I can't believe there aren't already dozens of retrospectives about the live musical TV special boom of the late 2010s bc those things felt like the kind of weird, ancient curio that gets the video essay treatment from the day they dropped. So many of them were debacles (Rent! Live becoming Rent! Prerecorded bc an actor broke his leg and they didn't bother to hire understudies; A Christmas Story: Live! hiding that it was a musical bc the musical of A Christmas Story sucks)! The only one that was actually good was also a bomb that helped kill the trend entirely but secured /three/ EGOTs. NBC kept announcing new ones (Bye Bye Birdie: Live! Hair: Live!) and somehow ended up making...a Grinch one?
