Library Murder Case
Chapters 96-98
Deaths: 1
Days: The kids reference Conan being off from school for three days. In the spirit of minimalism, I'm counting Cold Day 1 as the day of the Diplomat Case. Which makes the days passed over the course of chapter 96 to be 3.
Essential: This is an interesting case because it starts halfway through chapter 96. The conclusion to the Diplomat case and this case are part of the same chapter. And then at the end of this case, Shinichi drinks the Paikaru again and discovers it doesn't work. So it's really sort of... part of the Diplomat case? And therein, it's essential because that case is essential.
day 2: selfie!!
i actually took a selfie as ref for this lol // where i got the challenge prompt list

So, we're 51 chapters deep into my Conan reread, which is five volumes and about a year of publication. I thought this would be a great spot to pause for a minute.
Right now, this project has parsed through 14 cases. 12 are 100% essential, 1 is 100% non essential, and 1 is still up in the air (the "Once-A-Month Present Threat Case", otherwise known as the "Ran is suspicious of Shinichi for the first time" case).
Assuming that that up-in-the-air case isn't canonical, our current statistics are quite interesting:
A minimum of 34 days have passed over the course of the story.
Over that time, Conan has encountered 13 deaths.
Which works out to approximately one body every three days on average.
(If we include the case I'm uncertain about, those numbers become 65 days, 13 deaths, for an average of one body every five days.)
Out of those 14 cases, a whole five-- that's over a third!-- feature 0 deaths!
Finally, I want to end this year wrap up with some fun facts.
When Detective Conan began its run in January 1994, a lot of things didn't exist that exist now. In the spirit of the memorable case about the guy locked in a room writing novels with plots that could have been solved easily by a cell phone, a classic and memorable Conan case, let's talk about things introduced to the world over the past year of Conan cases that we've looked at.
In January 1994, Chapter One of Detective Conan is published. I didn't exist. Fruitopia didn't exist. Reese's Puffs didn't exist. By the end of the year, all three of these things did exist. The W-VHS system for Japanese Hi-Vision television (early analog HD) was introduced in 1994. In computers, the HP 200LX personal assistant was released that year. The Macintosh Quadra 630 (weighing in at 19lbs, with a whole 4MB of memory!) was the least expensive computer in the Mac lineup for $1,199 USD ($2,192 2022 USD equivalent!). If you wanted a mobile phone that released in 1994, you'd be looking at the sick Nokia 2010 or the Nokia 2110. Amazon was founded between the publication of the takoban volumes 1 and 2. This is the world that Conan Edogawa was "born" into.

So I have been following @conanmythbusting ‘s reread for a while and they brought up the fact that Conan’s classic outfit is actually his old school uniform, which really adds a whole new level of creepiness to this boy when you think about it. Anyways, keep up the wonderful work I have been enjoying the ride!
Case closed count: episode 534
There is truly no words for how cursed the characters in Detective Conan should logically feel.

SOOO. more dogs from that au x’d

Karaoke Box Murder Case
Chapters 45-48
Days: 1 over the course of the story itself, 7 minimum referenced to have happened since the previous case
Deaths: 1
Essential? Okay... so about that...
... you know Imma write an essay when I don't want to consider something essential. You know it's because I came into this project with the intent of being as generous as possible in the shortness of the timeline, and defiantly am hoping to write off any cases with a huge timeskip from the start.
So that aside...
Things that make me want to call this essential:
Sonoko's character is established, the fallout of using her as a detective is shown.
And
Shinichi solves a case as himself, via phone call, for the first time.
And this is heartbreaking, and I do think that the early Shinichi bullshit is sort of essential to her character? And Shinichi's "there for just a moment and then disappears" does need to be established in the essential timeline at some point. That said... I think the later scene that does a similar thing with Conan in the headlights in the alleyway does it much better? Do we need both scenes establishing the same thing in the bare essential canon?
because I don't buy this.
So you've heard my arguments for both including it or discluding it... right now I'm going to mark it as a "maybe", like the first Ran-suspicion case, and wait to see if this scene gets references in an essential case down the line.
With the absolute disdain this man is showing for my goal here-- I say, as if Chapter 48 of serialization Gosho Aoyama knew his series timeline would get so fucked up-- I have no doubt that this argument will all be moot and this scene will be referenced.
But until then, I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks about whether this case was necessary or not.
KUROBA KAITO HC #20:
Kaito has many scars
From bullets, knives, rubble, broken bones, explosions- you name it, he probably has it somewhere on his body
But there's one scar that marked his body long before he became KID and that's the burn mark on his back. It's big enough that it flares out like a pair of wings, as if they were seared right off his back
Or onto him
It's the scar that haunts him the most, received when he was nothing but a desperate, wailing child trying to drag his father's body out of the burning stage
And though he got out of the fire, the fire never left him ever since

I love when people are like “I can’t believe you reblogged that despite their user name, icon, bio, and last twenty posts” bc to me my dash is the only part of this website and I’m not slowing down to look at urls you could all be the same person
#spiritual successor is people being like why didnt you read my pinned before you reblogged!!!#dude i am not. i am not vetting every blog#i am here to backread for 45mins and rb 30 posts in a row and disappear#tumblr life
“Why didn’t you read X before reblogging?” bruh, tumblrs spagethi code fails half of the time I try to reblog anyway and gives me an error message instead. Aint no one have the time for this.
If I one day ever publish a printed version of Stay Dog it will definitly have Arsen in the church on the cover, which is ironic because I don't think Arsen will ever step into the church canonically.
