I know that this was one of the most confusing parts of Greek for me, so here’s a little guide for some of the most common irregular stem changes for the subjunctive in Modern Greek! Everything is given in the form indicative 1st person present –> subjunctive 1st person present –> definition of the word in English. I hope you guys enjoy, and tell me if you see any mistakes!

We have two verbs to say knowing, and they’re both extremely used but for two different situations.

SAVOIR = Knowing how to do something, or being aware of something

Je sais lire = I know how to read

Mais je sais = But I know

CONNAÎTRE = Knowing when you’re familiar to something. You should be able to substitute “connaître” with “i’m familiar with”

Je connais ce film = I know (I’m familiar) with this movie

*these are action verbs, which means they are conjugated a bit differently :)

Subjunctive is a mood typically used to express wishes, desires, emotions, opinions, doubts, and necessities.

To form the present subjunctive, take the present indicative 3rd person plural form (ils/elles) of most verbs, remove the ending -ent, and add the following endings:

-e -es -e -ions -iez -ent

Verbs which take on irregular formations include avoir, être, faire, aller, savoir, pouvoir, and vouloir

The present subjunctive is used with expressions which could fall into 5 general categories:

1. NECESSITY

il faut que // it is necessary to

il est important que // it is important that

il est nécessaire que // it is essential that

il est temps que // it is time that

il est urgent que // it is urgent that

il est exigé que // it is required that

ex: Il est essentiel que je finisse mes devoirs. // It is essential that I finish my homework.

2. DESIRE

aimer (mieux) que // to prefer that

défendre que // to forbid that

demander que // to ask that

exiger que // to demand/require that

ordonner que // to order that

permettre que // to permit that

préférer que // to prefer that

souhaiter que // to wish/hope that

vouloir que // to want/wish that

ex: Mes parents défendent que je sorte pendant la semaine. // My parents forbid that I go out during the week.

3. DOUBT

il est douteux que // it is doubtful that

il est (im)possible que // it is (im)possible that

il est improbable que // it is improbable that

il n’est pas certain/sûr que // it is not sure that

il n’est pas clair que // it is not clear that

Greetings, Polyglots! I’m back with another post about how to use movies to learn languages!

I’ve noticed a trend among language learners. Especially among those learning English. Those who spoke English the most natural and fluently have all said that they frequently use movies to learn English. I’m telling you, it’s uncanny! I’ve taught English in three countries and in every country the most standout students have always said that they watched videos and movies for idioms and phrases. The result was almost always natural and fluent sounding English. So I began to wonder do movies work to help you learn a language and how do you watch a movie to learn a language anyway!? Movies are like an hour to two hours long! I don’t have the patience for that.

Movies can, however, help you learn languages in a more natural and casual way. Depending on the genre of the movie, you can learn some interesting vocabulary as well. Movies and television shows are very important for language learning, because they not only teach proper use of grammar and vocabulary, they also introduce you to the humor and culture of the people who’s language you’re studying. After only one or two weeks using movies learning Chinese, my casual Chinese has certainly improved and I have learned a few funny phrases to keep things light too. So how do you use movies to learn languages? Here’s how:
