At the beginning of 1978, London’s Evening News ran a series of articles about lesbians becoming pregnant through AID (Artificial Insemination by Donor). The paper went to ludicrous lengths to get their ‘scoop’. They used journalists who ‘infiltrated’ lesbian organisations, they harassed lesbian mothers, photographing them with telephoto lenses, trying to create sensationalism and scandal around the issue. They quoted outraged members of the British Medical Association, and attempted to discredit a doctor who supplied AID. The articles, splashed across the front page and double-page spreads, caused a lot of heartache and stress to lesbians and their families. Graffiti, like the one above, appeared all over London, and on 6 January, after one of the articles was published, about 50 lesbians and gay men occupied the offices of what had become known as the Evening Spews!
