Charlotte looked at her and stood up. She walked over to the other side of her desk before leaning on it. When she said that she had been taken advantage of by Kathleen. Charlotte had no response, she was completely taken back. She was not expecting that at all. She paused for a minute to gather her thoughts. “I’m sorry that happened to you. I don’t agree with what she did to you. As for her working here I will have a talk with her and see what we can come to an agreement on.” 

“ i don’t want her to get fired or whatever, but she needs to learn that she can’t do that to a person. ” leah shrugged a little. “ i’m not gonna say i didn’t want it to happen but she knew i had issues and she still didn’t stop it from happening. ” leah’s voice was rid of anger now and it just showed pain, as much as she tried to cover it up.

Charlotte had been working on catching up on some paperwork. She didn’t work the last two days so she was a bit behind. When she heard Murphy come into her office she stopped and looked up. “Hello, Dr. Murphy.” She sat back. “Okay, sit down and tell me what happened.” 

“ i’ll stand, thanks. ” leah’s armed were folded over her chest defensively. “ kathleen shepherd happened. she took advantage of me. ” not strictly true but leah was too far gone to see how close she was to ruining kathleen’s career. “ we were drunk and i told her that i’d had relations with an older woman in the past that had ended badly. we kissed a couple of times and it almost went further but i stopped it and then she told me that she was just using me. i don’t think someone like that should be working around vulnerable people. ”

Nathan shook his head instinctively, letting a small scoff escape from his lips. “I wouldn’t say I love myself, but I’m pretty pleased with who I am.” He said, his arms folding across his chest as he listened to her. “I - ouch. Harsh words indeed from an intern. A little confidence and self-assurance couldn’t hurt anybody, right?”

“ your whole demeanor tells me otherwise, but i never said it was a bad thing. it’s charming, in a way. ” leah shrugged and gave a small laugh. “ you won’t get anywhere in a place like this with no confidence, you have to be able to stand up for yourself. ”

leah wasn’t one to complain about things, in fact she was quite complacent most of the time, she was also not the type to screw someone over, especially someone she liked but now she was angry and she was hurt and she wanted to lash out. she headed up to charlotte king’s office like a woman on a mission and without knocking she walked straight in. “ i need to complain about an attending. ”

“tiny little humans - “ her voice was soft, eyes watching as she walked by the nicu. arizona had a moment in her schedule which meant she needed sofia time. with her daughter so close, the pediatric surgeon needed as much time with her as possible. even though the trio co-parented as well as they could, arizona couldn’t pass up the time to spend a little extra time. but when she turned the corner, blue eyes widenned at the sight of a familiar face. “hey! i was just going up to the daycare. did you need anything from me or are you just saying hi?” 

“ i just need you to sign the release papers for these two patients, i promise i won’t keep you for long, i don’t want to keep you away from your baby. i can walk up there with you if you like so you don’t get stuck down here. ” she smiled as she handed over the papers for arizona to sign. “ how is she doing? ”

Smiling inwardly, she was glad about it too. “As a matter of fact, I did. Doing a kidney transplant in the first day totally classifies as a good day. But there’s always ways to make it even better.” She adds as she crosses her leg, slightly leaning against the counter to look at the blonde better. “What about you? Any cool surgeries, something sparking your interest? Every resident has a preference.”

“ i like to get my hands dirty, anything really bloody and i’m all over it, but no it seems as though my day was comparatively boring. ” she let her smile falter slightly to give her cheeks a break. “ how could your day have been better? or how could it get better from now? ”

“Are you serious Murphy?” Lexie asked.  “Which patient?” she asked a moment later as she put the chart in her hands down and grabbed her coffee.  “He must have been insistent if you couldn’t manage it,” Lexie mumbled as she fell into step beside the resident. 

“ it’s mr. robinson-young, looks like he’s got a broken wrist and ankle that have been casted but he won’t tell us what’s up this time. ” it hadn’t been for lack of trying on leah’s part, she’d spent a long time with the patient trying to establish why he was in the er but he wasn’t interested in talking to anyone but dr. grey.

Kathleen inhaled deeply, trying to come to terms with the fact that there was clearly nothing that she could say that would make this situation better. Leah was hurt, and rightfully so, because of something she had done. It wasn’t as though she owed her any forgiveness. “Well Doctor Murphy, I hope that we can keep things civil between us. For the sake of professionalism,” She said as she ducked her head down, hoping to avoid any anger or upset that she might see if the resident decided to look her way. But the shame didn’t stop her from adding, “If you ever do want to talk, my doors still open. No appointment needed.” 

leah suddenly felt guilty as she spoke, she was being cruel and for what? because she was a little bit miffed that kathleen hadn’t wanted to sleep with her but had slept with someone else, what seemed to be days later. her and kathleen weren’t a thing and would never be a thing so she all of a sudden felt as though she didn’t have a right to be upset about this, but the damage had been well and truly done now, she couldn’t take any of her words back. “ i’ll — um — i’ll see you around. ” with that and tears rolling down her cheeks, she turned away and walked towards the elevators. she turned around briefly just to check that kathleen was okay and to check that there hadn’t been enough people around them to start the rumours.

“Leah!” Kathleen exclaimed a little too loudly, her eyes quickly scanning to make sure that she hadn’t drawn too much attention to them. Not just for her sake, did the resident really want people talking about this? She didn’t even want to know what Charlotte would say if the younger woman brought any of this up to her - although if her brother was any proof ‘taking advantage’ of willing residents wasn’t exactly frowned upon. “I understand that you’re upset, and that my life being a mess does not excuse any hurt that you are feeling. I shouldn’t have done what I did, I should have done what I knew was right and not sought you out.” She wasn’t sure what else there was to do, and that’s exactly what she told the other woman, “I don’t know what more I can say other that I’m sorry.”

“ it’s doctor murphy to you. ” she responded with a tone in her voice that she didn’t even really recognise herself. “ apology not accepted, as much as i would love to help you clear your conscience it’s not happening. you should feel guilty and you should feel bad about it. i honestly thought you were different but you’re really just the same as every other attending, arrogant and selfish.” she began to realise what she was feeling, she was jealous. she was jealous that kathleen had found someone that she was comfortable sleeping with when she hadn’t been comfortable to sleep with her. she was jealous that kathleen counted someone else as her friend and not her. she was completely and utterly jealous.

Taking off her black leather jacket, she chuckles when Leah lies about the five minutes. “Oh, is it now? I was a bit afraid you would have moved on. I imagine the line is quite long.” Olivia teases with a smirk, taking a sip of the drink when it arrives.

“ there is no line and i’m kind of glad about that too. ” she sighed a little as she drank some more drink. she let the smile return to her face as she looked at the brunette “ did you have a good day? ”

Kathleen sighed, immediately regretting what she’d said as soon as she realised what it had actually meant. “Leah,” She started, grabbing the younger woman’s wrist before she could leave, she really needed to stop being the reason she walked away. “I didn’t mean to imply that we aren’t friends…it’s just that I wasn’t sure that we were,” She admitted, letting go of her wrist and hoping she’d caught her attention enough to stay as she provided an explanation, “If we’re friends then I haven’t been a very good one. You’re right, I used you to try and find some satisfaction, and that was wrong of me - not only as somebody that you trusted with your previous relationship but as your superior. I knew better and I didn’t stop it when I should have. I didn’t stop it at all, I left that responsibility to you and I shouldn’t have.” She couldn’t quite believe that she was apologising, to a resident that she had claimed she wouldn’t even have a drink with, but she couldn’t deny that she had been in the wrong. “You’re right, it was fucked up and I’m sorry. It shouldn’t have happened.”

“ if we weren’t friends i wouldn’t have bothered to tell you that people are talking about you and your clearly very active sex life. ” a new coldness had found it’s way to leah as she spoke now. “ but as for being friends now, after you’ve admitted to quite literally using me, no, we’re not friends. ” she folded her arms across her chest defensively as she looked at kathleen. “ maybe i’ll go to the chief and explain how you, my superior, took advantage of me, used me and led me to believe that you gave a shit. ” an empty threat that leah knew for a fact she wouldn’t follow through on, she liked kathleen too much to get her into any kind of trouble.

Kathleen would have liked to point out that the resident had no idea how kinky her sister could be, she’d just scratched the surface and it wasn’t like she wanted to go any deeper. Sexting your cheating ex during a blackout was surely some level of messed up to people other than Kathleen. But wisely she choose not to continue with her weak lie. “You know what Leah you’re right, my life is falling apart which means it’s a little complicated,” She hissed, the younger woman had hit the nail on the head, “My husband screwed my little sister after telling me he had no feelings for her and kissing her was a stupid mistake, so now to try to feel less miserable I am letting residents finger me and having sex with my only friend here. So if you have a way to make any of that feel less complicated, please feel free to share it with the class.”

leah felt a little bad as kathleen spoke but that didn’t stop her from putting up a finger and shooting a look at kathleen. “ only one friend, huh? i’m just a resident to you aren’t i? i’m just someone that you decided you’d have a little fun with to take your mind off how screwed up you really are, despite the fact that you knew that i’d been in positions like this before. that’s fucked up, dr shepherd. ” she wasn’t about to be on first name basis with someone who didn’t see her as anything more than just a resident. “ i’m done with you and your complicated life. screw you. ”

“That wasn’t what I meant,” Kathleen was quick to argue, and it really hadn’t been. It wasn’t as though she was trying to imply anything had happened between her sisters and anybody other than their husbands…although maybe that implication would come from what exactly those residents had overheard. “It could have been Nancy and John…they’re kinky you know. They might have been roleplaying or something.” Even she was aware that it wasn’t a convincing deflection of blame, the was a snowball’s chance in hell of Leah believing it. She sighed, figuring that continuing the lie would only cause her more trouble in the end. “Look I’m not lying to you. I mean, I wasn’t lying because it was you,” She admitted, rubbing her lips together as she thought of a way to explain, “It’s just very complicated.”

“ i’m not so sure your sister would be screaming cormac hayes’ name while screwing her husband, that’s a little bit too kinky if you ask me...but whatever, you carry on lying. ” leah rolled her eyes as kathleen spoke, “ it’s always complicated with you, nothing is ever easy or simple as much as you want it to be. we were complicated, your marriage was complicated, whatever is going on now is complicated. i think you want things to be complicated because then you have an excuse for being miserable. ”

Kathleen knew exactly what Leah was referring to, it wasn’t as though it was hard to guess, but she didn’t exactly want to talk about it. In the name of discretion, but she couldn’t help but think about their own previous encounter that made this conversation even more awkward than it would have been with any other resident who dared to approach. “I have no idea what they’re talking about,” She denied confidently, chin tilted in the air slightly with pride, “Maybe they confused me with one of my sisters? Nancy perhaps.”

“ i really don’t care, kathleen. you don’t need to lie to me, i’m not gonna go all crazy on you. we’re friends, that’s all we ever have been and that’s all we ever will be. ” she shrugged her shoulders a little. “ if someone hears you say it could’ve been one of your two married sisters then don’t you think that’s going to screw things up for them, you could quite possibly ruin a marriage,  something i’m sure you know plenty about, because you don’t want to be truthful... ”
