During a conversation with my mother, the subject of anemia came up.
Now three things you should know about my mother:
She used to be a nurse
Sheβs a major history buff
Sheβs very big on herbal remedies (when medically appropriate)
Naturally, the conversation turned to a medieval German folk remedy for anemiaβ or, depending, a common witchβs spell for helping people who were suffering weakness while pregnant or during heavy periods.Β
More or less: youβd take several rusty nails and drive them into an apple (they have to be rusty, or else it wonβt work). The next morning, pull out the nails and have the afflicted person eat the apple, and they should be cured.
Neither chemistry nor medicine are my fields of expertise, but my understanding of it is thus (please correct me if Iβm wrong): Several rusty nails means a whole lot of iron oxideβ which is then dissolved in the mild acid of the appleβs juices and stays inside the apple, which makes it easy to ingest. Meanwhile the nails arenβt actually damaged, and can be used again for their intended purpose.Β
Itβs literally an iron supplement, as made by people who have very few resources to work with. Keep in mind that medieval peasants wouldnβt have access to regular meat, but they often had apples and they might be able to borrow a few nails from the local farrier or blacksmith.Β
