One of my favorite things about the httyd books has to be how it instills this sense of wonder into the world. It tells you that there's this magnificent universe just outside your periphery, that if you look close enough, you will see dragons soaring through the sky as stars, scuttling through the grass as brief shadows, sleeping deep beneath the earth where no man has yet to touch. Things that's can't be proven true, but can't be proven untrue either.
The world of httyd dragon is fiction. I mean, dragons aren't real, no one has ever seen one. But then they put in the book that hiccup deliberately made it so that stories untruthfully sang of their non-existence, that no one has ever seen one because they are hiding.. And dragons are wonderful at hiding. That somewhere out there, they are there. That some time long past, there was a king and a hero. Somewhere out there, toothless is still sleeping. Someday, the world may be just as wonderful. There is only one way to reach this world, and it is to make the current one a better place.
It sounds a bit cheesy but isn't that such a wonderful message? That until the world becomes a place where creatures of any kind are no longer oppressed, where greed does not rot the mind, where the weak have a place in, where people lead with kindness just as hiccup did, then it cannot truly be wonderful.
There are no dragons, in this world. Maybe not in your entire lifetime and a dozen lifetimes after yours, but history is a succession of noble failures. Do not be afraid to fail, just as hiccup did, do not be afraid to care. Success may be improbable, but an effort made in the right direction is still a change towards a better world. Even in failure, there is hope. Until then, even if the world isn't wonderful just yet, if you look close enough, perhaps you can still see some of its wonders.

personally my favourite part of how to train your dragon is when hiccup says 'we should do this' and stoick says 'not at all you weedy little barnacle boy' and hiccup says 'oh.' and then leaves to do it anyway with 1-3 sidekicks and then we follow hiccup for a while but then we switch back to stoick who is soon interrupted by snotlout who says 'hiccup has gone off on a sidequest' attempting to get hiccup in trouble but after stoick says 'how dare he' snotlout keeps going to try get hiccup in more trouble and says 'yes he even did this thing' (which will reveal he is actually being quite heroic) so stoick says 'ah then we must help him!' or 'oh he shall die a hero's death because that is a brave suicide mission' and snotlout thinks to himself fuckity. best bit of every book

When I started getting back into httyd and saw all those posts saying they wish there was swearing in rtte or that the riders actually killed people. Naturally I assumed people were being silly or melodramatic, edgy even... But no, the show just would make more sense if they did that actually. There's cut away gags making tongue and cheek references to the gang swearing off screen. And the enemies are cut away from after they were just shot with fire or stabbed brutally. To the point where the lack is actually jarring. I'm so sorry httyd fandom i thought we were being edgelords for the sillies I didn't realize that the show would actually make more sense with overt violence and swearing
httyd lore is so fuckin funny because they’re so shocked every-time they find a civilization or dragon they didn’t know existed outside their archipelago- like they’re continuously baffled just by the fact there is anything outside their corner of the world. but also like they canonically know what a hyena is and have eaten them. like they without question know of and can reach Africa. guys I wanna see what dragons they have out in Africa
While I love the riders very dearly they simply cannot come close to how crazy Book!Fishlegs and Camicazi are about Book!Hiccup. Like Hiccup once told them to throw him into shark-dragon infested waters because he “had a plan” and they just. Listened. Did they know what the plan was? No. They simply believed that it would work because Hiccup came up with it. And that’s barely even scraping the surface. Fishlegs lets himself become a slave to give Hiccup a word of encouragement, and Camicazi willingly stays enslaved even when given a very easy way out because she didn’t wanna leave Hiccup alone. Both sail towards a volcano about to erupt and release hundreds of bloodthirsty dragons because Hiccup thinks he can probably stop it. Like come on. And I that isn’t even mentioning how crazy Hiccup is about them.

love love love how camicazi and fishlegs are so supportive and have such faith in their friend hiccup!! fishlegs as the silent and steady one, always there even when he's terrified and camicazi as, most of the time quite literally, the louder one who directly stands up to people and serves as their push to be more daring and confident. Also love the distinction in their descriptions as the 'two weird ones' and 'the small one' like nope not all three of them are little weirdos, only the two!

Sometimes I think about how the dragons Hiccup freed from traps that year he was on the run were rebellion dragons. They might have killed him the second he released them. But that didn't stop him for a moment, because that's who he is. It struck me on rereading book 10 that he didn't even hesitate to release the Deadly Shadow even though it had just been attacking him.
Over and over, Hiccup triumphs because of his kindness, and that's what I love about him.
