Am I the only person who thought this was really fucking funny
A lot of the really funny moments in Lord of the Rings come from Tolkien playing with language like this, where we have relatively formal, archaic, “high” language responded to with informal, modern, “low” language.Â
another hilarious example:
my absolute favorite example of tolkien switching registers in this way is
felt like doing my own softer world style comic, for beau and molly again

achilles: when I die, mingle our ashes together so that we may be together for eternity
historians: f is for friends who do stuff together
We’re seriously escalating the astronomically out-of-touch “academia is hiding all the gay from you*” meme on this forsaken hellsite to “Academics Who Study Ancient Greece Are No-Homoing Achilles?”
reALLY? *REALLY???* That is not remotely a current or mainstream school of thought. I mean, fuck, if you go to JSTOR and search for “Patroclus” your third result is an article called “Achilles and Patroclus in Love” from 1978.
This shit is dangerously anti-intellectual. It’s hard enough for the humanities to retain funding as it is, the last fucking thing we need is an erosion of the perception of its authenticity/necessity coming from the Left as well. And believe you me, that is exactly where this road leads. It’s the exact same playbook that the far right uses but with a different hat.
reblogged for commentary
Also, let’s talk about the Achilles and Patroclus tradition for a moment. So obviously the main source for their story is the Iliad, and to be fair to people who didn’t think that they were in love, the homoerotic aspect of their relationship is never explicitly discussed in the Homeric poems. So if you’ve only read Homer, you could be forgiven for not seeing the homoeroticism. HOWEVER; the ancients themselves looked at Achilles and Patroclus and went “GAAAAAAY”* and proceeded to have heated debates about whether Achilles was a top or a bottom (I shit you not). So when modern scholars look back at the Homeric poems and talk about the love between our two heroes, they aren’t projecting modern sensibilities into ancient literature, they are simply seeing the same things that other ancient authors saw.
*modern conceptualisations of sexuality were not a Thing™️ in the ancient world. The distinction was between active penetrating partner and passive penetrated partner. It didn’t matter if both partners were men (homoerotic relations between women are scantily arrested but that may be simply because few women authors survive) or between a man and a woman. However, it was considered shameful to be the passive partner. So while the Greeks may not have been homophobic, one could definitely say they were bottomphobic.
