case 13 : nice to meet you
"...Is that how you really feel?"
The moment you saw him, your entire body went rigid.
It wasn't even intentional. The reaction came before your thoughts did, your shoulders tensing as your fingers instinctively tighten around the crumpled tissue in your hand once again. The sting on your face barely registered anymore compared to the sudden sinking feeling in your chest.
Varka stood a short distance away, one hand loosely holding the strap of the duffel bag slung over his shoulder. He looked like he stopped midway through walking the moment he heard your voice. There was no anger on his face, no frustration either.
Somehow, that made it worse.
Beside you, Wriothesley glanced between the two of you before exhaling softly through his nose. "...Well," he said, rising from the bench. "This feels like my cue to leave. I'll go grab some ice for you, [Name]."
"You two clearly need to talk more than you need me hovering around," he cut in smoothly before you could protest. He gave your shoulder a light pat as he passed before pausing briefly near Varka. "Don't make her cry," he said flatly.
And just like that, Wriothesley walked off, leaving behind a silence that immediately felt too big.
You suddenly couldn't look at Varka properly anymore.
Your gaze dropped straight to your shoes instead, finding the cracks along the pavement infinitely easier to deal with than whatever expression he was wearing right now. Your fingers fumbled around with the tissue in your hand as shame curled painfully in your chest.
Suddenly the stinging pain on your face didn't matter anymore.
All you could think about was the fact that he heard you.
You weren't sure how much.
But it had clearly been enough.
"You really think staying away from me is better..?"
The softness in his voice made your chest ache.
You swallowed hard before forcing yourself to answer. "I—" Your voice faltered almost immediately, unsure of what to even say in this situation.
"I don't know anymore.." you sigh.
You hated that he was letting you speak.
Hated that he wasn't interrupting or brushing your feelings aside because that only made the guilt sitting in your chest feel heavier. It made you painfully aware of how unfair this probably sounded to him. How awful it must've felt hearing someone talk about leaving like you were something they needed to recover from.
You really were such a mess.
"The...rumours got worse. People started dragging my friends into it," you continued weakly. "And I know none of it was your fault, but every single thing somehow kept leading back to you. I mean, the whole drama started because they wanted me to stay away from you."
"So I thought if I just..distanced myself, things would calm down again." you finally looked up at him then, your expression strained and exhausted all at once. "You wouldn't have to keep cleaning up problems because of me either."
The words lingered heavily between the two of you.
Then he let out a small laugh.
Not the 'haha this is funny' laugh. No, it was more of a..tired one, if that was even possible.
"You know," he started softly, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked away briefly, "when you stopped replying, I thought maybe you were just busy because exams were coming up." A weak smile crossed his face. "You're a med student. I figured you were probably drowning in work."
Your chest tightened painfully.
"But hearing you say all this now..." his smile weakened slightly around the edges. "You were seriously planning on cutting me off completely, huh?"
The guilt that had already been crushing your chest just sank even deeper.
"I didn't want to make things harder for you," you said quietly, realising how pathetic the excuse sounded.
Varka stepped closer then, stopping just enough distance away to avoid overwhelming you. His expression had softened again, though there was still something undeniably hurt lingering underneath it.
"You deciding everything on your own without even talking to me first?" he murmured. "That hurts way more than some stupid online rumours."
Your breath caught slightly.
"I..." You looked away almost immediately again. "I didn't know how to face you."
"Do you know what the worst part was?" Varka asked.
"It wasn't the rumours nor the posts." He laughed softly again, though there still wasn't any humour behind it. "It was realising you were avoiding me because you thought being around me was ruining your life."
You froze as his words sunked in, and you feel yourself deflate even more, unable to defend yourself.
"I kept wondering if I did something wrong," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck again. "I thought maybe I scared you. Or maybe I was being too pushy and you got uncomfortable around me."
"But you were already planning how to leave before I even got the chance to stay."
The words hit so much harder than they should have.
Because none of that had ever crossed your mind.
You had been so consumed by your own guilt, your own panic, that you never really did stop to think about what this might have looked from his perspective.
"Why?" he asked softly, after a moment.
You looked up slightly, "Huh?"
"Why were you so determined to push me away?"
"Because you're nice." you admitted helplessly, frustration finally slipping properly into your voice now. "That's the problem"
Varka looked genuinely caught off guard by that answer.
"You kept helping me even after everything. I was rude—" your voice crackled slightly near the end despite your efforts to steady it, "but—" you swallowed, "you still look at me like I haven't done anything wrong. Even now!"
The silence afterward felt painfully raw.
"You make me feel worse about it," you confessed, voice quieter now. "Because I know if it were anyone else, they probably would've gotten sick of me already."
Something in Varka's expression seem to soften completely at your wrods. The hurt was still there, but now there was something else to—something..gentler. Sadder.
Slowly, he crouched properly in front of you, resting one arm loosely against his knee so you wouldn't have to keep tilting your head up to look at him.
Like he was making himself smaller on purpose.
"[Name]," he said gently, "do you know why I kept looking for you?"
"...to return my handkerchief?" you mumbled weakly.
A small laugh escaped him. "That too."
Then his expression softened again. "But mostly because I wanted to know you better."
Your eyes widened slightly, your head lifting to face him.
"The first time we met was a complete disaster," he admitted with a grin, "I got hit in the face by your bag before I could even explain myself properly."
You let out a horrified groan immediately, covering part of your face with your hand. "Please don't remind me.."
"But even then," he continued, "I could tell you weren't a bad person."
You slowly lowered your hand again.
"You got scared and reacted badly. That happens to everyone." he shrugged lightly. "But every time after that, especially with this whole situation, all I see now is someone trying way too hard to carry everything alone."
"And honestly?" Varka chuckled, "I think you care too much."
The words nearly undid you entirely.
Because he said it so simply.
Like it wasn't something wrong with you.
Like it wasn't something he wanted you to change.
Like caring too much wasn't something exhausting or burdensome or difficult to love.
You looked down again, feeling your face warm up as tears came and you blinked them away.
"I still caused trouble for you," you whispered.
You frowned slightly at how immediate his response was, finally looking back up at him again.
"The people who harassed you are the ones at fault," Varka said firmly this time. "Not you. Not because you talked to me." His brows furrowed slightly. "You don't get blamed for other people deciding to act horribly."
The conviction in his voice made something warm bloom in your chest.
Because part of you wanted so badly to believe him.
"I just.." you exhaled shakily, "I didn't know how to deal with any of it."
"I know." he said, "That's why you did what you did, right?"
There was no disappointment in his words.
"I know," Varka repeated more softly this time, his expression gentling even further. "That's why I wish you'd rely on me more someday."
Your eyes stung again, the warmth flooding back and you hurriedly rubbed at them before he could notice properly.
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
The wind passed quietly between the two of you, stirring the leaves nearby as the evening sun cast warm light across the pavement. Varka stayed there patiently, like he wasn't waiting for you to become easier to handle or less complicated or exhausting.
Like he was willing to stay anyway.
"Maybe," Varka started thoughtfully after a while, "everything went downhill because we got off on the wrong foot from the start."
Before you could process what he meant, Varka straightened before rummaging through his bag and pulling out his own handkerchief and holding it out to you to wipe your eyes. (of course he noticed.)
"Maybe we should restart properly." he said.
"I am Varka. President of the student council, currently majoring in sports sciene." He tilted his head slightly, blue eyes full of warmth despite everything the two of you had already been through. "It's nice to meet you."
And the first time in days—
The heaviness in your chest finally loosened.
