Abstract: Palynology, the scientific field concerned with the study of pollen grains and other spores, was established during the 19th century and continues to have important applications today. Through the analysis of microfossil remains, pollen counts can be used to identify environmental conditions dating back thousands of years. As a result, palynology is a key tool of climate scientists, archaeologists, and ecologists – to name a few. Pollen identification relies on three main features: the size and shape of grains, the number and physical characteristics of pores, and the texture of the grain surface. The goal of this project was to produce to-scale, digitally constructed replicas of pollen grains in a format capable of reproduction through 3D printing. By analyzing and modeling structures as they would be viewed under a light microscope, the intention was to create final material products that will assist researchers in identifying and understanding the differences between pollen types common to the New York area. By keeping a record of our process, we hope that others will continue this project in the future.

So I know I’ve been sorta AWOL this semester, but a preview of my thesis work is currently up in Fordham Lincoln Center’s Lipani Gallery! The senior seminar show is called “Time is Up!” and features work by 11 other talented artists, so if you’re in the area, drop by and see it in person! I’m planning on posting closer shots of some of my individual drawings, as well as a statement on my work over the next few weeks. Keep an eye out! ;)
