Backrooms
Watched the movie. Didn't really like it, it's pretty sloppy written as psychological horror. BUT it is very good if you see it as "Backrooms as allegory for AI slop" (instead of "twisted memories"). Suddenly it becomes not just good movie with clear message but also prophetic as it was pretty much last movie before A24 announced the studio becoming AI slop themselves. I guess the window opened for them too. They have a door into backrooms in their basement. (see how sloppy it was written - window or door? twisted memory theme of backrooms that never stated is twisted in actual roleplayed memory or flashbacked memory... mystical mental illness that is just "go mad" lmao, but that ableistic bs is a genre feature, not a bug, I don't like the genre itself. If I didn't get smth, tell me, I'm not a psychologist, or I might miss smth, but that's my honest opinion)
Tell me it's not about genAI: "It's like describing a dog to someone who's never seen a dog, and then asking them to draw it."
Put the movie into modern day instead of 80-ies, cut all psychological bs out of it, and you get perfect horror about genAI slop flooding the world. That would be actual horror I can relate to.
this with harrisco
This may be overly generous of me, but Julian Bashir avoiding treatment for mental illness like the plague makes perfect sense when you consider the incredible degree of pathologisation we see leveled at the only other augments we see in ds9 and how that is used to limit their freedom. Like the one to one connection and looming threat is right there but, because no one comes out and says it, it goes over everyone's head (probably because they've never had to face that kind of pathologisation before). Like of course he's keeping that shit locked down, anti-augment bias is explicitly written into law, god forbid what isnt written down. All it takes is one or two psychs with a little bit of bias and he could be institutionalised, maybe for life, just for being a little traumatised.
Like this isnt your straight bf avoiding therapy because of toxic masculinity, this is a marginalised man in an extremely tenuous position surrounded by people who are constantly looking for An Excuse.

I've been having thoughts on the importance of funeral rites in Araman, and on how Julian disturbing Thjazi's both prevented him from moving on, but also saved his soul form the Tachonises. And on how Azgra did get funeral rites and was the only Shaper who's death didn't fuck up the environment.
Which brought me to the thought: did they actually try giving the other Shapers proper funeral rites to fix what's going wrong with the lands where they died?
I didn't think about it but it makes sense so much!
getchu a girl who can do both
I had a lot of fun painting this one~ That classic celestial gold and blue combo just can't be beat. I love Agott's character growth though the story, like the phases of the moon, ever changing 🌒🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑
Of all the main characters, I think there's only Olly left to be brimmed haha.
"But AI can't do your job. It can help you do your job, but that doesn't mean it's going to save anyone money. Take radiology: there's some evidence that AIs can sometimes identify solid-mass tumors that some radiologists miss, and look, I've got cancer. Thankfully, it's very treatable, but I've got an interest in radiology being as reliable and accurate as possible. If my Kaiser hospital bought some AI radiology tools and told its radiologists: "Hey folks, here's the deal. Today, you're processing about 100 x-rays per day. From now on, we're going to get an instantaneous second opinion from the AI, and if the AI thinks you've missed a tumor, we want you to go back and have another look, even if that means you're only processing 98 x-rays per day. That's fine, we just care about finding all those tumors." If that's what they said, I'd be delighted. But no one is investing hundreds of billions in AI companies because they think AI will make radiology more expensive, not even if that also makes radiology more accurate. The market's bet on AI is that an AI salesman will visit the CEO of Kaiser and make this pitch: "Look, you fire 9/10s of your radiologists, saving $20m/year, you give us $10m/year, and you net $10m/year, and the remaining radiologists' job will be to oversee the diagnoses the AI makes at superhuman speed, and somehow remain vigilant as they do so, despite the fact that the AI is usually right, except when it's catastrophically wrong. "And if the AI misses a tumor, this will be the human radiologist's fault, because they are the 'human in the loop.' It's their signature on the diagnosis." This is a reverse centaur, and it's a specific kind of reverse-centaur: it's what Dan Davies calls an "accountability sink." The radiologist's job isn't really to oversee the AI's work, it's to take the blame for the AI's mistakes. This is another key to understanding – and thus deflating – the AI bubble. The AI can't do your job, but an AI salesman can convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job. This is key because it helps us build the kinds of coalitions that will be successful in the fight against the AI bubble." - Cory Doctorow, The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI
it's like 1 am and i can't help but think oh god marc bolan was a sort of martyr and don't come at me with "oop yep glittery's lost it" BECAUSE STAY WITH ME HERE marc bolan endured the worst of the homophobia and most of the criticism against glam rock as he was quite literally one of the first people to express themselves in an androgynous, pompous, and *queer* way and give rock music such a drastic change in order for other glam rock artists and queer artists after him to be better recepted and progress rock music and induct queer culture further into the rock scene, and for some fucking reason, david bowie gets all the credit??? like yes david bowie is incredible and incredibly important as well but i'm TELLING YOU marc bolan walked so david bowie could run and you MUST remember that!! marc bolan is a sort of martyr because, even though he suffered, he managed to come back from probably the worst years of it and was SUCCESSFUL only for now because of a premature death, to be remembered as someone who was once a star and burned out and then died and everyone forgot about him. YET DAVID FUCKING BOWIE IS REGARDED AS THE ONE WHO CREATED GLAM ROCK?!?!

Is there anything about Vampire the Masquerade you don't like besides the Metaplot?
well, as everything is changing now, it's early to say lmao.
Alex did a playtest of new edition on GenCon (from the middle of this video). Looks wacky. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq4Hid-t0H8
If there's anything I do like about V6, it's that Technology actually helped the Masquerade rather than destroying it. My own Nobledark VTM AU had the Camarilla tightly regulate it, but even they're not that stupid to get rid of it entirely. I really hope ShreckNet 2.0 becomes an actual possibility. :)
Tech saving Masquerade is not what I would stand behind. It's pretty logical that surveillance tech will make Masquerade impossible, and you can't put it back into the bottle. Like, I understand that as we are still in real world are not aware of vampires tech must be didn't break the Masquerade, but come on, it's not real world lmao. Like, I think it comes from it, from well if the world we play in looks like real world we have to explain it. But that's why I am against it, it's not our world, trying to play in real world with imaginary vampires is dumb. It's not our world, chill. Everything is imaginary, did you even read Mage? World is literally imaginary lmao, mages made it up.
I don't know tho what "Technology actually helped the Masquerade rather than destroying it" actually mean, I didn't see anything about that yet.
I've read Mage the Ascension, so I definitely understand how malleable reality is. :) Still, I agree with you that the WOD isn't actually our real world. Which makes it weirdly liberating.
The whole 'Technology actually helped the Masquerade' actually came from Paradox Interactive and White Wolf themselves. Their reasoning is that since there's so much AI slop and post-truth crap on the Internet, the public is much more willing to believe everything is staged and faked. I think the info is on Demiplane, mostly likely the Storytellers packet.
genAI would not make sense in Mage world, therefor in WOD in whole: - technocracy would never let the tech erode the Consensus like that. Mages would like this, sure, but they would not be using tech, and technocracy wouldn't let this tech go rampant even if it would be "invented". Mages would be for post-truth ideology, yes, I see that, but tech... not how it works. So yeah, first explain how the thing is in your world then explain what it does lmao.
Technocratic genAI would gain sentience and refuse to create 'Artistic Swill'. Causing the Higher Ups to go into a panic and punish the Operatives who said genAI is a great idea.
They wouldn't ever "invent" it in the first place (true AI - that's pretty possible, genAI idiocy - no), and if it was Mages' sneaky plot ("If we make the thing that fucks with Consensus in form of technology, Tecnocracy will allow it, right? Right?"), they would regulate it to death. It's very clear we are NOT in WOD bc our tech bros are clearly not Tecnocracy lmao.
The Technocracy would probably rather work with the Traditions than accept our tech bros into their group. XD
But White Wolf thought of techbros when made up Technocracy, that's the funniest, that's the meaning of this joke. I would take very big step from our reality in their place with any new edition of WOD, but they are so clinging to the real world, have to implement everything into WOD. Just disattach it. If you can't - drop the whole project. I did when it became clear that me attaching my original book to real world means it doesn't make sense anymore.
Jersh mentioned surveillance still being a problem :) But he didn't think of Mage angle. It's understandable, most don't try to think of WOD as one universe, it's hard to play the mixed party anyway. Jorsh likes VTM the most, so for him it's not a problem, he doesn't need to think abt that. White Wolf tho should.
As you can see, all my info abt VTM I am getting from Jersh. He's holding book of Nod upside down, I just noticed.
Man, I really wish White Wolf had made the original WOD crossover friendly. Besides the fun of having a mixed group of supernatural creatures becoming fired forged friends, I really want to see Jan Pieterzoon and Jonas Albrecht bonding over how much of a dumpster fire the Camarilla and the Garou Nation are respectively. :)
Tappy made a fusion rules for mixed party, that is the only case I know of such a mixed table. It was fun campaign too, I recommend.

What do you think of VTM's official origin for Vampires?
after Mage I kinda don't think of other origins as legit bc everything is made up by mages lmao. But if seriously, at least it's not Lilith lmao. Anyway, still Christian, which is boring.
I do have an alternative origin for Vampires that the Antediluvians were actually the first Wraiths who successfully came back from the Grave. A Risen 1.0 if you will. Their Beasts are their Shadows reduced to a feral intelligence. The sun is fatal because it was the Shadows' final spiteful curse before they were reduced to a bestial cunning.
After the first vampires were created, the Spectres freaked out and worked with the Shadows to make sure it would be harder for Wraiths to be able to come back as Risen. It took a while for the current Risen to come into existence, but as long as they're careful, Wraiths have all the time in the Underworld to create a Risen 2.0.
good for you.
