A fascinating audio book about coming out & religion
I forgot to cancel my Audible subscription after the free trial month, and since I ended up paying for another month, I figured I could just as well listen to a few books. I looked around the store quite randomly, and ended up paying a few dollars for a book by Krista Doyle called βDoes This Bible Belt Make Me Look Gay?: My Tales of Coming Out, Christianity, and Southern Cultureβ.
Iβm not religious, I consider myself atheist/agnostic, even though I am a member of the Lutheran church - mainly out of habit, and partially because my dad finds it somewhat important. Since some of my other relatives are very religious, I have spent quite a few moments thinking about how our church sees non-heterosexual relationships. I listen to all the statements the church has given regarding same-sex marriage, and even actively commented these things on facebook and in real life (even though Iβve yet to come out of the closet as bisexual).
This book was a brilliant view on what it feels like to come from a religious family, to be taught from a small child that there is black and white but nothing in between, and what struggles you may face realizing that you donβt fit the βnormβ. The writer is a lesbian who grew up in Louisiana and later moved to L.A., and finally figured herself out, came out of the closet, and embraced her true self. I highly recommend this book to anyone questionning themselves, or dealing with coming out. The story was well-written, funny and inspirational, and very relatable in many ways.
(Also, since many of my followers are shipping rhink, this might give some insight on some things regarding their lives and how they view themselves, too. Iβm not trying to imply anything about any real life things, but the story about a bible belt kid moving to L.A. does have a familiar ring to it.)
Hereβs a link to this book on Amazon, if youβre interested. The Audible version cost me under 3 dollars (or 1 credit):
