhelming and by that point, heâd rather take the pain.
He leaned down to lift up the leg of his trousers to take the brace off, but immediately winced as he leaned forwards, pain now spiking in his lower back. He had the cane, which definitely helped, but even with it, he often still got pretty severe back pain due to his uneven walking. He couldnât escape. He hated that it was something he was used to.
âDo you want a hand with that?â Jayce asked, putting down the scissors he was using to cut open one of the boxes and walking over to him.
âNo, no, I can manage,â Viktor replied, a little too harshly.
He was too used to people thinking he was broken and couldnât do simple things.
âI know you can, V,â Jayce said, not offended or surprised by his tone in the slightest, âbut itâs hurting your back.â
âItâs not,â Viktor insisted.
âI could hear you wincing from over there. I can help if you want.â
Viktor gave in, leaning back on the bench and giving his back a little relief.
âThank you,â Viktor sighed.
Jayce knelt on the ground next to him, lifting his trouser leg up and gently pulling the brace down his leg. Viktor didnât think theyâd ever been so physically close before, but he couldnât say he minded it.
âYou didnât have to do all of that heavy lifting, you know? I couldâve done it,â Jayce said.
âI would have felt useless if I was just sitting around here all day.â
âYou arenât useless,â Jayce reassured.
âI know. I was fine, though. Iâm very used to feeling like this at the end of the day, Jayce. Itâs kind of what comes with chronic pain.â
âIf youâre sure. Obviously I know you know your limits better than I do.â
âI am. Believe me, moving helps sometimes.â
âOkay. Iâm always here if you need a hand though, yeah? You just gotta ask.â
âThank you.â
Viktor was so used to people just ignoring him; and if they did acknowledge him they usually seemed intent on helping, though they didnât ask if he needed it. Heâd been approached by strangers while out in public who put their arm around him to try and stabilise him when his limp was more pronounced, and he was leaning on his cane more than usual. He knew at heart they were just trying to help, but it always felt condescending, as if just because his leg didnât work properly, he couldnât navigate life on his own â despite the fact he had literally fought his way out of the undercity and into the academy alone. To have someone like Jayce who genuinely cared, who wanted to help, who asked if he needed it and only gave it if he did, made his heart warm. He was very glad the man wasnât exiled from Piltover those few months ago.
âDo you have to do this every night?â Jayce asked, handing the elasticated fabric back to Viktor.
âI donât take it off to sleep often. Itâs not the most uncomfortable thing in the world, itâs justâŚgetting itchy right now.â
âI didnât even realise you were meant to keep it on for so long.â
âI only really need it on when Iâm putting pressure on it, itâs not like itâs on there to help it heal or anything. I wish it could do that. But, itâs effort to take it off so I usually just donât, unless itâs really necessary, like washing.â
âWell if you ever want me to do this again, just say, yeah? Your roomâs right next to mine, it really wonât be a big deal. Iâll always help you. Only if you want it, of course.â
That was the other part of the deal they struck with the council â while Jayceâs place at the Academy had not been reinstated, he had been given a room there next door to Viktorâs in order to be closer to their lab rather than several blocks away.
After that day, it became almost a routine. Viktor still didnât take the brace off all the time, but he did so more often, and Jayce would help him if it was getting uncomfortable. At first it started as something that only really happened if the pain in Viktorâs back was bad, but then it became a sort of ritual and Jayce was always the one who did it â even when the pain started getting somehow worse a year or so later and he had to switch from the compression brace to a structured metal one that he had to wear over his trousers and take off every night. It was more complex to operate than what was previously an extravagant sock, but Jayce did it anyway. And it was never out of obligation, or because he thought Viktor couldnât, or because he got some strange selfish sense of charity from doing so, but because Jayce genuinely cared and wanted to.
It also never felt like a big thing; it was never the topic of conversation during their nightly routine, it just became what they did every night. They would talk about other things, whether recounting the findings of the day in terms of their experiments or gossiping about other students at the academy they had met on occasion, or recalling childhood memories. Viktor showed him the toy boat heâd built when he was a child and kept in a drawer ever since, and Jayce was enamoured by the mechanics of it. Viktor could also tell he was intrigued by the engineering of the brace itself, albeit fairly simple in comparison to the technology they were working on â ever the scientist, was Jayce Talis.
After Jayce had finished figuring out his equation on the chalkboard â and loudly cheered when he finally worked it out, since heâd been trying for a few days now â the two of them decided to turn in for the night. It was getting late, and Jayce had to go and update Councillor Medarda and Professor Heimerdinger about their current progress early the next day.
So, they headed out of the lab, saying goodnight to Sky â a girl Viktor had known when he was a child who had become their assistant a few years prior â before heading towards Viktorâs room.
As usual, Jayce sat on the chair at the foot of the bed while Viktor sat on the edge, and Jayce leaned down to undo the buckles on the back of Viktorâs leg and slide the brace off his foot. It was always so strangely intimate, but neither of them had ever really brought it up. Theyâd become such close friends over the last six years, it was almost as though theyâd known each other all their lives, so nothing was weird or too much for either of them. By now, he wouldnât have it any other way. There was no Hextech without both him and Jayce. There was no Viktor without Jayce, anymore.
He'd been so supportive over the last few years, since Viktorâs mobility started to decline even further. Heâd been there when Viktor needed him physically, to hold on to while they walked through the street, but more than that, heâd been there to give Viktor a distraction. Theyâd achieved their best progress in their science when they were intently focused to stop Viktor from spiralling about everything his condition meant he couldnât do. Jayce was always there to remind him what he could â that his mind, even when not paired with his partnerâs, was utterly brilliant.
âIâll probably head back to the lab pretty early tomorrow,â Viktor said as Jayce stood the brace up against the bedside table, next to his crutch. âSo good luck with the Professor and Councillor Medarda.â
âThanks. Iâm sure itâll all go great, though. Weâre making good development with it.â
âWell thatâs definitely good, Mr. Man of Progress,â Viktor teased.
âShut up. âNight, V.â
âGoodnight, Jayce.â
With that, Jayce left the room and closed the door behind him.
Viktor stayed still for a while, just listening. He heard Jayceâs footsteps moving away from his bedroom door, but he was definitely heading back towards the lab, not towards his own room. His guess was confirmed when he heard mumbling. One voice was definitely Jayce, the other Sky. Then, he heard Skyâs lighter footsteps pass his door in the opposite direction.
Jayce had been heading back to the lab late at night often lately, and Viktor knew he was working on something in secret, but every time Viktor had brought it up, Jayce denied it, claiming he was only going back to tidy up before going to bed himself.
Viktor had a bad enough sleep schedule himself to know that most of the time when Jayceâs footsteps finally retreated back down the corridor, far too much time had passed for him to have just been tidying up.
He supposed he would find out eventually. He had enough trust in Jayce that the reason for him keeping it secret wasnât malicious, or because he was doing anything against their goal with Hextech. So, he tried to clear his mind, changed into his pyjamas and attempted to sleep.
A month or so later, Viktor was sitting at his desk in the lab, his magnifying goggles on as he analysed a hex crystal that was suspended on a small platform. They had successfully stabilised some, but there were strange behaviours in some of them, as if they had more Arcane energy than others. Before they could put the crystals to use in inventions for the public, they had to ensure they had a way of stabilising all of them. Perhaps it was something in the runic patterns-
Viktorâs thoughts were interrupted when the lab door burst open and Jayce came in, beaming. Victor spun around in his chair to face him.
âAre you alright, Jayce? Did something happen down in the forge?â
âNo, I just have a surprise for you,â Jayce replied.
âReally? What is it?â
âYouâll see later.â
He refused to say anything else about it, so Viktor got back to work immediately after relaying his current findings to his partner.
It turned out that later meant when they were heading to bed.
âIâll meet you in your room!â Jayce shouted across the lab before disappearing out into the corridor, dashing towards the forge.
Viktor chuckled, filing away his report with the rest of them, and then headed over to Skyâs desk. She seemed to be poorly masking a giggle.
âGoodnight, Sky,â he said.
ââNight, Viktor. Hope you enjoy whatever it is Jayce has for you,â she smiled.
Viktor nodded and left the lab. It was clear that Sky suspected there was something more going on between him and Jayce, and if Viktor was honest, he didnât blame her for her assumption. They certainly did act like an old married couple sometimes. And they constantly called each other partners in tones of voices that could easily be implying something more than lab partners. And then there was the whole Jayce going to Viktorâs room every night thing, and wow, did everyone around them think they were together? Funnily enough, Viktor didnât really think he minded what they thought. Technically they were wrong, but it wasnât like Viktor himself hadnât entertained the possibility several times over the years. He simply assumed Jayce wasnât into men. Which was fine.
Viktor sat himself down on the edge of his bed, awkwardly waiting for Jayce to return. In the meantime, he reached behind himself to unclasp his back brace and remove it, placing it beside his bed. He hated that he had to practically hold himself together with metal and plastic, all because his leg didnât form correctly in the womb. What would he be doing if he didnât have his condition? If he had full physical freedom?
He barely entertained the thought. It didnât matter because it would never happen, unless Hextech managed to create a miracle. But what was the point in imagining anyway, when he had all he ever really wanted in life right in front of him. He was a scientist, using his mind and his inventions to make a difference in peopleâs lives, even if the effects werenât totally evident yet in the people he wanted to help the most. And he had a partner he could never even have created in a dream â a man who shared his passions for science and invention and magic and supporting those who needed it.
He hated what he didnât have, but was more than pleased with what heâd done with what he did.
At that moment, Jayce entered his bedroom, closing the door behind him.
âSo, I may have been working on something,â he said, before turning to face Viktor and holding something out to him.
Viktorâs eyes widened as he realised what was in Jayceâs hands â a new leg brace.
âJayce, what is this?â
âThe project Iâve been working on! Sorry I didnât tell you about it, I wanted it to be a surprise. The brace youâve got now has got all those confusing buckles and shit, and youâve told me enough times how uncomfortable it can get. I donât know how youâre meant to deal with all that on your own when youâre already struggling, but I think I figured it out!â
Jayce reached out, flipping the brace over in Viktorâs hands, revealing something in the centre of it â a bright blue glowing vaguely spherical shape.
âA hexcrystal?â
âYeah, I know we said we were gonna properly brainstorm ideas for them soon, but I hope you donât mind I did this one. All you have to do to take it off is take the crystal out! It unclasps itself.â
Jayce demonstrated, plucking the crystal from its mini cage within the structure of the brace, and it instantly opened.
âWanna try it out? It might need a few tweaks, obviously Iâm not the best person to try it out.â
âOf course.â
Jayce smiles, kneeling down beside Viktor to unclasp and take off the old brace, replacing it with the new Hextech-imbued one.
âHowâs that?â Jayce asked.
Viktor grabbed his crutch from beside his bed and stood up, pacing around the room a few times. He looked over at Jayce, who was staring expectantly in the same way he always did when they tested out something they both really hoped would work.
âSo?â
âI think itâs better than the old one! Itâs helping my leg but also, I can barely feel that itâs there,â Viktor noted, looking down at his leg to admire the craftsmanship.
âThatâs another one of the features! The brace itself sooths the skin where it sits, so it shouldnât get as uncomfortable for long-term wear,â Jayce explained.
Viktor looked up at him, a grin growing on his face.
âYou, Jayce Talis, are a genius.â
He moved the few steps across the room it took to reach Jayce, and pulled him into a hug.
âThank you,â he said, practically into Jayceâs shoulder due to their height difference.
âNo problem,â Jayce replied, seeming relieved that Viktor liked it. Then he inhaled a little in a panic. âBut I donât want you to think I did this because I donât wanna help you anymore, itâs not a burden or anything, I just know you donât particularly like asking for help and it would just make life easier for you and-â
Viktor pulled away from the hug, regaining his balance with his crutch.
âJayce. I know. Even just the fact youâve done this for me told me that.â
Jayce smiled. The two of them headed back over to the bed, and Viktor reached down to test the release mechanism. It worked immediately, practically falling off his leg. He laughed a little at the ease of it all, lifting the brace up to really take a look at the details. There was a little cog engraved into the side of it â not unlike the one that had been the first thing touched by Hextech when they first got it working.
âSentimental bastard,â Viktor chuckled.
âI thought it was fitting,â Jayce replied.
âSeriously though, Jayce, do you know how good this will be for people in the undercity? If we could adapt it, for different injuries and conditions, this could be huge!â
âWell, I have started some concepts for a spinal brace version, it shouldnât be too difficult,â Jayce said.
âYou are brilliant.â
âI guess now we just have to concentrate on fully stabilising every crystal that gets made, this is one of the only ones weâve perfected so far.â
âWeâll get there. I think weâre getting close with that one.â
Their entire goal with Hextech had always been to improve lives, and if there was one thing Jayce Talis had proven he could do, it was just that. Not only was the entire city progressing because of Hextechâs work, Viktor was a living example of Jayceâs talent specifically â he certainly felt more fulfilled than he ever had before meeting Jayce, despite his declining health. He had someone who cared for him, he had a purpose, he was loved. And it made him feel so alive.
very late but here's my prompt fill for @paynelandpromptfest day 3!

it's tradition, crystal!
Crystal couldnât take them much longer. Well, she could, and would, but that didnât mean sheâd enjoy it.
âReally, Charles?â she sighed after walking into the office with a cup of hot chocolate to find Charles hanging yet another sprig of mistletoe up, slotting the ribbon tying it together under one of the slats in the ceiling above Edwinâs chair.
âWhat?â Charles asked innocently.
âThis whole room is practically a mistletoe forest!â
âItâs dĂŠcor, Crystal!â
âDĂŠcor that also just so happens to be an excuse for you to kiss your boyfriend every ten seconds while weâre on case research!â
âI dunno what youâre talking about, itâs just pretty,â Charles argued, his mouth curling up into a smirk.
âYouâre unbelievable. When I told you you two are like a dead married couple on acid, I didnât think it could get worse.â
Charles grinned, giggling a little.
She loved them, really. Of course she did. And she was always the first person to step to their defense if a client with outdated views â or one who was just a bit of a dick â said anything about them. Only she was allowed to bully her best friends like that.
At that moment, Niko and Edwin walked into the office, both laughing about something.
âSuccessful trip?â Charles asked, having just jumped down from Edwinâs chair and leaned back against the desk.
âYes, I believe it was. Maggieâs antique shop is always a delight,â Edwin said, his brown overcoat disappearing into thin air.
âAnd I dragged him to HMV,â Niko smiled, as she placed her tote bag down, then took her own coat off and hung it on the stand next to the front door.
âShe did.â
âAces.â
Edwin strode across the room and took his usual seat behind the desk, placing the knickknacks he bought in the bottom drawer.
âHey, mate,â Charles said as he looked back up.
âYes?â
Charles pointed to the ceiling above Edwin, smirking.
âOh. Thatâs interesting. Well then, I think we both know what we have to do now.â
âOh yeah?â Charles teased, leaning closer.
Edwin pulled him in by his braces and crashed their lips together.
Niko giggled. Crystal faked gagging.
âI thought you said you wanted to get straight back into researching the Graveyard Goblin case when you and Niko got back?â Crystal asked, her arms folded.
âOf course. But thereâs always time for mistletoe,â Edwin replied, finally moving away from Charlesâs lips.
âItâs tradition!â Charles grinned.
âIt is tradition, Crystal,â Edwin agreed.
Crystal scoffed in amusement. It was almost funny seeing Edwin like this. He was usually so annoyed at distractions to their cases, but since it got colder and the festive decorations went up, he was much more relaxed â and much more lenient about taking breaks to indulge in his boyfriend. Charles had told Crystal that Edwin had always adored Christmas, so maybe that was it. She had to admit, it was difficult to get too annoyed about anything when there were brightly coloured lights strung around the room, and a little snowman plush smiling at them from one of the bookshelves.
That didnât mean she was going to let them off that easily, though.
Over the last few months, Crystal had gained much more control and understanding of her newly realised psychic abilities. Edwin had been helping her delve into her subconscious, exploring the extent of her powers â and through their little sessions, he had also taught her some magic.
He had only taught her a few novelty spells, just to get her started, but one of them had been perfect for the situation at hand. Perhaps if Edwin didnât want to be pranked, he shouldnât have told Crystal how to cast such prank-worthy magic.
She had to do a little extra reading herself to figure out how to adapt the spell to this specific circumstance, but that wasnât too difficult, and within a week her plan was set â and she had a sprig of enchanted mistletoe.
âYou coming, Crys?â Charles called from the top of the staircase of the office building.
âI just totally fucked up my makeup!â Crystal lied, shouting back from the bathroom. âYou guys go on without me, Iâll meet you at the cafĂŠ!â
âYou sure?â
âYeah, you three go!â
ââKay, weâll see you there!â
Crystal smiled to herself in the mirror. It felt good to be enacting a harmless prank for once. From what sheâd learned from the memories David had stolen from her, most of the tricks she pulled had ended in at least one person getting hurt in the process. It made her so angry, and guilty. How could she have done that? How was the person who did all those terrible things her?
She shook the thoughts away. No. She wasnât that girl anymore.
When she was sure Charles Edwin and Niko would be halfway down the street by now, she made her way down the stairs and hung up the mistletoe in the main doorway to the building.
Now to wait. And have a nice day out without stressing about cases.
It was a nice day out. Crystal caught up with the others at a small cafĂŠ, which was hidden in one of the more supernatural parts of central London and run by shapeshifters.
The four of them had found a booth, Niko and Crystal sitting opposite Edwin and Charles. Crystal could tell the boys were holding hands underneath the table and found herself smiling at them. She really was glad they finally got their shit together â it was a little easier to deal with the old-married-couple-ness when they were actually both aware of their feelings. Aside from holding hands in public more often and disappearing occasionally while out on jobs to make out in an alleyway though, not much had really changed between them. They were still two best friends above everything else â just best friends who happened to kiss annoyingly often, and put mistletoe around every inch of the office as an excuse to do so.
After theyâd all had hot chocolates at the cafĂŠ â including Charles and Edwin, since this cafĂŠ had recently come up with recipes that ghosts could enjoy too, leading to a huge surge in business â the four of them ventured to Leicester Square to look around the Christmas market. Crystal and Niko got hot dogs for lunch while Charles and Edwin were over by the huge Christmas tree, eatingâŚeach otherâs faces, it would seem. A female ghost was watching them in a mix of awe and mild scandal â based on her outfit, the girls guessed she died somewhere in the 1950s. Crystal chuckled.
Soon, it was getting late, so the group headed back to the office. Crystal had told Niko about her plan while Charles and Edwin were off on one of their little dates in the afternoon, so the two of them hung back behind the boys to get the best view of the action.
âWell would you look at this?â Charles said as they approached the entrance to the building, spotting the mistletoe hanging in the doorway.
âCharles,â Edwin said fondly, âwhen did you have time to put that there?â
âThis one wasnât me!â
âMhm,â Edwin hummed, unconvinced.
âIâm serious! It wasnât! It mustâve been Ethel!â
Ethel was a psychic who lived in the space directly below the office and ran a spiritual shop, doing tarot readings for local ghosts. Crystal wouldnât have put it past her to pull something like this, which is why she decided to hang the mistletoe there in the first place: the boys wouldnât question it.
âWell, you know what weâve gotta do.â
âActually, Charles, I do not believe I do know,â Edwin teased.
âCome here.â
Charles held Edwinâs cheek in one hand, gently pulling him in to softly brush their lips together.
It would have been a really sweet momentâŚif the mistletoe didnât open itself up the second their lips connected, raining a strange substance over their head that covered both of them in glittery spectral goo.
Crystal immediately burst out laughing, watching as the boys slowly moved away from each other, wiped the bright purple ooze from their faces and turned to face her.
âYou should see your faces!â she laughed, and Niko joined in, giggling at the sight before them. âGod, I wish you two would show up on camera, this would be priceless!â
âVery funny, Crystal,â Edwin said, clearly intending to be sarcastic but the slight amusement was not completely hidden in his voice.
âThis is hilarious,â Crystal confirmed.
âIt is pretty funny,â Charles giggled, turning to face Edwin, his eyebrows creasing in amusement.
How could Edwin not find it funny when Charles was looking at him like that, his face covered in whatever the bright purple substance was that Crystal had cursed the plant with? He was soon smiling, too, reaching up to wipe some of it away from Charlesâs cheek.
âThis is payback for the number of times Iâve had to witness you two being all lovey-dovey the last few weeks,â Crystal grinned, gesturing between them with her hands.
The four of them laughed, and didnât stop until theyâd climbed all four staircases and got inside the office.
âThis was a very good prank, Crystal,â Edwin said.
âThank you,â Crystal replied proudly.
âButâŚâ Edwin continued, a smile growing on his face that made Crystal a little scared. âIf you thought this would stop us being â how did you put it â all lovey-dovey, you are sorely mistaken.â
With that, Edwin strode across the office, grabbed Charles by the face and kissed him soundly despite both of them still being covered head to shoulders in gunk.
âSeriously guys? Come on!â Crystal groaned.
Sheâd come to accept by now that there was no escaping them. Even with enchanted purple goo.

Chapter 3
Mind-Niko didnât seem like she was going away any time soon. It had been two months now, and she still gave commentary whenever Edwin did, well, anything really.
When he was reading his books on supernatural creaturesâŚ
âThat thing is so cool! I mean, itâs evil, but it looks cool!â
When he was reading detective comics with Charles at nightâŚ
âIf you like this, thereâs this one anime I watched when I was younger that you would love!â
When he was mindlessly sketching in his notebookâŚ
âIs that me? Edwin, thatâs so pretty!â
When he was walking down the streetâŚ
âIâve always wanted to visit London! Itâs such a different city to Osaka.â
Heâd slowly been getting used to it, growing familiar with that strange tiny ache where his heart should be whenever he imagined her talking. Theyâd even had full conversations inside his head, Niko mentioning things Edwin didnât even remember finding out about her. It made him sad that he didnât remember, but he wasnât too worried about it, really. He knew everyone coped differently with grief and loss, and this must just be one of the ways his mind compartmentalised those emotions.
Heâd never really lost anyone as close to him as Niko was. The only people in his family who had died while he was alive were one of his uncles, whom he barely knew since he joined the military when Edwin was only four years old and was one of the first to enlist when the Great War broke out â and one of the first to die â and his Great Aunt Araminta. His auntâs death caused him more grief than his uncleâs, but that was mostly because heâd been there when she died. Theyâd been sitting together on the sofa at her house when he was twelve years old, and half-way through giving him one of her usual pieces of cryptic wisdom, she dropped to the ground lifeless, at age 101. But still, he wasnât all that close to any of his family really. Not as close as he had become with Niko, despite their short time knowing one another. So, of course he would have a strange reaction to having to deal with her sudden death. It wasnât impossible for his brain to have conjured up this mental version of her to cope.
At least, thatâs what heâd thought until the things Niko was saying changed slightly. She was still giving her thoughts on everything that happened around him, but occasionally she would say something different, something that didnât make sense.
He could be doing nothing, merely sitting at his desk or on the sofa or at the library, and Niko would say something like:
âIâm on my wayâ
âIâll be back to you soon Edwin, I promise.â
âI wonât be too long now!â
Not only was Mind-Niko speaking in his brain as though she was with him in the room, she was now claiming that she was coming back? That was impossible. That sounded less like a coping mechanism, and more like something that would make him feel even worse. Edwin wouldnât have been surprised if that was what was happening, his thoughts hadnât all been kind to him over the years, but it was what made him start thinking maybe there was something else at play here; something even more supernatural than his confused, grieving mind.
That is how his research began for what he was calling The Case of the Cerebral Companion. It was a different case to any the agency had investigated in the past â primarily because Edwin didnât tell the rest of the agency about it. He did his research in private, having not even told Charles or Crystal about the voice in the first place. Heâd visit the library, dig out books from the dustiest corners of the bookshelf, visit magic shops â all whilst Charles and Crystal were out or otherwise preoccupied. That had been a common occurrence as of late. Charles would often spend time at Crystalâs flat, then pointedly refuse to elaborate on what they did while he was there when prompted. It was always âOh, nothing much, mate, just hanging out yâknow?â or âJust shopping, I know youâre not really into that sort of stuff.â Edwin didnât pry any further. He likely didnât want to know, and besides, if he continued asking questions about Charles had been up to, Charles might start asking questions about what Edwin had been doing whilst he was out.
Edwin had a close call with the keeping-his-case-secret thing a week in. Heâd gotten distracted reading in silence, having not heard Nikoâs voice in several hours, and hadnât noticed that it was 10pm â the time Charles had told him he would be back from Crystalâs.
Charles walked through the mirror into the office with a soft whooshing sound, while Edwin still had his notebook and several ancient texts laid out across his desk. He didnât have chance to put it all away before Charles turned to him.
âWoah, what are you up to?â he asked.
âNothing, Charles, no need to concern yourself.â
Charles could see right through him. As always.
âSure, mate,â Charles said, taking the book from Edwinâs hand, much to his protest. âThe Treasury of Telepathic and Psychic Phenomena?â he read from the cover. âNever seen this one before, mate, did you buy it recently? The cases weâre working on arenât anything to do with this, are they?â
âItâs my own personal research,â Edwin said, reaching for the book.
Charles handed it back, flopping down onto the sofa as his coat and red jacket disappeared into thin air.
âWhy, though?â
âOne can always make use of new supernatural knowledge, Charles. You never know when it might come in handy,â he reasoned.
âHmm,â Charles replied, clearly knowing there was something Edwin wasnât telling him.
âAlsoâŚhaving a psychic around has made me more interested in researching similar abilities and creatures,â Edwin explained, not entirely a lie. His reading hadnât given him much help with the Niko situation, but it certainly hadnât been useless. âSome of these beings have different effects on other psychic creatures, this information may be crucial in to protecting Crystal if we ever come into contact with any of these in future.â
âOh,â Charles said, seemingly taking that explanation as the whole truth. âThat makes sense, wouldnât want her to get into any more trouble like that after everything with David.â
âPrecisely,â Edwin said, closing the books on his desk and returning them to their relevant shelves.
He could feel Charlesâs eyes on him as he moved.
âAre you sure youâre alright, mate? Youâve seemed different these last few weeks.â
âReally? How so?â Edwin didnât turn to look at Charles.
âYouâve beenâŚquieter. Like thereâs something you need to talk about but donât wanna for some reason.â
Curse Charles Rowland and his impeccable ability to read Edwin like a book. He finally turned to face him.
âLook, I know thereâs still a lot of emotions, afterâŚâ Charles trailed off. âBut you really can talk to me about anything, you know. If you want.â
âThank you, Charles. I do know youâre always there, but I assure you, I am fine.â
âSure?â
âPositive.â
âAlright then.â
With that, Edwin returned to putting his books back on the shelf and Charles started to relax slightly on the sofa.
Edwin hoped whatever it was that was putting Nikoâs voice in his head wasnât going to be causing him too many problems any time soon; his research didnât really seem to be getting him anywhere. Heâd found creatures that could get into the brain and send messages via the subconscious, but the voice was never a familiar one, and these creatures were always immediately violent, forcing the host to do terrible things. That was not what was happening to Edwin. Mind-Niko hadnât been in any way threatening. He couldnât even imagine her sweet kind voice being anything of the sort. And besides, these creatures could only access the living plane, not the spectral.
âWhat are you, Niko Sasaki?â Edwin thought to himself.
âIâm me, silly,â Niko giggled.

the case of the halloween party
âDo you think Charles and Edwin celebrate Halloween?â Niko asked, lounging on the floor of the office while Crystal was on the sofa, her laptop propped open on her lap.
The boys had gone out âto the libraryâ to do what they called âprivate ghost researchâ â but both Crystal and Niko knew that was just their code phrase for a date â leaving the girls to their own devices back at the office. Niko had been reading but her attention span had depleted several minutes ago, while Crystal was trying to win a bid for a cursed teacup someone was trying to sell on eBay.
âI dunno. Wouldnât that be a bit weird? Spooky supernatural beings celebrating a human-made spooky supernatural holiday?â
âI think it would be even better as a ghost,â Niko commented. âYou could actually, properly scare people.â
âTrue. I wouldnât exactly have taken Edwin for a Halloween kind of guy though.â
âMaybe we can try and do something with them! Weâve only got two weeks left! I think we can convince them to dress up, at least.â
âGood luck with that,â Crystal chuckled.
âOh my god! We could go as Mystery Inc.!â Niko sat upright, clearly already making plans.
âAh, umâŚIâd love to Niko, but I kind of already had my costume planned.â
âOh. Do you already have plans for the day?â
âNot really. A lot of the clubs around here do Halloween nights so I was probably just gonna go to one of those if we werenât busy. Iâd rather do something with you guys though, clubs are no fun on your own.â
âWhatâs your costume plan, then?â Niko asked.
âWell, I used to be really into cosplay and-â
Niko cut her off.
âYou were into cosplay?â she asked incredulously.
âYeah?â Crystal shrugged.
âI thought you were likeâŚa typical mean girl?â
âWell, I was a typical mean girl who happened to love cosplaying characters from video games.â
Niko stared at her girlfriend open-mouthed, her eyes wide.
âIâm in love with you,â she said simply.
Crystal laughed.
âI think youâve mentioned that before.â
âHow have you never told me you used to cosplay?â
âIt just never came up, I guess,â Crystal chuckled.
âSo, who are you dressing as?â
âOh, just this character from a pretty niche game.â
âWhat game?â
âYonda.â
âYou play Yonda? I love that game!â Niko had moved forwards and was sitting beside Crystal on the tiny sofa.
âReally?â
âYes!â Niko replied excitedly. âAyumi was like...my lesbian awakening!â
Crystalâs face morphed into a smirk. âWellâŚâ
âNo. Youâre not.â
âMhm,â Crystal hummed, teasingly.
âOh my god Crystal I need to see this right now,â Niko all but shrieked.
âYouâll just have to wait til Halloween babe,â Crystal said, leaning forward to press a kiss to Nikoâs lips.
âUghhhh,â Niko groaned, just as the mirror rippled and Charles and Edwin stepped through it.
âWhatâs going on?â Charles asked, perching himself on the arm of the sofa next to Niko.
âOh, Crystal and I were just discussing Halloween costumes.â
âCostumes?â Edwin asked, the tone of his voice somewhere between confused and ever so slightly judging.
âYeah? Donât tell me youâve never dressed up for Halloween!â Niko sat upright on the sofa.
âIâve been trying to get him to for years but he just refuses,â Charles complained, shaking his head slightly.
Niko jumped up from the sofa and stepped towards Edwin.
âEdwin, you have to!â
âI was under the impression that this strange tradition of dressing up was only for events like parties. Iâm afraid I donât see the point of it when we have no party to attend,â Edwin explained.
âWe can have our own!â Niko waved her arms in the air a little, turning to face the others to see their reactions.
Crystal had a smile on her face but reluctantly asked, âWho would we even invite, Niko?â
âJenny!â Niko said, pointing to one finger as though counting.
Everyone looked at her expectantly, waiting for the rest of the hypothetical guest list. Jenny had moved her shop to London but she was still about the only person any of the group really knew.
âOkay I guess itâs just Jenny but still! I could bake! We could decorate the office! Itâd be fun!â
Who could resist Niko Sasaki when she looked so excited and full of joy? Sure, it wouldnât be much of a typical party, but it could be a celebration in their own way, so everyone eventually agreed that they would have a gathering on Halloween night. Edwin still insisted they kept the agency open just in case â there never had been a Halloween without a strange new case to crack in the many years they had been working together.
As expected, Niko got very into the party planning. She was planning on baking enough snacks to feed a small army â including finding a recipe and enchantment for biscuits and sweets ghosts could eat thanks to Tragic Mick. She and Edwin had been crafting decorations while Charles and Crystal went out to buy supplies.
âSo what do you want to dress as?â Niko asked, cutting out skull-shaped bunting.
âIâm not sure. I donât think I want to dress too differently, if possible. The idea is still a little silly to me, I must admit.â
âEveryone dresses up on Halloween, Edwin. Itâs the one day a year where cosplaying is normalised â expected, even! But if you want to keep your style as much as you can, I think I have an idea.â
âWhat is it?â
âThatâs a surprise,â Niko grinned. âYou trust me, yeah?â
âOf course,â Edwin replied sincerely.
The surprise didnât last very long. Merely one day later, Niko returned to the office with inspiration for Edwinâs outfit to show him, and he wasnât as against the idea as she expected him to be. Crystal was there too, and was as excited about the costume as Niko was. But they all agreed to keep it as a secret from Charles â who was being very secretive over his own idea anyway.
Soon enough, Halloween arrived. The office was decorated with a mixture of lovingly crafted handmade decorations and ornaments bought from shops. Nikoâs paper skull bunting hung across the doorframe and across the blank wall between the games closet and the desk. She had also made bats to hang from the ceiling by string. The four of them had carved pumpkins the day prior, to varying degrees of precision, which all sat along the windowsill. Edwin had intricately folded several little origami pumpkins and placed them on the bookshelves, while tiny plastic ornaments of skulls and bats and witchesâ hats sat amongst them. A string of brightly coloured lights shaped like skulls were suspended across the window.
The largest of the decorations were two plastic hanging skeletons, which hung either side of the door. They had been plain when Crystal bought them, but she and Niko had crafted a tiny bow tie and book for one of them, and an earring, backpack and cricket bat for the other. Edwin seemed sceptical about the mini him-and-Charles, but grew fond of them after seeing Charlesâs grin when Crystal hung them up.
The office looked different, but somehow the atmosphere hadnât really changed â after all, it was the permanent residence of two ghosts in the first place.
It was 5pm, and the girls were currently both in the bathroom getting into their costumes, while the boys waited in the main room of the office, both still in their usual outfits.
âSo like, you really never did anything?â Charles asked.
âCharles, Iâve told you several times over the years. When I was alive, Halloween wasnât as much of a deal as it was now. It was a childish holiday. A few of the boys at school would sneak out to the cemetery at night, or play games in the dormitories, but people rarely dressed up or had parties like you do now.â
âRight. Sorry. I mean, it wasnât like a huge thing when I was alive â not for my family, anyway. My dad thought it was stupid, so even if my friends did have a party I could never go. It always looked so much cooler in America, like it is in films and stuff.â
âHmm,â Edwin hummed.
âSoâŚwhatâs your costume?â Charles asked.
Heâd been trying to get Edwin to tell him for a week, but he didnât budge, insisting it was a surprise.
âIâm not telling you,â Edwin replied, a smug smirk on his face.
âYouâre evil.â
âOh really? Because I seem to remember you saying something different when you were kissing me ten minutes ago.â
âOi!â Charles grinned.
The sound of giggling echoed through the bathroom door, and both ghosts turned towards it.
âSeriously, what are they doing in there?â Edwin asked, folding his arms.
âI dunno, mate. Girls and bathrooms, innit? They always go in pairs and take forever and come out giggling like maniacs.â
âSo strange.â
âYup.â
âHow long does it take to change clothes? Theyâve been in there for nearly an hour.â
Charles stepped forwards and knocked on the door.
âHey, uh, are you two good in there? Youâve been in there ages,â he said.
âWeâre fine,â Niko laughed.
âYou better not be snogging!â
âCharles you canât say anything, we know you were making out with Edwin like ten minutes ago.â
Charles opened his mouth to argue but ultimately gave up. âOkay fine, shut up,â he said instead.
More laughter erupted from the door, and Charles gave up, walking back over to the desk.
It was several minutes later when the door to the tiny bathroom finally opened. Charles and Edwin stood up straight, ready to see the girlsâ outfitsâŚ
âŚonly to find the two of them standing there with white sheets over their heads, holes cut out of the faces so their eyes could be seen.
Charles snorted, but Edwin didnât seem as amused. Perhaps if you looked closer thoughâŚmaybe there was a slight smirk hidden there on his face. Maybe.
âVery funny,â he said sarcastically.
âWeâre ghosts!â Niko said, giggling.
âYes, I can see that, Niko.â
âCome on, itâs a little funny!â Crystal argued.
âFine,â Edwin gave in, letting that tiny smirk be more obvious on his face.
âAnyway, these arenât our real costumes. Donât worry,â Niko said, and both she and Crystal pulled the sheets from their heads and threw them onto the sofa.
Niko had the more recognisable costume of the two â a bright orange turtleneck and matching socks, along with a short red skirt. What with her usual bright monochromatic wardrobe choices, the other three had seen every main part of the outfit before many times. What they hadnât seen before were the large-rimmed glasses that rested on her nose, or the short brown wig she wore that seemed to conceal her bright white hair so well, it was as if it wasnât even there beneath it.
âVelma!â Edwin said, smiling.
âYeah!â
Then the boys turned to Crystal, and both of their faces morphed into confusion.
âYou guys have no idea who I am do you?â she laughed.
âIâm afraid we donât.â
âWasnât expecting you to, donât worry. Iâm Ayumi from Yonda.â
âAre those words?â Edwin asked, one eyebrow raised.
âItâs a video game,â Niko explained.
âOh, nice! Well, you look great. Both of you,â Charles said.
âThank you,â Niko smiled.
âRight, now itâs your turn,â Crystal turned to the boys, a smile on her face.
âDo we really have to?â Edwin complained.
âYes!â Niko exclaimed, ushering him into the bathroom and closing the door behind them.
Since the boys didnât exactly get changed into their costumes, each had one of the girls there to help them alter their appearances, especially since they also didnât have reflections. So, Niko joined Edwin in the bathroom whilst Crystal helped Charles in the office.
Edwin managed to get his costume right fairly quickly â Niko had made him practise whenever they got the chance and were away from the other two. Niko looked him up and down, smiling to herself.
âPerfect!â she grinned.
He was dressed as a traditional vampire, and thanks to some convincing from the girls (otherwise known as Nikoâs puppy eyes â Edwin really ought to learn to say no to her), heâd also manifested a pair of fangs. He couldnât alter his own body, but heâd managed to create a pair of plastic ones that fitted perfectly to his canine teeth.
âOh my god you look so good!â Niko said, using a finger to dab some fake blood onto the corner of his mouth, so it dripped down his chin.
âNiko, is this strange sticky concoction really necessary?â
âYes! How will anyone know youâre a spooky vampire without fake blood?â
âI think itâs fairly obvious from the rest of the outfit. And the fangs,â Edwin chuckled.
âOh well. It looks cooler.â
Edwin wasnât going to argue with her. Niko shuffled around him in the tiny bathroom before she reached the door. She knocked on it a couple of times.
âHey, is Charles ready?â
âNearly, just finishing up hisâŚnearly!â Crystal replied from the other side of the door.
âYay!â Niko grinned, placing her hands together in front of her like she was running some evil scheme. Edwin had come to fear that look.
âReady!â Crystal called.
Niko opened the bathroom door, and both of them stepped out.
Edwin froze when he saw Charles. Charles seemed to freeze too, the two of them just staring at one another open-mouthed.
âPick your jaws up off the floor, you two,â Crystal said, her arms folded in front of her.
âShh let them ogle,â Niko said, that grin still plastered across her face.
In terms of style, Edwinâs costume wasnât too dissimilar from what he usually wore; the blue sweater vest was replaced by a red waistcoat, and a frilly collar took the place of his bow tie. His trousers were black instead of pinstripe grey, and his brown coat was now black and had a higher, upturned collar. It was different enough to be considered a costume, but similar enough that it wasnât too uncomfortable, and he wasnât revealing any more skin than usual.
The same could not be said for Charlesâs costume. He wore what appeared to be a teal surgical gown, only unlike actual surgical gowns, this one cut off halfway down his thighs. Under it, he wore fishnet tights and boots that resembled the ones Edwin usually wore. He had a pearl necklace around his neck, and bright pink rubber gloves on. And that wasnât even mentioning the make-up. Of course, Charles always wore eyeliner, but this was different. His eyelids were painted the same teal as his outfit all the way up to his eyebrows, and he wore lipstick.
âHe wouldnât wear the heels,â Crystal tutted, shaking her head at him in disappointment.
Edwin recognised the costume from a movie Crystal had made them watch a few weeks prior. Charles had already seen it, had snuck into the cinema to watch it with a girl when it was playing on Halloween the year before he died. It hadnât been a date; Charles was sure to tell them. They were just the only ones who wanted to watch it - all their other friends had claimed it was for queers. Charles had brushed it off at the time, but now saw the ironic truth in their claim, given both his recent revelations and the fact he knew that girl he snuck out with was now happily married to a woman.
âMate, you lookâŚâ Charles began.
âCharlesâŚâ Edwin breathed, unable to tear his eyes away from Charlesâs legs.
Heâd seen Charlesâs legs many times by now, but never like this and never in this context. It was overwhelming and he couldnât figure out how to look anywhere else.
âHis face is further up, Edwin,â Crystal teased. âJeez, now Iâm glad we didnât go for the corset,â she muttered to Niko.
âDo you guys want us to leave you alone?â Niko smirked.
Edwin cleared his throat, finally managing to look somewhere other than his boyfriendâs legs in those fishnets.
âNo, that wonât be necessary. Besides, Jenny will be here soon,â he said, hoping no one noticed the way his voice cracked a little.
Everyone noticed.
As Edwin and Niko headed over to the desk to lay out the food, Crystal stepped towards Charles â who was still silent and staring.
âAre you okay there, buddy?â she asked, the amusement clear in her voice.
Charles snapped out of it, turning to face her.
âYeah. Aces, why?â
âHmmâŚsure,â Crystal smirked.
It was nearly twenty minutes later when Jenny arrived. She was also dressed as a vampire, wearing a dark red corset top over a flowy white long-sleeved shirt with black trousers and a collared cloak. The shirt had several small bloodstains on it. She brought in a tray of pastries that were made to resemble severed fingers.
Niko came running over to her and took the tray from her hands.
âOh my god! You and Edwin match!â she exclaimed, pointing between the two of them.
Jenny looked up to Edwin, who appeared to be looking for a book on their many shelves.
âDracula. Neat,â she said.
âJust a generic vampire, Iâm afraid,â Edwin corrected. âAlthough, I suppose it could be Count Dracula.â
âRight, okay.â
âAre you a specific one?â Crystal asked before biting into one of Nikoâs decorated cookies.
âYeah, Iâm meant to be Carmilla.â
Everyone looked at her blankly.
âCarmilla Karnstein? From the book Carmilla? Like one of the first pieces of vampire literature?â Jenny asked, bewildered.
âI cannot say I have ever read it,â Edwin apologised.
âWell, you should. Itâs a classic. And itâs really gay, soâŚâ
Jenny turned around once more, taking one of the skull-emblazoned paper plates Crystal had found in a shop and moving onto the food.
âIs that bloodâŚreal?â Charles asked her, pointing out the stains on her shirt.
Jenny just raised her eyebrows and took a bite out of one of Nikoâs cookies. Charles didnât want to think about that too hard.
âNice Frank-N-Furter costume,â she said. âGood to know youâre not entirely uncultured.â
âThanks,â Charles replied. âSo, what food is enchanted?â he asked excitedly, practically bouncing over to Edwin.
Edwin and Niko had successfully baked some foods that the ghosts could eat, and Charles had been incredibly excited about it for days. He really missed food.
âAptly enough, the cookies shaped like ghosts. And also, the white marshmallows. Not the orange ones, though,â said Edwin.
âBrills,â Charles said, already reaching across the desk to take one of the cookies.
He took a bite, and the satisfied sound he made gave Edwin flashbacks heâd rather not be thinking about with other people in the room.
âThese are so good, Niko,â he said, giving her a playful punch to the arm. âGod, I missed food. Can you do this to anything?â he asked Edwin.
âI believe the enchantment will need a few tweaks depending on what item it is, but yes. Donât worry Charles, youâll get your enchanted spaghetti,â Edwin laughed, practically reading Charlesâs mind.
âI love you, you know that right?â
âI do believe youâve mentioned it once or twice before.â
âAre you guys just gonna keep flirting all night or are we gonna do more party things?â Crystal asked from where she was sitting in Edwinâs usual chair.
âWe can multitask,â Charles argued, throwing an arm around Edwinâs shoulders and kissing him on the cheek.
Crystal was beginning to regret her involvement in getting them together. Niko walked over and perched on the arm of the chair beside her, leaning in to kiss her. Okay, maybe she could multitask too.
âWow you guys, way to make a woman feel single,â Jenny said from the other side of the room. âYou two are literally dead and youâve got more game than me,â she looked over at the boys.
âDonât worry Jenny, weâll find you someone!â Niko reassured.
âPreferably someone who isnât a psycho murderer who stalks me this time.â
Niko nodded, looking at the ground. Enough time had passed now that they could make light-hearted jokes about the Maxine situation, but it still left as much trauma as expected for Jenny. Niko still felt guilty, even though sheâd been mostly forgiven.
The vague tension in the room was interrupted by a knock at the door.
âDo we really have to take a case?â Niko groaned.
âI donât think it is a case, Niko, donât worry,â Edwin said, walking to the door while Charles reached into the games cupboard and pulled out a large green bowl, filled with what looked like tiny little trinkets.
Edwin opened the door.
âTrick or treat!â came the small voices from outside.
There were three small children: a young girl around nine years old dressed as a witch, a boy around the same age with a werewolf mask, and another girl who looked no older than about two wearing a pumpkin outfit. All three of them had similar burn scars on their faces and arms.
âHey, you three! Happy Halloween!â Charles said, offering the bowl out to them.
They all took two tiny curios each. A green feather, an engraved brass ring, a chunk of amethyst, a tiny brooch with a leaf design, a small bag of pink dust, and a wishbone. All small harmless items the boys had picked up over the years but had no use for â but always brought joy to the faces of the young ghosts in the neighbourhood.
âYouâre dressed up!â the older girl said, surprised.
âYeah, thought weâd give it a go this year,â Charles said.
âWhat are you meant to be?â the boy asked him.
âUhhh,â Charles stammered.
âShouldnât you three be running along? The night wonât last forever, you know. I heard the fortune teller down the road is giving out magical coins!â Edwin cut in.
All three children gasped.
âReally?â
âYes, but they wonât be there forever so youâd better go quick!â
âThanks Edwin!â said the girl.
âBye Charles!â said the boy.
Charles gave the youngest a high five before all three of them leapt down the staircase excitedly.
When they closed the door and turned back around to face the room, they were met with looks of confusion from Crystal, Niko and Jenny.
âWhat-â Crystal began.
âThe ghost children in the area come around every year, we always make sure we have trinkets to give them since they canât eat sweets.â
âHey maybe next year we can actually give them enchanted sweets!â Charles suggested.
âWait, those three were ghosts? Did they all-â Jenny trailed off.
âThe James siblings. They all died in a housefire a couple of years ago. Their parents were out shopping so they had a babysitter, but none of them survived the fire. Death came for the babysitter, but the children were all hiding in the rubble,â Edwin explained.
âShit, those poor kids. I bet their parents feel horrific, oh my god.â
âThat is precisely why we havenât reported them to the Lost and Found Department,â Edwin said sternly. âThe parents got into a terrible car accident upon getting the phone call about the children. They both survived, but only barely. They can see ghosts now, so the family is reunited.â
As Edwin spoke, Charles walked over to the window.
âTheir dads are just outside, look,â he pointed across the road.
Everyone gathered around him and looked down. They saw the three children running over to two men stood on the opposite side of the road. They all showed their buckets to their parents excitedly, then pointed down the road. Their parents laughed, and the family all headed off down the road together.
âThatâs sweet,â said Niko. âTheyâre still all together.â
âPrecisely. Itâs nice to know tragedy doesnât always end in entirely pain.â
The others didnât miss the way Edwin looked towards Charles as he spoke.
Unsurprisingly, it didnât take long before the boys insisted on a game of Cluedo.
âNot fair, you guys always win!â Crystal argued.
âWell, weâve got thirty-four years on you, Crystal.â
âAlso, itâs more a game of luck than one of skill. If you get a good hand of cards to mark things off, youâre already further ahead than other players.â
âYeah, yeah, fine whatever. But if you guys win, you owe me, like, the entirety of the payment for the next case.â
âDeal,â Edwin agreed, and they shook on it.
âHey! What about me?â Niko pouted.
âYou win almost as often as they do, babe.â
âI keep telling you! You should watch more Scooby Doo,â Niko shrugged, leaning her head on Crystalâs shoulder.
The deal however, never got resolved. Halfway through the game, there was another knock on the door, and this time it wasnât ghostly trick-or-treaters; it was a case. And surprisingly, it was a real one. Usually on Halloween, their cases were less often genuine supernatural encounters and more often paranoid older ghosts misunderstanding typical Halloween living-people things. But this one was real. It wasnât difficult, and only took them an hour or so to solve, but it was real.
Someone nearby had been having their own ghostly Halloween party, but their decorations had all been possessed by mischievous imps that had begun causing havoc. But the Dead Boy Detectives had dealt with imps dozens of times before; they arrived, set a few traps, Edwin cast a few spells, Charles swung his bat a few times, and the job was successfully jobbed.
By the time they got back to the office, Niko had already beaten Crystal and Jenny at Cluedo twice, and they were currently tied one-all in a very intense Uno tournament. When Crystal won the fourth game, they decided to wrap it up.
Then, Niko suggested â well, insisted, but no one can resist her puppy eyes â that they play Monopoly. Her argument was that it was thematically relevant since the box they had was Beetlejuice themed.
The game was as loud and chaotic as anyone would expect, and Crystal and Jenny both nearly flipped the board twice each in the first half an hour. Charles was the first to go bankrupt, closely followed by Edwin. The other three swore they planned it in advance, since they used it to their advantage, sneaking off into the games cupboard for a snog and locking the door whilst Jenny was in the bathroom, Crystal was clearing away the empty food trays and Niko was distracted watching fireworks outside the window. They were in there for the entire last ninety minutes of the game, and when they finally stepped back into the room, both had incredibly messy hair, and both Charlesâs lipstick and Edwinâs fake blood were smudged over both of their chins. Crystal had never been happier that they put a silencing spell on the cupboard a few months prior. But then again, it meant they had an excuse to disappear into there whenever they felt like it. God, she and Niko needed to get payback at some point.
âCould you guys not have waited until after everyone else left?â Crystal asked, her eyebrows raised at them.
âHey, donât look at me,â Charles put his hands up in defence. âItâs not my fault this one couldnât keep his eyes off my legs.â
âIt absolutely is your fault for wearing those tights.â
âAnd on that note, Iâm leaving,â Jenny butted in, standing up from the sofa. âThis was great, but itâs nearly midnight and unlike you guys who donât seem to have a schedule, I have a shop to open at nine oâclock tomorrow.â
âUnderstandable. Goodnight, Jenny,â Edwin said, reaching to readjust his bow tie only to remember he wasnât wearing one.
âYeah, Niko and I should probably head off, too,â Crystal said.
âDo we have to?â Niko complained, but her face changed when she turned and saw that Crystal was giving her a look. âOh. Yes. Definitely. We should go.â
âWeâll see you tomorrow, yeah?â Charles said.
âYep. âNight guys! Great party, we should definitely do that every year!â
âI must admit it wasâŚmuch more enjoyable than I anticipated,â Edwin admitted.
âSee! Told you youâd like it.â
Niko hugged Edwin before she was practically dragged out of the room by Crystal.
âOh! I forgot my jacket,â Niko realised when she and Crystal were halfway down the road, and she had begun to shiver.
âHere, take mine,â Crystal said, taking hers off and placing it around Nikoâs shoulders. âI highly doubt we would wanna go back in there.â
Niko snickered, locking her arm with Crystalâs.
âSeriously, theyâre insatiable! At least weâre more subtle about it.â
âGive them some slack, theyâve got over thirty years of built-up sexual tension to resolve!â
âI really donât wanna think about those two resolving their tension,â Crystal practically gagged.
âMaybe you wanna think about me in this turtleneck instead?â Niko said suggestively.
âI-â Crystal stammered.
âDonât think I didnât notice you staring at my chest all night,â she teased.
âOkay, shut up.â
âHey, itâs allowed. Iâve been staring at you all night, too. I told you Ayumi was my gay awakening, and I was not kidding.â
âGlad you thought my costume was a success, then.â
âI think tonight was a success! I donât think weâll have any trouble convincing the boys to properly celebrate dress up again next year. Maybe we can even get Charles to do the full corset look!â
âIâd rather not be in the room, or even anywhere near the room, when Edwin sees that.â
âFair,â Niko giggled.
Illuminated by streetlamps and the soft glow of pumpkins and decorative lights from nearby apartment buildings, the two of them walked back to their flat.
Maybe it was a little strange that two supernatural beings began celebrating a holiday that turned them into novelty ornaments or silly stories. Or maybe it made perfect sense: two ghosts, their psychic best friend, their other best friend who had literally died once, and reluctant older sister figure who just happened to have been possessed by Crystalâs demon ex-boyfriend one time and got herself involved with everything â celebrating Halloween as a strange little family.
is it a week late? yes. did i literally just write it? yes. anyway here's
@deadboyween day 2

notes: we're gonna pretend i actually had this written for day 2 and didn't just write it in a burst of inspiration on day 9 while procrastinating finishing my fic for day 11 :D

even upside down, it's beautiful somehow
The current case is stressful. Itâs had all four of the detectives â and even the Night Nurse at one point â chasing a troublesome shapeshifter around the streets of London for the better part of a week now, causing havoc along the way.
Needless to say, by the end of the sixth day of running around, the girls had exhausted themselves. Theyâd managed a few hours sleep most nights, but by now theyâre just drained. They decide to take a full night off to catch up on some rest while Charles and Edwin head out on their own. The chase is easier for them anyway, what with the added advantage of mirror-hopping, so theyâd probably end up being more productive with this particular case without them.
Niko loves sharing a flat with Crystal. Itâs nice knowing sheâs not on her own anymore, and even better that her roommate is her best-friend-slash-definite-crush. So, sheâs comfortable and happy when she climbs into bed to get some sleep.
She finds, however, that she canât drift off. Thereâs something distracting her â some sound coming from the other side of her bedroom wall that she canât help but focus on. With a start, she realises itâs the sound of poorly concealed sobbing: Crystal is in her own room crying.
After sliding on her slippers and dressing gown, Niko leaves her own room and stands in front of the door to Crystalâs, worried. Sheâs so worried that she almost opens the door without thinking, but stops herself. Ever since what happened with Jenny and Maxine, sheâs been much more aware of how often she sometimes oversteps boundaries. She never intends to, always just wants to help, and canât always tell based on peopleâs social cues when sheâs overstepped. She feels terrible about it, but at least Jenny seems to have forgiven her now, and sheâs more aware of herself.
She knocks gently on Crystalâs door three times and hears sniffling from inside.
âYou okay, Niko?â Crystal asks, her voice weak and croaky.
Niko feels a warmth in her chest at the knowledge that Crystal knows itâs her. She knows theyâre the only two who live in the flat, so realistically sheâs the only person who would be knocking at her door past 10pm, but she still loves it.
âYeah, can I come in?â
âUh, sure.â She doesnât sound sure.
Niko quietly opens the door, her hedgehog slippers shuffling along the floor as she approaches Crystalâs bed and sits on the edge of it.
Crystal is sitting in the centre, her back against her many pillows, hugging her knees to her chest. She smiles weakly.
âI heard you crying, and I just wanted to check youâre okay,â Niko says, looking concerned.
âIâm fine, I promise,â Crystal lies.
âYou donât look particularly okay. You donât have to tell me about it if you donât want to, but it might help. Iâm always here for you, you know?.â
âThanks, Niko. I know you are, itâs justâŚâ
Crystalâs eyes close for a second and she breathes out shakily.
âWhatâs going on?â Niko asks, trying not to be too pushy.
âItâs Charles and Edwin,â Crystal admits.
âWhat about them?â
âTheyâve been likeâŚall over each other recently.â
Niko canât help but smile remembering the way the two of them had run towards each other and met in a desperate, bruising kiss after the group had been separated for several hours earlier that day.
âThey are in the honeymoon phase,â she says.
âI know, and Iâm happy for them, I really am. Itâs great that they finally fucking did something about the obvious repressed married couple vibe theyâve always had going on, but itâs justâŚâ Crystal trails off, looking at the other side of her room, away from Niko.
âAre you still a little jealous?â
âNo? Well, yeah a bit, butâŚâ she canât seem to find the right words, settling on: âGod, Iâm such a fucking terrible person.â
Well, those definitely arenât the right words either.
âHey,â Niko says firmly.
She kicks her slippers off and shuffles herself further onto the bed so sheâs sitting cross-legged across from Crystal. She takes the other girlâs hands in her own and holds them tightly.
âNo youâre not,â she looks Crystal in the eyes as she says it. âWhatever youâre feeling right now, youâre allowed to feel it. It does not make you a terrible person.â
âThis case is just really stressing me out so Iâm really emotional and it all just seems to be taking me over. Really, you can go back to bed if you want,â Crystal insists.
âNo, I want to stay. If thatâs alright. I canât go to bed knowing youâre sitting here crying thinking youâre a terrible person for feeling things.â
Crystal chuckles, her voice still wet with tears.
âThanks, Niko.â
âCome on then, whatâs making you think that?â
âEvery time I see Charles and Edwin together, itâs justâŚIâm not uncomfortable or anything, something in me just hurts. Itâs not even really like I still have feelings for Charles. I mean, I do a little. Heâs still him. But obviously what I feel for him is barely anything compared to what him and Edwin have got going on.â
âThat doesnât make them meaningless though!â Niko cuts in.
âI know. But I also knew that anything between us wasnât really gonna last anyway. We both had shit to work through and alsoâŚheâs dead and Iâm not, so, thereâs that. But thatâs like exactly my point!â Crystal sits up slightly.
Niko is silent for a second, a little confused.
ââŚSorry, Iâm not really following.â
âIâm more just jealous of what they have in general. All of my romantic relationships turn to shit,â Crystal says, like itâs a fact. âCharles and I broke up â I know I initiated that, but he still moved on really quickly. Obviously, Iâm not blaming Charles for any of this, itâs not his fault and him and Edwin were always gonna happen but it does hurt a little and sometimes I just get in my own head about it. AndâŚbefore him was David. I was dating a literal demon. And I still donât really remember much about the relationships I had before him, just that I had a girlfriend not long before David and a boyfriend a year or so before her, but obviously both of those went to shit - probably because of me being a shit person. And like, I know romantic relationships arenât everything but it just makes me feel likeâŚand with everything with my parents as well, I just canât help but think sometimes, maybe IâmâŚunlovable or something.â
Crystal finally breathes out, after saying everything in what felt like a single breath. She stares down at her own feet, unable to look up to Niko. When Niko doesnât say anything in response, she finally gives in and lifts her head.
The way Niko looks at her is almost enough to make her start crying all over again. She looks so sad, her eyes welling up with tears and her eyebrows scrunched up a little in the middle of her forehead. Crystal is about to open her mouth to say something else when sheâs cut off by Niko surging forwards, capturing her in a tight hug. They stay there for a few seconds in silence before Crystal lifts her arms to hug back and Niko speaks up.
âYouâre not unlovable,â she says softly but sternly. âI know your parents are shitty. And youâve had to deal with a lot of shit from your past and people andâŚeverything. But youâre not unlovable. Youâre like the best person I know. I love you. Charles loves you. Edwin loves you. Jenny loves you. Hell, I think even the Night Nurse loves you in a way.â
âThose are all platonic, though,â Crystal argues.
Niko opens her mouth. She wants to say something, to tell Crystal that not all of them are â that the way she feels is different, is more, but she hesitates. Maybe this isnât the right time for a love confession. Crystal needs support right now, and while knowing how Niko feels might quell some of her worries, she knows it would probably do more harm than good. She might not believe her, might think Niko is just saying it to calm her down.
âAnd they matter just as much,â Niko settles on saying.
She pulls away from the hug, but only enough that they can see each otherâs faces again. She still holds Crystalâs arms, grounding her.
âI know they do, butâŚokay, maybe unlovable isnât the right word. Undesirable, maybe.â
Niko immediately shakes her head.
âNo. Youâre not that either,â she says. âI know your past relationships havenât beenâŚthe best-â
Crystal chuckles slightly at the understatement.
â-but thereâll be someone out there. Thereâs someone who will love you and want you just for being you. I promise,â Niko reassures.
âWhoâd want this mess?â Crystal laughs.
Me, Niko thinks. I want you. Mess and all. She doesnât say that, though. She will, one day; hopefully some day soon. She really wants to. She wants Crystal to know just how much and how deeply she feels for her, how much Crystal changed her life, how much she wants her around all the time, whether itâs both of them teaching the boys how to play video games, or the two of them having movie nights together, or even just watching her and Edwin bicker like loving siblings. She wants to tell her all of it. But not right now.
âSomeone will. They wonât care about how messy you are. Theyâll see you and want you. No matter what,â she says.
And she sounds like she means it. It doesnât sound like a guess, or like sheâs saying something just to cheer Crystal up. She sounds like she knows it like itâs a fact of the universe â that someone will one day see and love and want and cherish Crystal like she wants them to. And that just about makes Crystal believe her, even if she doesnât understand just how true it is.
âThanks Niko. For saying that,â she sniffles.
âI only say it because itâs the truth,â Niko smiles at her.
Crystal returns the smile, and immediately hugs her again.
âDo you want me to stay here tonight?â Niko asks, quietly against Crystalâs shoulder.
âYou donât have to. Youâve already done more than enough.â
âI want to. Hey, itâs a sleepover.â
Crystal couldnât really argue with that. The sleepovers had become a sort of ritual of theirs since moving in together.
âOkay,â Crystal laughs.
Niko takes off her dressing gown, throwing it down onto the floor with her slippers, and climbs under the duvet next to Crystal. They lie facing one another, and after deliberating for nearly a minute, Niko reaches over to drape one arm over Crystalâs waist.
âIs this okay?â she asks, worried she might be overstepping.
Crystal only hums in response, moving further into Nikoâs embrace until sheâs practically lying on Nikoâs chest. She holds her closer.
Within minutes, Crystalâs breath becomes shallower, and her limbs relax more.
âI love you,â Niko mutters into the top of Crystalâs head as she drifts off to sleep.
And once sheâs sure Crystal can no longer hear her, she whispers again, this time:
âI want you. No matter how messy you are.â

heard the voices and caught my breath, so close and yet so far from death
Chapter 1
Grief was a strange old thing.
Edwin had only known Niko for a few weeks and now, a month after her death, he still felt the pain of losing her weighing him down as though they had been friends for years. In reality, heâd been grieving her longer than they had known each other, and that was a difficult thing to come to terms with. Theoretically, ghosts could have eternity, so time and emotions didnât quite correlate in the same way they would have if he were alive. If he were alive, of course he would still be grieving, just as Crystal was, but a few weeks were barely anything compared to how long he had existed. Niko had merely been a blip in time for him, and yet here he was, sitting at his desk preparing for a new client as a way of distracting himself from how much it hurt, from how often he saw a girl lying on the ground, eyes glazed over, blood gushing from her chest, whenever he closed his eyes.
He supposed, when you spent 16 years living in a society full of such strict expectations, where affection was so abnormal that even your own parents never hugged you; and when you spent 73 years in the worst place in existence, entirely alone aside from the creature that continuously hunted you down and tore you apart; and when you spent 34 years with the best person youâd ever met, who you would never give up for anything since you loved him far too much for that and believed there would never be anyone else who would care even half as much about you as he didâŚmeeting someone else who also cared, who also listened, who also helped you and understood you in a way no one else ever hadâŚof course it would hurt for a long time to lose them â no matter how fleeting your time together was.
He'd grown closer to Crystal during the time since Port Townsend. She was as close to Niko as he was, and sheâd had a similarly profound effect on her and how she viewed herself and the world. He supposed it must be harder for her, in a way. Being a ghost, Edwin had become rather detached from the idea of death as an ending. Crystal may have been a psychic with full knowledge and access to the spectral realm, but he supposed it must hurt in a different way, being alive and watching someone else die to save you, and someone as kind and loving as Niko Sasaki at that.
At first, he and Crystal had yelled at each other a lot. Both of them had been on edge, their usually stiff-built emotional walls having deteriorated through the overwhelming sadness. Theyâd been at each otherâs throats more than ever, Charles caught in the crossfire, until he eventually convinced the two of them to sit down and talk.
They had talked, and it helped. They werenât as snappy with one another, since they knew and understood that they were going through the same thing. They bonded over their grief, Edwin even offering Crystal a hug she so clearly needed, which Edwin hadnât realised he needed too. They had realised theyâd become so emotionally vulnerable because both of them felt some sort of blame for what happened. Crystal blamed herself because the slashing spell had been directed at her before Niko jumped in front of it â she felt she should have been the one who died. Edwin felt responsible since it was him they were both trying to rescue. They talked about it, both reassuring each other it was not their fault, but that feeling, that pang of guilt at the mere thought of their friend, never really disappeared. It felt a little lighter though, a little easier.
Charles had also been suffering â of course he had. Heâd begun to view Niko as the younger sister he never had and losing her had felt quite like dying all over again. But Charles being Charles put the othersâ needs above his own, trying to help them through their grief while pushing his own deep down into himself until it exploded out one night and he burst into tears one night, gripping onto Edwin like he would slip away if he let go.
All three of them were broken. But they had each other. They had people who understood, and they had the Agency â because as much as Edwin hated to admit it, sometimes a distraction helped. Getting his head stuck into casework and research gave him something to focus on, which was why they continued to take on new cases despite everything.
âIâm Edwin Payne,â he introduced himself to their latest client â a middle-aged woman in a 19th century maidâs uniform. âThis is Charles Rowland, and Crystal Palace. Welcome to the Dead Boy Detective Agency. How can we help you?â
âMy nameâs Susan Grantham. In life, I were the maid at one of the bigger houses over in Uxbridge. I did my work willingly, for the Andersons that lived there. The wife Em was a good friend oâ mine, we grew up together and had always been close. She made me the godmother of her children, so when I died in that house three months after she and her husband were killed when their train derailed, I knew I had to stick around and help however I could. But when they grew up, and all of âem but the oldest married off and got land of their own, I never went anywhere. Always thought someone would come for me once my job was done but they still ainât come. So itâs just been me in that house. Itâs a hotel now. Emâs great-great grandson was the last to live there, he died in the war in â43. House was empty for years âtil someone bought it in the â90s and turned it into a hotel. Itâs constantly full of people now, but Iâm convinced I ainât the only thing haunting it anymore. Thereâs been loads of weird accidents in there, and thatâs why Iâve come to you.â
âWeird accidents?â Charles repeated. âSounds like a poltergeist, weâve dealt with them before.â
âWhat kind of weird accidents is the establishment succumbing to, Ms Grantham?â
âOh, all sorts. Knives moving on their own in the kitchens, doors knocking with no one there, and too many guests have come screaming to the front desk about floating furniture.â
âDefinitely sounds like a poltergeist, right Edwin?â
âOh my god, Edwin, this is just like that Scooby Doo episode we watched!â said Niko.
Edwin smiled for a split second, then paused. His face fell. WaitâŚwhat?
Edwin didnât reply to Charlesâs question, instead looking around desperate and confused, as if there was any possible way she could be there in the room. She wasnât, of course. How could she be?
âEdwin, you okay?â Charles asked quietly, clearly worried.
âI thought IâŚnever mind,â Edwin shook his head slightly, turning back to the client. âWeâd be more than happy to take your case, it sounds simple enough. Now, onto payment.â
Five minutes later, the payment deal was agreed upon and Susan left them the address to Anderson House before leaving the office.
âWell, this should be a straight-forward one,â Edwin said, looking up with a small smile.
The other two werenât smiling back. They both looked like they were trying to figure something out, as though they could read Edwinâs thoughts if they stared hard enough.
âWhatâs the matter with you two?â he asked, already making notes in his little book.
âWhatâs the matter with us? Whatâs the matter with you?â Crystal asked.
âYeah, mate, what was that about?â
âIâm afraid I have no idea what youâre talking about,â Edwin claimed.
âYou went all quiet and weird for a sec looking around like there was something there.â
âI can assure you, I am quite alright, Charles. The window merely created an interesting light pattern on the rug,â he lied.
Charles didnât seem convinced, but he and Crystal stopped prying.
Edwin cursed himself. Heâd thought about Niko non-stop since everything happened, but that was the first time he had imagined her there with them. Her voice sounded so real, like she was really there. Edwin hoped this wouldnât become a repeating thing, he didnât know if heâd be able to bear it if Nikoâs voice was supplied by his mind but she wasnât, couldnât be, physically there. He already missed her enough.
He cleared his throat, shaking the thought from his mind, and got back to the case notes. This one was going to be easy.
Chapter 2
The Case of the Haunted Hotel was easy. It was the running commentary in Edwinâs mind that was not. Hearing Nikoâs voice had apparently not been a one-time thing. Throughout the entire case, part of Edwinâs mental commentary had been through her. Sheâd provided more comparisons between the case and one of the Scooby Doo episodes theyâd watched together, given several niche comments that would have sounded incredibly strange in any other voice, and had helped with the case itself, reminding Edwin that Charles had put the one item they really needed in the bag of tricks a few hours beforehand. And it didnât even stop after that case; it continued for a few weeks, and as Edwin grew somewhat more accustomed to the apparent second consciousness in his mind, he started to enjoy it â it was a comfort that he could still feel her helping them, like it was all four of them on a case together instead of three of them and a painful space.
He only enjoyed it as it was happening, though. When the cases were closed and they returned to the office, he sat down and thought back on the idea, and then it was much more of another hurt than a comfort. When he had most of his focus directed onto a case, it was nice to have her back in a strange subconscious way, but when he was alone with his thoughts once more, the little voice in his head gave him little more than overwhelming grief. Because no matter how hard he tried to pretend that voice was real, he knew it could never be. Niko was dead, and despite the fact Edwin himself was too, he knew this one was forever. Theyâd left her lying on the floor of Esther Finchâs living room for Death to collect, not even waiting to see her rise as a ghost before they fled, as they had so many times since 1989. By now sheâd be settled into her afterlife, no doubt in the paradise she deserved, perhaps reunited with her father, while Edwin was still on Earth. Even if heâd wanted to go with Death in the hopes of joining her, he knew he wouldnât. He may have filled in the forms that meant Hell was no longer looking for him, but that was still his afterlife â that damn demon had made sure of that. His choices were eternal damnation in Hell or potential eternal grief on Earth, and the answer to that didnât even beg questioning. Heâd just have to learn to exist in her absence, even if he did have her sweet happy voice echoing in his mind now.
Several cases later â some of these ones much more complex than the poltergeist of Anderson House â the group needed a break. Even before they had any living members of the agency, Edwin and Charles used to have a rest day every once in a while, just to do something other than work for once, whether it be binge-playing Cluedo, Edwin teaching Charles fencing, or the two doing separate things, Edwin visiting the many museums around London and Charles exercising his ghostly privileges by going to all the concerts he wants. These rest days had become more common with Crystal around, since she actually got tired, and theyâd found a whole host of things they enjoy doing as a group.
Tonight, theyâd been to the theatre. Thereâd been a musical on in the West End that Crystal had desperately wanted to see, and while Charles and Edwin had never really had an interest in musicals, theyâd agreed to go along with her. Edwin found he rather enjoyed it actually, and had been mentally replying to everything Mind-Niko was saying as they watched.
It was growing dark when they left the theatre, so Charles and Edwin walked Crystal back to her new flat on their way home. Charles and Crystal were walking slightly ahead of Edwin, whose gaze flicked between the two of them. He didnât know if anything else had happened between them since their goodbye kiss in Port Townsend â Charles certainly hadnât mentioned anything, but Edwin worried he wouldnât tell him if anything had, likely out of fear of hurting his feelings since his own confession. Charles had a knack for leaving out information that might cause Edwin distress. Part of Edwin wanted to see their lack of anything official as a sign of hope that maybe, just maybe Charles could start to feel the same way he did. The larger part of Edwin, however, only wanted Charles to be happy, and if that came from him being with Crystal, then Edwin would be wholeheartedly supportive â heâd even tried to convince him to talk to her about it before she intended to leave Port Townsend. And it was clear there was still something there between them, whether they were acting on it or not. They walked down the street together, not quite touching or holding hands, but as close as seemed physically possible without either of those things happening. Charles was wearing his usual long black jacket and slacks, whereas Crystal had dressed up a bit, wearing a loose-fitting lavender trouser suit with one of her many floral designed mesh tops underneath, the pinkish-purple matching her eyeliner.
âShe looks so pretty,â the Niko in Edwinâs mind supplied, and he supposed she was right.
He may not have been interested in girls that way, but he could still admit that Crystal was beautiful. He could hardly blame Charles for developing feelings almost immediately, she was exactly the kind of girl who usually caught his best friendâs eye. Only Crystal wasnât one of those girls Charles would see in the street gossiping with their friends, having never seen a ghost in her life and likely never believing in them if you asked. Crystal was psychic, and brilliant and messy and beautiful. Edwin may have spent a lot of time in petty arguments with her, but beneath that he truly cared for her, and sheâd become a close friend. He admired her strength after everything sheâd been through. Once David was dealt with and Edwin could stop stressing so much about having a hellish being so close to the agency, so close to him, he really started to see how much he had affected her. Having your memories stolen from you only to get them back and discover you did horrible things in the pastâŚthat must have been horrible. Yet here she was, a fully-fledged part of the Dead Boy Detective Agency despite being neither dead nor a boy, and she was one of the best people Edwin knew. His thoughts about Crystal were soon interrupted by a different thought, this one taking on a different, more feminine voice than his own inner monologue.
âYou know, I never told you, but I have such a crush on her.â
That stopped Edwin in his tracks. What? What was wrong with him? Had his mind really invented a story about Niko liking Crystal in some sick attempt to quell the jealousy he couldnât help but feel towards her and Charles? Was he really that petty? He thought heâd been handling Charlesâs rejection well, heâd never felt more than a slight twinge in his chest whenever he saw the two of them together. He was perfectly fine with the fact Charles didnât feel the same way â he had never quite expected him to in the first place â wasnât he? Evidently, his subconscious disagreed. He felt horrible, as though heâd done something so wrong, not only disrespecting Charles and Crystal but Niko too.
âMate, whatâs wrong?â Charles asked, having noticed Edwin had stopped and gone back for him.
âNothing,â Edwin replied sharply.
âAre you sure-â
âI said Iâm fine, Charles.â
He hadnât intended to sound quite so cold and snappy, and immediately regretted it. Before Charles could say anything else, he marched ahead, passing Crystal without even looking at her. He knew Charles was just worried. He had been giving him a look for a few weeks whenever he thought his back was turned, and Edwin felt terrible for making him so concerned. But he couldnât tell him. What was he supposed to say? Oh, my apologies Charles, itâs just that my mind has somehow been conjuring up the voice of our dead friend for nearly a month, and Iâm not handling it too well. Charles told him he could tell him anything, but he had already burdened him with the knowledge of his feelings, he didnât want to give him something else to deal with. Edwin had survived Hell for seventy years, surely he could handle his own mind by now.
âEdwin, calm down,â he heard the imaginary voice of Niko say, and she was doing nothing to help the situation.
âStop,â Edwin replied aloud.
He tried to keep the tears at bay as he walked on, unable to quite make out exactly what Charles and Crystal were muttering about behind him.

and it feels good to be known so well
Charles Rowland rarely sat still. He always had to be somewhat dynamic, whether it be bouncing his leg up and down or fidgeting with whatever was in his hands at the time. He was fine if he was focused, like during client interviews and while on cases, but when he was just relaxing, he was never truly still.
That had been the case for as long as Edwin could remember, but Charlesâs constant movement had never been quite as bad as it had been for the last few weeks. Even seeing him sitting down at all had been a rarity.
Heâd been on his feet for so long that he just looked soâŚtired. Ghosts may not sleep, but that didnât mean they could keep moving forever without so much as a break. Edwin had been beginning to worry. Something was bothering him, that much was clear. And the way he kept looking directly at Edwin, as though to say something, then immediately looked away as soon as the other boy made eye contact, really didnât help Edwinâs growing anxiety.
âCharles, are you quite alright?â he asked, putting his notebook away in the drawer of his desk and giving the boy his full attention. âI know youâre usually very mobile but there is clearly something on your mind.â
âIâm good, mate. Donât worry about me,â Charles replied simply.
Edwin knew Charles well enough to tell when what he said was just a pre-programmed response to get people to stop worrying about him, no matter what was going on in that brilliant-yet-troubled mind of his. Edwin also, however, knew Charles well enough to tell when pushing him to talk wasnât a good idea. And it was clear that this wasnât the time, so Edwin chose support over questioning.
âOkay, but if you do need to talk, you know Iâm always here to listen. And please sit down, you look exhausted.â
âI said Iâm fine, Edwin,â Charles said again, snappier. He immediately regretted his tone. âJustâŚâ
Then, Charles seemed to wobble a little on his feet. He let out a shaky breath, even though his lungs hadnât truly inhaled air in thirty-five years, and leaned back against the arm of the sofa as though to steady himself.
âCharlesâŚ?â
âShit, Edwin, I thinkâŚâ
Before Charles could even finish his sentence, a spot on his chest just over his unbeating heart began to glow, and within a few seconds the rest of his corporeal form had faded away, leaving only a glowing sphere in his place.
âCharles!â
Edwin rushed over to the sofa, just catching the orb before it rolled off the sofa and onto the ground. He lifted the pulsing light to face height, inspecting it as though it could actually be harmed.
âThis is the second time in two weeks, Charles. Please, just talk to me, youâre exhausting yourself,â he sighed, trying to fight back tears he couldnât quite explain.
He thought things had gotten better since Port Townsend. He thought they had agreed to talk when they had important things on their mind, no matter what. He thought they werenât keeping the deep stuff quiet anymore.
Evidently, he was wrong. Edwin couldnât help but think that perhaps it was his confession that had caused them to backtrack so significantly in terms of communication. Sure, Charles told him that he was fine with it, that it hadnât changed anything between them, that they were still the most important people in the world to each other â and Edwin believed him. At first glance, it would seem that they were just as close as they had been before â closer, even. Charles seemed more inclined to initiate physical contact than ever, and always seemed to be calmest when Edwin was in the room with him. But Edwin also knew Charles had gotten very good at keeping things locked up inside himself, especially things that could potentially make him feel like a burden. If everyone would be happier without it being said, it wouldnât be said. Edwin genuinely thought that if you were to look up people pleaser in a dictionary, all that would be written there as its definition would be Charles Rowlandâs name.
So if his confession had changed things, if Charles really was worrying about it, of course he wouldnât mention it. If it had changed things, of course he might think twice about being quite so open about his own struggles. Edwin just wished he understood just how much he loved him. Not necessarily the love that made Edwin want to kiss Charles, to touch him in a romantic sense â but the love that made him always want Charles around, the love that made Charles the most important person in Edwinâs universe, the love that he had for him no matter what, no matter whether or not he returned Edwinâs romantic feelings.
Edwin just loved Charles because of who he was, and he always had. He hoped one day the other boy might finally understand that, so he knew intrinsically that he really could talk to him about anything, and didnât have to bottle it up so much that things like this happened so often.
Edwin returned to his desk, but didnât pull his notebook back out just yet. He simply sat there, Charlesâs most pure and natural form floating slightly in his palms.
A few hours later, Charles had still not returned back to his usual gangly, grinning form. He was still just that tiny sphere of glowing energy. Heâd been rolling around on the desk for the better part of half an hour â Edwin scolded him for moving around in this state when his constant activity was what prompted it in the first place â and had now found a place to settle.
He was nestled on Edwinâs shoulder, as though peering over him to look at his notebook like he usually did in his corporeal body. Every so often he nuzzled closer to Edwinâs neck, and Edwin couldnât help the sense of pride and comfort he felt in the knowledge that Charles felt safe with him, no matter what secrets might be causing problems in his currently non-existent head.
The quiet of the room was interrupted when the door to the office opened and Crystal walked in.
âHey, Edwin, have you seen Charles-â she began, but cut herself off when she spotted the flickering sphere on Edwinâs shoulder. âWhatâs that?â
âOh. Hello, Crystal. Uh, this is Charles,â Edwin said.
âIâm sorry, what? HeâsâŚa blob?â Crystal looked confused as she took her coat off, laying it across the empty sofa.
âAn orb,â Edwin corrected. âIt happens to us sometimes when we get tired. We may not be able to sleep like the living do, but we can compress ourselves into our most natural form â pure spectral energy. Well, I say we can. Sometimes it is involuntary, like fainting. Thatâs what happened to Charles.â
âOkay, thatâsâŚkind of cool actually. Like ghost hibernation.â
As Crystal walked over towards the desk, Charles seemed to vibrate, growing brighter for a couple of seconds before dimming again.
âThatâs him saying hello,â Edwin clarified.
âOh. Hey, Charles! WaitâŚhe can hear us?â
âYes. Well, no. Sort of. He can sense that youâre here but perhaps not understand what youâre saying. Well, if we do hear we forget it when we turn back. We donât fully understand it, if weâre honest.â
âRight,â Crystal said, clearly understanding even less than Edwin did.
The orb moved again, this time towards the side of Edwinâs neck as he had been doing all afternoon. Edwin chuckled â it did always tickle a little when he did that.
âCharles tends to get clingy when heâs like this,â Edwin turned back to Crystal, who had sat opposite him in the chair usually reserved for clients.
Edwin from a few months ago might have told her to move, or at least given her a glaring look, but now-Edwin simply smiled at her. Theyâd become good friends since everything, once theyâd both realised they were being a little unfair taking out their frustrations on one another.
âHe told me once that it is like his way of ensuring me he is there even when he cannot exactly talk. He seems to have a proclivity for always having to be near me in some way, especially since Hell,â he continued.
âI had noticed that,â Crystal said.
âI keep trying to tell him he doesnât have to, that I can protect myself, but he just wonât listen.â
âIt does seem like protecting you makes him happy,â she commented.
âI know. And I like knowing that he is happy, of course I do. But he seems to think that if he isnât useful to me, then I will not want him around.â
âHeâs like the biggest people pleaser Iâve ever met.â
âI just wish he knew that I want him around no matter what.â
Edwin turned to look sadly at his shoulder as he spoke. Charles only nuzzled even closer.
Crystal leaned further towards him, comforting.
âIâm sure he does know that, Edwin, itâs just⌠itâs just who he is. I think with everything that happened when he was alive, he constantly feels like he has to prove himself to everyone because he could never seem to be good enough for anyone. His dad beat him, and even the people he thought were his friends turned on him and fucking killed him. Heâs gonna have a lot of trauma from that. Even if he refuses to really talk about it.â
âIâve been thinking the same thing.â
âAlso, if he can hear us right now, Iâm sure heâll know he can talk to us if he needs to,â Crystal said, her voice growing louder at the end as though specifically intending for Charles to hear.
Edwin appreciated how much she cared. Despite his initial jealousy and coldness towards her, it was nice having someone else who cared for Charles so deeply.
âI hope so. Especially sinceâŚâ he took a deep breath. He hadnât expected to be confiding in Crystal about this, but he was glad she came over. âLately, heâs seemed even more distracted. Something is weighing on him â this is the second time heâs transformed in the past fortnight. I wish he would talk to me instead of keeping it inside.â
Crystal nodded slightly, her face unexpectedly relaxing a little.
âOkay, I think I know what specifically itâs been about more recently,â she said.
âReally? Did he talk to you about it?â
He tried not to be a little sad at the idea that Charles went to Crystal about it before he went to him. It was irrational, of course â he knew the two of them were close, and of course he loved Crystal â but it wasnât helping that little voice in the back of his head that kept thinking something had changed between them since Hell, that he didnât feel as comfortable sharing things with him anymore.
âNot exactly,â Crystal said, and Edwinâs mind eased. âI kind of figured it out and brought it up.â
âWhat is it? Is something wrong?â
âNo, no, nothing like that, donât worry,â Crystal reassured him, clearly noticing this was causing Edwin distress. âLook, Iâm not the one who should tell you about it, so just believe me that itâs nothing bad, please.â
Edwin sighed.
âOkay. If youâre sure.â
âI promise. Heâll tell you when heâs ready.â
What could he possibly need to prepare to tell him? Edwin desperately suppressed the many anxiety-riddled questions and possibilities his tireless mind thought up.
âIâll be here for him no matter what,â he said.
âI know,â Crystal smiled. âYou always are.â
Edwin smiled back at her â the sister he never had. Crystal suddenly reached her hand up to her face and wiped a tear from her eye before it even had chance to fall.
âAlright, enough of that,â she sniffled. âI just came to say Iâm not gonna be here for the next couple days. Iâm meeting up with a few old friends, I wanna try and fix things. If I can.â
âOf course. I know you can, Crystal. Iâm aware I donât say things like this often, but you really are such a lovely person. I donât know exactly what you did to these friends before everything happened, but I hope they see how much youâve changed.â
âThanks, Edwin. ThatâŚit means a lot.â
Both of them looked at one another for a few seconds, the small smiles still on both of their faces.
Then, all of a sudden, the orb on Edwinâs shoulder grew brighter, and brighter, and brighter.
âWoah, whatâs-â
Before Crystal could ask, the light faded, and Charlesâs familiar form faded back into corporeality. Since he had been perched on Edwin, he was sat on the arm of the chair practically clung to him when he opened his eyes.
âCharles! Good to have you back,â Edwin sighed, relieved.
âI need to talk to you,â Charles said, looking directly into his eyes.
âAnd thatâs my cue to leave,â Crystal said, standing up from the chair and grabbing her coat from the sofa. âIâll see you guys on Wednesday, yeah?â
âGoodbye, Crystal. Good luck.â
With that, Crystal left the office. Edwin swore he saw her give Charles a smile and a thumbs up as she left the room.
Edwin turned, surprised to see Charles hadnât even moved, and was still all but pressed up against his side.
âHow are you feeling?â Edwin asked, trying not to focus too hard on the proximity.
âBetter. Thanks.â
âAre you sure? Iâm not trying to pry, but Iâm getting worried about you Charles. We said weâd talk-â
As Edwin spoke, Charles moved â but only to face him, leaning back against the desk like he did when they had clients.
âI know, mate. Iâm sorry, I justâŚright, Iâve been trying to figure out how to talk to you about something but I didnât know how or when or if, and I guessâŚthat rest I just got kind of gave me time to think a bit more without there being everything else,â Charles explained.
Edwin was confused, but gave him the chance to talk.
âRight. Is there something wrong, orâŚ?â
âNo! God, no, Edwin. Shit, Iâve really stressed you out, havenât I?â
âYes, I rather think you have,â Edwin chuckled. âI guess Iâve just been worried that perhapsâŚyou feel differently about our agreement to talk to each other about things since I told you what I did in Hell.â
âWhat? Edwin, no. Fuck, Iâm so sorry, I didnât realise-â
âYou have nothing to apologise for,â Edwin told him, reaching out to take his hands.
Maybe that was overstepping, but Charles didnât complain or pull away â quite the opposite: he held Edwin back.
âNo, I do. Youâve been here thinking IâŚgod, Iâm sorry. I swear, what you told me in Hell isâŚwell actually I guess it kind of is why Iâve been acting all weird, but itâs not what youâre thinking, I promise.â
âThen what?â
âI havenât been able to stop thinking about it, right? Ever since you told me what you did. I wanted to properly think on it because I love you so much and, like, I know weâd be us no matter what, but I just couldnât just let this go, could I?â
Edwin opened his mouth to say something, but Charles cut him off.
âI know what youâre gonna say. Youâre thinking Iâm doing what I always do and just telling you what you wanna hear, but Iâm not. I needed to think about this for me as well as for you.â
âAndâŚ?â Edwin prompted, trying not to sound as hopeful as he was steadily growing to be.
âWell, I was just driving myself insane, wasnât I? I had no idea how to put this shit into words or figure out what it means. But then Crystal brought it up, and you know what sheâs like â sheâs direct about shit. And it really helped. She kinda put everything about this into perspective. âCause, like, I was trying to find someone to compare my feelings to, to figure out if I felt the same, but, like, Iâve never been in love. I donât know what that feels like. Sure I had a couple of girlfriends when I was alive but that was just typical teen romance, doing it just because it was expected of you and because it felt good. It was never proper love. All I knew was that you werenât like anyone Iâve ever known. And Crystal helped me realise that maybeâŚâ
Charles held Edwinâs hand tighter.
Edwin tried not to breathe too heavily, looking up at Charles with such hope and love and relief in his eyes.
âMaybe Iâve been in love with you since the start. I knew you were different, but we just clicked so well I didnât even realise what that difference was, that it was deeper. Youâre my best friend above everything else, but thereâs definitely something else too. I just needed a little help to see it.â
âCharles, what are you saying?â Edwin asked.
He knew what he was saying. Of course he did. But he couldnât quite believe it, so he asked anyway.
Charles reached his other hand out and tipped Edwinâs head up slightly by his chin, ensuring they were making eye contact.
âIâm in love with you. Always have been.â
Edwin couldnât help the soft surprised noise that escaped his throat.
âCharlesâŚwhy were you getting so stressed about this? You know you could have told me before it got to this point.â
âI know, itâs justâŚI think it took a while for me to realise I could have this. Like, obviously I knew you felt the same, butâŚI didnât feel worthy? Almost. I donât know. I never- I never really knew what proper romantic love was. My parents, maybe they were in love once, before I came along, but I donât remember it. The only long-term romantic relationship I really knew was one full of fear and like, tension. And abuse. I guess I just worried I might not know how to do this, so maybe you wouldnât want to. I dunno, itâs stupid.â
âNo. Itâs not stupid, Charles.â
Edwin held Charlesâs hands under his own chin.
âWell, the idea that you arenât worthy of my love is preposterous, but I understand why you might have felt like that. I know your family werenât the image of love you wanted to see growing up. I canât exactly say my own were either. But I promise you; your love, in all its forms, is beautiful. You might not think you know how to do this, but youâre doing it brilliantly. Even if you didnât feel the same romantic inclinations I do, you are enough. Youâre so, so much more than enough.â
âReally?â
âReally.â
Charles couldnât hold back any longer â he surged forwards, wrapping his arms around Edwin. It was awkward, with Edwin still sitting in the chair, so Edwin stood up. The two of them pressed up against each other, holding the other close as though they could disappear at any second.
Edwin only held him closer when he heard a quiet sniffle come from Charles.
âI love you,â he mumbled into Edwinâs shoulder, and Edwin swore a rush of warmth flooded his cold dead heart.
âI love you too,â Edwin replied. âMore than anything.â
When they broke apart, they simply looked at each other for a moment, soft smiles on their faces.
âCan I kiss you?â Charles asked, and Edwin didnât think heâd ever heard him sound so quiet, his mind so still.
âOf course you can.â
Edwin had been dreaming about this moment for a while, no matter how hard he tried not to. Every so often, his thoughts would wander to what Charlesâs lips would feel like against his own, whether their kisses would be hungry and passionate or soft and gentle â or a little of both.
He always imagined, in the rare instances that he allowed himself to ponder the potentiality of Charles one day feeling the same way, that their first kiss would be quick, in the heat of the moment. Charles had always been an impulsive person, so he imagined this would be no different. Perhaps theyâd be out on a case and Charles would pull him aside, crush their lips together and whisper a hurried âtalk later?â before getting back to the task at hand.
Edwin had never been happier to be wrong. Obviously, he wouldnât have predicted or asked for the circumstances that led up to this, for Charlesâs emotional conflict and physical and emotional exhaustion, but this moment, their lips meeting softly in the early evening light that poured in through the office window, was perfect.
When their mouths separated, Edwin kept his eyes closed for a few seconds, just revelling in the moment. Then, he opened them and oh he was glad he did â Charles looked incandescently beautiful standing before him, his lips slightly parted, his eyes huge and focused on him.
They both moved together for a second kiss, resting their foreheads against each other when their lips broke apart, as though being even centimetres apart from one another was a curse.
âIâm sorry, about the stress, and about theâŚorb-ing thing,â Charles said quietly, and Edwin swore he could feel breath against his own lips. That wasnât possible, though. Ghosts didnât breathe.
âCharles, itâs alright. Iâm just glad youâre not suffering without telling me. Besides, we finally had an opportunity to explain our exhaustion symptoms to Crystal. You gave her a very confused fright when she first walked in and saw you.â
âOh, I bet.â
Both of them laughed, heads falling onto each otherâs shoulder.
When they separated, Edwin took a step back. But Charles kept his hand where it was on Edwinâs waist.
âCan weâŚgo to the sofa? I donâtâŚwanna let go just yet.â
Edwin just smiled, smitten.
âOf course, Charles.â
The two of them settled together on the sofa â it was a little bigger than their old one, but still too small to fit two nearly six feet tall teenage ghosts if they wanted any semblance of space between them. Luckily, these two ghosts specifically werenât bothered about space.
Charles positioned himself practically on top of Edwin, curled up on his chest, quiet and still. Edwinâs arms wrapped around Charlesâs waist, keeping him close. Heâd never really known quite how much he wanted this â how much he craved this â just being this close to the boy he loved most, touching in any way they could. Charles shuffled impossibly closer, nuzzling his face into Edwinâs neck in the same way he had earlier while in his orb form. The only difference was this time, Charles left gentle kisses there too. This time, he could definitely feel the warmth of Charles pressed against him. This time, there was no stress, no anxiety, no panicking. This time, the two of them were all that mattered.
They held each other tightly. Two spirits, at their core just bundles of pure energy, transforming that energy into love for the other.

the way i love the ocean
Port Townsend was quite a sweet little town, Crystal thought as she wandered past the lighthouse gift shop. Well, it was if you ignored the witch kidnapping young girls and feeding them to the snake in her basement. And the peculiar half-cat-half-man living near the docks. Crystal had decided to go exploring a little â if that bracelet really did mean Edwin was stuck in town and theyâd be sticking around for longer, she figured she should at least get to know the place.
It was serene and peaceful near the lighthouse. The gift shop made it seem like it should be a tourist spot, but there was barely anyone around, only the sound of waves hitting rocks and seagulls soaring overhead. She decided to sit for a while, and perched herself on the edge of one of the rocks, her feet dangling just above the water.
It was the most at peace sheâd been since she could remember. For a moment, the salty air and the gentle sounds of the water made her forget all about her missing memories, about the demon trying desperately to get back inside her head, about how stressed her parents surely were about her whereabouts. For a moment, it was just her and the landscape.
That was, until something caught her eye. A few metres away from where she was sitting, a small area of the water appeared to be glowing a bright pink, and Crystal found herself unable to look away, transfixed by the mysterious sight. The lights seemed to dance, a few blurry shapes moving around like fish â but they couldnât be fish â could they? Either way, it was captivating. Without even thinking, she leaned closer to them, trying desperately to look at them in more detail. She was dangerously close to falling into the water.
The lights suddenly intensified, and something breached the surface surrounded by those overwhelming colours â a girl. She was beautiful, her long dark hair flowing down over her shoulders as she floated, staring right at Crystal.
âHi,â Crystal said softly, unable to control the smile on her face or the softening of her eyes. She was almost as transfixed by the girlâs face as she was by the strange lights.
Crystal felt an overwhelming desire to befriend this strange girl, to know her, to care for her.
âHi,â the girl replied, in a voice as sweet as her appearance.
Then without warning, the girl ducked back under the water, and the light disappeared. Crystal snapped out of her trance, looking around her as if sheâd imagined the girl altogether and had embarrassed herself in front of people talking to no one. But there was no one else there to judge her anyway.
âHello?â she asked the water.
The water didnât reply.
Eventually, Crystal gave up. Besides, it was getting cold, so she decided to return to the Tongue and Tail.
She left again the next day. She hadnât intended to be out for long; she only wanted to make a point. The whole Edwin-is-stuck-in-town situation had put the three of them on edge, and with the way they kept talking about everything that was happening with David, Crystal just couldnât handle being around them for long. Sheâd snapped at them, leaving the Tongue and Tail in a huff, cursing under her breath. She hoped Jenny hadnât been too concerned.
Crystal walked aimlessly yet soon found herself near the lighthouse again, sitting on that same rock overlooking the water. It sparkled in the light of the setting sun, reflecting pinkish orange all around. It was beautiful, but she couldnât help but think how much more beautiful those bright lights had been around the mysterious girl. She watched as the sun sank below the horizon, the sky growing darker. Just as she thought she should probably head back to Jennyâs, something â or someone â erupted from the water in front of her. Crystal gasped in shock, relaxing when she realised it was just the girl from yesterday, her dark hair flowing past her shoulders in the same satisfying way it had before. She appeared to be wearing the same bikini top from the day before, and Crystal couldnât help but think she must be freezing in there at this time in February.
âJesusâŚyou made me jump.â
The girl just looked at her, smiling sweetly, and Crystal noticed the tiny reflections in her irises, like miniature stars sparkling in her dark eyes. The girl opened her mouth as if to say something but instead of words, a spew of strange rainbow goo erupted from her mouth, and she immediately lost consciousness. She sank below the surface.
Crystal panicked, immediately shedding her heavy purple coat and floral platform boots before diving into the water. She didnât remember ever being a particularly strong swimmer but she couldnât just leave this girl to drown.
The water was dark, and even darker at night. Crystal couldnât see more than a few inches in front of her, so reached her arms out, flailing them around until she caught hold of a wrist and pulled the girl towards her. She was about to return to the surface when, upon holding her waist to hoist her upwards, she found scales there rather than smooth skin. She didnât have time to think about it, dragging her upwards. She pushed her onto the rock sheâd previously been sitting on, climbing out with her.
âWoahâŚâ she said, upon spotting the girlâs pink fish tail.
She didnât wake up, and for a moment Crystal panicked that she did the wrong thing, pulling her out of the water. What if she wasnât waking up because she physically couldnât breathe? Alarmed, Crystal reached up to her neck, expecting to find some form of gills there. There was nothing. From the waist up she seemed like a perfectly normal girl. And she did appear to be breathing, if shallowly. In that moment, Crystal decided she was going to stay there with her until she woke up.
âCrystal!â a familiar voice called out a while later.
âCharles?â Crystal replied, turning around to see him and Edwin walking down the steps towards her.
âThere you are! God, we were getting worried-â Charles said, pausing upon spotting the girl in Crystalâs arms. âWhoâs that?â
âI donât know her name,â Crystal said. âShe was justâŚshe was here yesterday but she disappeared then she came back today, puked some weird rainbow goo then passed out. I grabbed her so she didnât sink and then realisedâŚyeah, that,â she pointed at the bright pink scales where the girlâs legs would be.
âHow long has she been out of the water?â Edwin asked.
âA couple of hours.â
âGet her back in, quick,â he said, indicating with his hands urgently. âIâm sorry Crystal but you may have to hold her. Mermaid scales cannot dry out, they are the source of their magic.â
âRight, okay,â Crystal breathed.
She jumped back into the water, then turned around and gently pulled the mermaid in with her.
âCan you read her? We need to find the reason behind this strange illness that appears to have befallen her.â
âI can try.â
Crystal took a deep breath, taking one of the girlâs hands in her own. She closed her eyes, and second later they burst open again, her dark irises this time replaced with pure white.
What she saw made no sense. She couldnât make much out, couldnât comprehend what was happening, could barely even keep looking at it. It was so bright, moving so quickly, just overwhelming shapes and colours.
âIâŚI canâtâŚIâŚâ she muttered, convulsing slightly.
âCrystal!â she could vaguely make out Charlesâs panicked voice. âCan you hear me?â
She focused intensely, eventually managing to tear herself away, pulling out of the mermaidâs consciousness.
âYou alright?â Charles asked.
âWhat did you see?â
âItâs justâŚbright colours. Nothing I can make out.â
Edwin scribbled something in his notebook. Crystal couldnât even remember him taking it out.
âRight,â he said, snapping the book shut and returning it to his pocket. âWeâll have to wait for her to wake up, then. For now, you stay here while Charles and I go and do some research based on what we currently know.â
âWhat? Youâre just gonna leave me here?â
âCrystal, to everyone else youâre already alone. Youâre likely the only one here who can see us,â Edwin reminded her.
âUgh, fine,â she complained.
âHey, weâll figure it out, yeah?â
Crystal nodded. She wasnât annoyed at them this time, or even at the fact she had been left alone with this stranger. In fact, the girl had intrigued her. The lights and the tail caught her attention, sure, but there was something else â something she couldnât quite put her finger on. There was a desire to know this girl, not just save her. The only thing causing her bad mood was the cold water surrounding her; she worried sheâd catch hypothermia if she had to stay there for long.
She looked up at where the boys had gone â they were on the path near the gift shop, and Crystal could just make out the image of Charles pulling a full-length mirror from his backpack.
Once the boys had disappeared through the mirror, Crystal turned back to the girl. She didnât look well, but beneath the illness, she was so beautiful. She had what appeared to be light blue eyeliner on her upper eyelid, curling into a small heart in the corner. For a moment, Crystal wondered whether mermaids had special waterproof makeup or if it was a natural marking. Only now did she notice that what she had originally assumed was a strapless bikini top wasnât actually an item of clothing, and was instead just part of her, the bright pink scales across her chest matching those of her tail.
She wondered if all mermaids were this gorgeous. As sheâd grown up, sheâd stopped imagining them as the brightly coloured cartoons she watched as a kid, and started imagining them more like other mythical creatures, dark and cunning and visually quite terrifying. But looking at the girl in front of her, it seemed like her eight-year-old self was right. She looked like sheâd crawled off the pages of an illustrated childrenâs book.
Crystal reached a hand up to move a piece of hair out of the girlâs face, when she began to twitch in her arms, waking up with a gasp. Seemingly upon instinct, she moved to push away from Crystal, but Crystal held on, worried sheâd lose consciousness again if she let go.
âHey, youâre okay,â she comforted. âYouâre okay, Iâve got you. Iâm Crystal. We met yesterdayâŚsort of.â
âOh,â said the mermaid, her gaze moving to where Crystalâs arm was around her waist. âYouâre holding me,â she said, her face flushing slightly.
âOh, yeah, sorry about that.â Crystal finally let go, assuming sheâd be okay staying awake given she was talking fine. âYou were unconscious, and I noticed you donât have gills or anything so I was kinda worried youâd drown.â
âThank you,â said the girl, floating barely three feet away from Crystal.
âWhatâs your name?â Crystal asked.
âNiko.â
It was a pretty name. It suited her perfectly.
âWell, Niko, Iâve got these friends, and theyâve gone to try and figure out whatâs wrong with you.â
Nikoâs mouth dropped open slightly, then she smiled.
âThatâsâŚpeople donât⌠people arenât usually this calm around me.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHumans seeing a mermaid? You think people are normal about that?ââ
âOh. Right.â
Sheâd almost forgotten that she was a literal supernatural being, not just a sweet, lonely, beautiful girl from the sea.
âYouâre not like that, though. You donât seemâŚsurprised.â
âI was a little surprised, I canât say Iâve exactly met a mermaid before but, wellâŚIâm a psychic, and my friends are ghosts, so⌠thereâs hardly anything that could really actually surprise me anymore.â
âOh. Well, thank you.â
Crystal smiled, then there were a few seconds of silence, both of them just floating in the water, before Niko spoke up again, moving closer.
âYouâre shivering!â
âOh,â Crystal said, her voice shaking slightly. âYeah, the waterâs a bit cold. Iâve been with you for a while, didnât want your scales to dry out.â
âCome with me,â Niko said, holding her hand out to her.
Crystal could do nothing except take it, letting herself be dragged through the water. Nikoâs hand was surprisingly warm against her own, and she felt the urge to grip onto her forever.
Niko led Crystal to a spot beneath some trees, surrounded by rocks. It was a small pool of water, that appeared to be bubbling like a hot spring. It certainly didnât seem like something that should be near a small coastal town in Washington.
âWhat-â Crystal began.
âA witch came by several years ago and put a spell on this pool. Itâll be like this until that witch dies now. The locals are so confused theyâre almost scared of it.â
âWoahâŚâ
âGo on, climb in! Youâre shaking.â
Crystal hoisted herself up onto and over the rocks, sliding into the pool. The warmth washed over her immediately and she sank into the water, only her head breaching the surface.
âBetter?â Niko asked, having followed her in.
âYeah. Thanks.â
âNo problem. Itâs the least I could do to say thank you. ButâŚdo you think your friends will still be able to find us here?â
âYeah, theyâre detectives, theyâll figure it out.â
âReally? So cool!â Niko said excitedly. âI wish IâŚâ
She trailed off into silence, staring into the water between the two of them, the smile gone from her face. Crystal stood up, snapping her fingers near her. There was no response. She didnât even blink.
âNiko? Hey, Niko!â she said, beginning to panic.
Nikoâs head snapped up to her, the pink lights returning, causing her to glow. Crystal was even more transfixed than she had been the day before, able to see that the lights werenât just colour, there were strange shapes too â like tiny starfish and bubbles floating around the top of her head.
She didnât know how long sheâd been staring before she was suddenly snapped out of it. The lights had disappeared, and Niko passed out again, slipping beneath the water. Crystal managed to catch her, holding her by the waist and ensuring she didnât hit her head on the rock.
âWoah,â she sighed.
She hoped the boys would be back soon.
âCrystal!â she heard from above them, and turned to face the voice.
âCharles! Weâre over here! Sheâs fainted again!â
Charles and Edwin rushed over to them. Charles sat on one of the rocks with a book in his hand, his legs dangling just above the water, while Edwin stood next to him, hands clasped politely in front of him like always.
âDid you figure out whatâs wrong with her?â Crystal asked, looking up at them desperately.
She couldnât stay in the water forever, but if they couldnât figure out what was wrongâŚhow could they possibly leave her? It was their job to help people and ghosts and supernatural creatures no matter what.
âYes, I believe we did,â Edwin said. âIt appears she has been possessed.â
âPossessed?â Crystal repeated, panicking.
Memories of David flooded back to her, of the way he manipulated her, stole her memories and still wouldnât leave her alone even after having been exorcised from her body. Niko didnât deserve to go through anything like that. No one did.
âNot a demon, though! Donât worry,â Charles reassured, having noticed her stress. âTheyâre sprites.â
âThank god. But what sprites?â
âTheyâre called dandelion sprites,â Edwin supplied. âThey form shrines in places with a high population of dandelions.â
âDandelions? But sheâs a mermaid. Where would she find dandelions?â
âSiphonophores.â
ââŚExcuse me?â
âUnderwater dandelions,â Charles explained. âTheyâre a particular type, and according to this book, their sprites can be even more of a nuisance than the common ones. They feed on attention, so at the bottom of the ocean, they have to work harder for their food. Then once they have it, they exit the host.â
âExit how?â
âHowever they can. But it usually isnât pretty.â
âJesus fucking Christ,â Crystal sighed, her mind moving at several thousand miles an hour. âRight, SoâŚwhat do we need to do?â
âWe need to find the shrine.â
âItâll be nearby underwater.â
âHow the fuck are we supposed to find an underwater shrine?â
âLuckily for us, ghosts do not need to breathe. Charles and I will find it.â
Charles seemed taken aback at that comment. His eyes widened in a panic and he turned to Edwin, his fingers fidgeting with the spine of the book in his hands.
âDâyou mind if I stay above the surface, mate? Iâll stick nearby the lighthouse in case you need anything butâŚyou know I donât do well with large bodies of water.â
âOf course, Charles,â Edwin said. âSorry I suggested it. I should have thought-â
âItâs all good, mate.â
With that, Charles and Edwin left the girls once more, heading over to the lighthouse. Crystal could see them from where she was in the spring, but they were too far away to hear what they were saying. Edwin jumped into the water without even taking any layers of his clothes off. Crystal supposed ghosts didnât really weigh anything if they didnât want to, so it wasnât a problem. Charles was just sat on the edge of the rocks, watching the spot where Edwin went under intensely. A few minutes later, Edwin resurfaced and held his hand out to Charles. Charles reached into his backpack, retrieving something from it and handing it to him. She couldnât tell what exactly it was, but knowing them and their bag of tricks it could have been literally anything. Edwin swam beneath the surface once more.
Crystal jumped when she felt Niko move in her arms. She looked down, expecting to see her waking up like she had before, but instead she was convulsing slightly.
âNiko?â
All of a sudden, her eyes and mouth flew open, and that bright pink light came pouring out of her. Crystal was significantly more terrified of the lights this time. She had to look away for fear of being too lured in by their compulsion.
âNiko!â
Two voices then began talking through Nikoâs mouth without even moving it, propelling the girl upwards so she was sitting on Crystalâs lap.
âLook at us. Behold us. Give us what we want, or we will tear the girl asunder and find a new nest.â
Then, the lights disappeared and she fell backwards once more, Crystal catching her head.
âWhat the fuck,â Crystal muttered as Niko started to come around.
Her nose was bleeding, so Crystal wiped the blood away with her thumb.
âWhat happened?â the mermaid asked shakily.
âIâm not really sure, but the boys will be back soon, I promise.â
Crystal pointed over to the lighthouse, where Charles was still intently watching the surface of the water. A few minutes later, Edwin breached the surface once again, handing something to Charles. It was a different object to whatever it was Charles took out of his backpack â bigger, rounder.
Then, Charles stood up and began walking back over to the spring, while Edwin ducked under the surface and swam towards them instead. He dragged himself up onto one of the rocks Niko was propped up against, his hair and clothes soaking. But the second he stood up, he was dry once more.
âWoah,â Niko muttered.
âOne of the perks of being a ghost: youâre never soaked for long,â Edwin said proudly.
âDid you find anything?â Crystal asked, still slightly shaken from what had happened. âThe sprites, I think they likeâŚspoke through her.â
âIf the sprites themselves have begun communicating with you, weâd better hurry. She likely doesnât have long.â
âSo what so we do?â
âThere was a shrine down there, just at the base of the lighthouse. I managed to read the inscription. The sprites require sacrifices to keep them alive, but. This-â Edwin indicated to the glass jar Charles was holding up, âis the only thing that can contain them. We just need to find a way of coaxing them out of Niko.â
Everyone was quiet for a few seconds while they thought. Then, Crystal spoke up.
âUse me as bait.â
âNo,â Charles said immediately.
âAny other ideas, Charles? You said they could explode out of her at any minute, we canât wait much longer.â
As if hearing Crystal, Niko began to convulse once more.
âCrystal, you canât-â
âThereâs no time for this!â
âAre you sure, Crystal?â Edwin checked.
âYes,â she turned to Charles. âI trust you.â
Crystal managed to position Niko on the rocks so she wouldnât fall off despite the convulsions, and stepped over to the other side of the spring. Charles carefully stepped into the water, seeming to relax a little upon realising it wasnât cold.
âYou donât have to do this, you know.â
âI do. And even if I didnât, I would.â
It had barely been a day since sheâd met this girl, but she felt a strange attachment to her. She got the feeling many people didnât like her before everything happened with David, so knowing there was someone who liked having her around, someone who appreciated her, someone who didnât try to push her away, was nice. And even better that it was someone as sweet as Niko â who was suffering through being possessed by sprites and throwing up rainbow goo and fainting all over the place, and yet still insisted on warming Crystal up when she was cold. She wanted to know Niko better, to become friends. She supposed mermaids must not have that many friends, trapped in the ocean as they were, so she wanted to be there for her.
Just as Crystal was imagining coming down to the docks every day to see her and get to know her properly, her thoughts were cut short by the ceasing of Nikoâs thrashing. She had to do something before it was too late.
âI need to talk to the things inside Niko,â she said. âThe dandelion sprites. I have a really attractive offer.â
Nikoâs body suddenly sat up, the light bursting from her eyes and mouth once more.
âInsolent child. Left us to starve. Now watch while we desert this flesh.â
No. No, no, no. It wasnât working. Crystal had to do something, she couldnât just let those things tear the poor girl apart.
âNo, wait!â she was trying not to cry. âI have something you want!â
âWhat could you have to satiate us?â
âMe.â
She could feel the boysâ gazes turn to her in fear.
âMy body is all yours if you leave Niko without hurting her.â
âCrystal, have you gone mental?â she heard Charles say, but ignored him.
âNiko, she has a family! You canât take her away from them! I donât have a place. I donât belong anywhere, please just take me instead!â she yelled desperately.
âAnother body just means another hunger.â
âBut Iâm different. Not only could you leave the water and get attention from everyone in this town, Iâm also a psychic medium! I can see the dead! Imagine the feast you could have feeding off attention from the living and the dead! Best of both worlds! You could eat your fill! Thatâs what you want, right? Youâd never go hungry again!â
Suddenly, Nikoâs body began to rise into the air, her limbs dangling downwards while the light shone up, as thought she was being propelled upwards. The sprites cackled, and the entire docks seemed to be illuminated by bright pink.
Then, it all stopped. Nikoâs body dropped back down onto the rocks. Crystal swam towards her a little, keeping Charles in the middle, hoping and praying that Niko was okay.
There were quiet spluttering sounds from Nikoâs mouth as the two tiny sprites crawled out. They turned around, and upon spotting Crystal, leapt upwards towards her. Crystal panicked and couldnât move, but luckily Charles got in between them, catching the little blighters in the jar and sealing the top.
Both breathed heavily. Theyâd done it.
âYou cut it kind of close, there,â Crystal chuckled.
âYouâre welcome.â
Niko weakly shuffled across the rock until she could drop herself back into the water. Crystal was about to follow her, but Charles held her back.
âGive her a minute, yeah? Sheâll be fine.â
She was under the water for much longer than a minute. Crystal and Charles had been sitting on the rocks talking for a while â Crystal had to shut down Charlesâs flirting yet again, and he seemed to get the message this time, apologising. They both laughed about it.
âWell, the case isnât totally over yet,â Charles said. âWeâve got to go back to that shrine and kill the dandelions before they can infect anyone else. Wouldnât want an army of rainbow-spewing sea creatures on the loose around here.â
Crystal chuckled, and at that moment, something breached the surface in front of them.
âNiko?â Crystal said incredulously.
It was definitely her, the same gorgeous eyes and bright pink scales, but her hair was no longer dark â it was bright white.
âHoly shit, your hair!â
âI know, I look amazing,â Niko said, running a hand through her own locks.
âThe spritesâ handiwork,â Edwin commented, stepping across the rocks towards them.
âHow are you?â Crystal asked.
âIâm good. Thank you. For everything.â
Niko used the rock to push herself out of the water, and pressed a damp yet surprisingly warm kiss to Crystalâs cheek as she sat beside her. Crystal tried to hide her blush, but she could already hear Charles snickering next to her.
âItâs no problem, honestly.â
âNo, really. Iâve neverâŚthereâs never been anyone whoâs been as kind to me as you have. Ever since my dad diedâŚIâve been kind of alone.â
âWell, you donât have to be alone anymore,â Crystal said, and placed her hand on top of Nikoâs.
âButâŚyouâre not from here, right? Youâre gonna go back home soon. And I canât exactly swim the entire ocean,â Nikoâs smile faded.
âYeah, weâre hoping weâre not stuck here for too long but weâll come back here until then. And besides, Edwin knows magic. Iâm sure thereâs a spell that could let you walk. Right?â she turned to Edwin, a hopeful look in her eyes. âThereâs gotta be a spell that can turn her human, right? Little Mermaid-style?â
âYes, I believe there is such a spell in one of my transfiguration books. But, I wouldnât exactly call Niko little.â
âI wasnât- itâs a film- nevermind.â She turned back to Niko. âSee? We can do that. If youâd want to, that is.â
âReally? ThatâsâŚyes! ButâŚit wouldnât be permanent, would it? I donât want it to be permanent.â
âIâm sure we can find a temporary option, Niko,â Edwin confirmed.
âOh my god! Thank you! Iâd hug you if I could stand up.â
âItâs no problem,â Edwin chuckled. âAnd, Iâm not much of a hugging person anyway.â
âOh. Okay!â
They sat for a few moments, just watching the moonlight reflect off the waterâs surface.
âWait!â Niko said suddenly. âShouldnât you guys be going home? Itâs really late.â
âYeah youâre right,â Crystal said, her voice punctuated with a sudden yawn. âWeâll come back tomorrow though, yeah?â
âIâd like that.â
Crystal held her arms out to Niko, who collapsed forward, holding her tightly in a hug. She tried not to focus on the warmth that spread through her at the touch, at the knowledge that sheâd see Niko again the next day, and likely many days after that.
She had felt so alone since everything happened with David, even after meeting Charles and Edwin. She had felt so detached from reality without her memories, knowing barely anything about her own life. But now she had someone else â another lonely soulâŚwho just so happened to be a mermaid. Sheâd been wondering if maybe she hadnât been the greatest person before everything, but now sheâd been able to help someone, sheâd saved a life and Niko seemed so enamoured by her alreadyâŚmaybe she wasnât so bad after all.
day 7 of @palasakiweek !!
prompt: physical intimacy
summary: Niko Sasaki thought she had figured herself out - in terms of her identity, at least. She was confident in who she was...until she met one Crystal Palace, and suddenly things started getting a little more confusing. (chapter 1 is g-rated, chapter 2 is where it gets more explicit :))
notes: little disclaimer: nikoâs experience in this is loosely based on my own personal experience!! it may seem sort of reminiscent of the annoying âyou just havenât met the right personâ stereotype but this is obviously just one way of being aspec!! the âright personâ stereotype is a stupid assumption and obviously isnât a reflection of everyone who identifies as ace, all experiences of sexual/romantic/gender identity are different and valid :) also this is the first e-rated fic i've ever written so if its bad uhh sorry (also if you know me irl no u don't <3)

found the place to rest my head (never let me go)
Niko awoke to the loud repetitive beeping of her alarm. She reached over to turn it off, but stayed lying down for a few minutes, just looking around her room. It was strange seeing all her things organised so differently â she may not have been living in Port Townsend for very long in the grand scheme of things, but sheâd gotten used to where everything was there; everything had its place in the one huge room that was her apartment. Now, it was all different. The bedroom itself was smaller, so her bookshelves had all been pushed together and there was less wall space for her many posters. It was a welcome change, but a month after moving in, she was still getting used to it. Although, anything was worth it when there were other things mixed in with hers. She wasnât alone anymore - she had Crystal. Crystalâs clothes were hung amongst hers in the surprisingly large wardrobe in their room, Crystalâs music posters joined her anime ones on the wall, Crystalâs long purple jacket hung right next to her thick green one on the back of the bedroom door. Having a roommate was brilliant, but even better that she was her girlfriend.
Niko rolled over, intending to gently wake the girl in question up â she always managed to sleep through the alarm somehow â only to find the other side of the bed completely bare, the space where Crystal should have been lying so cold, as though not having been slept on in hours.
Worried, she got out of bed, slid on her bright pink dressing gown and left the room. It really wasnât like Crystal to go anywhere without telling Niko first, especially this early in the morning on a day they were supposed to be meeting Charles and Edwin at the office.
âCrystal?â she asked into the quiet of the apartment.
ââMâin the kitchen,â came a quiet response.
Niko entered the kitchen to find Crystal sitting at their small two-seater table with a cup of coffee in her hands. Her hair was strewn everywhere and she had bags under her eyes as she smiled weakly.
âYouâre up early,â Niko said, walking over and dropping a kiss to the top of her girlfriendâs head on her way to the fridge.
âDoes it count as being up early if you didnât sleep in the first place?â Crystal replied as Niko poured herself a glass of orange juice.
âOh. You okay?â
âYâknow how I started my period yesterday?â
Niko nodded.
âYeah well, cramps decided to hit just as I was trying to get to sleep last night,â Crystal groaned, taking a sip of her coffee.
âOh no. Theyâre bad?â Niko put her glass down on the table across from Crystal, instead running her hand through her girlfriendâs hair. Crystal relaxed slightly. âDay 2 always hits you hard, doesnât it?â
âYep. Took painkillers at like 6, theyâre barely doing anything. What time is it now?â
âJust after 8."
Crystalâs eyeâs widened in panic.
âShit. We said weâd be at the office for 9.â
She made to move but Niko gently pushed her back into her chair, shaking her head.
âNuh uh. You need to rest,â she insisted.
âBut weâve got new clients coming in, Charles and Edwin-â
âCharles and Edwin have been doing this a long time, I think they can manage this one without us.â
âFine,â she grumbled, apparently unhappy with the idea; but Niko knew Crystal too well by now, could tell she was secretly relieved at not having to leave the flat. âWait, without us? You donât have to stay, you know. Iâll be fine.â
âBut I want to.â Niko leaned down again, this time pressing a kiss to her forehead. Crystalâs eyes closed and she smiled. âIâll go tell the boys.â
Niko headed into the living room and picked something up from the coffee table. At first glance, the object looked like a simple rock, like something a child would bring home from a day at the beach. However, it was actually one of two communication devices they had received as payment for a recent case. They were similar to the Spirit Finder stones the boys already had, only these ones were connected to each other, and worked like an audio texting device between any two locations. There was a phone in the office, but Edwin had insisted they use these stones â the phone was for clients only.
She tapped the rock three times, waiting for it to glow white to indicate the connection. She thought it was wild how easily her mind had adapted to the existence of such magical objects. But, she supposed, a lot of things become much more believable after you have two troublesome sprites try to rip you open from the inside, and then get killed by an evil witchâs spell but survive because of a magical bear stone and live in an alternate dimension for a few months until you find a way out. Yeah, that makes a lot of things easier to take in.
âHey guys!â she spoke into the rock. She didnât feel the need to check they were there; they always were, especially when the girls were due to go over. âReally sorry but me and Crystal arenât gonna be there today! Crystal barely slept last night, sheâs on her period and sheâs not feeling too great so weâre gonna stay home and chill. Hope everything goes well with the new clients!â
She tapped the rock once again to end the message, and waited for a few seconds. Sure enough, the white glow returned and Charlesâs voice sounded from the device. None of them had any idea how the sound came from the stone â there were no speakers â but who were they to question magic?
âHey Niko! Thatâs fine, weâll manage without you guys. Hope Crystalâs feeling better soon and weâll see you tomorrow, yeah?â
Three taps.
âYeah, hopefully!â
Niko went to return to the kitchen, but suddenly remembered something, and turned back into the living room, making a beeline for the bookshelf. She pulled a handmade square of quilted fabric off a large mason jar, and was met with groans of disapproval from its residents.
âToo fucking bright!â
âSeriously, are you trying to blind us?â
Kingham and Litty had also returned to the plane of the living when Niko did, and the others continued trying to convince her to get rid of them. Niko had refused. They had, after all, helped her come back, so it was the least she could do to not, you know, drown them or anything. Sheâd mentioned wanting to free them but changed her mind when she was met with looks of horror from Edwin and Charles.
âWe really donât need a dandelion epidemic in the middle of London, Niko.â
âYeah I think keeping them in the jar is for the best.â
Theyâd complained, but didnât seem too upset with the outcome when theyâd been bought a bigger jar. And in the end, Crystal agreed to living in the same apartment as them, as long as they werenât in their bedroom. So, the bookshelf it was.
âLook, Iâm sorry for waking you but I need to talk to you.â
âWhat is it?â
âSeriously whatâs so important you need to wake us up at the fucking ass-crack of dawn.â
âFirst, itâs like 8am! Thatâs a normal time to wake up. Second, you guys really need to be less you today.â
âThe fuck is that supposed to mean?â
âCrystalâs on her period,â Niko explained. âSheâs not feeling great and I really donât want her having to deal with yourâŚyou-ness.â
âOh boo-hoo!â
âHey! Sheâs in pain! Wait- do sprites get periods?â
âWhy do you care?â Litty asked, seemingly offended.
âShe does,â Kingham nodded, and Litty groaned.
Niko really wanted to ask what exactly a sprite period consisted of given they were trapped in a jar, but she couldnât get a word in because within thirty seconds, they were yelling at one another.
âGuys! This is exactly what we donât want. Can you just likeâŚbe quiet for one day please?â
âUgh, fine!â
âCan you at least put the cover back on? If we canât talk I at least wanna get some fucking sleep.â
With that, Niko placed the quilt back over the jar, blocking out most of the light. She took a deep breath before returning to the kitchen. Sheâd grown attached to the sprites, especially since they spent so long together in that weird inter-dimensional igloo, but god they could be assholes sometimes.
âGladly,â Niko replied. âNow be good.â
âWere you just talking to the sprites?â Crystal asked as she walked in.
Niko didnât know if sheâd heard them or if she could tell based on her tense expression. Probably both.
âYep. Theyâve promised theyâll be quiet today,â Niko picked up her glass of orange juice and took a sip, stepping over to stand right next to Crystal.
âReally? You sure they didnât have their bitchy little fingers crossed behind their backs?â Crystal looked up at her, raising her eyebrows knowingly.
âOkay they probably did. But donât worry, they wonât disturb us.â
âThanks.â Crystal leaned into Niko. âWhat did the boys say by the way?â
âCharles says he hopes youâre feeling better soon.â
âThatâs sweet. Theyâre sure theyâll be fine without us? I feel bad.â
âCrystal, theyâll be fine. They were fine for thirty years before us, right?â
âDebatable,â Crystal snorted.
She had a point.
âStill. You need to rest.â
âFine.â
âCome on, wanna cuddle on the couch?â Niko stepped back, offering her hand to Crystal.
âGod, yes,â Crystal replied, taking it.
Niko pressed a quick kiss to Crystalâs lips before Crystal headed into the living room.
âYou go get comfy, Iâll be there in a minute.â
Nothing felt comfortable. Crystal tried to find a position on the sofa that didnât feel like something was trying to claw its way out of her abdomen chestburster-style, but to no avail. She groaned, having given up trying after five minutes, when Niko walked in. She had two blankets over one arm and was holding a hot water bottle in the other.
âI didnât know which blanket youâd want so I got the fluffy one and the thin one. I donât want you getting too hot.â
âThanks Niko,â Crystal smiled at how sweet her girlfriend was. âI think Iâll be alright with the thin one, especially with the hot water bottle as well.â
âOkay.â
Niko handed her the hot water bottle and the thinner blanket, folding the fluffy one up and placing it on the floor in front of the sofa just in case.
âAndâŚâ Niko started, reaching into the pocket of her dressing gown and pulling out a chocolate bar.
âItâs like 8am,â Crystal laughed, taking it from her and putting it on the side table next to the sofa.
âSo? Youâre allowed chocolate at 8am when youâre on your period. Itâs likeâŚthe law or something.â
âThank you.â
âSorry that itâs just what we had in the cupboard, I can get dressed and go out and get you your favourite if you want-â
âNiko,â Crystal stopped her. âItâs great. Youâre already doing more than enough for me, now come and sit down I need you.â
âOh? What do you need?â
Niko sat down beside her on the sofa. Crystal immediately snuggled up next to her, her head on Nikoâs chest and the hand not holding the hot water bottle resting on Nikoâs knee.
âJust this,â she sighed.
âAh. I can do this,â Niko replied, wrapping one arm around her and placing the other hand on top of Crystalâs, intertwining their fingers. âYou comfy?â
âYeah.â
It was nice, just sitting there in silence wrapped up in one another. It was quite the change to their usual day-to-day activities of running around London chasing after spirits and demons. Niko loved moments like these with Crystal, where she was calm and relaxed rather than her usual fiery, snarky, occasionally short-tempered self. Of course, Niko loved that Crystal too. She loved all of her, even the parts she was still trying to accept. Because no matter how mean sheâd been in the past, no matter how often she lost her temper or started an argument with Edwin, she was still the person who offered her life for Nikoâs after barely knowing her for two days, the person who became her friend when it felt like she was entirely alone, the person who tried her best to help her deal with her grief from her dad and convince her to get back into contact with her mom, the person who held her and cried for her as she died and was the first to pull her into a hug when she returned. She was gorgeous and messy and imperfect, and Niko loved her. She held her closer on the sofa, her hand running through her dark curls.
âIâm kinda glad weâre not working,â Crystal said after a few minutes. âI donât know if I could handle EdwinâsâŚEdwin-ness today.â
âHeâs not that bad.â
âI know, I know. Heâs my friend and I love him like a brother at this point butâŚGod, he can be frustrating at times. I feel like Iâd just end up yelling at him when Iâm this tired and likeâŚhormonal.â
âItâs not your fault,â Niko comforted.
âI know that too, itâs just, since I got my memories backâŚlike, I was so mean before. I really donât wanna be that person anymore.â
âHey.â Niko squeezed the hand she was still holding and kissed Crystalâs head. âYouâre not. Who you were in the pastâŚI know sheâs technically still part of you but youâre not that girl anymore. Youâre kind, and compassionate, and beautiful and sure, sometimes you and Edwin end up at each otherâs throats a little but that doesnât make you a bad person. Like you said, youâre like siblings. Most people are like that with their siblings, I think.â
Crystal looked up at her. In their position, it was difficult but neither really wanted to move.
âThanks Niko, that reallyâŚit means a lot.â
âWell, itâs true.â
Niko leaned down the few centimetres necessary to press a kiss to the tip of Crystalâs nose, making her giggle softly.
âWanna watch a movie?â Niko asked.
âSure."
âWhat do you wanna watch?â
âI dunno,â Crystal shrugged. âYou pick.â
Crystal nodded as Niko reached for the remote.
âYou sure?â
⥠⢠âĄ
Four hours went by in a comfortable domestic quiet, the two of them cuddled up together on the sofa watching the movies Niko picked, until the credits began rolling at the end of Princess Mononoke and Niko heard Crystalâs stomach rumble.
âYou hungry?â she asked.
âYeah, I didnât exactly eat breakfast this morning. The only thing Iâve eaten is that chocolate we shared halfway through the first movie.â
âIâll go and make lunch, what do you want?â
âI dunno,â Crystal shrugged again.
âYouâre really not up for making decisions today, huh?â Niko giggled.
âNo,â she laughed.
âWanna try some of my noodles? Theyâre always good when Iâve got cramps.â
âSure, what kind are they?â
âWell, my favourite ones are the chilli ones but you might not want those. Spicy and cramps donât tend to mix. I think weâve got some chicken ones in the cabinet too, theyâre the ones I usually find helps with the pain.â
âSure.â
âI mean theyâre nowhere near as good as the chicken udon my mom used to make, but theyâre still good.â
âIâll take your word for it,â Crystal chuckled.
âIâll go make them, you choose the next movie while Iâm gone,â Niko said, untangling her limbs from where they had become indistinguishable from Crystalâs and standing up. âThis is supposed to be your day and so far, weâve watched two Studio Ghibli movies.â
âHey, I like Ghibli too!â Crystal argued.
âI know but I was the one who chose them so itâs your turn.â
Niko leaned down to press yet another kiss to the top of Crystalâs head before heading into the kitchen. Crystal smiled to herself â that was the fourth head kiss today and it was barely the afternoon. It had become their thing over the last couple months, and had begun when theyâd only just got together, back when they were living out of the rarely used spare room of Charles and Edwinâs office. (After the girls finally got a place of their own, with funds from both Crystalâs parents and the Agencyâs steady stream of clients helping to pay their rent, the boys redecorated the bedroom for themselves. Crystal didnât ask why two people who physically couldnât sleep needed a bedroom. She didnât want to know.) Whenever Niko left a room, or entered it, or whenever she liked, really, she would kiss the top of Crystalâs head. At first, it was Niko playing on their height difference, the fact her lips were at Crystalâs head-height unless Crystal was wearing her platform boots, but it had become such a routine for them there were no signs of it stopping. Even Edwin found it sweet, though he seemed to feel that way about almost everything Niko did. That was one of the many things the two of them had in common: their overwhelming love for one Niko Sasaki.

Niko returned several minutes later, a pot of noodles in each hand. She handed one to Crystal.
âHope you like them. Oh, and donât forget to take some more meds, you couldâve had some like two hours ago.â
âShit, yeah,â Crystal swore, moving to get up.
Before she could, Niko pulled the box of tablets out of her pocket.
âThank you,â Crystal sighed.
Soon, the two of them were resettled on the sofa to start the next movie, both with a pot of noodles in their hands, still leaning as far into each otherâs space as they could without causing a food-related accident.
âJeez, I can smell the spice from here,â Crystal laughed.
âYup,â Niko replied.
âCan I try some?â
âAre you sure?â
âYeah.â
Niko twisted some of the noodles around the fork, as Crystal leaned forwards to eat them off it. She swallowed, then immediately started coughing.
âHoly shit!â
âYou okay?â Niko asked, worried and reaching for the glasses of juice sheâd poured them while the noodles were cooking.
âYep. JustâŚwasnât expecting them to be that spicy.â
âToo hot?â
âNo, they were good. I like them, I just⌠yeah I donât think theyâd pair well with the current state of feeling as though my uterus is trying to claw its way out of my body.â
âOh noâŚâ
âThe noodles are helping, though. Thank you.â Crystal smiled, returning her attention to her own non-spicy pot.
âYou like them then?â
âYeah, theyâre so good.â
âGood. Did you pick a movie?â
âYep.â
Crystal picked up the remote, and pressed play. Niko recognised the film immediately.
âScooby Doo: The Movie? I said pick something you like.â
âHey I do like this! I was obsessed with this movie when I was like 9. It kickstarted my obsession with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Then I made my dad buy all the Buffy DVDs when I was 12, then that was my favourite show for like two years,â Crystal said proudly.
âWoah."
âYeah, imagine the shock on my face when I found out demons and supernatural beings and shit were real, and I was kind of one of them.â
âYouâre my favourite supernatural being,â Niko said proudly and leaned across to kiss Crystalâs cheek.
âShut up.â
âNope,â Niko grinned.
⥠⢠âĄ
âHey,â Niko said quietly, around 20 minutes into the movie. âDo you wanna pause the movie a sec? Iâll go put the pots in the trash.â
âSure.â
Niko stood up and went back into the kitchen, and when she returned less than a minute later, Crystal looked at her and laughed.
âWhat?â Niko asked.
âI just noticed, your lips are like, bright red.â
âThatâll be the noodles,â Niko giggled.
âYou look somehow even more kissable than normal.â Crystalâs head was tilted to the side slightly in the way it always was when she flirted.
âOh. Really?â
âMhm.â
Niko barely had chance to sit back down on the sofa before Crystal pulled her in, quickly connecting their lips. Niko kissed back gently at first, not wanting to cause Crystal any more pain than she was already in, but Crystalâs eagerness spurred her on and soon she was pulling her as close as physically possible, both of them seemingly attempting to devour each otherâs mouths. Niko tried her hardest to bite back the sounds threatening to escape her throat as Crystal took her bottom lip into her mouth and sucked.
Eventually, they broke apart, for no reason other than the need to breathe.
âFeeling better then?â Niko whispered.
âA little. Still feels like thereâs some kind of rave happening in my uterus, but itâs not as bad as it was earlier.â
âYay, the meds are helping.â
âI think itâs mostly you to be honest. And the noodles. But mostly you. Thank you for this.â
âOf course.â
As much as she wanted to pull Crystalâs lips back to hers, she knew they had all the time in the world for that. So, with one more kiss to the forehead, Niko gently pulled Crystal back into their cuddling on the sofa and pressed play on the movie once again.
⥠⢠âĄ
âYou up for another?â Niko asked after the end credits of Scooby Doo 2 finished rolling a few hours later. âWe could watch the 2009 movie, too. You might have had a thing for Sarah Michelle Gellar but I was obsessed with Hayley Kiyoko. Her as Velma was an awakening.â
âHmmâŚâ Crystal hummed into Nikoâs shoulder.
âAre you falling asleep?â Niko giggled.
âNo.â
Liar.
âYes, you are.â
âSânot my fault youâre comfy.â
âCome on, letâs get you to bed,â Niko shifted to move but Crystal held her still.
âItâs like 5pm. Youâre not tired.â
âI donât care. You need to sleep in a proper bed.â
Crystal gave in, allowing Niko to lead her into the bedroom and under the covers. Niko left the room, only to come back a few minutes later.
âI refilled your hot water bottle and brought you more meds,â she said, placing them down on the bed.
âThanks babe,â Crystal muttered, yawning.
After Crystal had taken more painkillers, Niko climbed into bed next to her. Crystal immediately resumed their cuddling from the sofa. Niko never would have expected Crystal to be the clingy type, but she is not complaining.
âYou know, Iâm genuinely shocked the sprites were actually quiet.â
âWellâŚwhen I made them their little quilt I may have asked Edwin to put a silencing charm on it. They were probably yelling at one another all day.â
âGenius,â Crystal laughed, burying her head into Nikoâs chest.
She seemed to have made a home on Nikoâs chest over the last few months. Even before they got together, they would cuddle up together on the sofa in the office while the boys were out, or in the spare room while they were there, and Crystal would lay her head on her chest, listening intently to her heartbeat as though making sure she was still there. Every time Niko would hum softly, ensuring Crystal felt the vibrations of the sound. It was her wordless way of replying, of reassuring her she was really there, she was back, and she wasnât going anywhere any time soon.
âThank you for today,â she said, her voice more of a mumble against Nikoâs pyjamas.
âYou donât need to thank me, itâs what Iâm here for.â
âItâs not though, youâre my girlfriend.â
âWell as your girlfriend, itâs my job to be here for you when your periodâs kicking your ass.â
âI really donât deserve you.â
âHey,â Niko gently took Crystalâs jaw and tipped her head up to look at her. âYes you do. We both deserve this. Well, you donât deserve to be in pain, but us lying here together, justâŚin each otherâs spaceâŚwe deserve this.â
Crystal still didnât fully believe her. Niko absolutely deserved it, but she still had doubts about herself. She still carried so much guilt for the horrible person she was before she met David, the even worse person she was once heâd really gotten to her. But, she supposed, if someone as intrinsically good yet painfully damaged as Charles could want to be her best friend; if someone as hurt and austere as Edwin could value her friendship and want her around despite their bickering; if someone as sweet and kind and loving as Niko could want her like this, could feel comfortable and safe with her in her arms and want to do everything to help her when she was feeling down, wellâŚmaybe she could believe it a little. Maybe she could accept that after everything, despite what she had done in her past, she did deserve something as good as the life she had now, wrapped in the arms of the girl she loved, who loved her so much in return.
âI love you,â she said, squeezing her arms around Nikoâs waist even tighter.
âI love you too.â
With one final kiss dropped into her curls, Crystal finally drifted into sleep.
-----
It was around 8pm when Charles picked up the communication stone that sat on one of the many shelves in the office and tapped it three times.
âHey guys,â he said into the rock. âJust letting you know today went great! It was just a run-of-the-mill haunting in the end, so itâs all sorted now, hope you two are doing okay!â
A minute passes with no reply.
âGuys?â he says again.
Still no reply. Charles put the rock back in its place and walked over to the mirror.
âCharles, you know they said we could only use their bedroom mirror in absolute emergencies,â Edwin said from the desk.
âTheyâre not replying! This could be an emergency, mate, what if some poltergeist or something got into their flat?â
Without thinking for a second, Charles reached out and tapped the mirror. Ripples appeared centred on the point he touched, and the image changed from a reflection of the office to the view of Crystal and Nikoâs bedroom from their dresser. Charles couldnât help but smile at the sight before him.
âTheyâre probably just asleep, Niko did mention Crystal barely slept last night.â
Edwin was right. The girls were both lying there, only their heads and shoulders visible poking out of the duvet, Crystalâs head on Nikoâs shoulder as they slept soundly.
âYeah, they are. Theyâre fine.â
âGood. Now, are you going to help me finish up this case file?â
ââCourse love.â
Charles took one last glance through the mirror at the two of them â curled up in each otherâs space, holding one another close, the very image of domestic bliss â before tapping the mirror once again, leaving the two of them to their peace.

chapter 2
The next day, the girls didnât take a rest day. Well, they had turned up to the office in the mid-afternoon with the intention of continuing work, but no new clients had shown up, so everyone was simply lounging around the office. Niko and Edwin were sat at the desk watching Scooby Doo on Nikoâs laptop, sharing her earphones, While Charles and Crystal sat on the tiny sofa. Crystal was mindlessly scrolling on her phone, while Charles was bouncing a tiny ball at the opposite wall.
âIâm bored,â Charles groaned dramatically.
This was all part of the plan, but it wasnât a lie. He enjoyed a chilled-out day as much as anyone else, but this was just getting dull.
âWeâve really got to do something as a group that isnât a case, âcause whenever we finish one you guys are too tired to do anything else.â
âI mean Iâm up for a group outing if youâve got any ideas,â said Crystal, looking up from her screen.
Niko and Edwin both removed their earphones.
âLucky for you guys, we just finished an episode,â Niko grinned.
âYouâre right, Charles, we should do something. We should go out!â
âGo out where, though?â Crystal asked.
âWell, if we donât want to do anything too physically strenuous after last night, we could always go into the town for the evening. We could go to a restaurant!â Edwin suggested, glancing towards Charles, who was smiling at him.
The plan was beginning.
âWould you two really wanna come with, though? I meanâŚyou canât eat, going to a restaurant seems kind of pointless,â Crystal reminded them.
âItâs not about the food, Crystal!â said Charles. âItâs about spending time with friends!â
âAnd Iâd love to spend time with you guys, but in a public place where people are gonna notice us talking to the air? Iâm fine with weird looks on the street, but surrounded by people sitting down, thatâs different.â
Ah. That was one part of the plan the boys hadnât thought of. Sure, they werenât actually going to be joining them, but they werenât going to know that.
âWell, if we go to the Italian round the corner from the library, theyâve got booths that are kind of tucked away in corners,â Charles suggested.
âAre you sure youâre not just saying that because you really miss spaghetti?â Niko giggled.
âOkay, you got me there, but it does have tables that are kind of hidden away, itâd be perfect!â
Crystal seemed hesitant.
âWell, Iâm up for it!â Niko said excitedly.
And how could Crystal say no to that face?
âSure, I guess. Want me to reserve a table?â she asked, already pulling her phone back out and searching for the restaurant.
âSounds like a plan,â said Charles, trying to hide a satisfied smile.
âWait! Donât reserve it too early, I need to get ready!â
âNiko, you look great as you are,â Crystal said.
âOh I know, but thereâs this one outfit Iâve got that Iâve been wanting to wear for ages,â she explained, dragging out her voice on the last word.
âShould we say 7pm then?â Edwin offered. âThat gives Niko chance to get ready, and for everyone to get there.â
âSure.â
âNiko, are you nearly ready?â Crystal knocked on the door of the room Niko was staying in for the week. âItâs nearly, 6:40, weâre gonna be laâŚâ
Crystalâs voice trailed off as the bedroom door opened, and Niko stood before her. She was in a monochromatic outfit: red wide-leg trousers with a sheer red collared shirt that allowed the thin-strapped top she was wearing underneath to be visible too. Her make-up matched the outfit, as it always did â red graphic eyeliner drawn into tiny perfectly-shaped hearts at the outer corners of her eyes.
âWhat do you think?â she asked, doing a little spin in front of Crystal, who was really trying not to stare in awe.
âNiko, you lookâŚâ Crystal tried to come up with an adjective that didnât give away the truth of her thoughts. She couldnât think of one, so she settled on the one she thought sounded the most casual. âYou look so pretty! The red is amazing.â
âI figured youâd be in purple, so I thought this would match a bit!â
Niko had been right â Crystal was wearing her purple mesh top and black dungarees, and had her purple coat ready to put on when they left. Theyâd certainly be a bright-looking pair, that was for sure.
âAnyway,â Niko started, leaning behind the door to grab her white chucks. Rather than sitting on the bed or the sofa to put the shoes on, she simply sat on the ground where she was, earning a quiet chuckle from Crystal. âWeâd better go, wouldnât want to keep the boys waiting!â
They grabbed their coats on the way out of the flat and left for the restaurant.
As it turns out, they neednât have stressed at all about being late because of the boys â they were nowhere to be seen when they arrived. They were led to their table, a booth in the back corner of the restaurant, out of view of most of the other tables. And, there was a huge mirror on the wall above it. Crystal assumed thatâs where the boys would come from, when they finally showed up.
Theyâd been seated for ten minutes, and had just put their food order in, and there was still no sign of Charles and Edwin.
âIâm just going to the bathroom,â Niko said, excusing herself from the table and heading to the opposite side of the room.
Crystal nodded at her, trying to subtly look around the whole restaurant, checking they really werenât there. âTheyâve probably gotten distracted with each otherâ she had been thinking, when she was scared out of her skin by Charles leaning out of the mirror.
âFucking hell!â she hissed, one hand over her chest in shock.
âOops, sorry,â Charles apologised.
âWhere the fuck are you guys? We said 7!â she said, not much louder than a whisper.
She knew no one could hear her, but it was still awkward talking to someone she knew no one else could see, especially since Niko wasnât there. Charles just chuckled.
âYeah, about thatâŚâ
âCharles. What have you done?â
âHey, I havenât done anything!â
âWell youâve got the scheming smile on your face so youâre up to something.â
âOkay fine. This was a set-up.â
âIâm sorry?â
âEdwin and I were never gonna come, we just tried to get you guys to go somewhere so you couldâŚyâknowâŚâ Charles smirked.
âSo we could what, Charles?â
âYâknow! Talk!â
Crystal closed her eyes and sighed in realisation.
âThis is your payback?â
âYep! And oh look, sheâs coming back! Have fun,â Charles winked as he retreated back into the mirror.
Crystal groaned, mentally cursing him, as Niko approached the table.
âAre you okay? Was that Charles I saw?â
âYeah,â Crystal said. âTheyâre not coming.â
âAwh! Why not?â
âUhh,â Crystal tried to come up with a lie. âThey had a case come up.â
âOh! Should we go help them? We can do this another night,â Niko turned towards the exit, but Crystal grabbed her wrist.
Niko looked down at where their skin touched, then back up at Crystal. When Crystal made eye contact with her, she let go immediately.
âNo, theyâll be fine without us for one case. And weâve ordered now, we should just enjoy our evening.â
âOkay. Yeah, I was looking forward to having a bit of a break,â Niko laughed as she sat back down. âWe deserve it.â
Niko was clearly tired. Was Crystal really about to bring up her feelings and stress her out even more? She knew it probably wasnât the best time, but when else was she going to do it? Sure, she was a tiny bit annoyed at Charles for the deception, but him and Edwin had practically set up a date for them, so it would be a shame to miss the opportunity.
Sheâd decided: she was going to do it.
She hadnât done it.
Theyâd nearly finished their food by now, and Crystal still hadnât figured out how to bring the topic up without shocking Niko. Sheâd been fidgeting in her seat the entire time, and Niko had noticed.
âCrystal, are you okay?â
âHmm?â Crystal hadnât fully heard her, too lost in her own thoughts. âOh, yeah, Iâm fine.â
âAre you sure?â
âYep.â
âIs it about Charles and Edwin? You donât have to worry, theyâll be fine! Like you said, they can handle one case without us, theyâve done it more than enough times before.â
âI know, itâs not about them.â
âItâs about something, then?â
Despite not caring what most thought about her, Niko really was amazing at reading people. This was her chance, Crystal supposed.
âThereâsâŚthereâs something I need to talk to you about.â
âOkay. You know you can talk to me about anything.â
âI know,â Crystal smiled. âItâs justâŚâ She took a deep breath. âSinceâŚeverythingâŚIâve been thinking, and Iâve realised some things.â
Niko nodded. She didnât say anything, didnât interrupt her. She was good like that. She could tell when a response was wanted and when people just needed to say what was on their mind.
âIt's not like I hadn't thought about it, like, Iâd had a bit of a moment before, but then, nearly losing you when we fought Esther, it really made me realiseâŚâ
Crystal was fidgeting with her hands again on top of the table, twisting a ring around her finger and not looking directly at Niko. Her hands started to shake slightly at the memory of Niko lying there on the ground, blood seeping from the wound on her chest and staining her shirt, eyes staring at her, glazed over, unblinking. Crystal couldnât bear to think about what would have happened if it werenât for that lucky bear Mick had given her. It had slowly closed the wound. She had still lost a lot of blood, and it took a while for her to recover, but she did. And now she was here in this restaurant with Crystal, who was desperately trying to put words together into sentences.
Niko had clearly noticed her shaking, and took her hands in her own, holding them tightly and smiling in encouragement.
âI think Iâm in love with you,â Crystal finally said, looking up at Niko.
Niko let go of her hand, her eyes widening in surprise.
âWhat?â
âIâm sorry,â Crystal apologised, moving her hands towards herself, away from Niko. âSorry if I made things weird.â
âNo!â Niko said, louder than she had intended. She reached out and took Crystalâs hands once more. âNo, that wasâŚI just wasnât expecting that.â
âOh.â
âIn a good way. IâŚI never thought youâd feel the same.â
Crystalâs jaw dropped slightly.
âYouâŚyou feel the same?â
âYes!â Niko said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Crystal couldnât do anything but laugh softly, and Niko joined her.
âSoâŚâ Crystal started. âDoes this mean youâll be myâŚgirlfriend?â She had her head tilted downwards slightly, looking up at Niko curiously through her eyelashes. It was so awkward, but in perhaps the best way possible. This was the first time sheâd ever felt awkward asking someone out, and it felt more right than anything.
âObviously!â
âCharles, I really do think we should give them some privacy,â said Edwin, standing in front of the mirror back at the office.
âI just wanna see how itâs going!â Charles argued. âCome on, you canât tell me you donât wanna be a fly on the wall for this.â
Charles raised his eyebrows slightly, smiling in that specific way he knew Edwin couldnât resist. Edwin sighed in defeat.
âOkay, Iâll admit I am intrigued. But I still do not think we should disturb them.â
âWe wonât, Iâll just open the mirror connection.â
Charles raised his hand towards the mirror, and Edwin nodded. Charles closed his eyes, picturing the mirror in the restaurant, and tapped the surface. The mirror seemed to ripple, still faintly showing the reflection of the office behind them but more importantly revealing the image of the two girls at their table. They sat opposite each other, both beaming with joy. They seemed to be playing with each otherâs hands on top of the table, interlocking their fingers.
âDo you think it went well?â Edwin asked, whispering even though he knew they couldnât hear them through the mirror.
âI think so! Oh, this is aces.â
They kept watching as a waitress walked over to their table. They let go of each other as Crystal paid for their meals, then they both stood up.
âShould we head home?â Crystal asked, her voice quiet and sounding vaguely as though underwater from where Edwin and Charles were stood.
She held her hand out to Niko, who, instead of taking it, leapt forwards out of the booth and hugged her tightly.
âSorry, just had to,â she giggled as she stepped back, intertwining her fingers with Crystalâs. "Yeah, let's go home."
âYes!â Charles cheered triumphantly, swinging his arm around Edwinâs neck and kissing his cheek in excitement.
âIâm glad our plan worked out for them,â Edwin said. âNow, letâs leave them be.â
âAlright,â Charles laughed, tapping the mirror to revert it back to its original reflective properties.
so...chapter 2 is up!!
