retaliatory julethief angst drabble for @julethiefs nova i love u and i’m sorry but i’m also not at all

“Carmen?” The voice came softly, gently settling over her ears. “Are you up yet?”

Carmen mumbled something utterly unintelligible that vaguely sounded like “Noitstooearlygoawayimsleeping.”

A gentle, musical laugh filled the room and suddenly Carmen wanted to wake up so she could make it happen all over again, forever. She turned her head to the side and was met with a messy-haired, glasses-wearing Julia, and- was that her nightshirt? Of course it was. Carmen wriggled her hand out of her blankets and brought her thumb up to brush Julia’s cheek.

“Mornin, Jules.”

Julia smiled softly and leaned further into Carmen’s hand. “I made waffles.”

Carmen yawned, feeling her entire body stretch out as she did so, and then slowly sat up. “Waffles sound amazing.”

Julia giggled at her still-sleepy voice and gently grabbed her hand. “C’mon, we don’t want them to get cold. They have fruit and syrup and everything.”

“All right, all right, I’m coming.” Carmen allowed herself to be pulled up and out of bed, and she padded into the kitchen, her fingers still intertwined with Julia’s. As they neared the table, Carmen slowed to a stop and pulled Julia back to her.

“Oh!” Julia gasped but then smiled shyly when Carmen cupped her face in her hands. Julia closed her eyes and began to tilt her head up, up, when suddenly her eyes opened again. 

“Is something wrong?” Carmen questioned nervously. Julia’s mouth opened. Closed. Her eyes grew wider. Carmen felt her breath begin to come faster and she slowly brought her eyes down. Her hands were now wrapped around Julia’s neck, tighter and tighter and tighter. And she couldn’t let go. Carmen felt tears spring to her eyes.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

For some inexplicable reason, Julia was able to say the next words: “It’s okay. I forgive you. I love you.”

But it didn’t matter, because her eyes closed again. And Carmen knew they wouldn’t open. Only now would her hands allow her to release their grip. And she did so quickly, backing away, horrified, as Julia’s body slumped over on the table, her fingers barely inches away from the plate of waffles.

Oh my God. What did I do? What have I done? Jules- I just- I just killed Jules. Her breath came faster and faster, until the only thing she could hear were the intermittent rhythms of her sobs and her heartbeat. She shut her eyes tightly and hugged her knees to her chest just like she had when she was a baby, barely a toddler and sobbing in her burning house, waiting for someone to rescue her. Only this time, there was no Shadowsan. There was no one. She had no one, and it was all her fault. She didn’t need to close her eyes this time for darkness to fall over her; it rose up and consumed her all the same.

And then she jolted up with a gasp, sweat and tears mixing on her face as her chest heaved, searching for air and answers for why this kept happening to her. 

A gentle knock sounded on her door.

“Come in,” she whispered hoarsely, barely daring to hope, and the door opened to reveal her mother. Of course. Carmen tried not to let her disappointment show. Of course it’s not Jules, she reasoned harshly. You left. You left her. 

“Oh good, you’re awake,” her mother interrupted her spiral with a smile she had only ever seen in the mirror. “Come out when you’re ready. I made waffles.”
