“Do you know why I pulled you over?” is a trap. It means there’s a good chance the officer doesn’t actually have a good reason to ticket you, and is trying to get you to waive your 5th Amendment rights and incriminate yourself. If you make a guess, that’s a confession of guilt.

My bullshit ticket court date was nearly THREE YEARS later for the hearing to simply PLEAD, that wasn’t even the actual court date (and the charging officer isn’t required at the plea), they didn’t not even HAVE the actual court date scheduled.

I ended up declaring no contest online a little over two years after I got the “ticket” (I’d moved 35 miles away at that point, hello fucking twenty-four months had passed) because I had actually been wanting to take a defensive driving course online for my own edification (true story yep) and found one that was accepted by that city traffic court as their alternative to the fine.
