🛠 » STATUS … CLOSED 🛠 » LOCATION … HIKING TRAIL 🛠 » SURVIVOR(S) … DAENA OSORIO [ @rottblooms ]
it would be easy to imagine that most, if not the entirety, of the county had already been pretty much picked over, given the time that had passed. which would require traveling much longer distances and, consequently, facing an increased level of danger, too. and as of right now, miles was not yet ready to move on from ventura county. having recently found a map in a tourist shop, miles had started marking down certain locations, streets, and buildings he had already checked. more than half of the county was still left unexplored, which was the direction miles was now heading in, along with his companion. ❝ we should get there soon enough if we keep up the pace. ❞ he pointed out after taking a glance over the map and the unexplored streets they were trying to reach, choosing one of the hiking trails in hopes of avoiding most of the infected. ❝ how are you holding up? ❞ miles stared ahead, allowing the question to dissipate into the thin air, should daena not wish to answer it.
🛠 » STATUS … CLOSED 🛠 » LOCATION … THE MARINA (RESTAURANT) 🛠 » SURVIVOR(S) … SEBASTIAN BARNETT [ @b1dsp1atter ]
having personally searched the streets connected to the main supply route between the protected communities, miles decided to scavenge farther from his current shelter. the trip came with its risks, of course. however, sooner or later, he would be forced to move. he left the house he was staying in before afternoon, hoping to make it back while there was still daylight in case anything went wrong. and, as most eventually learned, plans rarely went as expected. it took a little longer to reach the marina than miles had originally planned. the route there wasn't one of the safest, forcing him to take a couple of detours along the way. once he arrived, one of the first buildings miles went for was an abandoned restaurant by the marina. two months into the apocalypse had rendered most places already looted, but if one knew where to look, supplies could still be found tucked away in places most wouldn't think to search. it was getting late, which meant miles would have to wait the night out somewhere nearby. after thoroughly checking the restaurant, he found little more than a single pack of crackers. it would have to do. he quietly slipped through the back door just as an infected stumbled through the front. pressing his back against the wall, miles paused for a long moment, waiting for the infected to occupy itself before he could move. he held his breath, listening intently for any sounds coming from inside the restaurant. however, he picked up on something else entirely.
tilting his head as he scanned the surroundings, miles spotted another figure nearby, his brows furrowing for a moment. truly a small world. or perhaps the other was following him. either way, neither of them had any business being outside at this hour. ❝ it's empty. ❞ miles mouthed to sebastian, nodding toward the building behind him. although not inherently friendly toward strangers, there was no reason for anyone to put their life in danger when miles could help it.
✟ » STATUS … CLOSED ✟ » LOCATION … SAINT MARLOWE (HALLWAY, SECOND FLOOR) ✟ » SURVIVOR(S) … NATHAN SHAW [ @solar-salutations ]
the pacing within the hospital differed based on the day and circumstances. some days were eerily still and quiet, with an unease indicating the time inside the shelter had stopped altogether. if not for occasional supply runs or breaks spent in the parking lot under the sun, time within the rather gloomy medical center would weigh much heavier on already oppressed survivors. the two things drew found helpful in such situations were the company of another and keeping themselves busy as much as they could. today just happened to be one of the more hectic days at the center for them. between assisting other survivors with stocking supplies, checking in on a few injured, and keeping up with updates on the whiteboard, drew was constantly moving through the same hallways, passing familiar faces all the time. well, at least those who were also on the move. now, on their perhaps eighth walk through one of the main hallways on the second floor, drew spotted a face they hadn't seen for a couple of days, which was a rare situation for them to find themselves in.
❝ hey, where have you run off to? ❞ they called out to nathan, catching up to him as both of them seemed to be heading in the same direction. ❝ long time no see. ❞ drew chuckled, finding it amusing that, given that they were under the same roof, they had somehow still managed not to run into one another in the past forty-eight hours. ❝ i think i lost my flashlight somewhere, mind helping me look? ❞ they asked while scanning the floor and the surfaces of crates and boxes placed along the hallway. drew would find it eventually, but having a friendly face to accompany them was just too good an opportunity to pass up.
✟ » STATUS … CLOSED ✟ » LOCATION … SAINT MARLOWE (THE GROUND FLOOR) ✟ » SURVIVOR(S) … NICOLAS BARRA [ @deathvotion ]
the notion of personal space came naturally for most. the ability to understand and respect one's breathing room. it's a given. or so drew thought at first. personal space did not exist at saint marlowe. if one managed to find a quiet spot somehow, it was certainly short-lived. it's not that having someone nearby wasn't appreciated. it was crucial for everybody's survival. possessing numbers. the more the merrier, as they say. however, everything had its price. and the price in this situation was one's sanity, or what's left of it by now. the culprit? some would say there is no one to blame. just... unfortunate circumstances. well, in this very moment, drew found themselves in a very regrettable position. today's assignment was to reinforce the ground floor's windows with what was left of the furniture. precisely drew's course of action for the past five or so hours, and somehow, fate seemed intent on playing tricks on them. ❝ you must be joking. ❞ drew muttered under their breath the second their eyes landed on a painfully familiar figure at the end of the hall.
❝ last i checked, you were assigned cleaning duty. upstairs. ❞ they called out to nicolas before stepping closer to a desk to grab another wooden plank, positioning it across the window and nailing it into the window's frame with a hammer. ❝ don't [ … ] say anything. i'm really not in the mood today for another talk. ❞ it was already a long day, and the last thing they wanted was for him to share yet another of the many 'harsh truths' of the world.

✟ » STATUS … CLOSED ✟ » LOCATION … SAINT MARLOWE (THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE) ✟ » SURVIVOR(S) … VIOLET BARRON [ @lastdcys ]
it's not often saint marlowe receives supplies either from cedar grove or supply runs, so each time a new shipment arrives, it lifts the community's spirit. thus, seeing a few boxes of recently arrived goods in the administrative office, which posed as a storage room, brought a temporary sense of relief to drew. the community will make it a little further, and in times like these, that's all that mattered, really — surviving till the next day. ❝ there's always something that needs to be done, it didn't even occur to me to track time between shipments, ❞ drew shared while reaching for the next item in the closest supply box. ❝ this time, though [ … ] ❞ a slow exhale followed as drew shook their head, a faint, uneasy smile crossing their features. ❝ it had me counting days. ❞ it was a reminder that no matter how comfortable and safe one would become in a fixed place, there was no guarantee of it continuing much longer. always one step away from a type of failure no one would come back from. ❝ this goes on your shelf. ❞ drew quickly added, handing violet a box of medication.

🛠 » STATUS … CLOSED (4/4) 🛠 » LOCATION … APARTMENT BUILDING ROOFTOP OVERLOOKING THE SUPPLY ROUTE BETWEN PROTECTED COMMUNITIES
there was no knowing the precise schedule for military patrols nor supply convoys passing through. miles had spent a couple of weeks observing them from afar, tracking the movements of guards protecting the lives of those stationed somewhere nearby. there were rumors, guesses, of the protected locations, but they differed from person to person, which could either mean that no one knew where the communities were located or that someone was indeed correct, but there was no way of knowing which whisper was correct without risking putting oneself in danger. every step was risky now, every decision could be your last. with that in mind, miles was more than fine to observe some more until he gained enough intel to decide on the next step in his plan. relying on silence and keeping a low profile, miles preferred to observe from a distance or from a certain height that would buy him some time to escape in case something unexpected were to take place. right before sunset, miles swiftly entered an abandoned apartment building, climbing all the way to the rooftop for a better view of the surrounding streets. it had become some sort of a habit of his by now. scavenge for supplies, secure a spot for the night, and climb somewhere high to observe. this evening happened to be one of note. miles marked down the approximate time and location in his notebook before resuming his surveillance.
this time, it was only a couple of military convoys. most likely transferring supplies. given the inconsistent schedule, there had to be a reason behind such timing. running low on supplies, perhaps? miles' train of thought was interrupted by the sound of something or someone climbing up the ladder, causing him to reach for the knife attached to his right thigh. he quietly positioned himself facing the spot where the intruder would soon reveal themselves. miles held his breath for a long moment until he spotted another survivor climb up. he had seen them around before, but that was not enough for him to remove his hand from the knife. ❝ this rooftop is occupied. ❞ miles stated without raising his voice, fingers slowly wrapping around the hilt of his knife, eyes fixed on the stranger.
✟ » STATUS … CLOSED (4/4) ✟ » LOCATION … SAINT MARLOWE (THE OUTPATIENT WAITING ROOM)
each member of the community was expected to visit the outpatient waiting room at least twice a day. once in the morning to pick up any new assignments for the day and once in the evening to stay up to date with any new information or changes taking place. drew was one of those who frequented the space more often than most, even when they had memorized inventory numbers, names, and who was supposed to be assigned to what task. there was always this lingering sense of urgency, like things could go wrong at any minute and they had to be there before it happened. the names of the lost ones kept adding up on the whiteboard, only contributing to the inner dread and helplessness silently shared by the entire community. it certainly did not help to spend every free waking moment staring at the board, wishing for the increasing list of names of those who did not return to disappear. the sound of a door's creaking hinges announced the entrance of another. ❝ the list keeps increasing each day. at this rate we'll soon be losing more than we're receiving. ❞ drew observed out loud while staring ahead at the whiteboard.
the most recent name, only yesterday added to the list, stood out the most to them. ❝ remember the boy they brought in a couple of weeks ago? roy? he was still so young, so [ … ] full of life, ❞ they tilted their head then, looking to the side at a fellow member of saint marlowe. ❝ he did not believe we are safe here. that's the last thing he told me before he went missing. ❞ drew could not bring themselves to declare the boy dead. if everyone who no longer was at saint marlowe were to be pronounced dead, the inner motivations and hope within the community would shatter. they could not afford to take away one of the last reasons for everyone to keep moving. ❝ did you know [ … ] anyone among those recently added to the list? ❞ a pair of eyes shifted from the other person back to the whiteboard.
