oh my god i just realized this because of seeing some of the script for obsession.
nikki never ate once she was wish nikki. aside from a bug apparently? when she vomits on bear, it's said in the script that she mostly is vomiting up stomach acid because she hasn't eaten in a while
like good god that is so unsettling. he doesn't even notice her not eating. he doesn't notice she's not writing. he doesn't notice anything and he just wants to continue the fantasy of being with the woman he's had a crush on for years. he just tells her to stop being weird as if it would undo the fact she cooked his dead cat.
he never truly had feelings for her because if he did he would have genuinely cared that she wasn't herself. instead of continuing to assault her even when he knows it isn't real
So the thing that I think sticks out most to me about obsession (other than the phenomenal acting, sound design, filming and editing of course) is the fact that within the story you can see how it all couldโve been okay. Not the wish, the wish never couldโve been okay, but without the wish. Without Bearโs obsession. The movie makes it so you can see it so clearly. They give you this image in so many waysโthey give him these opportunities before and after the wish to choose the right thing, choose the hard thing. But he never does. For example he chose to buy her the one wish willow instead of the citrine necklace. In the movie theyโre vague about it but do you know what citrine is good for? Inspiring creativity, giving clarity and motivation. That is exactly what Nikki wants, what she says she wants in the car ride over to her house. Itโs what Bear would get her if he actually knew or cared for her instead of the idea of her, if he put more effort in than just the thought. But no, he buys the wish because I donโt think he ever really intended to give it to her because have you ever seen something in a store and really wanted it but youโre there to buy something for a friend so you get it for them and just a small part of you wishes that it wonโt end up with them? That it will stay with you instead? You justify it by thinking โwell Iโm the one who bought it anyway, itโs mine.โ Because really it wasnโt for them, it was for you. His giftโhis love, it wasnโt for her, it was for him.
The second most important scene in Obsession is where Bear tries to throw up the pills before being stopped by Wish!Nikkiโs wish, and the first is
Up until this point, Nikki isnโt aware of Bearโs involvement! She genuinely believed he had no idea something was wrong! If Bear HAD freed her, she wouldโve been grateful because she believes in him!!!! She believes he has no involvement! She thinks sheโs possessed by a demon and has no idea why! She thinks Bear doesnโt KNOW. She thinks heโs being tricked because she trusts in him and she figures heโs not the type of guy who could be okay with this!
When Bear walks away, thatโs the moment that Nikki faces Bear did this. Somehow, some way, heโs behind this. And she just has to live with the consequences

wish Nikki is an example of the "born sexy yesterday" trope done right.
this trope has its roots in deeply misogynistic movies where a female character (who is often not a human, but an alien or robot) displays childlike behavior while also being extremely physically attractive.
this leads to a very questionable "romance" between her and the big strong man who either lies to her, manipulates her or coerces her into doing things she wouldn't do if she were not written to be so innocent.
wish Nikki fits this criteria, but this time it's a critique of rape culture and incels.
wish Nikki is very much like a child in a woman's body โ from her speech patterns, her whiny tantrums and frown down to her defecating and throwing up on herself when Bear wasn't home.
and yet, you can see the drastic shift in the way she dresses. real Nikki was shown to be wearing an oversized jacket and shorts while wish Nikki's clothes get more and more revealing and male-gazey. she is basically the fantasy of every man who wrote and directed those old movies with the the "born sexy yesterday" trope.

oh and another thing that devastates me about Obsession is how much nikki is judged and blamed by those around her. sarah and ian repeatedly telling bear that he shouldnโt have to deal with her, that sheโs not his responsibility, that theyโre worried sheโs taking advantage of him. as if they arenโt also her friends, as if they shouldnโt know her well enough to notice something is off. thereโs no concern for why nikki is behaving the way she is, thereโs just distain towards it. she starts acting out of character and so it must all be intentional. but bear doesnโt get questioned. bear isnโt gossiped about. nikki loses all her agency and autonomy, and all she gets for it is judgment
