i think this guy is a much more interesting villain than we give him credit for.

we are explicitly told by Seam that the darkners used to worship lightners as their gods.

Ralsei takes this to an extreme, believing that the only way that a darkner can truly have a meaningful life is to be used by lightners however they see fit.

if we look at the relationship between lightners and darkers from the perspective of darkners, it becomes clear that their theology, and by extension their self image, revolves solely around lightners. when the classroom stopped being used, to the lightners it was as simple as just not playing with the toys there anymore. but to the darkners, this was basically god abandoning them. the significance of this event cannot be understated.

obviously, the difference between King and most of the other darkners is his unusually vengeful reaction. what a lot of people seem to miss about him is the adherence of his character to the game’s theme of escaping fate. see, he’s decided that he’s done with the old way of life. not only is he done putting the needs of the lightners before everything else, he wants to completely flip the script on them. but, in a grimly ironic way, his desire to get even is actually just a different flavor of obsession. instead of letting go of the lightners and putting his and his people’s needs as his first priority, he has replaced his obsession with serving lightners with an equally corrosive obsession with destroying the lightners. he terrorizes everyone around him, forces his normally peaceful people to fight against the lightners when they really don’t want to, and barely even acknowledges his own son’s existence because he’s so consumed with his goal of subverting the lightners’ control over him that literally nothing else matters. but that control he’s running from only grows stronger, because despite claiming that he doesn’t need the lightners anymore, he’s still living his entire life around a goal relating DIRECTLY to them. and this goal is actively ruining not only King’s life but also the lives of all the darkners who have to deal with his obsessive militarism. in his desperate efforts to redefine his fate and the fate of other darkners, he has only allowed lightners to have an even bigger and more negative impact on him and his people, essentially circling back to where everything started: darkners defining their entire existence around lightners. whether it’s out of love or out of hate, it seems that darkners are deeply unsure of their own identities, and are unable to define themselves as people outside of their relationship with lightners.
