Sat on a fallen tree, dressed like he’s got a mortgage meeting in 1912. A lovely old portrait with proper Sunday-best seriousness, all cap, boots, countryside, and one small moment from another world.
📍Somewhere muddy and respectable
✨ Vibes: childhood before trainers
🎶 Soundtrack: “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic” by John Walter Bratton
Kent, November 1907. Catherine wrote to Miss Bunting asking for her photo and sent this in return. Whatever was happening that day, nobody was going to miss it. Every hat accounted for, Sunday best firmly on.
📍 Kent, November 1907
✨ A hundred hats, not a hair out of place
🎵 Land of Hope and Glory by Sir Edward Elgar
A 1922 football team postcard, sent with “With Most Sincere Wishes From Joe” on the back. On the front, two sailors sit at either end like little naval bookends, while the chap in the flat cap appears to be giving the left-hand sailor absolute evils, possibly for letting in a goal, losing the ball, or simply existing. The team themselves look like they’ve been told to look happy, despite it being 29 November and everyone probably freezing their socks off.
📍 Unknown football pitch, 29 November 1922
✨ Sailor bookends, flat cap judgement, forced cheer, and sincere wishes from Joe
🎶 Match of the Day theme, played from a gramophone at the side of the pitch
