A realization I had was that we have absolutely no idea what Gaster's association to the Gaster Followers even is.

A lot of people see it as some sort of "master" type thing, given the cult-y vibes and such, and that's a completely fair assessment of what's going on.

But it's also entirely reasonable to believe that Gaster is not a leader, but an object of praise. The man himself might not be telling them to say and do things, and rather they are just spreading word on their own accord and doing things because of their belief in him.

A revered figure, rather than an evil mastermind.
