MAKING NEW MEDIA MAKE SENSE: In this chapter it discusses how new media messages are displayed and the influence they have. New media allows communication with many types of people that can cause different interpretations. Technological determinism and social construction are a few of the ideas that support the message in the chapter.
Technological determinism is the idea that technology has the ability to shape society. New media has made it easier for communication among people, a main principle of the theory. New media has allowed communication to be done on different mediums. Social media gives people the ability to communicate instantly and with people across the world. Another main idea of this theory is that technology is progressing society, but it can be stopped or limited. There is no way to stop how people use this technology. It is important to note that in this theory that people are not necessarily the ones that decide the impact technology has. The evolution of technology helps shape society. The next theory is one that believes people believe are the ones that shape technology.
Social construction of technology argues that technology doesn’t decide what people do. Humans decide what they do with technology. The different types of technology have different ways that they can be used. It is important to have context when discussing a certain type of technology. In the terms of new media, it is difficult to control what others are discussing or doing with technology. On social media, people have differing opinions and have the ability to express their ideas with people all over the world. The ideas they post are stuck out there once they decide to post.
Both theories have strong explanations of how new media affects society. One believes it is up to technology to influence the audience, while the other believes that humans decide how new media works. It is clear that new media either way has influenced how humans interact.
