St. Perpetua and Felicity illustration is finished!
Perpetua and Felicity are 3rd-century North African paired saints who were executed together for their Christian faith. Some consider them lesbian saints or patrons of same-sex couples. The history professor John Boswell named Perpetua and Felicity as one of the three primary pairs of same-sex saints in the early church in his book "Same Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe". When Perpetua's father found out she was a Christian, he was then on making sure that Perpetua was arrested. There she was allowed to still take care of her newborn baby and meet Felicity who was pregnant. The reason why they weren't immediately executed was due to Felicity being still pregnant, and during Roman times it wasn't allowed to execute pregnant women. During their time in prison Perpetua had alot of dreams. One that she transfroms into a man and another where se sees the ladder to heaven and on this ladder there is a snake, looking up to the heavens but then looking at Perpetua. Perpetua interpert this as her and Felicity's death will be painful but they will go to heaven after it. Once Felicity gave birth they were sent to a public arena in Carthage. In their last moment, Perpetua kissed Felicity before them being put to death by trampling by a cattle.
In Irish mythology, Banba is a matron goddess of Irelandâs sovereignty and protection, embodying the spirit of the land. She was part of a powerful trio of matron goddesses alongside her sisters, Ăriu and FĂłdla.
Ăine, on the other hand, was a fairy goddess of love, fertility, (and like many deities) had overlapping roles as a moon and sun goddess. Her name, meaning âbright,â reflected these aspects, and her sacred animals were the red mare and the swan.
The funny thing? Their romantic relationship isnât really rooted in myth itself. Instead, this pairing stems from Irish poetry. Banba is often used poetically to symbolize Ireland, with poets declaring their love for âherâ (the land). Then thereâs Flann Mainistrechâs (1050s) poem, which claims Ăine âdied of love for Banba.â While this likely portrays Banba as Ireland personified rather than a literal lover, well⌠I prefer the latter interpretation, donât you? I really like the idea that every single love poem to Banba is actually Ăine writing them.

And lastly, Iphis and Ianthe! A Roman story taking place in Crete where Egyptian gods save the day!
Funnily enough, the story of Iphis and Ianthe is the only mythological account that explicitly depicts female same-sex desire of Graeco-Roman mythology. It's a story that uses words you cannot simply reinterpret as something different nor erase. The story explicitly tells the reader that Iphis and Ianthe loved each other. End of sentence.
So it all started with Iphis' mother Telethusa hiding her daughter's gender from Iphis' father's knowledge. Iphis' father wanted a son and told Telethusa that he would kill his child if it were born a girl, so, like any mother would do, she raised Iphis as a boy. When Iphis was 13, her father (still ignorant of Iphis' true sex) arranged for her to marry Ianthe, daughter of Telestes. During their engagement, they were instructed alongside each other and shared the same teachers, and they fell deeply in love with one another. Ianthe loved Iphis and was looking forward to the day they married. But Iphis loved Ianthe with a broken heart.
Here is Iphis' lament to the goddess Hera, from Ovid's Metamorphoses:
"O what will be the awful dreaded end, with such a monstrous love compelling me? If the Gods should wish to save me, certainly they should have saved me; but, if their desire was for my ruin, still they should have given some natural suffering of humanity. The passion for a cow does not inflame a cow, no mare has ever sought another mare. The ram inflames the ewe, and every doe follows a chosen stag; so also birds are mated, and in all the animal world no female ever feels love passion for another femaleâwhy is it in me?"
The story ends with Telethusa drags Iphis to the goddess Isis' temple and ask the goddess to help her daughter. When Isis hears the mothers call for help she grants their wish to be true and turns Iphis into a man. And then Iphis and Ianthe gets married and lived happily. In my illustration, I depict the front side as when the girls first meet, their arrangement. I decided to use the Hellenic symbol to show their connection to Greece/Crete. On the other side is when Iphis becomes a man with the help of the Egyptian goddess Isis, so the symbol changes to Isisâ instead. The symbol is a bit hard to see, but I imagined that they would have golden hot stamps, so as a keychain they would stand and pop out much more.
Decided to start a drawing of Black Mercy this VERY late last night. Not my greatest, but itâs doable.
Never in my entire life did I think I would see a canon boob-windowed Superman...
I have finally sat down and finished this goddamn piece.
Passion Betrayed animatic is out now!
My goal was to make the whole Burned Grey path into a fully animatic but this is a start! Right now I'll make them in parts. Also, the Burned Grey is probably my fave paths right after Happily Ever After, which is why I picked it to animate ^^
A long, drawn-out sigh........
