Fundraising for a group of 35 queer refugees in a refugee camp in East Africa:
Gorom Refugee Settlement Camp is a refugee camp located about 26 km from the center of Juba, the capital of South Sudan. This camp is home to about 500 lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, and heterosexual refugees. The group of LGBTQ refugees within this camp faces numerous challenges and hardships owing to their sexual orientations and gender orientations. They face discrimination, death, threats, and lack of basic human needs. They are unable to fend for themselves due to the homophobia and insecurity within the community they live in. Almost all of these LGBTQ refugees were disowned and ostracized by their families and friends back in their home countries; they can't get any financial support from their relatives back in their home countries. This situation has made them destitute with no one to turn to for financial support and no safe space to work and earn a living. Jamila, a transgender refugee from this camp reached out to me to help set up a fundraiser for them to get financial aid for buying basic human needs.
