As a Goddess, Lakshmi is the wife of Vishnu, the God of the largest, most numerous, and the most 'standard' form of Hinduism. Vaisnavism is the one that correspondingly shapes the default perceptions and the various avatars of Lakshmi, of whom Sita is the most famous, are the symbolism of what traditional Hindu ideology says women should do and be like. One of the more important factors of Lakshmi and Vishnu, relative to other myths of divine marriage, is that the two have far more of a sense of fidelity and linkage to one another by comparison to other deities of other myths and other pantheons.
Both, for that matter, incarnate as avatars in specific cycles, to a point that almost every avatar of Vishnu has an avatar of Lakshmi with Him. As such Lakshmi's role is to shape the archetypes of the traditional expectations of Hindu women, in particular as Sita.......and the ways in which Hindu women have always differed from the ideal as in all other paths does not mean that the ideal does not exist.
