06. Don't be delusional
At some point the quiet of your room had stopped feeling peaceful and started feeling irritating. Everything felt too still, too slow, like the world had decided to pause and with it the summer heat arrived at the same time.
You weren't much of a summer person, loving the cold seasons, but the heat at this point was kicking you out from your own home!
"Okay" you muttured, already slipping your shoes on "we're going outside."
No plan, no destination, just walking wherever the warm wind takes you.
Shattering (Phainon x Reader)
The Wishbearer: Part I
Series masterlist
Synopsis: For centuries, Phainon has been cursed to grant mortal desiresâcompelled to answer every wish, no matter how hollow or greedy, while being forbidden from wanting anything himself. Watched by a greedy god, he exists only to serve, never to choose.
But then he hears your longing, and it shakes something loose in him. Because whatever is forming between you was never meant to exist. And the universe is starting to notice.
A/N: The concept of this story came to me in a dream months ago and refused to leave until I finally wrote it. This is part I of a multi-part series. The series is already mostly written. Iâm just finalizing and posting each part due to the length. :) Enjoy!

Phainon remembers heat.
Not the gentle warmth of sunlight or the comforting glow of a hearth, but a searing, consuming heat that burned through everything soft inside him and replaced it with something divine.
Something other. A power that hummed beneath his skin like a second heartbeat. Constant, relentless, not entirely his own.
But before the heat, before the transformation, before the curse, before he became something more and less than human, Phainon remembers fire.

05. Same spot, same crowd
Mydei, what to say about the biggest rockstar out there? he spent most of his life in his garage composing music, in hope of finding a spark of light that would turn into a big rockstar group, at first he didn't really have a purpose , he just thought it was a fun little idea that maybe in some way, could turn into something bigger.
He hadn't expected it to become his.
Now, he sat quietly in his room, the noise of a big crowd long gone, replaced by something far more quiet. Fan notes lay scattered in front of him, folded paper and rushed handwriting, pieces of strangers thoughts left behind after the show.
For a long time, he had told himself none of it mattered, it was just music, a noise he created, something he happened to be good at.
But his fingers hovered over one of the notes unmoving, maybe, somewhere along the way, he had found a purpose after all....

The room is quieter now. Not silent, but settled.
Kataraâs hands remain steady, the soft glow of water flickering against the manâs skin.
âI need a second,â Aang says quietly, the comment aimed at Katara. âCan you come with me?â
Katara hesitates as she glances between Aang and the stranger.
âYeah, just for a moment,â she says, pulling her hands away. Before she leaves, Katara shoots you a look, silently asking you to continue healing the man while sheâs gone.
You nod, already close enough to apply the skills Katara had been teaching you over the years. A cool sensation reaches your fingertips as your hands hover over the muscular man below you.
Behind you, Sokka and Toph are still bickering about something that doesnât matter.
But youâre not focused on them.
Not entirely.
Because youâre still aware that Zuko is beside you. The fact that he hasnât moved.
Thereâs a shift in the air. Subtle, but enough for you to notice it.
âWait-â
His eyes snap open as he bolts upright. Air explodes outward in a sharp, violent gust. You flinch, bracing for an impact, one that never comes.
Something moves in front of you first.
Zuko.
His arm comes up instinctively, blocking the force as it whips past.
For a moment, you donât move. Don't speak. You just remain there, aware of him. How close he is. The heat at your side. The way he didnât hesitate. And the way he still hasn't moved.
âEarthbender!â the man shouts, turning sharply towards Toph, air spiraling around him again as he prepares to strike. But, before he gets the chance, Aang interrupts.
âHey! Stop, sheâs not your enemy. Youâre safe.â
âWow,â Toph says dryly.â Someone woke up on the wrong side of the mountain.â
The manâs breaths slow down, his chest rising and falling erratically as the tension drains from his body. His eyes move across the room, taking in each face, one by one. Confusion. Disorientation. Something heavier beneath it.
And then-
They stop on you. Not exactly a glance, more so a pause. Almost like heâs trying to place something that isnât there.
He pushed up from his position, showing a thick, powerful bicep and a shoulder that caught the lighting just right. As he straightened, his muscles flexed, emphasizing their definition.
Not bad for a 1,000 year old manâŠ
âWhere is she?â he questions, his voice sharp. âWhereâs Avatar Sonam?â
The group looks at each other, obvious discomfort sweeping across everyone's faces.
âYouâve been asleep for a long time,â Aang begins. âMany things have changed, Iâm the avatar now.â He says carefully.
âThen that means SonamâŠâ The man trails off.
âWell! On the bright side, youâre an airbender too! Which means Aangâs not the last!â Sokka says
A frown falls on the manâs face. âLast?â
Silence envelopes the room.
Aang exhales slowly. âThe Air Nomads⊠theyâre gone.â
The man doesnât react immediately, instead he stares blankly. Almost like heâs waiting for Aang to correct himself, but the moment never comes.
âThen.. the staff,â he lifts his head. âItâs our only chance.â
âA weapon?â Aang cuts in.
The man shakes his head. âNo,â his voice steadies. âItâs a gift.â
âShe gave it to me. BeforeâŠeverything. She believed air shouldnât disappear with us.â
His eyes flick up again, resting on you.
âNot completely.â
Aang inhales sharply- something finally clicks. His eyes widen, something bright and overwhelming breaking through all at once. âThen.. that means-â He doesnât finish. He turns, and rushes outside.
âAang- wait!â Katara calls out, already beginning to move after him.
Sokka follows quickly, throwing one last confused glance over his shoulder. Toph lingers just long enough to mutter something inaudible under her breath before she heads out as well.
Zuko doesnât move right away. Heâs stood now, watching. For a second it almost feels like he may say something. But he doesnât. His jaw tightens slightly before he looks away, and follows the others out.
Just like that, everyoneâs gone. Everyone but you and this stranger.
The flaps of the tent shut behind the others, and the room settles into a quieter kind of stillness. One thatâs contained and comfortable.
You remain where you are, knees pressed into the floor, hands hovering faintly over him as the last traces of water cling to your fingertips. For a second, you consider getting up, following the others outâŠ
but you donât.
A few silent moments pass before he speaks.
âYou stayed.â
His voice is different now. Lower. Calmer. Layered with a hint of confusion.
You glance up at him, one brow lifting slightly. âYeah, well⊠someone had to make sure you didnât wake up and start trying to throw people through walls again.â
Thereâs the faintest shift in his expression, subtle, but unmistakable. Itâs not quite a smile, but still close enough to count.
âI suppose thatâs fair.â
You let out a small breath through your nose, attention drifting back to your hands as you refocus. The water responds more easily this time, slower and steadier, like itâs finally listening.
âYouâre not as bad as you were a minute ago,â you mutter. âThatâs progress.â
âIâll take it,â he replies.
A brief silence settles again, softer this time.
It doesnât feel like you need to fill it, but you do anyway.
âSo⊠Avatar Sonam,â you say, glancing at him. âYou knew her well?â
That gets a more noticeable reaction.
His gaze shifts slightly, something more distant slipping in around the edges.
âYes.â
The answer is simple, but his tone has weight behind it.
You tilt your head just a little. âThat didnât sound like a casual acquaintance.â
A quiet exhale leaves him, almost like he wasnât expecting the question, but doesnât mind answering it.
âShe wasnât,â he says. âShe was⊠everything the world needed her to be.â
You huff lightly. âThat sounds exhausting.â
That actually earns you a real reaction, a faint breath of amusement.
âIt was,â he admits. âBut she never treated it that way.â
You study him for a moment, something about the way he talks about her catching your attention. Itâs clear that what heâs felt for her is different from respect, thereâs something deeper. Familiar.
âSounds like you admired her.â
His gaze flicks back to you, more focused now.
âI did.â
âAnd you?â he asks, quieter. âThe way you spoke to your Avatar⊠you seem close.â
You hesitate, just for a second.
âYeah,â you admit. âAangâs⊠Aang. Kind of impossible not to be close to him.â
A small smile tugs at your lips despite yourself. âEven when heâs being reckless.â
âReckless?â he echoes.
âYou didnât see him five minutes ago?â you gesture vaguely toward the door. âRuns off the second he has a life-changing realization. Very on brand.â
That earns another quiet huff from him- easier this time.
âI suppose some things donât change.â
âGuess not.â
The conversation dips again, but it doesnât feel like itâs ending. It feels like itâs shifting.
You glance back at him, studying him a little more openly now.
âFor what itâs worth,â you say, a bit more casually, âyou handled waking up a thousand years in the future pretty well.â
He raises a brow slightly. âDid I?â
âYou only tried to attack two people,â you shrug. âCouldâve been worse.â
That gets a smile.
âWow, high praise.â
âDonât let it go to your head.â
For a moment, neither of you speaks, falling into a comfortable silence once again, but his gaze lingers.
âYouâre calm,â he says after a second. âMore than the others.â
You blink at that. âYouâre saying that like itâs unusual.â
âIt is,â he replies simply. âMost people react differently to things they donât understand.â
You glance down briefly, considering what heâs said.
âIâve got some experience with that,â you say, tone lighter than the thought behind it.
He doesnât push. Just nods, like that answer is enough.
You hesitate for a second, then huff quietly.
ââŠIâve been talking to you this whole time and I donât even know your name.â
That catches his attention more than anything else so far.
âTaga.â he says.
You repeat it quietly, like youâre testing it on your tongue. âTaga.â
A small nod follows.
You begin your introduction, âIâm-
âI know, he cuts you off. âThey said your name.â
Taga's gaze doesn't waver.
"I know," he repeats, quieter this time. "They said your name."
You blink. "...Okay. And?"
Weirdo. Whyâd he repeat himself? âŠMaybe heâs got some brain damage?
"And nothing." The faintest trace of something crosses his face, not quite amusement, not quite curiosity. Something in between. "I just wanted you to know I was listening."
And then it clicks.
Oh.
Oh no.
Did this fucker hear me call him attractive?
You clear your throat, pulling your hands back from him fully now, the last traces of water dissolving into the air. "Well. You're healed enough. Don't go throwing people through walls and you should be fine."
You move to stand, gathering yourself.
âLeaving so soon?â
âIâm sure the others are waiting,â you say simply.
He nods slowly, his eyes are still tracking you in a steady, unhurried rhythm- one that you find unsettling. Heâs focused. Analyzing you like youâre something thatâs worth paying attention to.
Snap out of it.
âThank you for staying.â
You pause, your hand resting on a tent pole. âDonât mention it.â
The air hits you first. Itâs cooler out here, the kind of cold that makes you feel like you can finally breathe again. You can hear the others nearby, Sokkaâs voice carrying over everything else as Aangâs laugh cuts through it.
Then you notice something- rather, someone.
Zuko is standing maybe ten feet from the door.
Not walking. Not doing anything, really. JustâŠstanding there with his arms crossed, his eyes set somewhere in the distance, seemingly nowhere in particular. It honestly may have been convincing if youâd come out thirty seconds later.
You stare at him.
He looks over, and something flickers across his face- itâs not quite shame, and definitely not surprise, but he relaxes his features, allowing them to settle back to neutral.
âHey,â he finally says.
You look at him. At the door. Then back at him.
â..How long have you been standing there?â
Silence.
â...I just got here.â
You look at him for a moment, noticing the tips of his ears are a light shade of red.
Sure you did.
You donât say anything directly. But the way you look at him is saying it for you, and he knows it, because his jaw does that thing- the tight, barely-there thing- and he looks away first.
âHe okay?â Zuko asks, still not looking you in the eyes.
âYou tell me,â you say, shifting slightly, preparing to join the rest of the group.
Before you can step away, the tent flap opens.
Taga steps through it, and thereâs about half a second where itâs just the three of you. Zuko standing close enough behind you that you feel him pause.
Taga looks at you first. Then at Zuko. His look isnât exactly suspicious, itâs more pointed. The same steady, unhurried attention he seems to give everything.
The corner of his mouth lifts slightly.
â âTheyâre waiting,â hm?â he asks, the question directed at you.
â...Yeah,â you say, nodding your head towards the others.
He holds your gaze for a moment before he moves forward towards the group, unhurried, and rather unbothered.
You turn your head slightly, just enough to catch Zukoâs expression.
His eyes are tracking Taga with a specific kind of stillness, the kind that means heâs working very hard at seeming like he doesnât care.
He shouldnât.
You face forward again. âCome on,â you say quietly.
Without responding, he follows behind you to join the others.
When you reach the group, Aang is already pacing. Thereâs a different energy to him now, restlessness, almost too overwhelming for the space around him.
He looks up, noticing the three of you approaching.
âYou said the staff can give bending,â Aang says quickly. âHow?â
Taga doesn't answer right away. He steps forward steadily. âIt wasnât meant for everyone,â he says. âOnly those who have the strength to wield it without losing themselves entirely."
âLosing themselves?â Sokka repeats. âThatâs a little concerning, isnât it?â
Toph snorts. âWell arenât you a smart cookie?â
âIt means power without proper balance is dangerous,â Taga replies simply.
Aang seems to filter out a few of the previous comments, stepping closer as urgency bled into his voice. âBut it can bring back airbenders?â
Taga eyes meet Aangâs once again. âYes. Only if we reach it first.â
You glance at him, briefly.
He notices.
Of course heâd notice.
And across from you, Zuko notices too. That look.
The look you used to give him so many years ago.
âWeâll leave now,â Aang decides almost instantly. âIf theyâre after it too, we canât risk getting there late.â
âThe journey wonât be easy,â Taga adds. âWe must travel through the Endless Ocean.â
Sokka groans. âWe can never catch a break, can we?â
Katara steps forward, arms firmly crossed. âThen weâll go together,â she says. âLike we always do.â
Taga studies her for a moment thoughtfully. âThe skies can be unforgiving,â he says carefully. âEspeciallly for those who arenât used to them.â
Kataraâs eyes narrow in return. âWell, then itâs a good thing Iâm not doing this alone.â
You can almost feel Toph grinning from somewhere behind you.
âYeah,â you add, âweâre pretty much a package deal.â
Tagaâs gaze shifts to you, with that same quiet focus. âIâve noticed.â
âRight!â Aang claps his hands together, cutting through whatever moment may have been forming between you and Taga. âThen itâs settled.â He steps forward, smiling brighter than usual, if thatâs even possible. âWelcome to Team Avatar.â
â...What was your name again?â
âTaga.â He says plainly.
Sokkaâs brows lift, âCool. Very mysterious.â
âAlright,â Aang says, already moving. âLetâs go. We can talk more on the way.â
-
The steady hum of the airship settles beneath your feet as it cuts through the sky, the structure creaking softly with each shift in the wind. The open sky compliments the atmosphere, stretching endlessly beyond the railing.
Most of the group has spread out across the deck. Katara stands near the front, focused, her hands resting lightly against the railing as she watches the horizon. Sokka lingers nearby, talking too much as usual. Toph sits cross-legged off to the side, with an unreadable expression, though the faint tilt of her head suggests sheâs listening to everything anyway.
And then thereâs Taga. He stands beside you now, one hand resting loosely against the edge of the ship, his gaze fixed outward. His presence makes the space feel quieter than it actually is.
âHave you traveled like this often?â he asks after a while, the question only meant for you.
You shift slightly, leaning your weight against the railing. âMore than youâd believe, but you get used to it eventually. The height stops feeling so overwhelming.â
âI donât think I would,â he says. âNot entirely.â
A faint smile tugs at your lips. âI thought airbenders were supposed to love this kind of thing.â
âThey do,â he replies. âThat doesnât mean they donât feel the distance beneath them.â
Something about the way he says it makes your brows furrow in confusion.
Before you can respond-
âYou get used to it.â
The voice comes from behind you.
You turn, startled enough that your shoulder brushes lightly against the railing.
Zuko stands there now, closer than you remember him being a moment ago.
âYou just stop thinking about the fall,â he adds, gaze fixed ahead.
â...Right,â you say slowly.
Tagaâs attention shifts between the two of you.
âYou speak from experience?â he asks.
Zuko nods once. âSomething like that.â
What was once an easy conversation now becomes edged with something sharper, something unspoken.
You exhale softly, trying to cut through it.
âWell,â you say, leaning back slightly, âI guess fear brings people together.â
Zuko shifts beside you, his arm brushing yours for the briefest second before he stills again. âDidnât seem like you were worried earlier,â he says, quieter now.
You glance at him. âEarlier?â
âWhen you almost fell.â
Oh.
You huff lightly, shaking your head. âWeâre still on that?â
âYou couldâve gotten hurt.â
You tilt your head, a hint of something teasing slipping in despite yourself. âCareful, Zuko. Someone might think you were worried about me.â
Something crosses his face. Quick. Gone almost immediately.
âWould that be so strange?â he says lowly. Almost like heâs talking to himself more than you. Heâs not teasing you back, but not exactly deflecting either.
It sounds uncomfortably close to a real question.
The air between you shifts.
And something in you, something thatâs been sitting quietly at the bottom of your chest for twelve long years- it rises up before you can push it back down.
âYou didnât seem to care before.â
The words come out quieter than you intended. More honest than pointed. Like theyâd been waiting just beneath the surface this whole time and that one question was enough to loosen them.
You hadnât meant to say it. Itâs definitely too late to take it back.
Zuko goes very still. Not the controlled stillness from before, something different. The kind of still that comes from something landing somewhere it wasnât expected. His eyes stay forward, fixed on some point on the horizon that has nothing to do with any of this.
A long moment passes.
âI was going to say something,â he says carefully. Like heâs handling something fragile. âOn Appa. You didnât-â
âYeah, I know what happened on Appa-â
âThen you know I didnât get to finish.â
You open your mouth, preparing to say something before you close it again.
Because you hadn't actually thought about that. You'd run. You'd turned away before he could say whatever came after âabout what happenedâ and you'd spent twelve years deciding you already knew what it would have been.
What if you were wrong.
You don't say that.
You don't say anything.
The silence that follows is the loudest thing you've heard all day. Fuller than any of the ones before it. Like something just cracked open between the two of you and neither of you knows what to do about what's inside it.
Taga watches the horizon.
He doesn't say a word.
But you feel his attention shift, subtle, quiet, the way everything about him is subtle and quiet, and somehow that's worse than if he'd said something outright.
You exhale. Slow.
âForget it,â he says. And he goes inside.
Just like that.
Just like always.
You stay at the railing, hands gripping the edge, staring at the door he just walked through as the wind tears past you. Your mind drifts to twelve years ago, how you were the one who walked away first.
Seems like youâve both gotten very good at that.

scale of attraction.
summary: zuko's straight-forwardness in appreciating the attractive qualities of the lone stranger saved by aang has you curious on whether you could get him to spill on what he thinks of you. (no major movie spoilers)
pairing: firelord! zuko x reader
content: fluff, idiot zuko my love, mutual pining, firelord zuko đđ
"He's very attractive." Zuko admits, eyes unblinking as he stares at the unconscious stranger.
The entire team whips their heads to stare at Zuko in unconcealed shock.
"What?" Zuko mutters, gaze lingering on the surprised expressions casted onto him, before eventually landing on yours. "He is. It's all in the bone structure."
You blink, unable to process his straight-forward words that landed on you like a gut punch. You've never considered it, the fact that Zuko also found others attractive.
It seems like a completely, silly notion now that the thought has verbalised itself in your mind. Of course Zuko would notice if others were considered attractive. Maybe it just never occurred to you in all your years of knowing himâof also finding himâ
You clear your throat, forcing yourself to look away from his prying gaze, confusion alight in his eyes from your taken-aback expression.
If he's unconsciously considered the attractiveness of this stranger... has he everâno, this should not be your priority. It doesn't matter what he thinks of you, it's not like it would change a thing. He's practically admitted it non-verbally through that monotonous admission of his, that a person's looks is assessed by him in a completely, impersonal standpoint.
Bone structure? You shouldn't be curious. Knowing Zuko, he might accidentally insult your structure if you asked.
