The Temporary
All gains end in loss, all elevations end in a fall, all union must end in separation, and life itself always end in death. The wise therefore do not become attached to wives, sons, friends or riches.
I shall therefore take joy in the execution of my duties, for this is the path to everlasting happiness
Ramayana
Sisya or disciple
Just as disciple has the same root as the word discipline, the word sisya, which is the sanskrit wordĀ for disciple, has the same root as sasane, ruler.Ā Sisya means, one who voluntarily accepts the rulership of the spiritual master.
Qualifications of a disciple
SB 11.10.6 ā The servant or disciple of the spiritual master should be free from false prestige, never considering himself to be the doer. He should be active and never lazy and should give up all sense of proprietorship over the objects of the senses, including his wife, children, home and society. He should be endowed with feelings of loving friendship toward the spiritual master and should never become deviated or bewildered. The servant or disciple should always desire advancement in spiritual understanding, should not envy anyone and should always avoid useless conversation. http://vedabase.com/en/sb/11/10/6
SB 1.2.10 ā Lifeās desires should never be directed toward sense gratification. One should desire only a healthy life, or self-preservation, since a human being is meant for inquiry about the Absolute Truth. Nothing else should be the goal of oneās works.

Characteristics of a saintly person
SB 11.11.29-32Ā āĀ The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Uddhava, a saintly person is merciful and never injures others. Even if others are aggressive he is tolerant and forgiving toward all living entities. His strength and meaning in life come from the truth itself, he is free from all envy and jealousy, and his mind is equal in material happiness and distress. Thus, he dedicates his time to work for the welfare of all others. His intelligence is never bewildered by material desires, and he has controlled his senses. His behavior is always pleasing, never harsh and always exemplary, and he is free from possessiveness. He never endeavors in ordinary, worldly activities, and he strictly controls his eating. He therefore always remains peaceful and steady. A saintly person is thoughtful and accepts Me as his only shelter. Such a person is very cautious in the execution of his duties and is never subject to superficial transformations, because he is steady and noble, even in a distressing situation. He has conquered over the six material qualities ā namely hunger, thirst, lamentation, illusion, old age and death. He is free from all desire for prestige and offers honor to others. He is expert in reviving the Kį¹į¹£į¹a consciousness of others and therefore never cheats anyone. Rather, he is a well-wishing friend to all, being most merciful. Such a saintly person must be considered the most learned of men. He perfectly understands that the ordinary religious duties prescribed by Me in various Vedic scriptures possess favorable qualities that purify the performer, and he knows that neglect of such duties constitutes a discrepancy in oneās life. Having taken complete shelter at My lotus feet, however, a saintly person ultimately renounces such ordinary religious duties and worships Me alone. He is thus considered to be the best among all living entities.
Health
According to Ayurveda, the oldest medical science, health is not merely a state of freedom from disease but a state of permanent physical, mental and spiritual happiness and fulfillment.
The Whale and the Frog
The whale, residing in the ocean, has both knowledge and realization of itsĀ greatness. The frog, living in a pond, has no idea about the existence of the ocean, what to speak of realization.Ā Relative toĀ their experience, the whale looks at the ocean with different eyes than the frog, as the frog tends to compare the vastness of the ocean to the size of the pond he's living in... "Is it two times the size of my pond, ten times the size, a thousand...?" In the same way, GodĀ is known to possess sixĀ opulences:
all riches
all strength
all fame
all beauty
all knowledge
all renunciation
We, living beings, parts and parcels of the Lord, also possess these six opulences but only to aĀ limited degree. We should not be foolish like the frog, trying to estimate the greatness of the Lord through our limited vision and experience
Safety and Security.
A devotee of the Lord never prays to the Lord to appear for the sake of the troubles the miscreants cause for him, and he never bothers Him by asking for protection. Rather,Ā the Lord is anxious to give protection to the devotees.
Ā Ā -- Ā Srimad Bhagavatam 3.14.42
The real, spiritual form of the living entity.
In the Bhakti-rasÄmį¹ta-sindhu it is said that a person whose only desire isĀ to render transcendental loving service to the LordĀ is a free person in any condition of material existence.Ā That service attitudeĀ is the svarÅ«pa, or real form, of the living entity.Ā Lord ÅrÄ« Caitanya MahÄprabhu, in the Caitanya-caritÄmį¹ta, also confirms this statement byĀ declaring that the real, spiritual form of the living entity is eternal servitorship to the Supreme Lord.

Freedom & security
One will sacrifice freedom to gain security,
another will sacrifice security to gain freedom,
but he that sacrifices both, will gain both.
Seeing the Form of the Lord
...When the Lord was present, persons who were able to satisfy their material hankerings by seeing Him in true perspective were thus able to go back with Him to His kingdom. But those persons who were unable to see the Lord as He is, remained attached to material hankerings and were not able to go back home, back to Godhead.
Ā -- Ā Srimad Bhagavatam 3.2.11 (Main vers + 3th alinea of the Purport)
Proper Use of Intelligence
Mind is the instrument for feeling different material experiences, but intelligence is deliberative and can change everything for the better.Ā The intelligent person, therefore, can attain salvation from the illusion of material existence by proper use of intelligence.Ā
An intelligent person can detect the awkward position of material existence and thus begin to inquire as to what he is, why he is subjected to different kinds of miseries, and how to get rid of all miseries, and thus, by good association, an advanced intelligent person can turn towards the better life of self-realization.
It is advised, therefore, that an intelligent person associate with the great sages and saints who are on the path of salvation. By such association, one can receive instructions which are able to slacken the conditioned soulās attachment for matter, and thus the intelligent man gradually gets rid of the illusion of matter and false ego and is promoted to the real life of eternity, knowledge and bliss.
Ā -- Ā SB 2.10.32 Purport
The Lord's Grace
The Lord Himself appears as the spiritual master to a person who is sincere in heart about serving the Lord.
Therefore the bona fide spiritual master, who happens to meet the sincere devotee, should be accepted as the most confidential and beloved representative of the Lord.
If a person is posted under the guidance of such a bona fide spiritual master, it may be accepted without any doubt that the desiring person has achieved the grace of the Lord.
Ā -- Ā Srimad bhagavatam 2.9.7 (Purport)
One's Own Glory
There is no profit in denying the supremacy of the Lord, who is the controller of all energies, but one should be constitutionally situated in oneās own glory, namely to be situated in the pure consciousness of being the eternal servitor of the Lord.
Ā -- Ā Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana) 2.9.3 (Purport)

The truth of religious principles is hidden within the heart of a liberated, self-realized person. For this reason, one should accept whatever path such great souls advocate.

Measures of success
