Personal Choice: 

John Lennon is not my favorite Beatle, but the influence he has had on my life has been large. For starters he was in the Beatles (that one’s obvious) and if it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be continuing learning guitar and I wouldn’t have one of my best escapes from the madness that this world breaks. Outside of that, the things I’ve read about him have helped me shape the way I see the world as well as the way I want to push for peace.  My favorite quote of all time (as of now) comes from Lennon when he was interviewed by Jerry Levitan.

Favorite Beatle song (sung by John): Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite

This is an impossible choice, but suffice to say, Mr. Kite is at least one of the best for me. There are a couple things that make it stand out for me…

- The vivid imagery is beautiful, and it’s beautifully paired with John’s voice which sounds like… a really, really bored PR man for this circus gig. It’s so colorful, and like it’s been run through a thousand times. Maybe his neutral tone gives me the space for my imagination to feel more free?

- I know that it has as much to do with George Martin (and probably Paul, et al) as it does John, but the instrumental parts are what really get me. When John announces “Henry the horse dances the waltz.,” he launches us off, following this waltzing horse into… well, I get lost. The horse guides me and then disappears and the song opens up like the unfurling of a Van Gogh, colors and lights swirling out of coherence and I am taken with them. And every time that instrumental happens I want to stay there; it feels like I could maybe stay suspended in it forever. The song gives me that small piece of wonder.

What’s your favourite Beatles song? (sang by him)

Narrowly squeezing this in for the first week of John Lennon Appreciation Month! I don’t think there is a John song I don’t like. There are many, many outstanding ones - A Day In The Life, Come Together, Across The Universe, Help!, All You Need Is Love… I could have picked lots, but I’ve chosen I Am The Walrus, the main reason being although this is a much loved song and a pub jukebox classic, I think I Am The Walrus is overlooked as a John Lennon masterpiece. It’s more than just nonsensical and fun, it’s not a throw-away song like it may appear on the surface, I think it’s one of John’s finest works, and here’s why…

I wasn’t gonna post anything for lennam since I’m in Canada for a bit buuut I feel a bit guilty for not doing so. Here is my answers just as..well answers. I don’t have time to make art to go with it so my apologies.

-What’s the cutest thing John has done?

I think him playing with little Nicola from the Magical Mystery Tour was very sweet. Showed a fatherly side to him that we don’t usually get to see.

- What was the strangest thing he’s done

Boy everything he did was very strange XD

I kid I kid…tho it’s true. Anyway I think the strangest would have to be those times he’s worn a dress. Both in the Shakespeare play and with Yoko for whatever reason

- What do you think he’d do if he was alive today?

I was introduced to John many times in the past. The furthest I can remember first hearing John was when I was very little. Every Christmas, his song Happy Xmas (War is Over) plays. I’d hear it everywhere, in the house playing on the radio, in the car, through the intercom at school. You get the point. It became pretty much an expectation for me to hear it, a lil radio tradition in my mind I’d go “oh yeah their playing this song again that’s cool”. I never really know however who sung it, just that it was a good song that they’d play during Christmas season.

The second time that I can remember encountering John, was at the Verizon. I was in about 4th grade. Whitney Houston had died around this time and I when I was getting on one of those test iPads that people use to check it out, I went on YouTube and lone behold there was a video involving her. I watched it and thought it was pretty good. It involved famous people who had previously died before, waiting to celebrate Whitney joking them. They included, Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Amy Whitehouse, and of course John Lennon. When I first saw him my first reaction in my 4th grade mind was, “is that Harry Potter?”. When we left I watched the video again and saw that someone said who everyone was. I remember looking up John briefly and then moving on to something else. Idk why but I jus did.

The declared time I met found out about John, was when I was 7th grade. My technology teacher wanted to teach us about how people way back then didn’t have the sort of technology that we had today (of course I already knew that). So he put on a video that talked about John’s death and how a guy that was next to him had to go to a payphone and call the news saying how John Lennon was in an accident and had to die. Blah blah Monday Night football, etc etc you guys know. But I felt sorta bad for this guy who I didn’t think I knew much about other than the fact that he was some singer. I even played out how his death probably went in my head as it was described for some reason like I do with books or something. It was nowhere close to how it really happened. After that tho it got me. But more curious about this guy and I just decided to find more out about him but not a lot yet.

What’s the cutest and craziest thing John did?

Well, I know this isn’t a thing, but I have to say his relationship with Cynthia was really cute. But she deserved way better. John was great and such, but he also was a dick to her. Their relationship was very stressful and rocky and she basically had to raise Julian alone. I just want to hug her.
