In Broome-Norton’s exceptional art-deco relief 'Abundance', the sexually assertive male and female bodies proclaim their child as a heroic product of their union. The work is an emblem of the fruitfulness of the land and the human race. The athleticism and fecundity of the bodies is coupled with a sense of the fertility of the land, signified by sheaves of wheat and a wreath. Such optimistic and mythic imaging gives no indication that the sculpture was conceived during the social upheaval of the Great Depression. The work instead reinforces notions of Australian life as a golden age of physical and environmental harmony.

A fascinating set of 3 historical photographs , original silver prints taken Jan 1940 as seen on the back , capturing a legendary moment in Gulf Coast history: the January 1940 arctic freeze in New Orleans, Louisiana.
These striking images depict the newly installed, masterpiece Art Deco fountain, Fountain of the Four Winds, located at the historic New Orleans Lakefront (Shushan) Airport, completely encased in thick, dramatic ice.
🏛️ THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND & THE WPA CONTROVERSY
The Fountain of the Four Winds was sculpted by renowned Mexican-American artist Enrique Alferez as a major Works Progress Administration (WPA) public arts project during the Great Depression. The fountain features four towering nude figures representing the cardinal winds.
The piece is famous for a near-violent clash between modern public art and 1930s puritanical norms. A local WPA official was so outraged by the public nudity specifically the male "North Wind" figure that he threatened to take a sledgehammer to the sculpture to smash off its genitalia. Alferrez famously refused to back down, claiming he would guard the site overnight with a rifle. The standoff escalated until regional WPA writers bypassed local authorities and appealed directly to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The White House formally endorsed the artwork, forcing the disgruntled WPA official to back down and saving this masterpiece from destruction.
❄️ THE UNPRECEDENTED 1940 DEEP FREEZE
Just shortly after this fierce WPA battle, nature put on its own spectacular show. In January 1940, a historic, brutal arctic air mass swept through the Deep South, plunging New Orleans down to a bitter 19 F. The subtropical city was paralyzed, ice chunks floated down the Mississippi River, and the cascading water of Alferez controversial WPA fountain froze completely solid. These three photographs capture that breathtaking, ironic visual contrast: the scandalous public nudes beautifully draped in massive sheets of winter ice and towering icicles.
