As soon as his arms released her from his grasp and his hands moved to her shoulders, she shook at them once as an act of defiance even if she knew it wouldn't loosen his grip. He treated her like she couldn't take care of herself, as if she was a child lost and wandering out in the open. Mila couldn't bring herself to look directly at his gaze, because she knew if she did, she'd see their son in those eyes. "It's the end of the world, Kaide. God forbid I find some peace or joy with it, even if I have to sacrifice it all just to feel normal again for a split second."
She didn't want to mean what she said, but deep inside she did. Ever since the loss of Shane, there was nothing that could make the sun shine again for her. "No one is out there asking you to do those things, you want be off on your own outside of a community. You have to be a hero, a big macho dangerous guy. You'd think in times like these you could learn to change a little, but no, you are committed to this act." Pausing to catch her breath, "That's why you are alone, that's why I am alone." In Milas head, he would always be to blame, for everything.
He couldn't understand how she could be so careless over something so mininal. Surely there were flowers to smell inside her community, not out here in the open where she is vulnerable. "You are being so selfish, Mila." He knew he had no right in saying how she goes about her day to day, he had no control over that when they were married and he sure as shit didn't have it now either. He just couldn't lose her, even if she didn't care about him anymore. "You need to be safe and outside the walls you live in is not safe." He finally dropped his arms and let her go.
Hearing her spew her words hurt him, it really did. She was angry with him and it is more than just the flower. He was angry with himself too. "I didn't say anybody asked me to do anything, Mila. I get it you're angry with me, that's fine. Be angry at me but be fucking safe if you're leaving those gates." He was trying his best to control his temper and keep his voice low incase there were any infected around. "I am not like you, Mi. I can't sit behind a wall aimlessly and hope that one day whatever this all ends." He couldn't sit behind a wall and have time to think about the loss of their son everyday, he couldn't look at his wife who hated him and blamed him for the loss of their son, he needed to be on the move with no time to think anymore.
She listened to the birds singing around the skies as she smelt the flowers, her shoulders dropping as she relaxed for what felt like the first time in months. It probably was for the first time in months. For a second, Mila forgot what had happened to the world, to her son, to her. There was life again. Until arms wrapped around her, holding her neck in place so that nothing she did could make her move in their hold. That moment of peace was gone within seconds, a gasp full of pure terror escaped from her lips in its place. She could have swore that the world stopped turning just for a second.
Then annoyance took over, anger returned like it had never left. She didn't notice that her shoulders had dropped once again in his grasp, knowing that she was safe, because she was too busy trying to wriggle out from his touch. "Kaide, holy hell, you better let me go!" Her voice was at a quiet yell, but a stern one. "I am a grown woman, I can stop and smell the flowers if I damn well want to. Ain't nothing out here coming to attack me right now, except you!"
Kaide held her in place for a brief second longer before letting her go and turning her to face him, hands holding onto her shoulders as though she was a child. "No, Mila. You don't get to just stop and smell the flowers." He couldn't believe what he was hearing right now, there was no way she was being for real. Smell the flowers? When the world seems to be ending around them she wants to smell the flowers? She just didn't understand just how much he needed her to look out for herself. Losing their son, Shane. was hard enough and he didn't think he could survive the loss of her too.
"You're lucky it was me, Mila. What if it was somebody else? What if it was somebody who didn't want to be friends with you or smell the flowers too. What if they wanted to hurt you or worse." He was furious in her stupidy. "You don't understand what it is like out here, okay? I've seen things that you can't even imagine. I have had to do things I don't even want you to witness too. You are smarter than this."

Even if todays world, Mila still stopped to smell the flowers. She knew that if she didn't take little things to enjoy during the day, she turned into someone she didn't know anymore. The grief, the anger, it would consume her completely and that was not going to be apart of her plan. Not as long as she could help it, she would control things.
Crouching down right outside the walls of her found home, she ran her fingertips through the growing grass, letting them land on a bundle of unpicked wildflowers. She carefully plucked one from the ground, bringing it up to her nose to smell it. She let the sweet aroma take over her senses, closing her eyes for the moment as she remembered what it used to be like when she would smell the flowers before. She felt safe for the moment, as if the world around her wasn't something scary and unknown now. It also meant that she didn't hear the footsteps coming up from behind her either.
Spotting his ex wife close by he couldn't help but roll his eyes. Not because it's her but because he thought he'd taught her better than this. If he couldn't be around to look after her he needed her to look out for herself. He already lost his son and blamed himself everyday for it, he can't lose her too. He won't lose her. It was small things like this that would get her killed.
Walk up behind Mila he grabbed her from behind, his arms placed around her throat in a chokehold. "And now you're dead, Mila." He was being stern with her, he may be over reacting but to him this was literally life or death. The world was far more dangerous than it ever was before. "I thought I taught you better than this, than to sit around smelling the flowers." He still had her in a tight grip as he spoke, he could feel himself infuriated with the situation but it was moreso out of worry.

š āāĀ»āāLOCATIONāāā¦āāAPARTMENT BUILDING ROOFTOP OVERLOOKING THE SUPPLY ROUTE BETWEN PROTECTED COMMUNITIES
there was no knowing the precise schedule for military patrols nor supply convoys passing through. miles had spent a couple of weeks observing them from afar, tracking the movements of guards protecting the lives of those stationed somewhere nearby. there were rumors, guesses, of the protected locations, but they differed from person to person, which could either mean that no one knew where the communities were located or that someone was indeed correct, but there was no way of knowing which whisper was correct without risking putting oneself in danger. every step was risky now, every decision could be your last. with that in mind, miles was more than fine to observe some more until he gained enough intel to decide on the next step in his plan.
relying on silence and keeping a low profile, miles preferred to observe from a distance or from a certain height that would buy him some time to escape in case something unexpected were to take place. right before sunset, miles swiftly entered an abandoned apartment building, climbing all the way to the rooftop for a better view of the surrounding streets. it had become some sort of a habit of his by now. scavenge for supplies, secure a spot for the night, and climb somewhere high to observe. this evening happened to be one of note. miles marked down the approximate time and location in his notebook before resuming his surveillance.
this time, āit was only a couple of military convoys. āmost likely transferring supplies. given the inconsistent schedule, āthere had to be a reason behind such timing. ārunning low on supplies, āperhaps? āmiles' train of thought was interrupted by the sound of something or someone climbing up the ladder, causing him to reach for the knife attached to his right thigh. he quietly positioned himself facing the spot where the intruder would soon reveal themselves. miles held his breath for a long moment until he spotted another survivor climb up. āhe had seen them around before, ābut that was not enough for him to remove his hand from the knife.āāāāthis rooftop is occupied.āāāāmiles stated without raising his voice, āfingers slowly wrapping around the hilt of his knife, eyes fixed on the stranger.
Kaide's go to spots to rest for the night had to follow one of two things; behind secured doors or up off of the ground and out of the way. Flat rooftops were usually perfect to keep himself safe while he slept, they usually came with both of those options. It was quite unsual though to find one that was already occupied by another person but there was always a first. Usually he'd just leave and find somewhere else, he hated shacking up with anybody else for the night because he just didn't trust many. Especially in this new world they were living in.
"Room for one more?" He suggested to the other, he wasn't exactly wanting to roam around much longer in the dark, the lack of lighting made it difficult and the option to use a flashlight was off the cards for him. It brought far too much attention in the dead of the night, from people or the infected. "I'm sure you know better than anyone that going out there now is a death sentence."
He wasn't enitrely sure why the other was here, it also wasn't his business either so he didn't care to ask. He just needed a safe place to rest his head before continuing on with his journey the next day. Of course, it was hard not to notice though that the other was watching what was happening in the area like a hawk though.

Kaide had spotted both the infected and Daena not too far back and had been keeping a safe distance from them both, he was weighing up his options and trying to see who was more of the threat between the two. Recently it had become hard to tell who posed more of a risk to his life and that was kind of shit to think about, only two months into whatever this was and humanity was already seemingly taking a turn.
"I just got here but I can leave." He spoke lowly but jokingly, enough for her to hear him behind her but not loud enough to bring attention to the two of them.

BEFORE THE OUTBREAK ā
trigger warnings pregnancy struggles
kaide grew up the middle child, he had one older brother and a younger sister.
in school he was the class clown, he struggled to sit still and do his work but he excelled in anything physical. he just was not built to sit in a classroom quietly and he had made peace with that.
once leaving school he had no idea what to do with his life, he just knew he didn't want to stay home. he enlisted for the military at 18 years old.
kaide met his wife, mila, through a friend at a bar when he was back in cali waiting to be deployed again. He was 25 and hadn't had any serious relationships at this point, he was a typical military boy who just hooked up with whoever when he was stationed wherever and had no plans to settle down anytime soon. that all changed the day he met his wife.
it was a fast moving relationship and within a year of dating he had proposed to her and they were married in typical military man behaviour.
after serving for 12 years, kaide left the military and was honourably discharged at the age of thirty years old. he and mila had discussed that there was no way they'd be starting their family while he was still serving actively so he made the choice to finally leave.
pregnancy did not come as quick as they both had assumed, he figured he'd leave and she'd fall pregnant almost immediately but that truly was not the case and it wasn't until 4 years later that she fell pregnant.
the marriage was not the greatest, if anything it was mainly on kaide's end. upon leaving the military he kind of lost himself and didn't know what to do with himself. he was neglectful towards his wife. great dad but terrible husband.
he got a job as a bounty hunter in an attempt at getting the feeling of the military again but it never really felt the same. he was great at the job but still never really returned back to the person he was.
when their son was 8 they divorced and kaide moved out of the house and into his own place.
AFTER THE OUTBREAK ā
when the outbreak happened in full fledge kaide's priority was his family. he attempted to get to his ex wife and son but of course the panic of the city made that difficult. the traffic was backed up, nobody was acting or thinking rationally and by the time he got there his son was already gone, he blamed himself and so did his ex wife.
kaide didn't want to join any sort of community, he wanted to be alone and whatever happened to him happened. however, he made sure mila was in safe hands before going his own way.
strangely he felt comfortable in the new world they were living and it gave him a strange comfort again, as though he belong in this kind of life.
the last couple months have been a change for him, he is feeling like himself again and although the world is still changing and in a dangerous way this is the most kaide has felt like kaide for a while. he plans to continue bounty hunting in whatever way that looks in this new life.
