my thoughts on the animorphs charactersā endings:
theyāre all taking their coping mechanisms from during the war, and dialing them up to 11
tobias just leaves. heās alone and no one cares about him, no one has ever cared about him so itās better to just fly away, disconnect, no attachments to anyone. better to be a hawk, a solitary predator, than a human with feelings
cassie throws herself into solving problems, making the world a better place. and it probably is genuinely meaningful and important to her, but i wonder if she feels like she has to atone for the harm sheās done
marco wears masks and plays the character heās created for himself. better to crack jokes than show youāre terrified, better to act a part than show genuine emotion. heās always claimed he wants money and fame and hot girls, and now he has everything he claimed he wanted, so heās happy, right? never mind that none of it is genuine, none of it is real, donāt look behind the curtain
ax goes back to the role heās always used to define himself - heās an andalite, a warrior in the military, and he fits himself back into that structure. letās just forget how many times he disobeyed orders or chose humans over his own people, heās a loyal andalite warrior
jake during the war was constantly worrying about his role as a leader and the choices he was making, but he coped by hiding all that fear under the mask of a calm, competent leader. but when the mask finally breaks, he has nothing left. he canāt move on and he canāt hide anything, heās stuck constantly reliving his mistakes
